Finding items if Blackwall is was not in the party: PC: I think Blackwall would’ve liked to have been here for this.

Turning in items: Blackwall: Heard you found something that had to do with Wardens? Would’ve liked to have seen it.

Speaking to Blackwall after any item is found:

  • Negative approval [1]
  • Positive approval [2]

1 - Negative approval Blackwall: I’m surprised you took the time to investigate the ruins I mentioned. I assumed you and I had nothing in common. I might’ve been wrong.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Give me a chance. [3]
  • General: Assumptions, you say? [4]
  • General: I’m not here to make friends. [5]

3 - General: Give me a chance. PC: You barely know me. Don’t assume we can’t be friends just yet. Blackwall: (Chuckles.) Best not judge by appearances, I suppose. [6]

4 - General: Assumptions, you say? PC: Now I’m curious. What sort of assumptions were you making about me? Blackwall: I thought you cared only about yourself. [6]

5 - General: I’m not here to make friends. PC: The world’s in chaos. Making friends is the least of my worries. Blackwall: Making friends? You misunderstand. [6]

6 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: You lead this Inquisition. You have the power to change the world, improve lives. And yet, you can’t seem to care about the people you hurt along the way.

Dialogue options:

  • General: You’re wrong. [7] +Blackwall approves
  • General: And you’re better? [8]
  • General: We have bigger problems. [9] -Blackwall slightly disapproves

7 - General: You’re wrong. PC: I guess I’ll have to prove you wrong. Blackwall: I welcome it. Scene ends.

8 - General: And you’re better? PC: You talk, but what have you done? Blackwall: I’ve tried to do good by others. Scene ends.

9 - General: We have bigger problems. PC: The sky is torn. There are bigger things to worry about. Blackwall: All you’re doing, Inquisitor, is proving me right. Scene ends.

2 - Positive approval Blackwall: I’ve been meaning to thank you. There are a hundred things that need your attention. You didn’t have to take the time to help me, and yet you did.

Dialogue options:

  • General: It was a good cause. [10] +Blackwall approves
  • General: It was on the way. [11]
  • General: It helps our cause. [12] +Blackwall slightly approves

10 - General: It was a good cause. PC: If the history you pursue benefits the Wardens, then it was worth it. Blackwall: You’ve proven yourself to be an honorable woman. Principled. I’ve great admiration for you, and I’ve never been more certain in my decision to join you. Blackwall: I’ve never been more certain of my decision to join you. [13]

11 - General: It was on the way. PC: Don’t mention it. We happened to be in the area. Blackwall: And here I thought we were having a special bonding moment. But I’ve seen enough of this Inquisition to believe that we do good work. [13]

12 - General: It helps our cause. PC: The Inquisition must do many things to gain support. Blackwall: Of course you would have considered every angle, every advantage. You are a formidable woman, my lady. I hope never to cross you. Perhaps it’s safer to show admiration from afar. Blackwall: I’ve never been more certain of my decision to join you. [13]

13 - Scene continues.

Dialogue options:

  • General: We will do better. [14] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: I’m just hiding the bad. [15]
  • General: I don’t care what you think. [16]
  • General (female PC): I’m glad. [17]
  • Flirt: Admiration? [18]

14 - General: We will do better. PC: There will be opportunities for us to do even more in the future. Blackwall: Then I look forward to it. Scene ends.

15 - General: I’m just hiding the bad. PC: Leliana makes sure my sordid secrets never come to light. Blackwall: Well, then. I won’t pry. I prefer to go on believing only good things about you. Scene ends.

16 - General: I don’t care what you think. PC: I do not seek your approval. Blackwall: You have it, regardless. Scene ends.

17 - General: I’m glad. PC: That’s good to hear. I do not wish to disappoint. Blackwall: You could never disappoint me. Scene ends.

18 - Flirt: Admiration? PC: I would never have guessed that you admire me. Blackwall: Of course I do. You have the world at your feet, myself included.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I don’t want to be worshipped. [19] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: And if the world hated me? [20]
  • General: Good. Stay there. [21] +Blackwall slightly approves

19 - General: I don’t want to be worshipped. PC: I don’t deserve that sort of reverence. Blackwall: Modest, too! Your list of qualities continues to grow. [22]

20 - General: And if the world hated me? PC: So you take your cue from everyone else? What if they despised me? Blackwall: If that were to happen, I would reject the world for lacking in good taste. And perhaps we would continue as we are, us against them. [22]

21 - General: Good. Stay there. PC: At my feet? I could get used to having you there. Blackwall: You are the Herald of Andraste. Any man would be honored to kneel before you. [22]

22 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: Now, we should return to our duties before I get too carried away.

