A Mysterious Contact

Rook heads to the Cantori Diamond where Teia, Viago, Jacobus, and Ivenci are all talking.

Completed A Slow PoisonDid not complete A Slow Poison
Jacobus: Rook stopped the Antaam! (Coughing) Took down their qamek maker! [They] did your job for you. [They’re] a hero.

Governor Ivenci: Just a meddling busybody. Where was Rook when the dragon attacked our city?
Jacobus: You’ve let the Antaam do whatever they want! They used qamek on civilians! (Coughing) On your own people!

Governor Ivenci: And how, precisely, would you have suggested I stop them?

Teia: Call on the Crows? Ask for our help?

Governor Ivenci: So you can murder a few Antaam here and there? Giving them an excuse to retaliate against even more citizens? We have enough trouble already. Or have you forgotten the blight?

Rook heads towards the gathering.

Jacobus: I can’t believe you’re defending them!

Viago: I’m not defending anyone, Jacobus.

Jacobus: You’re letting them be part of this? My cousin died because the governor didn’t stop the Antaam from—

Saved MinrathousSaved Treviso
Jacobus: From… (Pained noise) From taking over.

Teia: Jacobus?

Jacobus: I’m fine. But I’m not going to be part of this.
Teia: Jacobus.

Jacobus: No. I’m not going to stand around and listen to this. I’ll see you later.

Jacobus leaves as Rook approaches.

Governor Ivenci: Well. Now that that unpleasantness is dealt with… about your mysterious informant.

Viago: Whoever they are, they know the Antaam. And Treviso.

Rook: Your message made it sound like this informant also knows where the gods are staging their ritual.

Governor Ivenci: Treviso does not need this troublemaker. This should be left to proper officials.

Viago: It very much concerns Rook. We have a contact who offers access to the Butcher and “privileged information” on the gods.

Teia: A chance to find your gods and to free the city. A prize for both our causes.

Origin dependent dialogue:
Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: I’m a Crow. Both concern me.

Rook: We need both. If we’re strong, we can stand against anyone.

Viago: Someone else seems to think so. The contact knows the city and the Antaam.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Irreverent: That’s a lot in one day.

Rook: You don’t expect much, do you.

Viago: Hopefully it is that simple. Our contact knows the city and Antaam, but we don’t know them.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Tough: Can we trust the contact?

Rook: The contact—they aren’t one of us? Can we trust them?

Viago: It isn’t a Crow, but they know the city and the Antaam.

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to origin choice.

Governor Ivenci: How do you know it’s for real?

Viago: They gave us patrol patterns. Dreadnought arrivals. Their information is real.

Governor Ivenci: And you didn’t share this with me?

Saved MinrathousSaved Treviso
Teia: People in this city continue to sicken and die! Do you not have other more pressing matters to attend to?

Rook: So where are we meeting?

Teia: Near the field hospital. Where the market used to be.

Rook: And they asked for me. Not you or Viago.

Teia: Even with what happened to Treviso, your fight against the gods is spoken of by many. You have respect. And no small admiration.

Viago: From who, though? That’s the question.
Teia: The bookkeepers can bookkeep when the meeting is done.

Rook: When and where do we meet?

Teia: They’ll be in the market.

Rook: And they asked for me. Not you or Viago.

Teia: You helped this city, and you’re helping all of Thedas. You’ve earned respect.

Viago: We just… don’t know from whom.
Dialogue options:

5 - Investigate: Any leads on our traitor?

Rook: What about the human help the Antaam was getting? You have any leads on that?

Teia: We continue what you started. The other Talons are turning over every stone.

Governor Ivenci: You trust them? Not even your First Talon is safe from your infighting.

Viago: We are all Antivan Crows.

Governor Ivenci: And yet those of us sworn to Treviso are beneath you.

Return to dialogue tree.

6 - Investigate: What if it’s a trap?

Rook: Hypothetically, what if I’m walking into an ambush?

Viago: I would prepare for one.

Teia: Not everything is an adder in the wardrobe.

Viago: I said to prepare. I didn’t say not to go.

Return to dialogue tree.

7 - Investigate: No idea who the contact is?

Rook: There’s really no clue who it is?

Governor Ivenci: They’re foolish enough to think Crows are reliable. That’s a clue about their worth.

Teia: They promise help.

Governor Ivenci: So do you. When you’re not killing each other. Treviso deserves better.

Rook: It’s getting the best.

Governor Ivenci: That has yet to be proven.

Return to dialogue tree.

8 - I’ll go meet this contact.

