Approval Quest
Favors the First Enchanter
- General: I want to help the Circle PC: Is there anything I can do to help your efforts at restoring the Circle?
Vivienne: After the Circles fell, their libraries were plundered by scavengers. A thousand years of recorded knowledge in the hands of bandits… It makes me sick to think of it. I’ve received news that some tomes have been located, if you are interested in righting this wrong.
Dialogue options:
- General: I’ll find them. [1]
- General: I can’t help with that. [2]
1 - General: I’ll find them. PC: I’ll look into it for you. Vivienne: If you can take care of this matter, the Circle would be in your debt. [3]
2 - General: I can’t help with that. PC: I don’t have time to deal with that now. Vivienne: A pity. [3]
3 - Scene continues.
After the PC returns with the tomes:
-
General: It’s done. PC: Your lost books have been found. +Vivienne greatly approves
-
Vivienne (high approval): My dear, you are a treasure.
-
Vivienne (positive approval): I never doubted you darling. You always get results.
-
Vivienne (neutral approval): Your assistance in this matter will not be forgotten, I assure you.
-
Vivienne (low approval): Thank you, my dear. This was uncharacteristically generous of you.
-
Vivienne (hostile approval): I am pleasantly surprised at your help, my dear. It is much appreciated.

Rearranging Furniture
A few workers walk by carrying furniture. The PC approaches Vivienne who lounges on her chaise.
PC: Vivienne.
Vivienne: My dear Inquisitor, whatever can I do for you?
Dialogue options:
- General: Why are there movers here? [1]
- General: Something you want to tell me? [2]
- General: This is your doing. [3]
1 - General: Why are there movers here? PC: Why did I find movers changing all my furniture? Vivienne: I’m sure I don’t know, darling. Perhaps your old furniture was full of lice and fleas. [4]
2 - General: Something you want to tell me? PC: I get the feeling there’s something you’d like to say to me. Vivienne: I’m sure I have no idea what you mean. Why in the world would I want to talk to you? [4]
3 - General: This is your doing. PC: You’re meddling with my fortress. Vivienne: Your fortress? Darling, Skyhold belongs to the Inquisition. [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Dialogue options:
- General: What’s going on here? [5]
- General: I don’t care what you do. [6]
- General: Stop being so petty! [7]
5 -General: What’s going on here? PC: What exactly is this all about, Vivienne? Vivienne: I’ll speak slowly for you, my dear. I know it’s hard to follow. [8]
6 - General: I don’t care what you do. PC: If this amuses you, go right ahead. I’ll fix it all later. Vivienne: Oh, yes. Fixing things is certainly your strong suit, isn’t it, dear? [8]
7 - General: Stop being so petty! PC: This is ridiculous! Stop acting like a child, Vivienne! Vivienne: Thus speaks the Inquisitor who has made so many mature and levelheaded choices lately! [8]
8 - Scene continues.
Vivienne (sabotaged Vivienne’s potion): Deliberately sabotaging my potion to spite me and killing an innocent man! Well done.
Vivienne (allied mages): Setting malcontents loose among the population with no safeguards to stop them should they turn into abominations! Very wise.
Vivienne: Your responsibility and foresight are a model to us all. Truly, you are a wonder to behold.
Vivienne: I rearranged some furniture. Lives are not thrown into jeopardy by this. Perhaps a little perspective is wanted here?
Dialogue options:
- General: I’m not taking your bait. [9]
- General: Why annoy me? [10]
- General: Enough manipulation. [11]
9 - General: I’m not taking your bait. PC: You can’t make me angry with a few words and a silly prank. [12]
10 - General: Why annoy me? PC: What are you playing at? What was the point of this little prank? [12]
11 - General: Enough manipulation. PC: Quit the needling and the snide remarks. If you want to pick a fight, pick a fight. Vivienne: I’m not fighting with anyone, darling. [12]
12 - Scene continues.
Vivienne: I merely wanted to see what you’d do. You are the current leader of the Inquisition. It’s good to know your limits. And now I do. Be a dear and run along now, Inquisitor. I have so much to attend to.
Why Oppose Mage Freedom
PC: How can you possibly oppose freedom for your own people?
Human mage PC Vivienne: I understand it can be hard to grasp, living sheltered within the tower and unaware of the outside world… Resenting the tower walls, the templars, the rules that keep us separate from everyone else. All mages live lives of limited possibilities. We are denied fairness due to an accident of birth. But no one said that life was fair.
