Catching Up With Dorian

The PC finds Dorian with some of the companions.

Varric: As the most eloquent dwarf you know, Sparkles—

Sera: Speech! Speech! Way too much speech.

Cole (Sera not recruited): He doesn’t really know any other dwarves.

Dorian: Varric, there’s really no need…

The PC approaches.

PC: What’s going on?

Varric: Inquisitor! You’re just in time. Sparkles, the Imperium doesn’t deserve you. Or want you. It may even kill you. But we’ll miss you, if it counts.

The PC frowns and looks at Dorian.

Varric: Aaaand you didn’t know. Okay, folks! Time to take the party elsewhere.

Iron Bull recruited Iron Bull: (Snores.) Tama never wanted any, I swear… Varric: Errr, leave him.

Dorian begins to walk, and the PC follows.

Dorian went back to Tevinter Dorian: It’s true. When the Exalted Council has ended, I’m going back to Tevinter… for good, this time.

Dorian stayed with the Inquisition Dorian: It’s true. I couldn’t stay away from Tevinter forever. I’m leaving as soon as the Exalted Council is done.

Dialogue options:

  • Pleased: I understand. [1]
  • Sad (romanced, Dorian stayed): But you said you’d stay. [2]
  • Sad (Dorian went back to Tevinter): I’ll miss you. [3]
  • Angry (romanced): You weren’t going to tell me? [4]
  • Angry (not romanced): Why didn’t you tell me? [5]
  • Stoic: I see. [6]

1 - Pleased: I understand. PC: Tevinter needs someone like you. [7]

2 - Sad: But you said you’d stay. PC: You said you weren’t going back. What’s changed? Dorian: I don’t want to leave, amatus. [7]

3 - Sad: I’ll miss you. PC: You know I’ll miss you.

Dorian (romanced): I don’t want to leave, amatus. [7] Dorian (not romanced): Naturally. [7]

4 - Angry: You weren’t going to tell me? PC: But you weren’t going to tell me that, or discuss it with me first. Dorian: I didn’t want you to find out like this. Frankly, I’ve been… dreading this conversation, but here it is. [7]

5 - Angry: Why didn’t you tell me? PC: You were going to sneak away? Without even a goodbye? Dorian: I was going to tell you. Not like this. The party was Varric’s idea. [7]

6 - Stoic: I see. PC: Ah. I see. Dorian: I didn’t want you to find out like this. Frankly, I’ve been… dreading this conversation, but here it is. Dorian: I was going to tell you. Not like this. The party was Varric’s idea. [7]

7 - Scene continues.

Dorian: My father is dead. Assassinated, I believe. I received notice this morning: a perversely cheerful letter congratulating me on assuming his seat in the Magisterium. This “ambassadorship”… his doing, I’m told. He must have wanted me away when the trouble began.

Dorian reconciled with his father Dorian: We only met a few times while I was home. He didn’t say anything about keeping me as his heir. This “ambassadorship”… his doing, I’m told. He must have wanted me away when the trouble began.

Dorian did not reconcile with his father Dorian: I haven’t seen him since Redcliffe. I had no idea he would keep me as his heir, or why. This “ambassadorship” was his doing. Whether to support me or his legacy, I’ll never know.

Did not complete Dorian’s personal quest Dorian: I didn’t even see him when I was home. I had no idea he would leave me everything. This “ambassadorship”… his doing, I’m told. He must have wanted me away when the trouble began.

Dorian: I have to go back.

