Recruitment

An Invitation

After addressing the Chantry at Val Royeaux, a messenger stops the PC by the gates.

Messenger: You are the Herald of Andraste, are you not? I have an invitation for you.

The invitation reads:

You are cordially invited to attend my salon held at the château of Duke Bastien de Ghislain

Yours,
Vivienne de Fer
First Enchanter of Montsimmard
Enchanter to the Imperial Court

The PC arrives at Duke Bastien’s estate, and is announced as they enter the parlor.

Butler: [Master/Lady] Adaar of the Inquisition.
Butler: [Master/Lady] Cadash of the Inquisition.
Butler: [Master/Lady]  Lavellan on behalf of the Inquisition.
Butler: [Lord/Lady] Trevelyan of Ostwick, representing the Inquisition.

If already named Inquisitor:

Butler: Inquisitor Adaar.
Butler: Inquisitor Cadash.
Butler: Inquisitor Lavellan
Butler: Inquisitor Trevelyan.

Comte: What a pleasure to meet you, my lady. Seeing the same faces at every event becomes so tiresome.
Comte: A pleasure, ser. We so rarely have a chance to meet anyone new. It’s always the same crowd at these parties.

Comte: So you must be a guest of Madame de Fer. Or are you here for Duke Bastien?

Comtess: Are you here on business? I have heard the most curious tales of you. I cannot imagine half of them are true.

1 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: You know of me? [2]
  • Investigate: Madam de Fer? [3]
  • Investigate: Tell me about the duke. [4]
  • General: They exaggerate a bit. [5]
  • General: It’s all true. [6]
  • General: It’s idle gossip. [7]

2 - Investigate: You know of me?
PC: What have you heard of me?
Comtess: They say Andraste herself delivered you from the Fade to battle the Old Gods for the fate of the world.
Comtess: They say you burst into the templar stronghold and dragged them back to the faith by the scruff of their necks.
Comtess: Some say that when the Veil opened, Andraste herself delivered you from the Fade.
[Back to 1]

3 - Investigate: Madam de Fer?
PC: I’m not familiar with that name. I was invited here by First Enchanter Vivienne.
Comte: “Madame de Fer” is a… fond nickname the court has given Lady Vivienne.
Comtess: I’ve heard she finds it amusing.
[Back to 1]

4 - Investigate: Tell me about the duke.
PC: I’ve heard very little about Duke Bastien.
Comtess: He hasn’t been seen much at court lately.
Comte: His business with the Council of Heralds often takes him from home for long periods.  It’s can’t be good for a man of his years.
Comtess: And, of course, there’s the civil war. Bastien probably wishes to distance himself from the actions of his one-time son-in-law.
Comte: Tearing up the Dales in a foolish bid for power? It will end in disgrace for Gaspard. Everyone knows it.
[Back to 1]

5 - General: They exaggerate a bit.
PC: Some of those storytellers  may have gotten carried away.
Comtess: But only for the best effect. The Inquisition is a ripe subject for wild tales. [8]

6 - General: It’s all true.
PC: Everything you’ve heard? Completely true.
Comtess: Better and better. The Inquisition should come to more of these parties. [8]

7 - General: It’s idle gossip.
PC: I don’t care what they say about me.
Comtess: You should. The Game has crushed far more powerful institutions than your Inquisition. [8]

8 - Scene continues.

Marquis: The Inquisition? What a load of pig shit! Washed up sisters and crazed Seekers? No one can take them seriously. Everyone knows it’s just an excuse for a bunch of political outcasts to grab power.

Dialogue options:

  • General: We’re restoring peace. [9]
  • General: I want justice for the Divine. [10]
  • General: This is a holy calling. [11]
  • General: What’s your point? [12]
  • Special (if In Hushed Whispers completed): Tell that to the mages. [13]
  • Special (if Champions of the Just completed): The templars say otherwise. [14]

9 - General: We’re restoring peace.
PC: The Inquisition is working to restore peace and order to Thedas.
Marquis: Here comes the outsider, restoring peace with an army! [15]

10 - General: I want justice for the Divine.
PC: That’s not true. I’m just searching for Divine Justinia’s killer.
Marquis: Of course you are. I’m sure your army is out scouring the hills for her murderer as we speak. [15]

11 - General: This is a holy calling.
PC: I was chosen by Andraste herself to carry out the Maker’s will.
Marquis: You dare to speak of the Maker’s will with foul magic dripping from your hands? [15]

12 - General: What’s your point?
PC: I’ve never made any claims to holiness. What’s your point? Marquis: In front of all these people, you admit to being a pretentious usurper! [15]

13 - Special: Tell that to the mages.
PC: I saved the city of Redcliffe and brought the mages to order.
Marquis: Saving dog lords and bringing their beasts to heel is hardly an accomplishment. [15]

14 - Special: The templars say otherwise.
PC: I brought the templars back into the fold.
Marquis: You rounded up a bunch of dazed lyrium addicts. Well done! Am I supposed to applaud? [15]

15 - Scene continues.

Marquis: We know what your “Inquisition” truly is. If you were a [person] of honor, you’d step outside and answer the charges.

Vivienne appears on the upper floor and freezes the Marquis.

Vivienne: My dear Marquis, how unkind of you to use such language in my house… to my guests. You know such rudeness is… intolerable.

Marquis: Madame Vivienne, I humbly beg your pardon!

Vivienne: You should. Whatever am I going to do with you, my dear?

Vivienne (to PC): My [lady/lord], you’re the wounded party in this unfortunate affair. What would you have me do with this foolish, foolish man?