Rook: I’ll talk with this mystery contact.

Governor Ivenci: And the rest of us will hope not to get caught in your crossfire. Again.

Scene continues. [9]

Teia: If we can remove the Butcher and weaken the Antaam? Then perhaps Treviso can start to heal from the blight. With luck, this informant is our key to that. Find them, Rook. Hear what they have to say.Teia: We fight for everyone. And a chance to strike at the gods and the Antaam? It’s worth the risk. Good luck, Rook. See what this mysterious informant can give us.

The Jewel of Antiva

Saved MinrathousSaved Treviso
Teia: Our informant is near the field hospital, Rook.

Viago: They said you’d know them on sight.

Governor Ivenci: Remember, there are injured people there. Don’t damage anything.
Teia: The meeting is in the market, Rook.

Viago: They implied you can’t miss them.

Governor Ivenci: Try not to damage anything.

Rook starts to leave the Diamond.

  • Bellara: You know, I’m no expert, but “unknown contact” always means “trap” in the serials.
  • Davrin: An unknown contact. This has to be a trap.
  • Emmrich: Could our unknown contact be a secret snare?
  • Harding: An unknown contact? Doesn’t this feel like a trap?
  • Lucanis: Unknown contact. This is a trap.
  • Neve: An unknown contact. Sounds like a trap.
  • Taash: So we’re supposed to meet this unknown contact? Feels like a trap.
Antivan CrowNon-Antivan Crow
Rook: Bold to try to trap a Crow fighting the gods. I’m at least curious.Rook: We’re fighting gods with the Crows. I’m curious who would try to trap us.

Rook: If our informant actually knows where the Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are performing their next ritual, it’s worth the risk.

They enter the market.

Rook: Okay, Viago and Teia said our informant is somewhere in the market. Let’s find them. I just hope their supposed information about the gods’ location is actually true.

Rook heads into the meeting point, where they are stopped by the Antaam. Another Qunari behind them stands.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: Rook, I presume?

Rook: The Butcher!

“Butcher” Daarthrata: Tsk. There’s no need for that. Treviso is the trap, not this meeting.

The Antaam step aside, and The Butcher gestures for Rook to sit.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: Please.

Rook walks up to the table.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: So tense. I promise, I’ll signal when it’s time to fight.

They sit.

Rook: Strange way to ambush someone.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: (Chuckles) I don’t have to “ambush” anyone. You think I couldn’t just march on the Crows? Scattered Antaam flock to me. I have the soldiers to raze your casino and every inch of this city.

Rook: But I’ll bet there’s no profit in actually winning.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: Hmm. There’s money being made by the occupation, but not by me. I said Treviso was the trap, and I meant it. The jewel of Antiva… she sings even while caged. Such purity in every stone. It’s trapped my heart. I love this city.

Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: Then why hurt it?

Rook: You have a strange way of showing your affection.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: I conquered it. I didn’t betray it. Not like the cattle born here.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Irreverent: Good. Then leave.

Rook: Everyone loves Treviso. Doesn’t mean you get to conquer it.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: That explains why the streets crawl with undeserving cattle.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Tough: I don’t believe you.

Rook: You expect me to believe the Butcher of Treviso?

“Butcher” Daarthrata: I butcher lying cattle. They don’t deserve what they have.

Scene continues. [4]

“Butcher” Daarthrata: You know there are traitors here. They ransom their own city. Literal gods stalk the land, but these filth worship their own purses! But you… you’re different.

”Butcher” Daarthrata: You Crows stay true to your roles.”Butcher” Daarthrata: You and the Crows stay true to your roles.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: It means something when you die, and even more when you kill. You’re as much a work of art as this city. And you want a secret from me.

Dialogue options:
  • Affable: Help me protect Treviso.
Rook: If you really do love this city, you’ll tell me where the gods are holding their ritual.

  • Tough: Are you allied with the gods?
Rook: You’re not an “end of the world” type. Are you with the gods or not?

  • Angry: You arranged this meeting?
Rook: You knew I was coming. Cut to the chase and tell me where the gods want their ritual.
    + Davrin Approves

“Butcher” Daarthrata: (Grumbles) The gods! (Laughs) They give strength. But all they ask in return is everything.

He starts to change.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: I can feel their corruption. I can hear their whispers. They’re calling for a ritual. If I give in, I’ll know where you’ll need to go. But I will lose my jewel. My city.

He slams the table and stands.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: So! (Short pained grunt) You live in a casino! Let us make a game of this! I will become what the gods want, welcome their whispers!

