A Friend In Need
The PC finds Solas grimacing into a cup at his desk. He sets the cup aside.
PC: Something wrong with your tea?
Solas: It is tea. I detest the stuff. But this morning, I need to shake the dreams from my mind. I may also need a favor.
Dialogue options:
- General: Name it. PC: You just have to ask. ㅤㅤ ㅤ
- General: Really? You? PC: But you don’t need anything. From anyone. You’re known for that. ㅤㅤ ㅤ
- General: Get on with it. PC: Tell me.
Solas stands.
Solas: One of my oldest friends has been captured by mages, forced into slavery. I heard the cry for help as I slept.
Dialogue options:
- General: We’ll rescue your friend. [1]
- General: How did you hear the cry? [2]
- General: You have friends? [3]
1 - General: We’ll rescue your friend. PC: I’d be happy to help. What did these mages use to capture your friend? Blood magic? Solas: A summoning circle, I would imagine. PC: I’m sorry? [4]
2 - General: How did you hear the cry? PC: When your friend was captured, how did he… she… Solas: It. PC: It? [4]
3 - General: You have friends? PC: I thought you didn’t have any friends besides spirits. Solas: I don’t. PC: So who is this? [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Solas: My friend is a spirit of wisdom. Unlike the spirits clamoring to enter our world through the rifts, it was dwelling quite happily in the Fade. It was summoned against its will, and wants my help to gain its freedom and return to the Fade.
5 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: Why didn’t it want in? [6] +Solas slightly approves
- Investigate: Why would they summon it? [7] +Solas slightly approves
- General: I’ll help. [8]
- General: I can go along with it. [9]
- General: I’m not saving a spirit. [10] -Solas disapproves
6 - Investigate: Why didn’t it want in? PC: I thought spirits wanted to find their way into this world. Solas: Some do, certainly, just as many Orlesian peasants wish they could journey to exotic Rivain. But not everyone wants to go to Rivain. My friend is an explorer, seeking lost wisdom and reflecting it. It would happily discuss philosophy with you, but it had no wish to come here physically. [back to 5]
7 - Investigate: Why would they summon it? PC: Do you have any idea what the mages want with your friend? Solas: No. It knows a great deal of lore and history, but a mage could learn that simply by speaking to it in the Fade. It is possible that they seek information it does not wish to give and intend to torture it. [back to 5]
8 - General: I’ll help. PC: All right. Let’s go get your friend. Solas: Thank you. I got a sense of my friend’s location before I awoke. I will mark it on our map. Scene ends.
9 - General: I can go along with it. PC: All right, Solas. Any friend of yours, apparently… Solas: Thank you. I got a sense of my friend’s location before I awoke. I will mark it on our map. Scene ends.
10 - General: I’m not saving a spirit. PC: I’ve got enough to worry about trying to help real people, Solas. Solas: Of course. I will at least mark it on our map so your forces can avoid the area. Hopefully I will be able to help it when this is over. Scene ends.
Twisted Against Its Purpose
The PC heads to the Exalted Plains.
Solas (if the PC said no before): I appreciate your willingness to change your mind, Inquisitor. I will keep this as brief as possible. Solas (if the PC agreed to help): Thank you for this, Inquisitor.
Solas: We are not far from where my friend was summoned.
Cole: Everything here is blurry. It wants to forget, but now the rocks are solid.
They come across a body.
Solas: One of the mages. Killed by arrows, it would seem.
Party comments:
- Sera: “Killed by arrows.” Helpful, yeah? Probably bandits or something.
- Varric: Bandits, by the look of it.
- Iron Bull: Look at ho the body’s positioned. He was shot while running. I’d guess bandits.
- Blackwall: Bandits, most likely.
They find more bodies as they go.
Solas: These aren’t mages. The bodies are burned, and these claw marks… No. No, no, no.
Party comments:
- Dorian: That’s a demon’s work.
- Cassandra: A demon’s work, unless I am mistaken.
- Vivienne: Demons.
Solas: (Gasps.)
A pride demon is trapped in a summoning circle further ahead.
Solas: My friend.
Solas: (Growls.)
Dialogue options:
- Arcane: They corrupted it. [1] +Solas approves
- General: Is that your friend? [2] +Solas slightly approves
- General: What happened? [3]
- General: That’s a demon. [4] -Solas slightly disapproves
1 - Arcane: They corrupted it. PC: The mages turned your friend into a demon. Solas: Yes. PC: You said it was a spirit of wisdom, not a fighter. Solas: A spirit becomes a demon when denied its original purpose. PC: So they summoned it for something so opposed to its own nature that it was corrupted. Fighting? Solas: Let us ask them. [5]
2 - General: Is that your friend? PC: Solas, you said your friend was a wisdom spirit. Solas: That is not its natural form. It has been corrupted. PC: Corrupted? Solas: Forced to act against its original purpose. What did they do, what did they do, what did they do? Solas: Perhaps we should ask. [5]
3 - General: What happened? PC: Anything you want to share, Solas? Solas: That is not its natural form. It has been corrupted. PC: Corrupted? Solas: Forced to act against its original purpose. What did they do, what did they do, what did they do? Solas: Perhaps we should ask. [5]
4 - General: That’s a demon. PC: Wisdom spirit my ass. Solas: That is not its natural form. It has been corrupted. PC: Corrupted? Solas: Forced to act against its original purpose. What did they do, what did they do, what did they do? Solas: Perhaps we should ask. [5]
5 - Scene continues.
