Let’s Discuss Templars
PC: I’d like to talk with you about templars.
First time asking Cole: They’re heavy with forgotten songs, like Varric. Some of them are too loud. It’s hard to stay near them. Cullen is softer, but demons asked questions that hurt him. Evangeline was kinder. I want to explain, but I… Rhys’s mother spoke to spirits but not to him. Then she died for a templar he loved. Words just bounce off the edges.
If asked before Cole: What do you want to know?
1 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: What do you think of them? [2]
- Investigate: Explain how templars feel. [3]
- Investigate: What about red templars? [4]
- General: Goodbye. [5]
2 - Investigate: What do you think of them? PC: What’s your general opinion of templars? Cole: Some like hurting mages. It makes them happy, or less afraid, or… Dreams again, woke up shaking. Stalking the grounds for one who looks like her. Always some rule being broken. But not all templars listen when whispers crawl around inside them. They try to protect people. Like Cullen. The good ones remember that mages are people. [back to 1]
3 - Investigate: Explain how templars feel. PC: Can you tell me more about how the templars feel to you? Cole: They feel older than they look. They’ve been changed, and their bodies are incomplete now. The lyrium helps, but their bodies always want to connect to… something older. Bigger than they are. That’s why they block magic. They reach for that other thing, and magic has no room to come in.
Cole (dwarf PC): Varric feels like that. So do you, except your mark pulls you up. Cole (non-dwarf PC): Like when I listen to Varric. [back to 1]
4 - Investigate: What about red templars? PC: Can you tell me more about how the red templars are different? Cole: The red lyrium is different, darker. Daggers under the skin. It eats you inside, until you’re nothing. They hear a different song. The song behind the door old whispers want opened. They are dead and dark and done. [back to 1]
5 - General: Goodbye. PC: I’ll talk to you later.
Let’s Discuss the Inquisition
PC: I’d like to talk with you about the Inquisition.
Cole: I don’t understand it. People talk like it’s a person, but it’s not even a thing. A dagger can be a way to let the pain out, but even if it isn’t, it’s still a dagger. The “Inquisition” isn’t real unless it has something real to make it. It’s like a spirit.
Scene ends.
Tell Me About Your Past
PC: I’d like to talk about what happened to you before we met.
Low approval Cole: No.
First time asking Cole: Before you, Rhys was my friend. He showed me I was wrong to kill the mages. I thought I was helping them. Then he and Evangeline went to Adamant, and I went with them. I was worried Evangeline would hurt Rhys. We found out dangerous things. It scared Seeker Lambert, and he scared the mages. It started the rebellion. Seeker Lambert told me what I was. Rhys couldn’t look at me. I ran until I found more templars. That’s all.
If asked before Cole: What do you want to know?
1 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: You were at the rebellion? [2]
- Investigate: Rhys was your friend? [3]
- Investigate: You killed mages? [4]
- Investigate: You went to Adamant? [5]
- Investigate: Tell me of Seeker Lambert. [6]
- General: Goodbye. [7]
2 - Investigate: You were at the rebellion? PC: What was the Spire like when the mage rebellion started? Cole: Dead and dying, begging and bloody. Some wanted freedom, some peace, some war. Some wanted it all to stop. Evangeline was a templar, but she helped Rhys help the others. She set them free. Adrian was a mage, but she killed mages to force the fight. She wanted blood. Rhys just wanted to help, to stop people hurting. Maybe that’s why he saw me. [back to 1]
3 - Investigate: Rhys was your friend? PC: What can you tell me about Rhys? Cole: He was a mage. He saw me when most couldn’t, and he remembered. He helped me, and I watched over him. I worried Evangeline would hurt him. She was a templar. But she didn’t like hurting people. When I left, she stayed. Now she watches over him. They should have been born together, but instead they were bound by light. They should have been with the rebels. Maybe they ran away together instead. Neither of them like killing.
Dialogue options:
- Special: I could find them. [8]
- [Back to 1]
8 - Special: I could find them. PC: If you like, I could use the resources of the Inquisition to locate your friend. Cole: No. If they are alive and safe, they should stay away. The last time he saw me, he didn’t want to look at me. He saw a monster. Let him forget. Unlocks “Locate Rhys and Evangeline” Quest [back to 1]
4 - Investigate: You killed mages? PC: What did you mean when you said you killed mages? Cole: Some of the mages at the Spire wanted to die. Too sad, too scared, too much. I didn’t know what I was. A ghost, I thought. Fading in the Fade. When I came to them, they could see me. I used the knife to set them free. When Rhys found out, he made me stop, made me understand. There were other ways to help. I didn’t know.
Dialogue options:
- General: You made a mistake. [9] +Cole slightly approves
- General: You’re a murderer. [10] +Cole slightly approves
- General: You set them free. [11] -Cole disapproves
9 - General: You made a mistake. PC: It sounds like you didn’t know what you were doing. Cole: No. I killed people. I knew. I just thought I had to. They were hurting, helpless, haunted… it was all I could do. [12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 10 - General: You’re a murderer. PC: You murdered helpless mages, and that’s all you have to say? Cole: Yes. I didn’t know, and I stopped when I did, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t do it. [12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 11 - General: You set them free. PC: You wanted to free them from pain and fear. You shouldn’t be ashamed of that. Cole: I am. I didn’t know. I could have helped more, if I’d known, if I hadn’t been so… me. [12] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 12 - Scene continues. ㅤㅤ ㅤ Cole: It was wrong. I was wrong. If I start again, you or Cassandra or Cullen need to kill me. [back to 1]
5 - Investigate: You went to Adamant? PC: What can you tell me about Adamant fortress? Cole: It is old, full of sadness and pain. It should be torn down.
Before HLTA Cole: The Veil is thin. We found a demon there. It had touched a man and made him real again. It scared Rhys and Evangeline. The man wasn’t supposed to be real. Then the demon found us. It put me back in the cupboard on the bad day. Rhys and Evangeline saved me. [back to 1]
Post-HLTA, Cole in party Cole: It was different this time. More Wardens, more demons. Less Fade, but the Fade was worse. I hope I never see it again. [back to 1]
Post-HLTA, Cole not in party Cole: Thank you for not making me go. [back to 1]
6 - Investigate: Tell me of Seeker Lambert. PC: You said Seeker Lambert told you what you were? Cole: I’m hiding Rhys from him, but he chants words and sees. I won’t let you hurt Rhys. My nose explodes, a shower of blood. “Just another parasite that’s wormed its way into our world, feeding off all the things you can’t have.” What we found at Adamant made him angry. We were the first rock rolling at the top of a mountain. He had to stop us. He killed so many, he didn’t care… cold, corrupt. So I came and killed him.
Dialogue options:
- Special: Why go to the Seeker fortress? [13]
- [Back to 1]
13 - Special: Why go to the Seeker fortress? PC: If you hated Seeker Lambert, why go to the Seeker fortress? Cole: Because he was right. I was a demon. I saw demons at Adamant. They put people in the dark, in the old hurts. I didn’t want to be that. I heard the old songs of the templars at Val Royeaux and followed them. If I forgot, fought, fell to felling, templars would kill the demon. I wouldn’t hurt anyone again. [back to 1]
7 - General: Goodbye. PC: I’ll talk to you later.
You’ve Done Odd Things
The PC overhears strange conversations around Skyhold.
Bread Cook: When I find out who’s been throwing fresh bread up on the battlements, there’ll be consequences, mark my words. Strange, yesterday, I thought I saw someone taking a loaf, but I… I can’t quite recall.
Healer: That soldier I told you about? He’s still hanging on. It’s a miracle, after what he went through. Every morning, he looks at the battlements and says, “I’m not going to die until winter comes.”
Cheese Servant: First a full wheel of Antivan smoked cheese, and now three royals’ worth of crushed mint? They were right here. I remember seeing someone take them! I just… I can’t recall their face.
Cook: The funniest thing I’ve seen in years. (Laughs.) That cat dancing around, hoping an pouncing like a fool. Made my day bright, it did. Maker knows what got into the little rat-catcher.
Servant: It wasn’t so bad today. The cook was in a jolly mood. She didn’t shout at all, even when I dropped the ladle.
Daggers Soldier: Strangest thing. When I reached down, my dagger was gone. Just Gone. Know where I found it? In a barrel. The thing was filled to the brim with daggers. I’ve got the strangest feeling. I know someone took it right off my belt, but… I can’t recall who.
Servant: The soldiers make me nervous. Sitting around here, tempers get short. There’s even fighting. I saw one soldier reach for his belt, like he was going to draw a dagger on the man he was arguing with. It was lucky he’d lost his dagger, or there’d’ve been more than a bloody nose.
Plums Servant: Someone left sliced plums on the windowsill again. The juice is attracting flies. There are spiders everywhere. The plums were right in front of me, but… I can’t quite recall who took them.
Healer: The spiderwebs help stop the bleeding, and they prevent the wounds from getting infected. Gather as many as you can. Strangest thing though. I can’t remember where I head that. I think I remember… a young man?
Turnips Servant: Someone emptied a whole bag of turnips into the fire! Maker, the smell is everywhere! I was going to use them for dinner, and then… I can’t remember who took them.
Soldier: Stephen finally died. It was a blessing really. He’s been in so much pain since Haven. He went out of his mind at the end. He smiled, said he smelled his mother’s turnip stew, and slipped away.
The PC talks to Cole in the alcove above the tavern.
- PC: I’ve heard about some oddities here in the keep. Was that you? Cole: Yes. Maybe. What was it?
- PC: The servants are having trouble remembering some odd events.

