A Drink

The PC approaches Blackwall in the barn.

Blackwall: Want a drink? I’ve a hankering for company.

They enter the Herald’s Rest and sit.

Blackwall: When I was a boy, there were these urchins who roamed the streets near my father’s house. One day, they found a dog. A wretched little thing. It came to them for food. They caught it, tied a rope around its neck, and strung it up. Do you know what I did?

Dialogue options:

  • General: You saved it?[1]
  • General: That’s horrible! [2]
  • General: Of course not. [3]

1 - General: You saved it? PC: You stopped them, cut the dog down? [4]

2 - General: That’s horrible! PC: Not the fireside tale I was expecting, Blackwall! Blackwall: Just listen. [4]

3 - General: Of course not. PC: I wasn’t there. How should I know? [4]

4 - Scene continues

Blackwall: I did nothing. Not a damn thing. It was crying. I saw the kicking legs, the neck straining and twisting… And I turned around, went inside, and closed the door. I could have told my father or alerted someone. I didn’t. I just pretended it wasn’t happening.

Dialogue options:

  • General: You were a child. [5]
  • General: So did everyone else. [6]
  • General: You were weak. [7] +Blackwall approves

5 - General: You were a child. PC: You said you were just a boy. Blackwall: I was old enough to know the dog was suffering and that it was wrong. [7]

6 - General: So did everyone else. PC: You couldn’t have been the only one there. And no one else stepped in. Blackwall: Doesn’t make what I did any less wrong. [7]

7 - General: You were weak. PC: The coward’s way out. Blackwall: It was. I knew it then, and I know it now. [7]

8 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: I may as well have tied the noose myself. We could make the world better. It’s just easier to shut our eyes.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Don’t let that stop you. [9]
  • General: Your eyes aren’t shut. [10] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: All this over a dog? [11] -Blackwall slightly disapproves

9 - General: Don’t let that stop you. PC: Nothing worth doing is easy. Blackwall: (Chuckles.) Look at you. You would’ve done the right thing.

Blackwall (dwarf PC): Whatever you used to be, you aren’t anymore. You’re the Inquisitor, the Herald of Andraste. Blackwall (non-dwarf PC): We’re lucky there are people like you in this world. [12]

10 - General: Your eyes aren’t shut. PC: When we first met, you were saving peasants from demons and outlaws. You’re not a man who shuts his eyes. A little insane, maybe. Blackwall: Of course you’d make light of it. You make saving the world look easy. The rest of us can only dream of matching what you’ve done. Don’t you see? It’s not just about what happened back then. [12]

11 - General: All this over a dog? PC: So you’re upset about a dog that died decades ago? Blackwall: You going to tell me to get over it? “It’s the past, forget it!” You make saving the world look easy. The rest of us can only dream of matching what you’ve done. Don’t you see? It’s not just about what happened back then. [12]

12 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: There’s always some dog out there, some fucking mongrel that doesn’t know how to stay away.

Missing

The PC goes to the stables to find a note in place of Blackwall.

Inquisitor, ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤ You’ve been a friend and an inspiration. You’ve given me the wisdom to know right from wrong and, more importantly, the courage to uphold the former. ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤ It’s been my honor to serve you.

If romanced:

There is little I can say that will ease this pain. Just know that while it hurt to leave, it would’ve hurt more if I stayed. ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤ I am deeply sorry.

Messenger: The spymaster has confirmed it. Blackwall is gone.

Dialogue options:

  • General: He must have his reasons. [1]
  • General: Gone where? Leliana must know. [2]
  • General: Find him. [3]
  • Flirt: I knew something was wrong. [4]

1 - General: He must have his reasons. PC: He would not have left unless he had a good reason. Messenger: It is not for me to speculate on Blackwall’s motivations.

2 - General: Gone where? Leliana must know. PC: Go on… Leliana knows where he is, doesn’t she? She knows everything. Messenger: She doesn’t know everything. Yet.

3 - General: Find him. PC: Track him down. He’s needed here.