A mage approaches them.
Mage: A mage! You’re not with the bandits? Do you have any lyrium potions? Most of us are exhausted. We’ve been fighting that demon…
Solas: You summoned that demon! Except it was a spirit of wisdom at the time. You made it kill. You twisted it against its purpose.
Mage: I… I… I understand how it might be confusing to someone who has not studied demons, but after you help us, I can…
Solas: We are not here to help you.
Dialogue options:
- General: Yes, we are. [6] -Solas slightly disapproves
- General: Solas is smarter than you are. [7] +Solas slightly approves
- General: No, we’re not. [8]
6 - General: Yes, we are. PC: We’re here to help everyone, Solas. I doubt this man deliberately unleashed a demon. Mage: Of course not! Do you think me mad? Solas: I think you stupid. That’s far worse. [9]
7 - General: Solas is smarter than you are. PC: Word of advice? I’d hold off on explaining how demons work to my friend here. Mage: Listen to me! I was one of the foremost experts in the Kirkwall Circle— Solas: Shut up. [9]
8 - General: No, we’re not. PC: We came to help your friend. Any way to do that now that it’s a demon? Mage: You cannot befriend a demon. However amicable it might appear, it must— Solas: Shut up. [9]
9 - Scene continues.
Solas: You summoned it to protect you from the bandits.
Mage: I—Yes.
Solas: You bound it to obedience, then commanded it to kill. That is when it turned. The summoning circle. We break it, we break the binding. No orders to kill, no conflict with its nature, no demon.
Mage: What? The binding is the only thing keeping the demon from killing us! Whatever it was before, it is a monster now!
Solas: Inquisitor. Please.
Dialogue options:
- Special: Rift magic could help. [10] +Solas approves
- Arcane: I can break it. [11] +Solas approves
- General: We’ll save your friend. [12] +Solas slightly approves
- General: Sure, why not? [13]
- General: It would be safer to kill it. [14] -Solas slightly disapproves
10 - Special: Rift magic could help. PC: Rifts are gateways to the Fade. I can use that magic to overload the binding more quickly. Solas: Thank you. [15]
11 - Arcane: I can break it. PC: I’ve studied rituals like this. I should be able to disrupt the binding quickly. Solas: Thank you. [15] [The wiki says this is available to templar and other mage specs, but the only plot trigger in the game file is for the arcane perk.]
12 - General: We’ll save your friend. PC: I’ll do everything I can to save your friend, Solas. Solas: Thank you. [15]
13 - General: Sure, why not? PC: Breaking that circle has to be easier than fighting a damned demon. Solas: The summoning circle is part of the demon’s current nature. It will certainly attack us as we attempt to break it. PC: Of course it will. [15]
14 - General: It would be safer to kill it. PC: It’s a demon, Solas. It’s already killed people. We can’t risk our lives hoping you can turn it nice again. Solas: I understand that, but if breaking the summoning circle can save it… Please, at least consider the option. [15]
15 - Scene continues.
The demon roars and the mage runs.
Solas: We must hurry!
Responsible
Choice dependent dialogue:
- Circle broken [1] +Solas greatly approves
- Demon killed [2] -Solas greatly disapproves
1 - Circle broken Solas kneels near the figure of the spirit. Solas: Lethallin. Ir abelas. (I’m sorry.)
Wisdom: Tel’abelas. Enasal. Ir tel’him. Ma melava halani. Mala suledin nadas. Ma ghilana mir din’an. (I’m not. I’m happy. I’m me again. You helped me. Now you must endure. Guide me into death.)
Solas: Ma nuvenin. (As you say.)
He gestures, and the spirit dissapates.
Solas: Dareth shiral.
Dialogue options:
- Special (Dalish PC): You did everything you could. [3]
- General: I’m sorry. [4]
- General: I don’t know what to say. [5]
- General: Let’s get out of here. [6]
3 - Special: You did everything you could. PC: I heard what it said. It was right. You did help it. Solas: Now I must endure. PC: Let me know if I can help. Solas: You already have. [7]
4 - General: I’m sorry. PC: I’m sorry, Solas. Solas: Don’t be. We gave it a moment’s peace before the end. That’s more than it might have had.
5 - General: I don’t know what to say. PC: Well… shit. Solas: Thank you for coming. Better my friend have a moment’s peace before the end. [7]
6 - General: Let’s get out of here. PC: Come on. There’s nothing here for you. Solas: No, there is not. Not anymore. [7]
7 - Scene continues.