- Special: Which amuses the cook. [12] +Cole slightly approves
- [Back to 1]
12 - Special: Which amuses the cook. PC: Then the cook laughs at the cats instead of yelling at the scullery maids. Cole: Kitchen fires are hot, like when Haven burned. The old cook lies under rocks. His head is in pieces. She needs to make it all work, so nothing will burn again. But if she laughs, she forgets for a while. [back to 1]
4 - General: You’re hoarding daggers? PC: Someone found a barrel full of misplaced daggers. Was that you? Cole: They were safer there.
Dialogue options:
- Special: You’re stopping fights. [13] +Cole slightly approves

Dialogue options:
- Special: They smell like turnip stew. [15] +Cole slightly approves
- [Back to 1]

7 - General: [Ask something else.] PC: Let’s talk about something else. Cole: All right.
8 - General: Stop these activities. PC: Stop causing trouble around Skyhold. You’re upsetting people. I don’t want to hear about it again. Cole: You won’t. Ends conversation.
9 - General: Goodbye. PC: I’ll talk to you later.
After all other dialogue has been exhausted Cole: So many voices hurting, needs no one meets, tiny chances to make them better. You understand.

17 - General: Keep it up. PC: I appreciate what you’re doing, Cole. Cole: Too many to ever be done, a sea of tears. But everyone gets a chance. Scene ends.

3 - General: I’m sorry. PC: I apologize, Cole. It wasn’t my intention to make you uncomfortable. [6]
4 - General: Whoops? PC: Cole, I didn’t realize that using this type of magic was like hurting your… relatives? [6]