Dalish PC Vivienne: Perhaps the Dalish are too isolated to grasp the realities of this world. All mages live lives of limited possibilities. We are denied fairness due to an accident of birth. But no one said that life was fair.
Dwarf/Qunari/Human non-mage PC Vivienne: You live in the world, Inquisitor. You have eyes and ears. The obvious cannot have completely escaped you.
Vivienne: The world is not made up of mages and templars or Circles and chantries. There is no “us” and no “them.” There are only people, people who must share a world which is not portioned equally among all. “My own people” want a larger share of the world, uncaring that they have already been granted great power.
Dialogue options:
- General: They didn’t ask for power. [1]
- General: That doesn’t add up. [2]
- General: It should be made fair. [3]
1 - General: They didn’t ask for power. PC: That’s not their fault. They can’t help what they are. Vivienne: Wolves cannot live peacefully among sheep, no matter how much they regret being wolves. [4]
2 - General: That doesn’t add up. PC: Granting mages freedom doesn’t take freedom from anyone else. Vivienne: But that’s precisely what it does, my dear. [4]
3 - General: It should be made fair. PC: It doesn’t matter that the world isn’t fair. We should make it fair. Vivienne: Fair to whom? [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Vivienne: The wolves howl and claw at the fences that hold them back. Take pity, and you let them loose among the lambs. And what do the sheep do? Panic, and the scent of their fear drives the wolves to attack.
Dialogue options:
- General: So teach them not to fear. [5] +Vivienne slightly approves
- General: That’s kind of a stretch. [6]
- General: They deserve what happens. [7] -Vivienne slightly disapproves
5 - General: So teach them not to fear. PC: It will take time, but people can learn not to fear magic. Vivienne: One cannot unlearn a primal fear. Like fire or heights, it is not about prejudice. It is about survival. [8]
6 - General: That’s kind of a stretch. PC: You’re taking the analogy a little far, don’t you think? Vivienne: No, the example doesn’t do the situation justice. Every creature knows a wolf. How do you recognize a mage? [8]
7 - General: They deserve what happens. PC: They destroy themselves then, and they deserve it. Vivienne: Then how curious that you care what my opinion might be. Let them fight it out and see who is right and who is dead. [8]
8 - Scene continues.
Vivienne: I care for the witch hunts that will come. I care for the angry mobs who string up mages on gibbets for the vultures. I care that my stupid brethren will kill and be killed by frightened people defending their families from monsters. I will stand in opposition to that, whatever you may do.
High Approval
Good Taste
The PC approaches Vivienne on the balcony.
Dialogue varies based on decor around Skyhold
- Vivienne (Orlesian throne): The new throne in the great hall is marvelous, my dear! Your taste is impeccable.
- Vivienne (Chantry throne): Have I told you how much I like the throne you placed in the great hall? The Chantry symbolism adds just the right touch.
- Vivienne (Orlesian drapery): The Orlesian silk drapes in the castle are to die for, my dear. Excellent choice.
- Vivienne (Orlesian props): I adore what you’ve done with the décor, my dear. Such good taste.
- Vivienne (other): You’ve made such intriguing design choices for the castle, my dear. They must be inspired.
Dialogue options:
- General: You’re too kind. [1]
- General: You inspired it. [2]
- General: Josephine picks everything. [3]
1 - General: You’re too kind. PC: Thank you, Vivienne. I’m glad you approve.
Vivienne (post-WEWH): Once this business with Corypheus is done, I’ll take you to Val Royeaux. You should meet my seamstress. Vivienne (pre-WEWH): When things have settled down a bit, I will take you to Val Royeaux and introduce you to my seamstress.
2 - General: You inspired it. PC: I strive to match your elegant sense of style.
Vivienne (post-WEWH): Once this business with Corypheus is done, I’ll take you to Val Royeaux. You should meet my seamstress. Vivienne (pre-WEWH): When things have settled down a bit, I will take you to Val Royeaux and introduce you to my seamstress.
3 - General: Josephine picks everything. PC: I just let Josephine pick whatever she wants. Vivienne: There’s wisdom in knowing when to defer to someone else’s expertise, Inquisitor.
4 - Scene continues. Vivienne: And appearances are important. We can’t have you mistaken for a commoner.