4 - Flirt: I knew something was wrong. PC: When we were together, he seemed troubled. I should’ve seen this coming. Messenger: Here, I have something that may help.

5 - Scene continues.

Messenger: Sister Leliana had us search the Warden’s quarters. Not much to find, except this. It was missing from last week’s reports. I don’t know what Blackwall’s interest in this particular matter is, but it could be a good place to start.

The messenger hands the PC a note and leaves.

Lieutenant Cyril Mornay, one of the soldiers responsible for the Callier Massacre of 9:37, was captured in Lydes. Like the others who were arrested for their involvement, Mornay insists that he did not know who he was assassinating, and that he was just following the orders of his captain. This captain, Thom Rainier, is still at large. Mornay is to be executed within the week in Val Royeaux.

The PC travels to Val Royeaux. They approach the gallows, where a man kneels before a crowd, and an Orlesian guard reads off a scroll.

Bailiff: Cyril Mornay. For your crimes agains the Empire of Orlais… For the murders of General Vincent Callier, Lady Lorette Callier, their four children, and their retainers… You are sentenced to be hanged from the neck until dead. Do you have anything to say in your defense?

Mornay remains silent, and the executioner prepares the noose.

Bailiff: Very well.

Party comments:

  • Varric: Well, this is grim.
  • Solas: Ah, human justice.
  • Dorian: Who’s this man to Blackwall? A brother? A friend?
  • Iron Bull: So we’re just waiting for Blackwall to turn up, right?
  • Cassandra: Does Blackwall want to recruit this man?
  • Vivienne: Look at all these people. I thought we were more civilized than this.
  • Sera: Poor bastard. So! Where’s food? Orlesians always stock these things. Vivienne: (Groans.)
  • Cole: They’re going to kill him! Dorian: Good grasp of the obvious, this one. Varric: Now now, Cole.

Bailiff: Proceed.

Blackwall: Stop!

Blackwall climbs the stairs of the platform.

Bailiff: A Grey Warden.

Blackwall: This man is innocent of the crimes laid before him. Orders were given, and he followed them like any good soldier. He should not die for that mistake!

Bailiff: Then find me the man who gave the order.

Blackwall pauses.

Varric (if present): Oh, shit.

PC: Blackwall!

Blackwall: No. I am not Blackwall. I never was Blackwall. Warden Blackwall is dead, and has been for years. I assumed his name to hide, like a coward, from who I really am.

Mornay: You, after all this time…

Blackwall: It’s over. I’m done hiding. I gave the order. The crime is mine. I am Thom Rainier.

There os murmering among the croud, and Blackwall is escorted away.

Thom Rainier

The PC approaches the bailiff.

Bailiff: Can you believe it? Thom Rainier himself. Bailiff: Something you want?

1 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: What do you know of Rainier? [2]
  • Investigate: Where’s this… Rainier? [3]
  • [Leave.] [4]

2 - Investigate: What do you know of Rainier? PC: You must know something about Rainier? Bailiff: I know what everyone knows: he’ll hang for the massacre of a noble and his family. [back to 1]

3 - Investigate: Where’s this… Rainier? PC: Where did they take the prisoner? Bailiff: In the jail off the marketplace. If you’ve goodbyes to say, say them now. It’s a damned mess, but believe you me, it’ll be sorted out quick. Lots of people can’t wait to see that man swing. [back to 1]

4 - [Leave.] Bailiff: Guess not.

As the PC leaves: Bailiff: Goodbye, then.

The PC enters the jail and approaches Blackwall’s cell. Blackwall kneels dejectedly on the floor.

Blackwall: I didn’t take Blackwall’s life. I traded his death. He wanted me for the Wardens, but there was an ambush. Darkspawn. He was killed. I took his name to stop the world from losing a good man. But a good man, the man he was, wouldn’t have let another die in his place.

The PC walks up to the bars.