Dialogue options:

  • Let him go. [16]
  • Kill him. [17]
  • I don’t care. [17]

16 - Let him go.
PC: I think the Marquis has seen the error of his ways.
Vivienne: By the grace of Andraste, you have your life, my dear. Do be more careful with it.
Marquis: [Coughing as he unfreezes.] [19]

17 - Kill him.
PC: He insulted my honor. I want him dead.
Vivienne: And this, Marquis, is why one must always be courteous to one’s fellow guests.
Vivienne: Someone be a dear and clean this mess up. We can’t have him cluttering up the dance floor. [19]

18 - I don’t care.
PC: The Marquis doesn’t interest me. Do whatever you like with him.
Vivienne: Poor marquis, issuing challenges and hurling insults like some Ferelden dog lord. And all dressed up in your Aunt Solange’s doublet. Didn’t she give you that to wear to the Grand Tourney? To think, all the brave chevaliers who will be competing left for Markham this morning… and you’re still here. Were you hoping to sate your damaged pride by defeating the Herald of Andraste in a public duel?
Vivienne: Or did you think her blade could put an end to the misery of your failure?
Vivienne: Or did you think his sword would end the shame of your failure?
Marquis: [Coughing as he unfreezes.]
Vivienne: Run along my dear. Do give my regards to your aunt. [19]

19 - Scene continues.

Vivienne takes the PC to a secluded part of the estate, overlooking a courtyard.

Vivienne: I’m delighted you could attend this little gathering. I’ve so wanted to meet you.

Vivienne (human mage PC): I’ve heard so much about you, Magus Trevelyan. Only a single rebel survived the explosion that killed the Divine. One hardly knows what to think.

Vivienne: Allow me to introduce myself. I am Vivienne, First Enchanter of Montsimmard and Enchantress to the Imperial Court.

20 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: What about the Marquis? [21]
  • General: A pleasure to meet you. [22]
  • General: Interesting party so far. [23]
  • General: What do you want? [24]

21 - Investigate: What about the Marquis?

Marquis killed:
PC: Can you get away with killing a nobleman like that?
Vivienne: He attempted to draw his weapon, unprovoked, in the presence of witnesses. Duels are not fought in the drawing room. By chevalier code, his life was forfeit from the moment his hand fell to his hilt.
[Back to 20]

Marquis spared:
PC: Is that Marquis going to pose a problem?
Vivienne: His aunt is the vicomtesse of Mont-de-Glace. Not a powerful family but well-respected… and very devout. Alphonse will be disowned for this. It’s not the first time he’s brought his aunt disgrace, but I’m sure it will be the last. And after such public humiliation, I expect he’ll run off to the Dales to join the empress’s war efforts. Either to make a good end or to win back a modicum of respect.
[Back to 20]

22 - General: A pleasure to meet you.
PC: Charmed, Lady Vivienne.
Vivienne: Ah, but I didn’t invite you to the château for pleasantries. [25]

23 - General: Interesting party so far.
PC: Your salon has certainly exceeded my expectations so far.
Vivienne: I’m glad to keep you entertained, my dear.

24 - General: What do you want?
PC: You invited me here. What is it you want?
Vivienne: I wanted to meet you face to face. It is important to consider one’s connections carefully.

25 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: With Divine Justinia dead, the Chantry is in shambles.

Vivienne: Only the Inquisition might restore sanity and order to our frightened people.

Vivienne (templars recruited, pre-skyhold): But you have restored the templars to order. No small feat.

Vivienne (mages as allies, pre-skyhold): But you have brought the rebel mages together under your banner.  An impressive accomplishment.

Vivienne (mages as prisoners, pre-skyhold): And you seem to have won over the fractious rebel mages. I didn’t think such a thing was possible.

Vivienne (post-skyhold): But the faithful flock to your banner, pinning their hopes on you to deliver them from chaos.

Vivienne: As the leader of the last loyal mages of Thedas, I feel it only right that I lend my assistance to your cause.

26 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: What are loyal mages? [27]
  • Investigate: What do you get out of this? [28]
  • Investigate: Do you support the Chantry? [29]
  • Investigate: What assistance do you bring? [30]
  • Flirt: Is this business or pleasure? [31]
  • Welcome aboard. (Recruit Vivienne into the Inquisition.) [32]
  • I don’t think so. (Refuse the alliance with the Circle.) [33]

27 - Investigate: What are loyal mages?
PC: You say you lead the last of the loyal mages. Loyal to whom?
Vivienne: To the people of Thedas of course.  We have not forgotten the commandment, as some have, that magic exists to serve man. I support any effort to restore such order.

Dialogue options (if sided with mages):

  • Investigate (mages as prisoners): Do you support the circle? [34]
  • Investigate (mages as allies): You don’t like the rebels? [35]

34 - Investigate: Do you support the circle?
PC: So you’re in favor of returning the mages to the Circle, then?
Vivienne: Where else can mages safely learn to master their talents? We need an institution to protect and nurture magic.  Maker knows, magic will find neither on its own.
[Back to 26]
PC: You don’t care much for the rebels, I take it. Are you aware they’ve been offered an alliance?
Vivienne: With proper guidance from the Inquisition, I think my colleagues will return to their senses. Surely they will have to realize their rebellion endangers everyone.
[Back to 26]

**35 - Investigate: You don’t like the rebels?
**28 - Investigate: What do you get out of this?
PC: What’s in this for you?
Vivienne: The same thing anyone gets by fighting this chaos. The chance to meet my enemy, to decide my fate. I won’t wait quietly for destruction.
[Back to 26]

29 - Investigate: Do you support the Chantry?
PC: Are you devout? What’s your opinion of the Chantry?
Vivienne: I was a great admirer of the late Divine Justinia V. The Chantry at it’s best. Unites the disparate cultures of Thedas and looks after its vulnerable. Had she lived, Justinia could have accomplished so much.
PC: You’re aware the Chantry hasn’t sanctioned this Inquisition…
Vivienne: The Chantry is leaderless. They’re in no positions to officially sanction anything. Besides, my dear, if there is one virtue the Chant of Light teaches us, it is forgiveness. Once the Inquisition has sealed the Breach, I’m sure the new divine will not care in the slightest about official permission.
[Back to 26]

30 - Investigate: What assistance do you bring?
PC: What exactly can you do for the Inquisition?
Vivienne: I am well versed in the politics of the Orlesian Empire. I know every member of the Imperial Court personally. I have all the resources remaining to the circle at my disposal. And I am a mage of no small talent. Will that do?

Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: You’ll work inside the court? [36]
  • [Back to 26]

36 - Investigate: You’ll work inside the court?
PC: Does that mean you’d be aiding the Inquisition from the Imperial Palace?
Vivienne: Ordinarily, I would be happy to serve as liaison to the court, but these are not ordinary times. The Veil has been ripped apart, and there is a hole in the sky. It is now the duty of mage to work towards sealing the breach., and so I would join the Inquisition on the battlefield.
[Back to 26]

31 - Flirt: Is this business or pleasure?
PC: Is your interest in the Inquisition, Madame de Fer, or is it more personal?
Vivienne: Aren’t you charming? It’s professional, of course.
[Back to 26]

32 - Welcome aboard.
PC: The Inquisition will be happy to have you, Lady Vivienne.
Vivienne: Great things are beginning, my dear. I can promise you that. [37]

33 - I don’t think so.
PC: I don’t need your help.
Vivienne: I see. A pity. Good day, my dear. Do enjoy the salon. [37]

37 - Scene ends.

The Threat Remains

Addressing the War

Origin related dialogue:

  • Human mage PC [1]
  • Non-human mage PC [2]
  • Non-mage PC [3]

1 - Human mage PC:

Vivienne: You came from the Circle at Ostwick, did you not? Senior Enchanter Lydia was a dear friend of mine. Were you at all acquainted?

Dialogue options:

  • General: She was my mentor. [4]
    • Vivienne approves
  • General: I studied with her a bit. [5]
  • General: I didn’t know her well. [6]
  • General: We didn’t get along. [7]
    • Vivienne disapproves

4 - General: She was my mentor.
PC: Lydia was my mentor. She was almost a mother to me.
Vivienne: I never met a wiser soul than her. [8]

5 - General: I studied with her a bit.
PC: Yes, she was one of my instructors.
Vivienne: You are lucky to have studied with her. Lydia had a wealth of knowledge. [8]

6 - General: I didn’t know her well.
PC: I saw her around the tower, but we never really talked.
Vivienne: What a pity. She was a great teacher. [8]

7 - General: We didn’t get along.
PC: I knew her. We rarely saw eye to eye.
Vivienne: I suppose you don’t miss her, then. [8]

8 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: I understand she was killed by one of her own students when the Ostwick Circle rebelled. I think we both agree that this war must come to an end. [15]

2 - Non-human mage PC:

Vivienne: You’ve never been to a Circle, as far as I can tell, yet you’re remarkably skilled. Were you self-taught?

Dialogue options:

  • General (Qunari PC): I had help. [9]
  • General (Qunari PC): Vashoth have their own ways. [10]
  • General (Dalish PC): I was trained by my Keeper. [11]
  • General (Dalish PC): It’s Dalish magic. [12]
  • General: Close enough. [13]

9 - General (Qunari PC): I had help.
PC: Another Tal-Vashoth saarebas trained me.
Vivienne: I had heard that magic practiced by the Qunari and Tal-Vashoth was formidable, but I never had the chance to observe it myself. [14]

10 - General (Qunari PC): Vashoth have their own ways.
PC: My people know a thing or two about magic.
Vivienne: I had heard that magic practiced by the Qunari and Tal-Vashoth was formidable, but I never had the chance to observe it myself. [14]

11 - General (Dalish PC): I was trained by my Keeper.
PC: Not at all. I studied magic with Keeper Deshanna.
Vivienne: I have heard about the traditions of magic among the Dalish Keepers, but it’s all thirdhand. [14]

12 - General (Dalish PC): It’s Dalish magic.
PC: The Dalish have their own traditions you know. The Circle isn’t the only authority on magic. [14]

13 - General: Close enough.
PC: I figured it out on my own
Vivienne: You’re fortunate to be a quick learner. [14]

14 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: In my experience, nothing is more deadly to a young mage than a lack of knowledge. Which makes the current state of things… precarious.

Vivienne (to Qunari PC): But you already know this.
Vivienne (to Dalish PC): What do you imagine will happen if the Circles are not restored? Do you foresee the Dalish taking us all under their wing? [15]

3 - Non-mage PC:

Vivienne: I met an elven mage earlier. Solas, I believe he was called. I admit, I was surprised. I didn’t expect to find mages among the Inquisition. Tell me: why were you at the Divine Conclave? [15]

15 - Scene continues. (End of origin specific dialogue)

Dialogue options:

  • General: We need the circle restored. [16]
    • Vivienne greatly approves
  • General: This chaos harms everyone. [17]
    • Vivienne greatly approves
  • General: Mages should be free. [18]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: Justice is all that matters. [19]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: The templars made their beds. [20]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • General: The rebels are apostates. [21]
    • Vivienne greatly approves

16 - General: We need the circle restored.
PC: The Circle had plenty of problems, but it’s an institution we sorely need.
Vivienne: I wish more people understood the truth of this. [22]

17 - General: This chaos harms everyone.
PC: The war benefits no one. It must end, and order must be restored.
Vivienne: If only the rebels saw things so clearly. [22]

18 - General: Mages should be free.
PC: Mages deserve the same freedom as anyone else.
Vivienne: I hear that so often. It must be a great comfort to the common folk to know that their survival is trivial compared to our freedom. [22]

19 - General: Justice is all that matters.
PC: If was is the only solution to injustice, then so be it.
Vivienne: Do you tell that to the victims? That their suffering is all the more meaningful because it’s for  a great cause? I’m sure that makes everything better. [22]

20 - General: The templars made their beds.
PC: I don’t like the war either, but templars won’t listen to reason.
Vivienne: Well, on that we agree. [22]

21 - General: The rebels are apostates.
PC: There can be no peace with these apostates.
Vivienne: Well, on that we agree. [22]

22 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: Justinia’s death shattered the balance  of power in Thedas. If it is not restored quickly, countless lives will be lost. Mages, templars, innocent people of all kinds now look to the Inquisition to decide their fate.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I’ll do all I can. [23]
  • General: And you’ll help decide. [24]
  • General: Their fate is in their hands. [25]

23 - General: I’ll do all I can.
PC: I’ll try not to let them down.
Vivienne: Failure is not a luxury we can afford, my dear. [26]

24 - General: And you’ll help decide.
PC: That’s why you wanted to be here: to have a hand in deciding that fate.
Vivienne: Wouldn’t you? [26]

25 - General: Their fate is in their hands.
PC: I’m not deciding anything.
Vivienne: Actions have consequences my dear. Do not imagine yours will go unnoticed by history. [26]

26 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: For almost a thousand years, the world believed it was in the hands of the Maker. And now many believe you are the agent of His will. Whatever the truth is, that belief gives you power.