Scene ends.

Low Approval

Investigate: What’s Wrong With You

The PC speaks to Blackwall if they have negative approval and are not romancing him.

PC: You seem to have a problem with me.

If imprisoned: Blackwall: You know I serve you and the Inquisition. You command me as you wish. But we aren’t friends—we never will be—and I believe your time is better spent elsewhere. Blackwall (previously romanced): I can’t believe I was once so enamored with you.

If freed or given to the Wardens: Blackwall: I’ll always be grateful for everything you’ve done for me, but I don’t think we’ll ever really get on as friends. Now that that’s out in the open, lets just get on with our work. There are more things at stake here than my personal opinions of you. Blackwall (previously romanced): I can’t believe I was once so enamored with you.

Pre-Revelations: Blackwall: I don’t like you. It’s as simple as that. Now that that’s out in the open, lets just get on with our work. There are more things at stake here than my personal opinions of you. Blackwall (previously romanced): I can’t believe I was once so enamored with you.

Cutscene: Are You Proud

The PC walks up to Blackwall, who is hacking away at a training dummy.

Choice dependent dialogue:*

  • Non-romance [1]
  • Romanced [2]

1 - Non-romance Blackwall: Are you proud of yourself, of what you’ve built here? How about the lives you’ve destroyed along the way? Given much thought to those lately?

Blackwall (if Celene died): Celene, the one monarch who could’ve stabilized Orlais, and you went against her.

Blackwall (if Wardens exiled): The Wardens at Adamant, banished when they could have helped you.

Blackwall: Is this Inquisition all you wanted it to be? Because I’m disappointed. All I see is a gang of thugs led by a self-serving tyrant.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Is that what you think? [3]
  • General: Do go on. [4]
  • General (post-Revelations): Must feel familiar. [5]
  • General (post-Revelations, imprisoned): You’re one of those thugs. [6]
  • General (not imprisoned): If you don’t like it, leave. [7]

3 - General: Is that what you think? PC: This is what you truly think of my Inquisition? Blackwall: You expected me to see things differently? Perhaps I would think your actions were noble? Let’s just say we’re both disappointed, and leave it there. [8]

4 - General: Do go on. PC: Why don’t you tell me how you really feel. Blackwall: (Snorts.) Of course. I shouldn’t have expected you to take this seriously. What’s done is done. Further talk will accomplish nothing. [8]

5 - General: Must feel familiar. PC: You’ve been both a thug and a self-serving tyrant. I would’ve thought you’d approve. [8]

6 - General: You’re one of those thugs. PC: You belong to the Inquisition, like it or not. [8]

7 - General: If you don’t like it, leave. PC: If the Inquisition doesn’t live up to your lofty expectations, I can have one of my thugs show you the gate. Blackwall: Don’t trouble yourself. I know where it is. Blackwall leaves the Inquisition.

8 - Scene continues.

Blackwall (pre-Revelations): I do not control your course, nor the Inquisition’s. Only my own. So do as you wish. I will not be a party to this any longer. Blackwall leaves the Inquisition.

Blackwall (post-Revelations, freed or given to Wardens): I was those things. You know I’m not proud of it. I do not control your course, nor the Inquisition’s. Only my own. So do as you wish. I will not be a party to this any longer. Blackwall leaves the Inquisition.

Blackwall (post-Revelations, imprisoned): I don’t have the right to demand change, not leave, but others do. Take care you don’t offend them. Scene ends.

2 - Romanced Blackwall: This can’t continue. There was a time when I couldn’t stay away from you. That’s changed.

Choice dependent dialogue:

  • Post-Revelations [9]
  • Pre-Revelations [10]

9 - Post-Revelations Blackwall: I’m just not sure about any of this anymore.

Blackwall (freed): After all I’ve done to free myself from the past and to make up for it, I can’t… [18]

Blackwall (given to Wardens): I will stay to finish the fight with Corypheus, but I cannot stay close while you walk this path.

Dialogue options:

General: Don’t give up. [11] General: Just like that? [12] General: Just say it. [13]

11 - General: Don’t give up. PC: It doesn’t have to be this way. We can salvage this. Blackwall: No, not this time. Blackwall: We’re done. [14]

12 - General: Just like that? PC: So you and I are finished? It’s all work from now on? Blackwall: I can always count on you to cut to the heart of it. Yes. [14]

13 - General: Just say it. PC: Speak plainly. Blackwall: We’re done. [14]

14 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: I’m sorry, for what it’s worth. Scene ends.