Dialogue options:

  • Sad: You lied to me. [5]
  • Pleased: What you did was brave. [6]
  • Confused: You really killed those people? [7]
  • Angry: And dying makes up for it? [8]

5 - Sad: You lied to me. PC: I called you a friend. I trusted you. You lied. Blackwall: You thought I was Blackwall. I didn’t want to tell you otherwise. As Blackwall, I was something. I had a purpose. I could make amends. [9]

6 - Pleased: What you did was brave. PC: You saved that man. That took courage. Blackwall: Courage? I killed innocent people… destroyed Mornay’s life and the lives of others like him. One moment of courage will not make up for that. [9]

7 - Confused: You really killed those people? PC: Was the bailiff telling the truth? Did you really do those things? Blackwall: Yes, I did. It’s all true. It’s time we all took a good look at who I really am. [9]

8 - Angry: And dying makes up for it? PC: You think your death will make up for what you did? Blackwall: Isn’t it a start? [9]

9 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: Why are you here?

Dialogue options:

  • General: I want to help.
PC: I needed you to know you aren’t alone in this. ㅤㅤ ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤ General: That’s up to you. PC: That depends on what you say. ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤ
  • General: I want an explanation. PC: You’re going to explain yourself.

Blackwall stands and grabs the bars, rattling them.

Blackwall: Don’t you understand? I gave the orders to kill Lord Callier, his entourage, and I lied to my men about what they were doing! When it came to light, I ran. Those men, my men, paid for my treason while I was pretending to be a better man!

The PC backs away.

Blackwall: This is what I am! A murderer, a traitor… a monster.

Blackwall sinks to the ground.

Dialogue options:

  • General: You’re more than that. PC: I know you’re more than what you say. Have some faith in yourself. ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤ
  • General: I’m not convinced. PC: Would a monster have given himself up? Somewhere along the line you stopped pretending. ㅤㅤ ㅤ ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤ
  • General: You’re pathetic. PC: Monster? You flatter yourself. Look at you. You’re nothing. +Blackwall slightly approves

Further Questions

The PC speaks to Blackwall.

Blackwall: Yes? Blackwall (if spoken to again): I didn’t think we had anything more to talk about.

1 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: Who was the real Blackwall? [2]
  • Investigate: Who’s Thom Rainier? [3]
  • Investigate: Who’s Mornay? [4]
  • Investigate: Your crime. [5]
  • General: I have to go. [6]

1 - Investigate: Who was the real Blackwall? PC: I need to know about Blackwall. The real Blackwall.

Blackwall: We met in a tavern when I was on the run. I was nothing, a waste of life, but he wanted to recruit me. We headed to Val Chevin for the Joining, but Blackwall insisted on making a stop along the way. An old ruin from one of the previous Blights. He said it led to the Deep Roads. I was to go down alone, find a darkspawn, and fill a vial with its blood. When I returned, I found the Warden ambushed by more of the creatures. He took a blow for me. He shouldn’t have died. It should’ve been me.

Dialogue options:

  • Special (romanced): You took me there. [7]
  • General: He sounds like a hero. [8]
  • General: Maybe, but he didn’t think so. [9]
  • General: His death was your fault. [10]

7 - Special: You took me there. PC: We went there, where you were ambushed. We retrieved your badge. It was never really yours, was it? Blackwall: No. It belonged to him. I was going to tell you the truth… when we went there. I wanted to explain why I couldn’t be with you. But you found Blackwall’s badge, and I… I lost my nerve. You wanted me to be him. I wanted to be him. To even imagine that I could replace that man… [11] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 8 - General: He sounds like a hero. PC: It was a heroic act, stepping between you and a darkspawn. Blackwall: I wasn’t worthy. [11] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 9 - General: Maybe, but he didn’t think so. PC: Not saying I disagree, but Blackwall clearly thought you were worth saving. Blackwall: No one should have died for me. [11] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 10 - General: His death was your fault. PC: He sacrificed himself for you. You’re to blame. Blackwall: Don’t you think I know that? [11] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 11 - Scene continues. ㅤㅤ ㅤ Blackwall: He… he would’ve wanted me to carry on to Val Chevin, I’m certain. But without Blackwall, there was no proof that I’d been recruited, that I didn’t kill him. I couldn’t go to the Wardens, but I couldn’t just walk away. So Rainier died, and Blackwall lived. [back to 1]