Dialogue options:

  • General: No one should have that power. [27]
  • General: I’ll use it to change things. [28]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: Andraste chose me. [29]
  • General: The Chantry will be restored. [30]
    • Vivienne approves

27 - General: No one should have that power.
PC: Nobody should claim to know the will of the Maker. Not me, and not the Chantry.
Vivienne: Perhaps nobody should. But if no one leads the way, many will be left behind in darkness. [31]

28 - General: I’ll use it to change things.
PC: If that’s true, then I’ll put it to good use.
Vivienne: I suppose we’ll see. [31]

29 - General: Andraste chose me.
PC: I was given this blessing by Andraste herself. The power is not mine, but hers.
Vivienne: We can only hope she offers you better guidance than she does the rest of us. [31]

30 - General: The Chantry will be restored.
PC: Once this is over, the task of speaking for the Maker will be the Chantry’s problem again.
Vivienne: That’s reassuring to hear. [31]

31 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: I’ve stolen enough of your time, my dear. Don’t let me keep you.

Scene ends.

Champions of the Just/In Hushed Whispers

Something to Consider

The PC approaches Vivienne in Haven’s Chantry.

Choice dependent dialogue:

  • Completed Champions of the Just [1]
  • Completed In Hushed Whispers [2]

1 - Completed Champions of the Just:

Vivienne: It is good that you salvaged as many templars as you did, my dear. We will need every templar, but they will require proper management. We also need to increase our lyrium supplies considerably. The Chantry may still have stockpiles we can use.

Dialogue options:

  • General (templars conscripted): Withhold it. Let them suffer. [3]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: We’re not feeding addictions. [4]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: That may not be enough. [5]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • General: Cullen can handle that. [6]

3 - General: Withhold it. Let them suffer.
PC: Let the lyrium run out for a while. It’ll put the templars in their place.
Vivienne: My dear, they’re no use to us feverish and hallucinating. [7]

4 - General: We’re not feeding addictions.
PC: We’re not enabling these addicts. We’ll cut them off.
Vivienne: How noble of you to recruit the templars only to leave them fevered and powerless in camp. [7]

5 - General: That may not be enough.
PC: We likely need more than they have. Our enemies have magic that can rip open the Fade.
Vivienne: Indeed. We may need Josephine to open negotiations with the dwarves directly. [7]

6 - General: Cullen can handle that.
PC: Cullen will look into it. He must already have a supply line.
Vivienne: He undoubtedly did, but it was established before the Divine Conclave. The situation has changed. [7]

7 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: The Breach has done more than disfigure the sky. The Veil itself is broken. All mages, no matter how skilled, are now in danger of drawing demons to them. Before this crisis is over, you may find that templars, flawed as they may be, are all that stand between us and chaos. [13]

2 - Completed In Hushed Whispers:

Vivienne: If Fiona and her malcontents are joining us as allies, we need to be prepared. Abominations are inevitable.
Vivienne: So Fiona and her malcontents are finally under proper authority. That’s an excellent beginning, my dear. We will have to discuss how to administrate this new asset.

Vivienne: Cullen doesn’t have enough templars to handle incidents. Some of the rank and file need to be trained.

Dialogue options:

  • General (mages allied): Absolutely not. [8]
    • Vivienne disapproves
  • General: We can control the mages. [9]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: Keep them hidden. [10]
    • Vivienne approves
  • General: Good idea. [11]
    • Vivienne slightly approves

8 - General: Absolutely not.
PC: These mages joined us freely. We don’t need templars to contain them.
Vivienne: My dear, I don’t think you’ve grasped the magnitude of the situation. The Veil is broken, and the raw power of the Fade rushes out like floodwaters through a shattered levee. You know as well as I do that mages attract demons where the Veil is thin. And if demons can walk our world with no blood magic to summon them, how safe do you think our “allies” are? [12]

9 - General: We can control the mages.
PC: We can handle the mages. There’s no need for templars.
Vivienne: Have any of these men faced an abomination before, my dear? Have you? The Veil is broken, and the raw power of the Fade rushes out like floodwaters through a shattered levee. In ordinary places where the Veil is weak, magic is much more likely to attract demons. And if demons can walk our world with no blood magic to summon them, how safe do you think our “allies” are? [12]

10 - General: Keep them hidden.
PC: Train our people, but keep it a secret. Let the mages think they’re not being watched.
Vivienne: I like the way you think, darling. I’ll have a word with Cullen. We are reliant on his people absolutely. [12]

11 - General: Good idea.
PC: The last thing we need are abominations running amok.
Vivienne (med/high approval): I knew you would have a proper grasp of the situation.
Vivienne (neutral/low approval): It’s good to see someone with an understanding of the situation.
Vivienne: I’ll have a word with Cullen. We are reliant on his people absolutely. [12]

12 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: There has never been a greater threat to mages than the Breach. Until it is closed, no one is safe. [13]

13 - End of choice specific dialogue.