10 - Pre-Revelations Blackwall: I shouldn’t have let it drag on for this long.

Dialogue options:

  • General: I tried to make it work. [15]
  • General: I should have expected this. [16]
  • General: So be it. [17]

15 - General: I tried to make it work. PC: I did my best. I’m sorry to disappoint you. Blackwall: I know. I know you tried. I can’t remain a part of this Inquisition. Your actions, the things you’ve been doing? They terrify me.

16 - General: I should have expected this. PC: How did I not see this coming? I tried my best, you know. Blackwall: I know. I know you tried. I can’t remain a part of this Inquisition. Your actions, the things you’ve been doing? They terrify me.

17 - General: So be it. PC: If this is how it has to be. Blackwall: This is how it has to be. I can’t remain a part of this Inquisition. Your actions, the things you’ve been doing? They terrify me.

18 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: I can’t let you lead me down this path, and I can’t watch you take it.

Dialogue options:

  • General: We can fix this. [19]
  • General: What about the Inquisition? [20]
  • General: Then go. [21]

19 - General: We can fix this. PC: No. We’ll think of something. We’ll fix it. Blackwall: Some things cannot be fixed. [22]

20 - General: What about the Inquisition? PC: So you’re leaving me and the Inquisition? We need you. Blackwall: Call me selfish. Call me cowardly, if you wish. Hit me if it makes you feel better. [22]

21 - General: Then go. PC: Fine, do as you wish. I no longer care. [22]

22 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: I’m sorry, for what it’s worth.

Blackwall leaves the Inquisition.

High Approval

Cutscene: Who You Follow

The PC approaches Blackwall at the stables, where he’s working on a small rocking horse/griffon.

Blackwall: This? This is just… it’s something to keep the hands busy.

Race dependent dialogue:

  • Dwarf PC [1]
  • Non-dwarf PC [2]

1 - Dwarf PC Blackwall: You were quite the outlaw, I hear. The Carta. You must have some past.

3 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: How do you know? [4]
  • General: I didn’t have a choice. [5]
  • General: It wasn’t my fault. [6]
  • General: My past isn’t your concern. [7]
  • General (after investigate): Yes I have a past. [7]
  • Flirt: Don’t think less of me. [8]

4 - Investigate: How do you know? PC: Who told you that? Blackwall: No one had to tell me. It’s amazing the things you learn, waiting for someone to crack a keg. Or while sparring. Or just walking past the barracks. The men do enjoy their idle talk. [13]

5 - General: I didn’t have a choice. PC: It was the only way to survive for someone like me. Blackwall: I’m not judging. I know what it’s like to be so desperate. I don’t care who you were. I know who you are now, and that’s the person I signed on for. [13]

6 - General: It wasn’t my fault. PC: Whatever you heard, I didn’t do it. Blackwall: So you didn’t kill an Antivan count with a wheel of cheese Shame. I was hoping that rumor was true. I don’t care who you were. I know who you are now, and that’s the person I signed on for. [13]

7 - General: My past isn’t your concern. PC: So I have a past. I don’t see how it’s your business. Blackwall: You’re right. I was prying. I don’t care who you were. I know who you are now, and that’s the person I signed on for. [13]

8 - Flirt: Don’t think less of me. PC: Tell me you don’t think less of me for it. Blackwall: I don’t. Whoever you were doesn’t matter to me, and it shouldn’t matter to you. The woman I see now is a remarkable person. I’m honored to be here. [13]

2 - Non-dwarf PC Blackwall: I’m grateful you tracked me down when you did. As exciting as wandering the woodlands was, this is better. It’s good to be part of something so important, something that could change things.

Dialogue options:

  • Flirt: It’s only about the work? [9]
  • General: I’m glad. [10] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: What about the Wardens? [11]
  • General: So we have your loyalty? [12]

9 - Flirt: It’s only about the work? PC: I hope there’s more than just the work keeping you here. Blackwall: Well, there’s you, of course. The Inquisition is nothing without its Herald. [13]

10 - General: I’m glad. PC: I’m pleased that you feel that way. Blackwall: Makes me sound like a Chantry sister, doesn’t it? Some giddy new initiate. But so be it. I suppose you’ve earned my loyalty… and girlish enthusiasm. [13]

11 - General: What about the Wardens? PC: The Grey Wardens are huge and important. You’re part of that. Blackwall: True. But without a Blight on the horizon, everything the Wardens do feels like… waiting. This, the Inquisition, is what matters now. And I’m grateful to be a part of it. [13]

12 - General: So we have your loyalty? PC: Does this mean we have your full support? Blackwall: If that’s what’s important to you, then yes. You’ve earned my loyalty. [13]

13 - Scene continues.

