The Bull’s Chargers

The PC exits the Chantry and is stopped by a messenger.

Krem: Excuse me, I’ve got a message for the Inquisition. But I’m having a hard time getting anyone to talk to me.
Krem (interacting a second time if you walk away): I’ve got a message, when you have the time.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Identify yourself. [1]
  • General: Give me the message. [2]

1 - General: Identify yourself.
PC: Who are you, soldier?
Krem: Cremisius Aclassi, with the Bull’s Chargers. Mercenary company.  We work mostly out of Orlais and Nevarra. [3]

2 - General: Give me the message.
PC: What’s the message? [3]

3 - Scene continues.

Krem: We got word of some Tevinter mercenaries gathering out on the Storm Coast. My company commander, Iron Bull, offers the information free of charge. If you’d like to see what the Bull’s Chargers can do for the Inquisition, meet us there and watch us work.

4 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: Tell me about your company. [5]
  • Investigate: Tell me about your leader. [6]
  • Investigate: Why give us this message? [7]
  • General: We’ll think about it. [8]
  • General: We welcome the help. [9]

5 - Investigate: Tell me about your company.
PC: What can your Bull’s Chargers offer the Inquisition?
Krem: We’re loyal, we’re tough, and we don’t break contracts. Ask Around Val Royeaux. We’ve got references. This war between Celene and Gaspard has left most companies weak. But not us.
[Back to 4]

6 - Investigate: Tell me about your leader.
PC: What should I know about your leader?
Krem (Qunari PC): Iron Bull? He’s a Qunari, like you.  He’s big, he’s got the horns, all of it.
Krem (non-Qunari PC): Iron Bull? He’s one of those Qunari. The big guys with the horns?
Krem: He leads us from the front, he pays well, and he’s a lot smarter than the last bastard I worked for. Best of all, he’s professional. We accept contracts with whoever makes the first real offer. You’re the first time he’s gone out of his way to pick a side.
[Back to 4]

7 - Investigate: Why give us this message?
PC: Why did your commander send us this information?
Krem: Iron Bull wants to work for the Inquisition. He thinks you’re doing good work.
[Back to 4]

8 - General: We’ll think about it.
PC: We’ll consider your offer.
Krem: I appreciate it. [10]

9 - General: We welcome the help.
PC: I look forward to meeting this Iron Bull.
Krem: We’re the best you’ll find. Come to the Storm Coast and you can see us in action. [10]

10 - Scene continues.

Krem: Later, then.

The PC travels out to the Storm Coast where they join the Chargers in combat on the beach. After the enemies are defeated, Iron Bull approaches Krem.

Iron Bull: Chargers, stand down! Krem! How’d we do?

Krem: Five or six wounded, chief. No dead.

Iron Bull: That’s what I like to hear. Let the throatcutters finish up, then break out the casks.

Iron Bull (Qunari PC): Hot damn, it’s true! (Laughs.) Oh, the Chantry must love you. A Qunari mercenary is the Herald of Andraste. Who’d’a thought?

Iron Bull (non-Qunari PC): So you’re with the Inquisition, huh? Glad you could make it. Come on, have a seat. Drinks are coming.

Dialogue options:

  • General (Qunari PC): I greet you, fellow Qunari. [11]
  • General (Qunari PC): You’re doing well enough. [12]
  • General (non-Qunari PC): You must be Iron Bull. [13]
  • General (non-Qunari PC): This is an odd location. [14]
  • General: That was impressive. [15]

11 - General: I greet you, fellow Qunari.
PC: Shenedan, Sten.
Iron Bull: Yeah, let’s try to keep that to a minimum. Makes the boys twitchy. [16]

24 - General: You’re doing well enough.
PC: I see I’m not the only one doing well for myself.
Iron Bull: I get by. [16]

13 - General: You must be Iron Bull.
PC: Iron Bull, I presume.
Iron Bull: Yeah, the horns usually give it away. [16]

14 - General: This is an odd location.
PC: You want to have drinks in the aftermath of a battle?
Iron Bull: Better than in the middle of a battle. This is Golden Scythe 4:90 Black. You spill it, you’ll kill all the grass. [16]

15 - General: This was impressive.
PC: Nicely done. I hear you’re looking for work?
Iron Bull: I am! Not before my drink, though. [16]

16 - Scene continues.