He throws the table, knocking Rook aside.

Rook: Ah!

“Butcher” Daarthrata: Meet me, and show me if the Crows deserve my city!

He leaves Rook to fight the Antaam.

Rook: The Butcher was our contact! And he’s… letting himself fall to the blight? Finish them off! We need to go after the Butcher!

They defeat the Antaam and head back into the city.

Antivan CrowNon-Antivan Crow
Rook: So the Butcher wants me to prove I’m Crow enough to be worthy of Treviso? That’s what’s happening?Rook: So the Butcher wants us to prove we’re worthy of saving Treviso? That’s what’s happening?
  • Bellara: Sure picked a funny way to do it!
  • Davrin: And he’s surrendered to the gods’ corruption.
  • Emmrich: And he’s let the gods’ corruption take him!
  • Harding: By giving in to the gods’ corruption?
  • Lucanis: By turning himself into a monster.
  • Neve: He’s given in to the gods’ corruption.
  • Taash: I thought he was giving in to whatever the gods were doing!

They re-enter the market.

Rook: Everyone’s acting like normal. Like the Butcher hasn’t gone nuts.

  • Bellara: Who’d believe it? I don’t!
  • Davrin: Who’s going to believe that? I don’t.
  • Emmrich: Who’d dare confront him?
  • Harding: Maybe it’s safer to pretend he’s fine.
  • Lucanis: Who would believe it?
  • Neve: So they don’t know. Or it’s easier to play along.
  • Taash: They’re Antaam. They don’t ask questions.

Rook: Safer to keep your head down, I guess.

They continue.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: Come, Rook! I wait among the Drowned!

They head towards the Drowned District.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: The gods gnaw at my mind! I see what you need! Prove you deserve it!

Rook: Hear the shift in his voice? He’s changing!

“Butcher” Daarthrata: My city, my Treviso! I will not abandon you to the traitors who gave you to me!

They reach the Drowned District, and spot a monster in the distance fighting the Antaam.

Rook: There’s the Butcher! He’s a reaver—and fighting his own Antaam!

  • Bellara: How’s that thing going to tell us about the gods?
  • Davrin: That thing’s a monster. How can it tell us anything about the gods?
  • Emmrich: I very much doubt that whatever he’s become can tell us the gods’ plans.
  • Harding: How are we going to get information about the gods from that?
  • Lucanis: That thing cannot answer questions.
  • Neve: I don’t think he can tell us about the gods.
  • Taash: How’s he gonna tell us what the gods are doing? He barely has a face!

Rook: We have to hope he’s still in there.

They head towards the combat.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: I see you, Rook! And I see the ritual! Match me! Fight me! Win this city!

Rook joins the fight.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: This is the power the gods give!

Rook: Butcher! Where is the ritual?

“Butcher” Daarthrata: So beautiful, but not like Treviso!

They continue fighting.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: I… know ritual! You save jewel!

Rook: There’s nothing left of him!

the Butcher reaches low health.

“Butcher” Daarthrata: I see Tearstone Island! The ritual! Tearstone Island!

They defeat The Butcher.

Traitor

Rook: He’s gone. And he named the ritual site. Tearstone Island.

  • Bellara: Actually kind of surprised the Butcher didn’t lie.
  • Davrin: The Butcher didn’t lie. If that’s worth anything.
  • Emmrich: The Butcher kept his promise to us, in the end.
  • Harding: At least the Butcher wasn’t lying.
  • Lucanis: The Butcher kept his word.
  • Neve: The Butcher didn’t lie. For whatever that’s worth.
  • Taash: Huh. An Antaam who kept his word. Guess Treviso really rubbed off on him.
Dialogue options:
  • Affable: That was the trade he wanted.
Rook: He got the death he wanted. Good trade, I guess. And he gave us the information we came for.

  • Irreverent: Low bar to clear.
Rook: Yeah, he’s a prince among men. Least he gave us what we came for, though.

  • Tough: He was a monster.
Rook: If I could have killed him without giving him what he wanted, I would have.

Governor Ivenci appears on a nearby building, along with some of the Antaam.

Governor Ivenci: Yes. Truly, the Butcher was a paragon of honor and virtue, and we are all devastated to see him go.

Rook: Ivenci.

Governor Ivenci: And now you have a location for your final, pointless confrontation. The gods are at Tearstone Island. Isn’t that what you wanted? A chance to die a hero’s death? So go. Leave Treviso to those who deserve it.