8 - Dialogue options:

  • Special (Dorian in relationship with Iron Bull): What about Iron Bull? [9]
  • Special (romanced): What about us? [10]
  • Special (Dorian reconciled with his father): I’m sorry about your father. [11]
  • Investigate: What will you do in Tevinter? [12]
  • Investigate: I could help you. [13]
  • General: You don’t have to do anything. [14]
  • General: There’s nothing to say. [15]
  • General: I wish you well. [16]

9 - Special: What about Iron Bull? PC: How does Bull feel about this? Dorian: He wants to come with me. It can’t happen, of course. A Qunari cannot simply walk around the Imperium, even in a magister’s company. I don’t want him hurt. He doesn’t want me hurt. We’re working it out. [back to 8]

10 - Special: What about us? PC: What of us? This is it, then? Dorian: Nonsense. There will always be an “us.” We’ll just be… farther apart, for a time. The PC gives him a sad look Dorian: Now, now, don’t pout. They’ll put that expression on a statue, and then you’ll be sorry. PC: You think this is funny? Dorian: Nothing about this is funny. I am sorry, for what it’s worth. [back to 8]

11 - Special: I’m sorry about your father. PC: I know it was complicated, but… I’m sorry about your father. Dorian: Thank you. It still doesn’t feel real. [back to 8]

12 - Investigate: What will you do in Tevinter? PC: So you’ll truly be a magister? Dorian: Oh, yes. I can’t wait to degrade the Magisterium with my presence! A new outfit is required. PC: And then what? Dorian: I find my father’s killers and kill them back. Then I find those giving Tevinter a bad name and kill them. They’re most likely the same people, so that should make the job easier. [back to 8]

13 - Investigate: I could help you. PC: You’ll need help. I could go with you.

Dorian (romanced): Not this time, amatus. Dorian (not romanced): Not this time, my friend.

Dorian: I won’t be entirely without support. Maevaris has gathered other magisters who feel as we do. We’ll be an actual faction in the Magisterium. I’ll teach them manners. Take them shopping. It’ll be fun! [back to 8]

14 - General: You don’t have to do anything. PC: You don’t have to go back, Dorian. You put it behind you. You still could. Dorian: Give up a golden opportunity for martyrdom? Perish the thought! [17]

15 - General: There’s nothing to say. PC: I guess there’s nothing more to say. Dorian: There is one thing. [17]

16 - General: I wish you well. PC: I wish you safe travels, and the best of luck. Dorian: Oh, I’ll need it, thank you. Magisters are tricksy bastards. [17]

17 - Scene continues.

Dorian hands the PC something.

Dorian: A present. A going-away present. It’s a sending crystal. Amazing what friendship with the Inquisition gives you access to. If I get in over my head, or you’re overwhelmed with sorrow for lack of my velvety voice—magic! What—you didn’t think I would just leave and you’d never hear from me again, did you?

Not romanced Dorian: You are my dearest friend, perhaps my only friend. That will never change, no matter where we are. Now let’s finish the good wine before the others get back. Scene ends.

Romanced Dorian: You are the man I love, amatus. Nothing will truly keep us apart. They kiss. Dorian: Now let’s finish the good wine before the others get back. Scene ends.

Prompted Conversation

Dorian: Quite the party, wasn’t it? I hear it left the Orlesians and Fereldans completely aghast. Andraste’s Herald—the Inquisitor—toasting a Tevinter magister? Not a bad scandal to leave on.

PC married Sera A married woman! My, my, isn’t that something? I should call Sera “Mrs. Inquisitor” from now on. Maybe teach her to crochet. She’ll love that!

After returning from the Deep Roads Dorian: This time of year, it’ll be difficult to find a caravan to go all the way back home. Maybe a sea voyage? I could get captured by burly Qunari pirates! That would be fun.

Dorian left the Inquisition/did not join the Inquisition Dorian: I’ll wager you never thought to see me again, hm? PC: Not particularly. Dorian: Funny how things work out. (Laughs.) The South is still a freezing shithole, I see.

Dorian stayed with the Inquisition Dorian: I’m moving up in the world. “Tevinter Ambassador”… fancy! Sad that it doesn’t come with a stipend, or at least a decorative pin.

Dorian encouraged to go back to Tevinter Dorian: I can’t believe it’s been so long. PC: Around two years.