Solas stands.
Solas: All that remains now is them.
2 - Demon killed Solas: (Sighs.)
Dialogue options:
- General: I’m sorry. It had to be done. [8]
- General: Friends don’t try to kill you. [9] -Solas slightly disapproves
- General: It was a demon. [10] -Solas disapproves
- Special (tried to free the demon/most of the circle broken): We tried. [11]
8 - General: I’m sorry. It had to be done. PC: The demon was dangerous, Solas. We couldn’t let it live. Solas: It is not to blame for what happened. [12]
9 - General: Friends don’t try to kill you. PC: It tried to tear your throat out, Solas. Friends don’t do that. Solas: It is not to blame for what happened. [12]
10 - General: It was a demon. PC: It wasn’t your friend, Solas. Maybe it used to be, but that was just a monster that needed killing. Solas: It is not to blame for what happened. [12]
11 - Special: We tried. PC: We did the best we could, Solas. We had no choice but to defend ourselves. Solas: I know. I appreciate the effort. Neither it nor you are responsible for what happened here. [12]
12 - Scene continues.
Solas stands.
Solas: They are.
13 - Scene continues.
The mage reappears with two others.
Mage: Thank you. We would not have risked a summoning, but the roads are too dangerous to travel unprotected.
Solas storms towards them, and the back away.
Solas: You tortured and killed my friend.
Mage: We didn’t know it was just a spirit! The book said it could help us!
Dialogue options:
- General: [Stop Solas.] [14] -Solas disapproves
- General: [Let Solas kill them.] [15] +Solas approves
14 - General: [Stop Solas.] PC: Solas… Solas: Never again. [16]
15 - General: [Let Solas kill them.] The PC remains quiet, and there are flashes of magic. Solas stands among the burning corpses. Solas: Damn them all. [16]
16 - Scene continues.
Solas: I need some time alone. I will meet you back at Skyhold.
Solas walks away, leaving the party,
Return to Skyhold
Solas enters Skyhold’s gates, and the PC descends the nearby stairs to meet him.
Solas: Inquisitor.
Dialogue options:
- General: I’m glad you returned. [1]
- General: You returned! [2]
- General: Are you back? [3]
1 - General: I’m glad you returned. PC: How are you, Solas? Solas: It hurts. It always does, but I will survive. PC: Thank you for coming back. [4]
2 - General: You returned! PC: Guess I owe Varric an ale. I wasn’t sure you were coming back. Solas: Neither was I for a time, but only a short time. [4]
3 - General: Are you back? PC: Ready to help the Inquisition? Solas: I am. [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Solas (freed/tried to free his friend): You were a true friend. You did everything you could to help. I could hardly abandon you now. Solas (killed the demon): You need me. However angry I was, I know you did not act out of hatred, but fear. Misunderstanding. How could I make this world better if I did not stay to help?
5 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: Where were you? [6] +Solas slightly approves
- Investigate: What is death like to spirits? [7] +Solas slightly approves
- Flirt: I’m here for you. [8]
- General: Goodbye. [9]
6 - Investigate: Where were you? PC: Where did you go? Solas: I found a quiet spot and went to sleep. I visited the place in the Fade where my friend used to be. It’s empty, but there are stirrings of energy in the Void. Someday something new may grow there. [back to 5]
7 - Investigate: What is death like to spirits? PC: What happens when a spirit dies? Solas: It isn’t the same as for mortals. The energy of spirits returns to the Fade. If the idea giving the spirit form is strong, or if the memory has shaped other spirits, it may someday rise again.
Dialogue options:
- Special: So it isn’t really dead? [10] +Solas slightly approves
- [Back to 5]
10 - Special: So it isn’t really dead? PC: You’re saying your friend might come back? Solas: No, not really. A spirit’s natural state is peaceful semi-existence. It is rare to be able to reflect reality. Something similar may reform one day, but it might have a different personality. It would likely not remember me. It would not be the friend I knew. [back to 5]
8 - Flirt: I’m here for you. PC: The next time you have to mourn, you don’t have to be alone.
Solas: It’s been so long since I could trust someone. Solas: It was too soon. I was too angry.
PC: I know. Solas: I’ll work on it. And thank you.
9 - General: Goodbye. PC: I’ll let you get back to work. Solas: All right
Romanced Solas (freed Solas’s friend): I know it may seem strange to you, but I appreciate what you did for my friend. That matters to me. You matter. Scene ends.
Solas (tried to free Solas’s friend and failed): I want you to know that I appreciate that you tried. That matters to me. You matter. Scene ends.
Solas (demon killed): I think it’s better if we maintain a working relationship. Less complicated that way. Romance ends. Scene ends.
Not romanced Solas (freed/tried to free Solas’s friend): Thank you again. Scene ends.
Solas (demon killed): I’ll talk to you later. Scene ends.