Dialogue options:
- General (Dalish/Quanri/dwarf PC): I am a commoner. [5]
- General (human PC): I don’t mind. [6]
- General: I suppose you’re right. [7] +Vivienne approves
- General: I should be one of them. [8]
- General: I can’t be materialistic. [9]
5 - General: I am a commoner. PC: What’s wrong with being a commoner? Vivienne: There’s nothing wrong with your birth, my dear, but you need to be an inspiration to the people. [10]
6 - General: I don’t mind. PC: I’ve never been much concerned with maintaining the distinction of rank. Vivienne: It’s not about rank, darling. It’s about power. [10]
7 - General: I suppose you’re right. PC: I suppose it’s important to show that we’re an authority to be respected. Vivienne: Not just respected, my dear: awed, feared, aspired to. [10]
8 - General: I should be one of them. PC (male PC): If I want them to see me as a man of the people, I should look like one of them. PC (female PC): I should look like a commoner. I need to be perceived as a woman of the people.
Vivienne: By all means, appeal to the common folk, but be a figure that inspires them. [10]
9 - General: I can’t be materialistic. PC: I can’t let them think Andraste’s Herald is hung up on material things. Vivienne: Of course not, my dear, but you also can’t allow the powers of the land to think you run this organization on prayer alone. [10]
10 - Scene continues.
Vivienne: You command an army of the faithful outfitted by the coin of the nobility. You must be a [person] who the common folk aspire to be and to whom the nobility bow.
Dialogue options:
- General: That’s a lot to live up to. [11] +Vivienne slightly approves
- General: And style is enough? [12] +Vivienne slightly approves
- General: Let them judge me by deeds. [13] -Vivienne slightly disapproves
11 - General: That’s a lot to live up to. PC: That’s quite a lot for one person to pull off, don’t you think? Vivienne: It is a challenge all great leaders must face, Inquisitor. [14]
12 - General: And style is enough? PC: And you think I can accomplish this purely through fashion? Vivienne: It is a weapon in your arsenal. Don’t overlook it, my dear. [14]
13 - General: Let them judge me by deeds. PC: My actions will inspire them. Appearances don’t matter. Vivienne: It would be a lovely world if we were all judged purely on our conduct, my dear, but it would not be this world. [14]
14 - Scene continues.
Vivienne (male PC): As the stories of the Inquisition spread, more and more people will wonder if you are the man they say you are. Vivienne (female PC): The stories of your accomplishments will spread, and, with them, doubt. Are you truly the woman from the tales?
Vivienne: They will question what they’ve heard, but they will believe what they see. They must see someone greater than legends.
Dialogue options:
- General: There are others. [15]
- General: And if I fail? [16] +Vivienne slightly approves
- General: This seems pointless. [17] -Vivienne disapproves
- Special: You hold the Divine to that? [18] +Vivienne approves Divine: +5 Vivienne
15 - General: There are others. PC: There are plenty of others in the Inquisition who can serve to inspire the people. It doesn’t have to be me. Vivienne: My dear, ask yourself what will become of you if the Inquisition can endure on its own. If you are no longer necessary to move the faithful, you’re a liability, a rival to those who would use the power you’ve amassed. Don’t follow Andraste’s path into the bonfire, Inquisitor. Scene ends.
16 - General: And if I fail? PC: And if I don’t live up to the stories, what can I expect from the disappointed masses? Vivienne: There is nothing more vicious than the public turning on a fallen idol. They will blame you for not being the hero they wanted. Their anger will be like a hornets’ nest smashed open. Simple and vicious. Respect that, and they are easy to control. Scene ends.
17 - General: This seems pointless. PC: All of this seems shallow and trivial. Vivienne: People, at their hearts, are shallow and trivial, Inquisitor. If you want to rule them, you must understand that they are simple creatures. Simple and vicious. Respect that, and they are easy to control. Scene ends.
18 - Special: You hold the Divine to that? PC: f that’s your standard for me, what does the Divine have to live up to? Vivienne: Andraste and the Maker cast very large shadows. The Divine absolutely must set the example for all Thedas. She must seem to be the embodiment of the Maker to the faithful. She needs the authority of the Maker and the charisma of Andraste. It will be no small task to fill that vacant throne. Scene ends.