Dialogue options:

  • General (sided with templars): You’re probably right. [14]
  • General: I’m not as confident in them. [15]
  • General: You don’t trust mages. [16]
  • General: Do you pose a risk? [17]

14 - You’re probably right.
PC: It’s a good idea to plan for trouble.
Vivienne: I’m glad you understand. [18]

15 - I’m not as confident in them.
PC: I’m glad one of us has confidence in the templars.
Vivienne: It is not a matter of confidence. Reality does not change based on feelings. [18]

16 - You don’t trust mages.
PC: You have a low opinion of your fellow mages.
Vivienne (mage PC): It’s not a matter of opinion, my dear. I have a close relationship with reality.  Many of our colleagues do not.
Vivienne (non-mage PC): It’s not so much an opinion as grasping the obvious.[18]

17 - Do you pose a risk?
PC: If you’re seeing demons everywhere, do you believe you’re a risk? Do you believe I am?
PC: When you say mages are a danger, are you counting yourself?
Vivienne (mage PC): We are a risk, darling. Better to know it and use caution.
Vivienne (non-mage PC): Of course I am, my dear. Every mage who joins the cause is taking a calculated risk, whether they know it or not. [18]

18 - Scene continues.

Dialogue options:

  • General: That’s just Chantry rhetoric. [19]
    • Vivienne disapproves
  • General: Templars aren’t the solution. [20]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • General (Qunari PC): Vashoth have no templars. [21]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General (Dalish PC): Dalish don’t have templars. [22]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: Tevinter doesn’t think so. [23]
  • General: I agree with you. [24]
    • Vivienne approves

19 - General: That’s just Chantry rhetoric.
PC: You’re just spouting Chantry propaganda, Vivienne.
Vivienne: My dear, what a world you must live in. [28]

20 - General: Templars aren’t the solution.
PC: You’re right, but templars are a poor solution.
Vivienne: They are men, and all men are flawed. That some fail does not mean that none should try. The fact remains that there is no cure for an abomination except death. Someone must strike the killing blow. Who shall lower the blade if not a templar? [28]

21 - General: Vashoth have no templars.
PC:  There are no templars among the Vashoth.
Vivienne: My dear, your people cut the tongues from mages they deem dangerous just as the Qunari do. And they kill those they deem too weak to resist demons. Your people are no kinder than any other. For those who value survival, sentimentality is not an option. [28]

22 - General: Dalish don’t have templars.
PC: The Dalish get along just fine without templars or Circle towers.
Vivienne: As I understand it, the elves limit their risk by refusing to have more than three mages in a clan. Tell me, what becomes of the Dalish youngster who is not appointed First or Second? [28]

Dialogue options:

  • General: They’re sent to other clans. [25]

  • General: At least they die free. [26]

    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: Say what you mean. [27]

25 - General: They’re sent to other clans.
PC: If a clan can’t raise the mage, they’re sent to another that’s in need of a First or Second.
Vivienne: And if there are no clans in need of a new apprentice? For those who value survival, sentimentality is not an option. [28]

26 - General: At least they die free.
PC: It is better to die free than spend a life in captivity.
Vivienne: And would you still say that if you were that unwanted mage? What freedom do the dead enjoy? For those who value survival, sentimentality is not an option. [28]

27 - General: Say what you mean.
PC: If you want to say something about the Dalish, say it.
Vivienne: For those who value survival, sentimentality is not an option. [28]

23 - General: Tevinter doesn’t think so.
PC: I don’t think the mages of the Imperium would agree with you.
Vivienne: Drunkards rarely agree that they ought to stop drinking. I wouldn’t use them as role models. Do you know how young mages are found? A little girl has a nightmare, and in her sleep, she burns her house down. A teenage boy has a fit, and lightning rips his mother to pieces.
Vivienne (mage PC): You know how these stories go. Perhaps you lived one.
Vivienne (non-mage PC): Imagine your own childhood and what would have happened if the darkest corner of your heart had a will of its own.
Vivienne: People don’t learn the fear of magic at chantry services, my dear. They learn it from us. [28]

24 - General: I agree with you.
PC: You’re preaching to the choir, Vivienne. [28]

28 - Scene continues.

Vivienne (if “I’ll use it to change things” chosen previously): Tell me something. You said once that you wanted to change things. What future would you build for mages?

Vivienne (if “The Chantry will be restored” chosen previously): You told me that you’d see the Chantry restored. What about the Circle?

Vivienne (if “No one should have that power” or “Andraste chose me.” chosen previously): Tell me something. As you will no doubt have a hand in shaping it, what future do you see for mages?

Dialogue options:

  • General: Mages should be free. [29]
    • Vivienne greatly disapproves
  • General: We need mages in the Chantry. [30]
    • Vivienne greatly approves
      Divine: +5 Vivienne
  • General: We need the Circle back. [31]
    • Vivienne greatly approves
      Divine: +1 Vivienne

29 - General: Mages should be free.
PC: Mages should be treated like anybody else.
Vivienne (human mage PC): You are not the first to forget that the walls of our towers kept the wolves out as much as they kept us in. We hate the templars when they stand over us in judgment, but we thank them with all our hearts when they keep the mob at bay.
Vivienne (Dalish mage PC): How free did you feel living on the run, never staring too close to villages or staying in one place too long? Paint the cage any color you like. It is still a cage.
Vivienne (Qunari mage PC): With all the eyes of your fellows upon you, watching for demons, ready to cut out your tongue… how free did you feel?
Vivienne (non-mage PC): And yet, however much we may wish it, we are not like everyone else. Anyone can see that a chevalier is armed and dangerous, and they can see when his blade is about to strike. But can you spot a mage coming? And if he arrives at your stoop, can he leave his magic at the door? [32]

30 - General: We need mages in the Chantry.
PC: Mages shouldn’t be kept out of the Chantry. Who knows the dangers of magic better than a mage?
Vivienne: A curious idea. Such twists and turns your mind takes. [32]

31 - General: We need the Circle back.
PC: The Circle has to be restored if we want to keep the peace.
Vivienne: That’s comforting to hear, but you’ll find opposition to the idea even among friends. [32]

32 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: It’s something to consider, my dear.

Scene ends.

From the Ashes

A Serious Blow

Choice dependent dialogue:

  • Recruited pre-Skyhold - positive approval [1]
  • Recruited pre-Skyhold - low/neutral approval [2]
  • Recruited post-Skyhold (according to the wiki, this occurs with neutral approval, but there is nothing in the game files that confirms this and I can’t find a playthrough that triggers this dialogue. Requires further testing.) [3]

1 - Recruited pre-Skyhold - positive approval:

The PC approaches Vivienne in the courtyard, and she turns to greet them.