Blackwall drops his tools and walks to the fire.

Blackwall: “You are who you choose to follow.” Someone told me that once. Took me years to understand what he meant.

Dialogue options:

  • General: Wise words. [14] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: Isn’t it obvious? [15] -Blackwall slightly disapproves
  • General: Why follow at all? [16] -Blackwall slightly disapproves

14 - General: Wise words. PC: There’s wisdom in that.

15 - General: Isn’t it obvious? PC: Certainly, who you follow defines who you are. It’s not that complicated. Blackwall: We’re not all blessed with your quick wit. Personally, I’m glad I have any wit at all.

16 - General: Why follow at all? PC: And some of us choose not to follow at all. Blackwall: We can’t all be born leaders.

17 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: It was a chevalier who said those words to me. A powerful man, but never without honor. A true knight. We met as competitors in the Grand Tourney. He left me with that advice before we parted. Put aside his own ambitions to help me win the melee. I don’t think I ever thanked him.

18 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: Grand Tourney? [19]
  • Investigate: What happened? [20]
  • General: A generous act. [21]
  • General: Why’d he help you? [22]
  • General: You couldn’t win on your own? [23] -Blackwall slightly disapproves

19 - Investigate: Grand Tourney? PC: What is this Grand Tourney? Blackwall: You’ve never heard of it? The Grand Tourney of the Free Marches? It’s a spectacle. Song, dance, wine. Every amusement you can imagine. But the greatest part is the contest of arms. Prove yourself in the Grand Tourney, and you can make your fortune. [back to 18]

20 - Investigate: What happened? PC: How did he help you? Blackwall: There were a hundred men on the field. Each one fighting for himself. The knight and I had forged an alliance. It was just the two of us, and we took all comers. The goal? Down as many opponents as possible. He always let me deliver the final blow. [back to 18]

21 - General: A generous act. PC: That was generous of him. Blackwall: He said I stood to gain everything… while he’d lose nothing. [24]

22 - General: Why’d he help you? PC: He must have wanted something from you to help like that. Blackwall: A pupil. A squire. Someone to teach and to mold. He saw my potential. [24]

23 - General: You couldn’t win on your own? PC: So without his help, you would’ve lost. Blackwall: Without a doubt. I was young, I had strength and enthusiasm but no experience. [24]

24 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: When it was over, he offered to mentor me, to teach me to become a chevalier like him. And I, young and stupid, turned him down flat. I’d just won the melee at the Grand Tourney. I didn’t need him.

He walks back towards the PC.

Choice dependent dialogue:

  • Romanced [25]
  • Not Romanced [26]

25 - Romanced Blackwall: My life would’ve been very different if I’d followed him. I regret that. But now I believe I made the right decision after all.

Dialogue options:

  • General: What changed? [27] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • Flirt: Because of me? [28] +Blackwall slightly approves
  • General: Self-doubt is dangerous. [29] +Blackwall slightly approves

27 - General: What changed? PC: What changed your mind? Blackwall: You did. [30]

28 - Flirt: Because of me? PC: If your life had been different, we wouldn’t have met? Blackwall: Nothing escapes your notice. [30]

29 - General: Self-doubt is dangerous. PC: It’s best not to second-guess yourself. Blackwall: No. It’s this Inquisition. It’s you. [30]

30 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: Our paths may never have crossed if I’d gone with the old chevalier. I could never regret this life, not with you in it.

Scene ends.

26 - Not Romanced Blackwall: I should’ve gone with him. Perhaps things could’ve been different.

Dialogue options:

  • General: It all turned out. [31]
  • General: Not necessarily better. [32]
  • General: Regret is useless. [33] -Blackwall slightly disapproves

31 - General: It all turned out. PC: You’re here now. A Grey Warden. It worked out. Blackwall: I suppose it did, didn’t it? [34]

32 - General: Not necessarily better. PC: Different doesn’t always mean better. Blackwall: (Chuckles.) In this case, I think it would’ve been better. [34]

33 - General: Regret is useless. PC: Don’t waste your time on regret. Blackwall: Regret has its uses. It comes from reflection, and stops you from making the same mistakes twice. [34]

34 - Scene continues.

Blackwall: But I’m older, hopefully wiser, and I think I’ve chosen the right person to walk with.

Scene ends.