2 - Investigate: Who’s Thom Rainier? PC: Who were you before this mess? Blackwall: I was a captain in the Orlesian army. Well-regarded, respected, but it wasn’t enough. One mistake. One mistake, and everything I worked for fell apart. [back to 1]

3 - Investigate: Who’s Mornay? PC: The man on the gallows: Mornay. Who was he? Blackwall: My second-in-command. He was a good man. When I heard he’d been caught, I was resolved to stop his execution. Couldn’t let another die for my mistake. [back to 1]

4 - Investigate: Your crime. PC: I need to know the details of what you did, who you killed, why.

Blackwall (if asked before): We’ve already been through this. Vincent Callier. And for gold. [12]

Blackwall: I betrayed the empire and assassinated a general. All for gold. The man was General Vincent Callier. My employer was a chevalier, Robert Chapuis. Ser Robert believed that Grand Duke Gaspard was the rightful ruler of Orlais and would eventually take the throne. He thought that by eliminating one of Celene’s loyal supporters, he might endear himself to the true emperor. I can’t say if Robert’s plan would’ve worked. I didn’t care. There was good coin offered, and I took it. By the time Ser Robert’s involvement was uncovered, I was long gone. Of course, the grand duke disavowed any knowledge of the act, and publicly condemned it. Robert killed himself. Poison in his wine. Another victim of the Great Game.

12 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: What did you tell your men? [13]
  • Investigate: You murdered Callier’s family? [14]
  • Investigate: I want to know something else. [15]

13 - Investigate: What did you tell your men? PC: You got your men to help you. What did you tell them? Blackwall: They didn’t know who they were attacking. I told them it was an important mission. They trusted me without question. Just as your men trust you. ㅤㅤ ㅤ Dialogue options:

  • General: Our cause is just. [16]
  • General: Armies need commanders. [17]
  • General: I’m not a traitor. [18]

16 - General: Our cause is just. PC: Our men follow me because they believe our cause is righteous. Blackwall: They believe it because that’s what you tell them. [back to 12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 17 - General: Armies need commanders. PC: Armies are weapons. Weapons don’t wield themselves. Blackwall: Weapons don’t have lives, families, dreams. An army is not just a weapon. [back to 12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 18 - General: I’m not a traitor. PC: I’m not forcing my men to commit crimes. Blackwall:  (Chuckles.) I cannot argue with that. [back to 12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 14 - Investigate: You murdered Callier’s family? PC: My reports say that Callier was with his family. You had them all slaughtered? ㅤㅤ ㅤ Blackwall: I didn’t know Callier would be traveling with his family. I assumed only soldiers, armed guards. My men had been told to eliminate everyone. They’d seen war. They thought they were defending their country. No one likes to think about that, but it’s names that carry power in this world. Bloodlines. Heirs. No matter how leaders like Celene or Gaspard pretend the Game is played, that’s how real war is waged. ㅤㅤ ㅤ Dialogue options:

  • General: It shouldn’t be that way. [19]
  • General: You weren’t at war. [20]
  • General: Only by cowards. [21]

19 - General: It shouldn’t be that way. PC: That shouldn’t be how wars are fought. There’s no need. Thom: War is unfair, and the sky is blue. But you’re right. There was no need for what I did. [back to 12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 20 - General: You weren’t at war. PC: But you weren’t at war. Not really. Thom: I’ve been on enough battlefields to know the same crime at the right time would’ve earned a medal. But that’s what I did and why I deserve to be here. [back to 12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 21 - General: Only by cowards. PC: Only cowards strike the defenceless. Thom: I’ve been on enough battlefields to know the same crime at the right time would’ve earned a medal. But that’s what I did and why I deserve to be here. [back to 12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 15 - Investigate: I want to know something else. PC: There’s another thing I’m still wondering. Thom: Yes? [back to 1]

5 - General: I have to go. PC: That’s all for now.