Vivienne: Maker! You’re a mess! Let me have a look at you. Are you all right, my dear? Were you hurt? You look dreadful.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I’m fine. [4]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • General: I’ve looked worse. [5]
  • General: We have bigger problems. [6]

4 - General: I’m fine.
PC: I’ll be fine, don’t worry.
Vivienne: You bear it well. Good. The troops will take their cue from your composure. Now… [7]

5 - General: I’ve looked worse.
PC: You should have seen me an hour ago.
Vivienne: We should do something about this dirt. We don’t need you frightening the faithful. [7]

6 - General: We have bigger problems.
PC: Ignore the dirt. Let’s get to work. We must shore up our defenses.
Vivienne: Inquisitor, you look like you’ve been dragged here behind a cart. We can’t have that, especially in front of your troops. [7]

7 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: Let’s keep up appearances. You’ve handled this crisis competently, saving as many lives as you did.  [16]

2 - Recruited pre-Skyhold - low/neutral approval

Vivienne looks up at the main hall of Skyhold and does not turn when the PC approaches.

Vivienne: It was a mistake to use Haven as a base of operations. The town was completely indefensible.

Dialogue options:

  • General: You’re right. [8]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • General: Don’t look at me. [9]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves
  • General: You can blame me later. [10]

8 - General: You’re right.
PC: It was a bad location. We should have moved sooner. [11]

9 - General: Don’t look at me.
PC: I didn’t choose Haven. Cassandra and Leliana did.
Vivienne: Accepting a bad choice blindly is hardly a virtue, darling. [11]

10 - General: You can blame me later.
PC: A lot of our people just died. We will discuss whose fault that is later.
Vivienne: Now is always the time, my dear. The past cannot be changed, and tomorrow may never come. [11]

11 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: You left yourself vulnerable to attack. It was a miscalculation, one that I’m sure you won’t repeat. [16]

3 - Recruited post-Skyhold:

The PC finds Vivienne in the loft over the main hall.

Vivienne: What a fascinating life you lead, my dear. First you fall out of the Fade, then you’re attacked by an Archdemon… If you wanted more public attention, you could have just held a ball.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Blame Corypheus. [12]
  • General: I’ll try that. [13]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • General: Don’t make jokes now. [14]

12 - General: Blame Corypheus.
PC: I didn’t do anything. Corypheus is the one who attacked us.
Vivienne: Doing nothing is exactly your mistake, my dear. [15]

13 - General: I’ll try that.
PC: I’ll talk to Josephine. Maybe we can get matching gowns before the next attack.
Vivienne: I’ve got a tailor in Val Royeaux who can work miracles, my dear, but not those sort of miracles. [15]

14 - General: Don’t make jokes now.
PC: We’ve just been attacked. Try to take that seriously.
Vivienne: Oh, believe me. I do. [15]

15 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: You left yourself vulnerable to attack. It was a miscalculation, one that I’m sure you won’t repeat.  [16]

16 - End choice dependent dialogue.

Vivienne: But the enemy struck a serious blow against you and the Inquisition. We must recognize that. You must.

Dialogue options:

  • Anxious: So much depends on me… [17]
  • Stoic: Mind your own business. [18]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • Sad: I couldn’t save them all. [19]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • Angry: Corypheus will pay for this. [20]
    • Vivienne slightly approves
  • Pleased: It worked in our favor. [21]
    • Vivienne slightly disapproves

17 - Anxious: So much depends on me…
PC: So many people are joining this fight. What if I’m only leading them to their deaths?
Vivienne: Death is a part of war, my dear, and a part of life. We cannot escape it. Those who die for the Inquisition give their lives willingly. The alternative is to forfeit all the cherish to these horrors from the sky. [22]

18 - Stoic: Mind your own business.
PC: I’m not in need of guidance, Vivienne.
Vivienne: Good. Stay on your guard. [22]

19 - Sad: I couldn’t save them all.
PC: For every person I saved, two more were cut down. I failed them.
Vivienne: You haven’t failed them, my dear. The men and women who fight for you gave their lives for a great cause, and they fought to the end. The rest still fight, and you will fail them if you give up now. [22]

20 - Angry: Corypheus will pay for this.
PC: I am not going to forgive what happened at Haven. Corypheus will answer for what he’s done.
Vivienne: You’re angry, good. Anger can save you when everything else is gone. Just make sure you put it to good use. [22]

21 - Pleased: It worked in our favor.
PC: You’re wrong. We now have a better location and far more people at our disposal. This couldn’t have worked out better if I’d planned it.
Vivienne: Yet we can hardly rely upon the whims of providence to give us all our victories. This defeat may have turned to our advantage, but it will not last long. [22]

22 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: Our enemy advances, Inquisitor. We must not sit idly by. Act first, and teach them to fear us.

Vivienne (low/neutral approval): You can become the leader the faithful require, but you must do it soon.
Vivienne (med/high approval): I think you know what needs to be done, my dear.

Scene ends.

Here Lies the Abyss

Positively Envious

The PC speaks to Vivienne at Skyhold.
(Only available if Vivienne was not in the party at Adamant.)

Vivienne: You walked physically through the Fade? Please tell me what you remember.

Dialogue options:

  • General: It wasn’t the first time. [1]
  • General: I’d prefer not to. [2]
  • General: I saw the Divine. My past. [3]
  • General: It was fascinating. [4]
  • General: It was horrible. [5]

1 - General: It wasn’t the first time.
PC: I was physically in the Fade at the Temple of Sacred Ashes.
Vivienne: Darling, you didn’t remember anything. Questioning you would have hardly been productive. [6]

2 - General: I’d prefer not to.
PC: I’m trying to put the whole experience behind me. [6]

3 - General: I saw the Divine. My past.
PC: I had… visions. Echoes of what happened to me the first time. The Divine was there, or something like her.
Vivienne: Manifestations of your own mind, perhaps? Or external memories awakened by your presence. I suppose there’s no way to tell. [6]

4 - General: It was fascinating.
PC (mage): In all the times I’ve been to the Fade, I’ve never seen it react so strongly to my presence.
PC (non-mage): I’ve heard stories about the dangers of the Fade, but I’ve never actually seen them before. [6]

5 - General: It was horrible.
PC: We were chased though the dark by a swarm of demons.
Vivienne (mage PC): Do you think the number of demons was a result of the domain you were in, or were they drawn in by your physical presence?
Vivienne (non-mage PC): What classification of demons? What sort of domain? I don’t suppose you’d know that, would you? Pity. [6]

6 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: No one else has physically entered the Fade since the magisters assaulted the Golden City. I’m positively envious right now.