The PC and Bull walk down the beach a bit and are joined by Krem.

Iron Bull: I assume you remember Cremisius Aclassi, my lieutenant.

Krem: Good to see you again. Throatcutters are done, chief.

Iron Bull: Already? Have ‘em check again. I don’t want any of those Tevinter bastards getting away. No offense, Krem.

Krem: None taken. Least a bastard knows who his mother was. Puts him one up on you Qunari, right?

Krem leaves.

Iron Bull: So… you’ve seen us fight. We’re expensive, but we’re worth it… and I’m sure the Inquisition can afford us.

17 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: How expensive are you? [18]
  • General: I’m not sure we need you. [19]
  • General: You definitely seem useful. [20]

18 - Investigate: How expensive are you?
PC: How much is this going to cost me, exactly?
Iron Bull: It wouldn’t cost you anything personally, unless you wanna buy drinks later. Your ambassador—what’s her name—Josephine? We’d go through her and get the payments set up. The gold will take care of itself. Don’t worry about that. All that matters is we’re worth it.
[Back to 17]

19 - General: I’m not sure we need you.
PC: The Inquisition needs magical power to close the Breach. It doesn’t need mercenaries.
Iron Bull: Hey, everyone needs mercenaries. But if I need to sweeten the deal… [21]

20 - General: You definitely seem useful.
PC: The Chargers seem like an excellent company.
Iron Bull: They are. But you’re not just getting the boys. You’re getting me. [21]

21 - Scene continues.

Iron Bull: You need a frontline bodyguard, I’m your man. Whatever it is—demons, dragons? The bigger the better. And there’s one other thing. Might be useful, might piss you off. Ever hear of the Ben-Hassrath?

Dialogue options:

  • Special (Qunari PC): My parents taught me of them. [22]
  • General: Only a little. [23]
  • General: No. [24]

22 - Special: My parents taught me of them.
PC: I learned of the Ben-Hassrath from my parents. They are the enforcers of the Qunari, and the spies.
Iron Bull: Yeah, that’s them. Or, well, us. [25]

23 - General: Only a little.
PC: They’re a Qunari organization, right? The equivalent of their guards and city watch?
Iron Bull: I’d go closer to “spies,” but yeah, that’s them. Or, well, us. [25]

24 - General: No.
PC: I’ve never heard of it.
Iron Bull: It’s a Qunari order. They handle information, loyalty, security, all of it. Spies, basically. Or, well, we’re spies. [25]

25 - Scene continues.

Iron Bull: The Ben-Hassrath are concerned about the Breach. Magic out of control like that could cause trouble everywhere. I’ve been ordered to join the Inquisition, get close to the people in charge, and send reports on what’s happening. But I also get reports from Ben-Hassrath agents all over Orlais. You sign me on, I’ll share them with your people.

26 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: Why would you admit this? [27]
  • Investigate: What would you report back? [28]
  • Investigate: What can you tell us? [29]
  • (Qunari PC) Get away from me, spy! [30]
  • We don’t want you. (The Bull’s Chargers do not join the Inquisition. Iron Bull is not available as a party member.) [31]
  • You’re hired. (The Bull’s Chargers join the Inquisition, and Iron Bull Joins your party.) [32]
  • Don’t make me regret this. (The Bull’s Chargers join the Inquisition, and Iron Bull Joins your party.) [33]

27 - Investigate: Why would you admit this?
PC: You’re a Qunari spy, and you just… told me?
Iron Bull: Whatever happened at that Conclave thing, it’s bad. Someone needs to get that Breach closed. So whatever I am, I’m on your side.
PC: You still could have hidden what you are.
Iron Bull: From something called the Inquisition? I’d’ve been tipped sooner or later. Better you hear it right up front from me.
[Back to 26]

28 - Investigate: What would you report back?
PC: What would you send home in these reports of yours?
Iron Bull: Enough to keep my superiors happy. Nothing that’ll compromise your operations. The Qunari want to know if they need to launch an invasion to stop the whole damn world from falling apart. You let me send word of what you’re doing, it’ll put some minds at ease. That’s good for everyone.
[Back to 26]