Decisions

Cullen stops the PC as they head out.

Cullen: I have Leliana’s report on Thom Rainier.

He hands over the report.

1 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: Summarize it. [2]
  • General: Thank you. [3]
  • General: She had this report all along. [4]
  • General: She failed me. [5]

2 - Investigate: Summarize it. PC: Give me the overview. Cullen: Looks like our friend was once a respected captain in the Imperial Orlesian army. Before the civil war, he was turned, persuaded to assassinate one of Celene’s biggest supporters. He led a group of fiercely loyal men on this mission, and told them nothing of it. His men took the fall for him. A few lucky ones, like Mornay, managed to escape. Cullen (if PC romanced Blackwall): I’m sorry. I know what he meant to you. [back to 1]

3 - General: Thank you. PC: This is helpful. Or at least educational. Cullen: Don’t blame yourself. We all made this mistake.

4 - General: She had this report all along. PC: Let me guess. Our spymaster had this lying around somewhere, didn’t she? Cullen: It would have been difficult for anyone to connect Blackwall to Rainier.

5 - General: She failed me. PC: She’s my spymaster. She should’ve foreseen this! Cullen: How? With this Grey Warden mess, there was no one to say he wasn’t Blackwall. Sometimes we don’t questions those we want to trust.

6 - Scene contines.

Cullen (Leliana travelled with HoF and did not die in Orgins): Even Leliana has something of a blind spot when it comes to Wardens.

Cullen: We all made this mistake.

Cullen: (Sighs.) What do we do now? Black… Rainier has accepted his fate, but you don’t have to. We have resources. If he’s released to us, you may pass judgment on him yourself.

7 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: What would you do? [8]
  • General: I can’t decide yet. [9]
  • General: Get him out. [10]
  • General: Leave him. [11]

8 - What would you do? PC: If it were up to you, what would happen?

Cullen: What he did to the men under his command was unacceptable. He betrayed their trust, betrayed ours. I despise him for it. And yet he fought as a Warden. Joined the Inquisition. Gave his blood for our cause. And the moment he shakes off his past, he turns around and owns up to it. Why?

Dialogue options:

  • Special (romancing Blackwall): For me. [12]
  • General: People change. [13]
  • General: You’re impressed. [14]
  • General: It doesn’t matter. [15]

12 - Special: For me. PC: He did it for me. Cullen: Then only you can decide if he succeeded. [back to 7]

13 - General: People change. PC: He wanted to change. To prove he’d really left his past behind, he had to face up to it. Cullen: Saving Mornay the way he did took courage. I’ll give him that. But I can’t tell you what to do. [back to 7]

14 - General: You’re impressed. PC: Some part of you is impressed by what he did, isn’t it? Cullen: Saving Mornay the way he did took courage. I’ll give him that. But I can’t tell you what to do. [back to 7]

15 - General: It doesn’t matter. PC: I don’t care about his reasons. He lied to us. Cullen: Saving Mornay the way he did took courage. I’ll give him that. But I can’t tell you what to do. [back to 7]

9 - General: I can’t decide yet. PC: I need to think about it. Cullen: Do what you must, but come to a decision soon. This will not wait forever. [16]

10 - General: Get him out. PC: Have Rainier released to us. Cullen: We must move quickly. We can explore our options back at Skyhold. [16]

11 - General: Leave him. PC: Let him rot. [16]

16 - Scene ends.

Sit in Judgement: Captain Thom Rainier

The PC sits in the throne at the head of Skyhold’s main hall. and Josephine introduces the judgement.

Josephine: For judgment this day, Inquisitor, I must present Captain Thom Rainier, formerly known to us as Warden Blackwall. His crimes… well, you are aware of his crimes.