Scene ends.

Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts

Ruler of Orlais

Vivienne: You were very skilled in arranging matters at the Winter Palace, my dear. We will hope Briala can keep what’s been given to her.

Vivienne: You acquitted yourself well enough in the Game, my dear, and now you have the gratitude of an empire. Well done.

Vivienne: You did well enough at the Winter Palace, my dear. It’s not every day an emperor owes you his life.

Vivienne: It took a great deal of skill to win that title for the elves, but you surely know it will end in a bloodbath.

Considering the Divine

After both HLtA and WEWH

Vivienne: My dear, I know you must have a great deal on your mind right now, but I need to speak with you. You know as well as I how far the Inquisition’s influence has spread… and how desperate the grand clerics have become. Our opinion will be instrumental in their election of the new Divine.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I suspected as much. [1]
  • General: It will? That’s unlikely. [2]
  • General: Any advice on the subject? [3]
  • General: One of our own may be Divine. [4]

1 - General: I suspected as much.
PC: I thought that might be coming after the Grand Ball. [5]

2 - General: It will? That’s unlikely. PC: You think the grand clerics will care what the Inquisition wants? Vivienne: They pray for the Maker’s guidance, and see you standing as a beacon. [5]

3 - General: Any advice on the subject? PC: What do you suggest? [5]

4 - General: One of our own may be Divine. PC: They want Leliana and Cassandra as candidates. [5]

5 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: The Inquisition may not be invited to their vote, but our actions will certainly influence the grand clerics. To sit on the Sunburst Throne, a candidate should have grace, charm, and a will of solid steel. Cassandra may lack the first two, but unless you can think of someone better, she is the strongest choice.

6 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: What platform do you support? [7]
  • Investigate: Where else can we look? [8]
  • General: I agree. [9] +Vivienne approves Divine: Cassandra +1
  • General: What about Leliana? [10] -Vivienne disapproves Divine: Leliana +1
  • General: You’d make a good Divine. [11] +Vivienne greatly approves. Divine: Vivienne +1
  • General: This needs some thought. [12]

7 - Investigate: What platform do you support? PC: What would your ideal Divine do with her power? Vivienne: The most important thing, of course, is the restoration of the Circles and the Templar Order. The institutions that have protected Thedas for ages must be rebuilt and the malcontents utterly crushed. We cannot allow anarchists to threaten the lives of the innocent. After we have restored sanity to the world, there will be time to address voices of dissent. [back to 6]

8 - Investigate: Where else can we look? PC: Where can we find candidates outside of the Chantry? There must be someone other than Leliana or Cassandra. Vivienne: The Chantry is already desperate. They would not look to unordained women if they had any choice. You may have better luck searching the halls of the Imperial Court. There are many women serving the empire who have the necessary presence and acumen. [back to 6]

9 - General: I agree. PC: I think Cassandra would be best for the job. Vivienne: Cassandra is our only hope for restoring order after all this chaos. I knew you would see it as I do. We will have to be very mindful of everything we do and say, for the Conclave certainly is doing the same. If they look to the Inquisition to provide a sign of the Maker’s will, we will have to give them the right one. Scene ends.

10 - General: What about Leliana? PC: Leliana might be a better choice than Cassandra, don’t you think? Vivienne: Leliana is a well-meaning fool. She will do irreparable harm to countless people in the name of “freedom.” She proposes to abolish the Circles with nothing but a solemn promise from mages not to murder children. When an angry mage lashes out inside a tower, villages aren’t destroyed! The Circle protects us all! Mages will die and take ordinary men with them in a war that cannot be won. Consider carefully, Inquisitor. Everything we do is a sign from the Maker to those who seek one. Scene ends.

11 - General: You’d make a good Divine. PC: Actually, I think you fit the criteria perfectly, Vivienne. Vivienne: Me? My dear Inquisitor, Thedas will never accept a mage as Divine.

Dialogue options:

  • Politics: I’ll make sure they do. [13] +Vivienne approves
  • General: You can win them over. [14]
  • General: Think about the possibilities. [15]
  • General: They will with my support. [16]

13 - Politics: I’ll make sure they do. PC: A few words to the right people, and we can ensure no one objects to you taking the Sunburst Throne. Vivienne: You do have a point, and a modicum of talent for the Game… If the clerics could be persuaded to consider me–and it’s not impossible–I could hardly refuse, now could I? [17]

14 - General: You can win them over. PC: If you can charm the Imperial Court, you can win over the common folk. Vivienne: You do have a point, and I suppose there is no better way to restore order than to do it myself. If the clerics could be persuaded to consider me–and it’s not impossible–I could hardly refuse, now could I? [17]

15 - General: Think about the possibilities. PC: Picture it! Your political skill and charisma, with the support of Andraste’s Herald backing you. Vivienne: You do have a point, and I suppose there is no better way to restore order than to do it myself. If the clerics could be persuaded to consider me–and it’s not impossible–I could hardly refuse, now could I? [17]

16 - General: They will with my support. PC: With Andraste’s Herald supporting you, what can they do? Vivienne: You do have a point, and I suppose there is no better way to restore order than to do it myself. If the clerics could be persuaded to consider me–and it’s not impossible–I could hardly refuse, now could I? [17]

17 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: We will have to be very mindful of everything we do and say, for the Conclave certainly is doing the same. If they look to the Inquisition to provide a sign of the Maker’s will, we will have to give them the right one. Scene ends.