Saved Minrathous
Governor Ivenci: What’s left of it, anyways.
Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: Now’s your chance to confess.

Rook: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us, governor?

Governor Ivenci: Oh, please. Just say what you’re thinking.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Irreverent: Of course. You’re the traitor.

Rook: The Butcher did warn us about a traitor. Didn’t get a chance to name them, though. Thanks for confirming that for us, Ivenci.

Governor Ivenci: Given how much that man talked, I’m shocked he actually kept his mouth shut.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Angry: You traitorous coward!

Rook: You gutless traitor! You weren’t powerless against the Butcher, you were working with him!

Governor Ivenci: I don’t expect you to understand this, but sometimes governance means not showing your entire hand.

You let us suffer and sicken in favor of Minrathous!

Governor Ivenci: I gave up the Crows. You gave up the whole city. Treviso is dying, Rook. And its killer wears your face.

Dialogue options:

8 - Antivan Crow: I agonized over that choice.

Rook: When I made that choice… I didn’t do it lightly. I couldn’t imagine how bad it was going to get… how much my city was about to suffer. But next to the Venatori seizing control of Minrathous? Handing the gods all of Tevinter? I live with the consequences of my choices, Governor. Can you say the same?

Governor Ivenci: You live with nothing, Rook! You have the luxury of distraction, of defining all your actions by the “greater good.” So take your team to Tearstone Island. Face Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain, strike them down. Or don’t. Either way, Treviso is dying. But it’s still mine. Leave its funerary rites to one who cared enough about this city to make themselves its villain.

Viago: The governor betrayed us all. And for what? A city that is sick. And whose recovery will be measured in years.Viago: The other officials of course know nothing.

Teia: Of course. I’m surprised they even remember the governor’s name.

Rook walks up.

Rook: I take it you heard? The Butcher’s dead.

Teia: And in his place is the traitor we knew was lurking. And the Antaam fell in line?

Rook: Whatever the Antaam are looking for, Ivenci’s giving it to them.

Viago: The blight changes things. Even the Antaam fear it.

Rook: Ivenci is apparently playing the role they want.

Viago: The Governor has given them a clear purpose. They were more cunning than I thought.

Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: I wish we’d seen through them.

Rook: If only we’d figured out it was Ivenci before all this started.

Teia: I wish the same. But regret does neither of us good.

Viago: We knew someone had delivered Treviso to the Butcher. You brought us their name.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Irreverent: I admit it: they outplayed us.

Rook: The lectures, the insults. Ivenci made sure all we saw was a hopped-up bureaucrat who was jealous that Treviso loves the Crows.

Rook: And because everyone knows we Crows rule Antiva, we missed who actually does.Rook: If someone told me Ivenci was in charge of the Antaam, I wouldn’t have believed it. And yet…

Viago: Yes. But you have forced them into the open.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Tough: I knew they were fishy.

Rook: Something always bothered me about Ivenci.

Teia: Many things bothered me about Ivenci. Yet I did not spot the most important one.

Viago: This wasn’t a failure. You gave us the name we needed.

Return to previous tree.

Teia: “The hand that leashed Treviso.” The Butcher was the mouth, but the hand was Ivenci all along. They think they have power in the Antaam, and a network doing their will.

Viago: But we have the face of our enemy.

Teia: Ivenci will be in hiding, so we will hound their Antaam and make them desperate.

Viago: When the governor show themselves again… we end this.

Dialogue options:

5 - Investigate: What’s Ivenci’s larger goal?

Rook: Ivenci keeps talking about restoring order and rebuilding Treviso. But what then?

Teia: I believe the good governor’s plan was to risk the city to try and claim the nation. If the Antaam beheaded the Crows, who would merchant princes hire? Who would invaders fear?

Viago: As if the Antaam would fill that role. This was a bookkeeper’s angry grab at power.

Return to dialogue tree.

6 - Investigate: What is Ivenci planning?

Rook: When Ivenci left, they made it sound like they were planning something.

Viago: I suspect it will be about restoring “order” as they see it. And that the Crows will be first on their list.

Return to dialogue tree.

7 - Investigate: What if they gods attack?

Rook: You’re not concerned the gods will send the Antaam more support?

Teia: The gods might come for us, but they’re coming for everyone. I believe you are crafting the answer to that. And we will help as we can.

Teia: Whatever the good governor’s intent, we’ll end it. We’ll let you know when we’ll make our move. And after that? Treviso will be free.

Rook speaks to Teia and Viago before leaving.

Viago: The Antivan Crows will make a show of this. For Ivenci, and for the world.