Josephine (Blackwall released via “alternative” method): The decision of what to do with him is yours. Josephine (Blackwall released via conventional method): It was no small expense to bring him here, but the decision of what to do with him is now yours.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I hate to see you like this. [1]
  • General: No gratitude? [2]
  • General: Your life is mine now. [3]

1 - General: I hate to see you like this. PC: I didn’t think this would be easy, but it’s harder than I thought. Blackwall: Another thing to regret. [4]

2 - General: No gratitude? PC: Not even a word of thanks, I see. Blackwall: I don’t know if I can thank you. [4]

3 - General: Your life is mine now. PC: Don’t think I’ve saved you. Your life belongs to me. Blackwall: Whatever you paid, it wasn’t worth it. [4]

4 - Scene continues.

Blackwall (freed via underworld): Using your ties to the underworld to free me? You’re a criminal, same as me. The world will learn how you’ve used your influence. They’ll know the Inquisition is corrupt.

Blackwall (freed via Leliana): I know you put another man in my place. Haven’t enough died for me?

Blackwall (freed via Cullen): Your soldiers took control of the prison. Some of the guards were killed. Men just doing their jobs! A waste of life.

Blackwall (freed via Josephine): What did you have to do to release me? PC: Josephine called in a few favors. There are enough people out there who owe the Inquisition. Blackwall: And what happens to the reputation the ambassador has so carefully cultivated? The world will learn how you’ve used your influence. They’ll know the Inquisition is corrupt.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I had no choice. [5]
  • General (freed via Cullen/Leliana): You’re judging me? [6]
  • General (freed via Underworld/Josephine): This will be forgotten. [7]
  • General: Your opinions don’t matter. [8]

5 - General: I had no choice. PC: I wish there’d been another way, but my options were limited. Blackwall: You could’ve left me there! [9]

6 - General: This will be forgotten. PC: Once the world is back to normal, no one will even remember this. Blackwall: I’ll remember. [9]

7 - General: You’re judging me? PC: I really think you’ve lost the right to judge anyone. Blackwall: There’s enough evil in the world because of me. [9]

8 - General: Your opinions don’t matter. PC: Your opinions will no longer be considered. You’ve lost that privilege. I decide what becomes of you now. [9]

9 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: I accepted my punishment. I was ready for all this to end. Why would you stop it? What becomes of me now?

Dialogue options:

  • You’re free, if you atone. (Free him to make amends for his crimes.) [10] +Sera approves +Blackwall greatly approves
  • The Wardens will decide. (Give Rainier to the Wardens, once this is over.) [11] +Sera slightly approves +Blackwall approves
  • I own you. Your lie continues. (Keep him in your servitude.) [12] -Sera disapproves -Blackwall greatly disapproves

10 - You’re free, if you atone. PC: You have your freedom. Blackwall: It cannot be as simple as that. PC: It isn’t. You’re free to atone as the man you are, not the traitor you thought you were or the Warden you pretended to be. Blackwall: The man I am? I barely know him. But he—I have a lot to make up for. If my future is mine, then I pledge it to the Inquisition. My sword is yours. If I’d said anything less, would an arrow from the rookery have snuffed me like a candle? PC: Take your post, Thom Rainier. Scene ends.

11 - The Wardens will decide. PC: Blackwall intended you join the Wardens. I will let them decide your fate. But only when Corypheus is dead. For now, Thom Rainier, the Inquisition needs you.

Blackwall: As you command.

Dialogue options:

  • General: This is a chance to atone. [13]
  • General: Becoming a Warden isn’t mercy. [14]
  • General: If you die, good riddance. [15]

13 - General: This is a chance to atone. PC: Blackwall gave you the chance to atone through action, not merely punishment. I find I can do no less. Blackwall: I’m grateful for this, Inquisitor, and I will serve for as long as I can. Scene ends. ㅤㅤ ㅤ 14 - General: Becoming a Warden isn’t mercy. PC: I’m told not all survive the Joining, and the life of a true Warden is difficult. Blackwall: If I die, it will be no less than I deserve. And if I live… I’ll make it count. I’m grateful for this, Inquisitor, and I will serve for as long as I can. Scene ends. ㅤㅤ ㅤ 15 - General: If you die, good riddance. PC: If you die serving here, so be it. Either way, you won’t be my problem for long. Blackwall: So I’m to be an unthinking tool in your fight. How… fitting that it should end this way. [19]

12 - I own you. Your lie continues. PC: You are in the Inquisition’s debt, and you will be what the Inquisition requires. We benefit from the appearance of having a Warden on our side, and so you will remain Blackwall. You will say nothing of Rainier, and neither will we.