12 - General: This needs some thought. PC: I’ll have to think carefully about this. Vivienne (high approval): Don’t worry, my dear. I have complete confidence that you will guide the clerics in the right direction. Vivienne (low/neutral approval): Well, don’t fret my dear. With guidance, you’ll steer the clerics in the proper direction. Vivienne: We will have to be very mindful of everything we do and say, for the Conclave certainly is doing the same. If they look to the Inquisition to provide a sign of the Maker’s will, we will have to give them the right one. Scene ends.

What Pride Had Wrought

A Momentous Day

Vivienne: It’s been quite the momentous day, hasn’t it, my dear?

  • Morrigan drank [1]
  • PC drank [2]

1 - Morrigan drank

Vivienne: We should probably give some though to the very likely possibility that Morrigan will use her new power against us.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I trust Morrigan. [3] -Vivienne disapproves
  • General: I expect as much. [4] +Vivienne approves
  • General: Give me options. [5] +Vivienne slightly approves

3 - General: I trust Morrigan. PC: I have complete confidence in Morrigan. Vivienne: My dear, even if she wished to remain loyal, what will the Well’s power do to her mind? She’s bound to some ancient demon.

4 - General: I expect as much. PC: I don’t think it’s likely. I think it’s a certainty. Vivienne: We will need to prepare ourselves… if we can.

5 - General: Give me options. PC: What’s our plan if she does?

6 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: Circle records have limited information on shapeshifting. There are records of counter-spells that may prevent mages from transforming or from reverting to their true forms. I have these people researching these spells now. If they have ever been documented, I’ll find them. [11]

2 - PC Drank

Vivienne: How do you feel? It’s not every say one absorbs ancient elven magic.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I’m getting used to it. [7] +Vivienne slightly approves
  • General: A little worried. [8] +Vivienne approves
  • General: Not so good. [9]
  • General: I feel great. [10]

7 - General: I’m getting used to it. PC: It was strange at first, but I think I’m all right now. Vivienne: Good! We can’t have you falling to pieces on the eve of such an important battle. [11]

8 - General: A little worried. PC: Actually, between the voices and the binding oath to a possibly demonic power, I’m a bit concerned. Vivienne: Wise of you, Inquisitor. We cannot guess at what the lasting effects of the Well might be. The Circle had little information about elven magic to begin with. Perhaps I’ll speak to Dorian. [11]

9 - General: Not so good. PC: I’ve been dizzy for hours, and every now and then I still hear to voices. Vivienne: You may be experiencing mana imbalance. Vivienne (mage PC):As you know, anything that alters your capacity to draw on Fade energy has damaging effects on the body. Vivienne (non-mage PC): For mages, anything that increases your capacity for magic, such as lyrium, has a damaging effect on the body. Vivienne: This would be the most extreme case I’ve ever seen. It will take time to recover. [11]

10 - General: I feel great. PC: I’ve never felt better. I feel ready to take on Corypheus. Vivienne: Glad to hear it, my dear. No doubt there will be side effects later, but one thing at a time. [11]

11 - Scene continues.

Vivienne: The pieces are nearly in place. We’ll soon strike against Corypheus directly.

(Vivienne’s final line is variant based on PC approval before she is given wyvern heart.)

Vivienne (high approval, given real wyvern heart): You’ve done well. I will be proud to fight alongside you when the time comes. Vivienne (neutral/low approval, given real wyvern heart): You’ve done so much better than I expected. I shall not be embarrassed to stand beside you when the time comes. Vivienne (neutral/low approval, given fake wyvern heart): You may be a match for our enemy. I look forward to seeing how this battle plays out. Vivienne (high approval, given fake wyvern heart): I suggest you stop dawdling and take the fight to him as soon as possible. Vivienne (did not complete personal quest): The world hinges upon your actions, my dear. It remains to see how this will end.

Scene ends.

Post-game

Choice dependent dialogue:

  • Leliana Divine [1]
  • Cassandra Divine [2]
  • Vivienne Divine [3]

1 - Leliana Divine Vivienne: The Conclave made an interesting choice in Leliana. Inspired by something, no doubt. I would find the proceedings entertaining, were it not going to create a mess I’ll have to clean up. Scene ends.

690afc2e-201a-432c-b51a-33d60c5c01c7

2 - Cassandra Divine Vivienne: Cassandra is not settling into her new role with any grace, but that’s hardly a surprise. She’ll perform admirably as Divine, I have no doubt. Scene ends.

3 - Vivienne Divine Vivienne (high approval): I’m dreadfully busy preparing for my coronation, but I always have time for you, my dear. Vivienne (neutral/low approval): I’m afraid I’m already swamped, darling. Coronation to prepare for, you know. Is this important?

Dialogue options:

  • General: Just wanted to chat. [4]
  • General: Enjoying the new title? [5]
  • General: It’s important. [6]

4 - General: Just wanted to chat. PC: It’s not important, I just wanted to see how you were. Vivienne (high approval): Aren’t you sweet? I’m quite well, as you can see. And once the ceremony is over, I shall be even better. Vivienne (neutral/low approval): How kind. I’m very busy, as you can see, and will remain so for some time. [7]

5 - General: Enjoying the new title? PC: Enjoying yourself, I gather? Being the Divine-elect suits you. Vivienne: I suspect that being Divine will suit me far better. I shall be glad when the ceremony is done. [7]

6 - General: It’s important. PC: We have business to discuss. Vivienne: Indeed? What manner of business concerns you? [7]

7 - Dialogue options

  • I need your help. (Vivienne will rejoin the party.) [8]
  • Never mind. (Vivienne will not rejoin the party.) [9]

8 - I need your help. PC: I could use your help again dealing with some Inquisition matters. Vivienne (high approval): Of course, my dear. For you? Anything. Vivienne (neutral/low approval): Very well. I suppose I owe the Inquisition some measure of my time. [10]

9 - Never mind. PC: I’ll leave you to your preparations. Thank you, my dear. We’ll speak some other time. [10]

10 - Scene ends.