Let’s Talk About Our Friends
PC: What are you r thoughts on the others in the Inquisiton?
Dialogue options:
- Dorian [1]
- Blackwall [2]
- Sera [3]
- Cole[4]
- Varric [5]
- Solas [6]
- Cassandra [7]
1 - Dorian:
Not romanced Vivienne: Our dear Lord Dorian is very sure of himself, isn’t he? Let’s hope he doesn’t get his confidence crushed.
Romanced
- Vivienne: You of course mean to speak of your Tevinter paramour. I doubt I can be impartial about him. I have been a Circle mage far too long… But he does have a great sense of fashion. I’ll give him that.
- Vivienne: You of course mean to speak of your Tevinter paramour. I admit he’s quite charming. I can see how he’s stolen your heart. f0c67cf0-162a-491b-9407-2afbb0200190 [Not sure of the exact trigger on this one]
- Vivienne (post-breakup): You want to talk about dear Lord Dorian. You can admit it, darling. I’d heard that you were no longer keeping his company. I do hope everything is all right.
2 - Blackwall
Not romanced, personal quest not started Vivienne: Blackwall is a useful sort of fellow, but he’s perhaps too eager to please. He reminds me of a pup begging for attention.
Romanced, personal quest not-started Vivienne: You seem quite fond of our Warden, Blackwall. I think it’s charming.
Romanced, personal quest started Vivienne: I know you were attached to him, my dear. Perhaps his absence will set your mind at ease.
Post-Revelations, not romanced Vivienne: Blackwall surprised me. I never would have thought him capable of carrying off such deception.
- Vivienne (left in prison): He was tolerably useful, but I’m sure we can find someone else to poke things to death.
- Vivienne (given to the Wardens): Generous, you giving him a chance at redemption. Let’s see if he manages it.
- Vivienne (freed to atone): You were quite forgiving. I hope he fares better as a Rainier than a Blackwall.
- Vivienne (imprisoned): A bit dangerous, though, continuing this Warden charade. Let us hope nothing further comes of it.
Post-Revelations, romanced Vivienne: Blackwall surprised me. I never would have thought him capable of carrying off such deception.
Given to the Wardens
- Vivienne (broke up during judgement): His betrayal must have stung. It’s very generous of you, giving him a chance to redeem himself.
- Vivienne: He is an extremely fortunate man to remain in your good graces after such a lie. I hope he will do well.
Freed to atone
- Vivienne (broke up during judgement): You were very kind to him, however horribly he betrayed your trust.
- Vivienne: He’s a lucky man. Few women would have forgiven such a lie. Let’s hope he lives up to your faith in him.
Imprisoned
- Vivienne: Be careful, my dear. Men are simple creatures. Resentment in his present circumstance could become an issue.
3 - Sera:
Vivienne: Sera I certainly a colorful character. Like a poisonous toad, only without the manners.
Romanced
- Vivienne: I would never criticize your choice in paramours, my dear. I’m sure Sera’s affection for you is genuine. She’s nowhere near clever enough to be after you for your wealth or position, so it must be true love.
- Vivienne (after break-up): I understand that you and Sera are no longer a couple. Don’t worry, my dear. You can do so much better.
4 - Cole:
Vivienne: Whether Cole is a spirit or a demon is irrelevant. Neither can be trusted, my dear. Remember that.
5 - Varric:
Vivienne: What exactly is Varric’s role in the Inquisition? Aside from irritating Cassandra?
Vivienne: So Varric was spying on us all this time? I’m impressed. I never would have taken him for a player of the Game. I’ll have to watch him more closely from now on. fae0e7ba-1667-413b-9680-10ea0a6f0165 [I can’t find the plot flag for this?]
6 - Solas:
Vivienne: I don’t know what to make of Solas. So much knowledge and so little personal history… I find that… peculiar. Don’t you?
Romanced. Vivienne: Is it my imagination, dear, or have certain… lingering looks passed between you and our Solas?
After Solas has left. Vivienne: It’s strange not having Solas hanging about looking smug. I wonder where he’s gone.
7 - Cassandra:
Vivienne: I admire Cassandra’s determination. If she had a little charm, she could be a remarkable leader.
Romanced Vivienne: My dear, if you want to talk about Cassandra, just say so. I see how you dote upon her. You’re a fetching couple, you know. Or you would be if Cassandra ever smiled.