Blackwall: So I’m to live the lie… until you release me from it.

Dialogue options:

  • General: It’s not so bad. [16]
  • General: Don’t blame me. [17]
  • General: I won’t. [18]

16 - General: It’s not so bad. PC: Being a Grey Warden has its benefits. You’ve already been enjoying them. Blackwall: Of course. [19] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 17 - General: Don’t blame me. PC: It’s not my lie. It’s yours. Blackwall: Of course. [19] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 18 - General: I won’t. PC: That won’t happen. Blackwall: Very well. [19]

19 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: I have my orders. With your leave, Inquisitor?

Post-Revelations

If Blackwall was imprisoned by the Inquisition:

Blackwall: “Warden Blackwall” at your service.

Dialogue options:

  • Special: You brought this on yourself.

PC: Why so bitter? You made your bed.

Blackwall: Oh, I’m aware of that, but do feel free to rub it in my face whenever possible. I’d hate to deprive you of that particular pleasure.

1 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: What do I call you now? [2]
  • Investigate: I want to know the truth about you. [3]
  • Investigate: Let’s talk about Wardens. [4]

1 - Investigate: What do I call you now? How shall I refer to you? Rainier or Blackwall?

Blackwall: I’ve gotten used to “Blackwall.” Perhaps we could treat it as less of a name and more of a title. Almost like “Inquisitor.” Reminds me of what I ought to be.

Dialogue options:

  • General: A noble sentiment. [5] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: They aren’t the same thing. [6] -Blackwall slightly disapproves
  • General: Your choice. [7]

5 - General: A noble sentiment. PC: Everyone needs something to aspire to. Blackwall: Exactly. I’m glad you understand. [back to 1]

6 - General: They aren’t the same thing. PC: “Inquisitor” means something. “Blackwall” doesn’t. Blackwall: It means something to me. [back to 1]

7 - General: Your choice. PC: I’d hate to deprive you of that particular pleasure. Blackwall: Thank you. [back to 1]

2 - Investigate: I want to know the truth about you. PC: Let’s talk about you. The truth, this time.

Blackwall: I suppose I owe you that. (Low approval): If we must.

8 - Dialogue options:

Investigate: You’re Orlesian? [9] Investigate: You were a soldier? [10] Investigate: You were in hiding? [11] Investigate: What about family? [12] General: Enough for now. [13]

9 - Investigate: You’re Orlesian? PC: So you’re actually Orlesian? Blackwall: Didn’t I say that I was from Markham in the Free Marches? I didn’t lie about that. I spent my childhood there. And then Orlais called to me. Markham seemed lifeless, colorless in comparison. [back to 8] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 10 - Investigate: You were a soldier? PC: Tell me about your time as a soldier. Blackwall: I served in the Imperial army. I distinguished myself there. Earned respect, the loyalty of my men. And then I threw it all away, betrayed my own side for gold. Only gold. [back to 8] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 11 - Investigate: You were in hiding? PC: You were on the run from the authorities, weren’t you? Blackwall: Yes. I made my living as a hired sword. Spent most of my coin on drink. ㅤㅤ ㅤ Blackwall (male PC): The occasional whore. Blackwall (female PC): I never stayed in one place for long. ㅤㅤ ㅤ Blackwall: Had to keep moving. I got to see much of Orlais that way. I saw what men like me had done to this great empire. It was a shock, seeing it up close, hearing the stories… It’s one thing to hear the news from afar, another to actually be there. [back to 8] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 12 - Investigate: What about family? PC: Did you have a family? A wife? Children? ㅤㅤ ㅤ Blackwall (female PC): No. I’ve never been suited to that kind of life. Maybe I don’t deserve it. (romanced): And I’d never found someone I wanted to stay with. [back to 8] ㅤㅤ ㅤ Blackwall (male PC): Children? None that I know about. If they exist, it’s best they stay away. No one deserves a father like this. [back to 8] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 13 - General: Enough for now. PC: We’ll continue this another time. [back to 1]