29 - Investigate: What can you tell us?
PC: What’s in these Ben-Hassrath reports you’re offering to share?
Iron Bull: Enemy movements, suspicious activity, intriguing gossip. It’s a bit of everything. Alone, they’re not much. But if your spymaster is worth a damn, she’ll put ‘em to good use.
PC: She?
Iron Bull: I did a little research. Plus, I’ve always had a weakness for redheads.
[Back to 26]

30 - Get away from me, spy!
PC: Stay back! You expect me, a Tal-Vashoth, to trust a Qunari spy?
Iron Bull: Well… yeah. Or tell me to leave. Either way’s fine. You wanna talk Tal-Vashoth, we can do that in detail some other time. But the short version? If you’re not a bandit who’s terrorizing innocent people, I’ve got no problem with you.
[Back to 26]

31 - We don’t want you.
PC: The Inquisition won’t be using your services.
Iron Bull: Not a problem. We’ll be out of your way, then. Best of luck.
Scene ends.

32 - You’re hired.
PC: All right. You’re in.
Iron Bull: Excellent. [34]

33 - Don’t make me regret this.
PC: You run your reports part Leliana before sending them. You send nothing she doesn’t approve. If this turns out to be a trick, of if your reports compromise the Inquisition, Cassandra will eat you alive.
Iron Bull: Wouldn’t have it any other way. [34]

34 - Scene continues.

Bull begins walking away.

Iron Bull: Krem, tell the men to finish their drinks on the road. The Chargers just got hired!

Krem: What about the casks, chief? We just opened them up. With axes.

Iron Bull: Find some way to seal then. You’re Tevinter right? Try blood magic.

Bull turns back to address the PC.

Iron Bull: We’ll meet you back at Haven.

The Bull’s Chargers

A messenger waits in the tavern in an alcove behind the stairs.

Krem: Inquisitor? Pardon me, Your Worship, but I’ve got a message to deliver.
Krem (interacting a second time if you walk away): I’ve got a message, when you have the time.

[Back to 4]

7 - Investigate: Why give us this message?
PC: Why did your commander send us this information?
Krem: Iron Bull wants to work for the Inquisition. He thinks you’re doing good work. He also really hates Tevinter. He’s been itching for a good chance to take on these Venatori cultists.
[Back to 4]

8 - General: We’ll think about it.
PC: We’ll consider your offer.
Krem: Thank you, Your Worship. [10]

9 - General: We welcome the help.

Iron Bull (non-Qunari PC): Inquisitor! Glad you could make it! Come on, have a seat. Drinks’ll be here in a minute.

Dialogue options:

  • General (Qunari PC): I greet you, fellow Qunari. [11]
  • General (Qunari PC): That was a silly bet. [12]

Iron Bull: Yeah, let’s try to keep that to a minimum. Makes the boys twitchy. [16]

12 - General: That was a silly bet.
PC: If you think someone would just make up rumors of a Qunari Inquisitor, you deserve to lose that money.
Iron Bull: Well, I don’t know. It could have just been someone with a big spiked helmet. Orlesians aren’t too bright. ‘Sides, Krem needed the money. He’s trying to impress a girl. [16]

13 - General: You must be Iron Bull
PC: Iron Bull, I presume.
Iron Bull: Yeah, the horns usually give it away. [16]

14 - General: This is an odd location.

PC: I’ve got countless people volunteering to serve the Inquisition, including the templars. Why should I pay you?
Iron Bull: Because we’re tougher, we’re smarter, and we won’t start wars as soon as your back is turned. But if I need to sweeten the deal… [21]

20 - General: You definitely seem useful.

27 - Investigate: Why would you admit this?
PC: You’re a Qunari spy, and you just… told me?
Iron Bull: I’ve heard a lot of stories about Haven. No idea which ones are true, but I get that this Corypheus guy needs killing. So whatever I am, I’m on your side.
PC: You still could have hidden what you are.
Iron Bull: From something called the Inquisition? I’d’ve been tipped sooner or later. Better you hear it right up front from me.