Not romanced Dorian: That’s it? Two years? Sweet merciful Maker, it felt like ten. That could have been all the wine. Only thing back home I really missed.

Romanced Dorian: Too long, amatus. Did you miss me?

  • General: Every day. [1]
  • General: A little. [2]
  • General: You could have warned me. [3]

1 - General: Every day. PC: I couldn’t stand that you were gone. Dorian: Tsk. Such a soft heart for an Inquisitor. [4]

2 - General: A little. PC: Oh, a little bit. Dorian: “A little bit,” he says. I’ll show you a little bit. Just you wait. [4]

3 - General: You could have warned me. PC: Some warning would have been nice. Dorian: What—so you could hide away your new lovers? Perish the thought. [4]

Dorian (romanced): Always wonderful to see you, amatus. Dorian (high approval): Good to see you, my friend. Dorian (neutral/low approval): Greetings again, Inquisitor.

4 - Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: You’ve been gone a long time. [5]
  • Investigate: How are things with Iron Bull? [6]
  • Investigate: So you’re… an ambassador? [7]
  • Investigate: Any thoughts on the council? [8]
  • General: Farewell. [9]

5 - Investigate: You’ve been gone a long time. PC: What did you do in Tevinter while you were away?

Dorian (reconciled with his father): I went home… twice. Father was only there once. Mother was drunk both times. Dorian (did not reconcile with his father): I’ll tell you what I didn’t do: see Father even once. Mother tracked me down once, which was… nice.

Dorian: I also went to Qarinus, to see my good friend Maevaris. Then I settled some of Alexius’s affairs. That wasn’t fun. [back to 4]

6 - Investigate: How are things with Iron Bull? PC: Things are going well with the Bull, I take it?

Dorian (encouraged to leave): Honestly, I things would have cooled by now. He’s a persistent bastard. Dorian (encouraged to stay): He’s happy I’ve returned, if that’s what you mean. Nearly crushed three of my ribs with that ridiculous hug.

PC: You say that as if you didn’t like it. Dorian: For such a great beast, he’s a terrible sap. “I want to talk about my feelings, Dorian.” Ugh. PC: You do like it! Dorian: Quiet, you. He’ll overhear, and then where will I be? [back to 4]

7 - Investigate: So you’re… an ambassador? PC: What is this ambassadorship about, exactly?

??? (did not complete personal quest?) Dorian (encouraged to stay): Who can say? I was informed of my status by letter, not even offered a choice. Rather rude actually.

??? (did not complete personal quest?) Dorian (encouraged to leave): You tell me. I didn’t ask for it—one day I was minding my own business in the capital, the next? Here I am.

Dorian: I believe my father set it up, but… the Imperium certainly didn’t object. They’d love for the Inquisition to fall apart, so they’re happy if it seems they consider this council a waste of time. PC: That… makes no sense. Dorian: No? If dread Tevinter actually pushed for the Inquisition’s end, everyone else would disagree on principle. So they send a nobody pariah and hope for the best. Makes perfect sense to me. [back to 4]

8 - Investigate: Any thoughts on the council? PC: Any thoughts about the Exalted Council? Dorian: A few. Divine Victoria needs a new tailor, for one.

Cassandra Divine Dorian: Cassandra in a flowy dress just seems wrong. And that hat does her no favors.

Leliana Divine Dorian: From the paintings of Leliana in that enormous robe, you’d think she was pregnant. Could cause a delicious scandal.

Vivienne Divine Dorian: Vivienne always loved her ludicrous hats, but even she can’t pull off that Chantry monstrosity.

Dorian: As for this whole Exalted Council business, well… I warned you once that no one would thank you for saving the world. Sadly, I’m always right. So long as the Inquisition’s around to remind them they’re not really in charge, they’ll never sleep comfortably. Whether they have the guts to take action? I suppose we’ll see. [back to 4]

9 - General: Farewell. PC: Another time. Dorian: I look forward to it.