3 - Investigate: Let’s talk about Wardens.

PC: Is there anything you actually know about the Wardens? Or did you make it all up?

Blackwall (low approval): I knew enough to fool you, didn’t I? Blackwall (neutral/high approval): I made very little up. I also feared you knew enough to contradict me. Warden Blackwall told me a bit before my initiation. But it is a secretive Order. Not even the most senior Wardens know all there is to know.

14 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: You never heard the Calling. [15]
  • Investigate: Why were you recruited? [16]
  • General: Enough for now. [17]

15 - Investigate: You never heard the Calling. PC: Now we know why you were never worried about Corypheus’s Calling. Blackwall: Yes. I have none of the Wardens’ abilities, and none of the… drawbacks. Still, I would’ve fought through the darkest pits of the Deep Roads, like any true Warden. There’s more to it than being able to sense darkspawn. Warden Blackwall would’ve agreed.

Dialogue options:

  • Special (Blackwall was present at Adamant): You helped Adamant’s Wardens. [18]
  • General: You idolize them. [19]
  • General: Would he have agreed? [20] -Blackwall slightly disapproves
  • General: A foolish fantasy. [21] -Blackwall disapproves

18 - Special: You helped Adamant’s Wardens. PC: The Wardens at Adamant listened to you. They saw you as one of their own. Blackwall: Perhaps it takes an outsider to show how much of yourself you’ve lost. I never understood the reality of being a Warden. I only saw the ideal. I suppose I reminded them of something they’d forgotten. [back to 14] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 19 - General: You idolize them. PC: You have a lot of respect for the Wardens. Blackwall: They take all men, from the most noble to the most despicable, and make them equals. I needed to believe something like that was possible. [back to 14] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 20 - General: Would he have agreed? PC: You don’t know what Warden Blackwall would’ve believed. Blackwall: Neither do you. But I know he was a good man. [back to 14] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 21 - General: A foolish fantasy. PC: You imagine the Wardens are more than they are. Says more about you than the Wardens. Have I misunderstood what the Wardens do? They take all men, from the most noble to the most despicable, and make them equals. I needed to believe something like that was possible. [back to 14]

16 - Investigate: Why were you recruited? PC: Why did Blackwall want to recruit you? Blackwall: He never told me. I don’t know what he saw that day, besides some wreck starting a bar fight. That night, I taught some village militia a painful lesson about harassing the tavern girl. Didn’t know I had an audience.

Dialogue options:

  • General: A noble act. [22] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: Were you drunk? [23] +Blackwall approves
  • General: He saw how you fight. [24] +Blackwall slightly approves

22 - General: A noble act. PC: I can see why the Warden was impressed. Blackwall: You’re assuming my intentions were noble. (Laughs.) Told the girl to keep the wine coming. She couldn’t. Not with those louts bothering her. Something had to be done. [back to 14] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 23 - General: Were you drunk? PC: Did you start a fight while drunk? Blackwall: Maker, no. I wasn’t drunk, but I was trying to get there. Told the girl to keep the wine coming. She couldn’t. Not with those louts bothering her. Something had to be done. [back to 14] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 24 - General: He saw how you fight. PC: It’s obvious he recruited you for your skill in battle. Blackwall: Was probably just curious how some filthy vagrant could cut down so many militiamen. I didn’t ask, and I suppose we’ll never know. [back to 14]

17 - General: Enough for now. PC: We’ll continue this another time. [back to 1]
