The Beginning
The PC wakes up in the Fade. They stand and look around to see a glowing figure in the distance. As the PC heads towards it, large spiders begin giving chase. The figure reaches a out to the PC, who reaches back. Their hand flashes with green and the screen turns white.
The PC steps out of the breach and collapses in the ruins of the Conclave. Soldiers approach with swords drawn, and the scene fades into them waking up kneeling on a stone floor in manacles, surrounded by four soldiers with swords drawn. The PC’s hand flashes green, and they wince in pain.
PC: (Gasps.)
Cassandra and Leliana walk in.
Cassandra: Tell me why we shouldn’t kill you now. The Conclave is destroyed. Everyone who attended is dead. Except for you.
Dialogue options:
-
General: That’s horrible!
PC: What do you mean everyone’s dead? -
General: You think I did it.
PC: You think I’m responsible -
General: (Remain silent.)
Cassandra: Explain this!
Cassandra grabs the PC’s hand and it flares green.
PC: I can’t.
Cassandra: What do you mean you can’t?
PC: I don’t know what that is, or how it got there.
Cassandra: You’re lying!
She grabs the PC, but Leliana pulls her away.
Leliana: We need [them], Cassandra.
Dialogue options:
-
Angry: Let me go.
PC: Whatever you think I did, I’m innocent. -
Confused: I’m confused.
PC: I don’t understand. -
Stoic: What now?
PC: So what happens now? -
Sad: All those people…
PC: I can’t believe it. All those people… dead.
Leliana: Do you remember what happened? How this began?
PC: I remember running. Things were chasing me, and then… a woman?
Leliana: A woman?
PC: She reached out to me, but then…
Cassandra: Go to the forward camp, Leliana. I will take [them] to the rift.
Leliana leaves.
PC: What did happen?
Cassandra: It will be easier to show you.
Cassandra kneels and unlocks the manacles, but the PC’s wrists are still bound with rope. They stand, and Cassandra leads them outside. The PC looks up at the sky after initially shielding their eyes from the light.
Cassandra: We call it “The Breach.” It’s a massive rift into the world of demons that grows larger with each passing hour. It’s not the only such rift. Just the largest. All were caused by the explosion at the Conclave.
PC: An explosion can do that?
Cassandra: This one did. Unless we act, the Breach my grow until it swallows the world.
The breach flashes, and the PC falls to the ground in pain as the mark flares.
PC: (Screams.)
Cassandra: Each time the Breach expands, your mark spreads… and it is killing you. It may be the key to stopping this, but there isn’t much time.
Dialogue options:
- Investigate: How could it stop this? [1]
- Investigate: You still think I’m guilty? [2]
- General: If I can help, I will. [3]
+ Cassandra Approves - General: Will helping save me? [4]
- General: Do I have a choice? [5]
- Cassandra Disapproves
1 - Investigate: How could it stop this?
PC: You say it may be the key… to doing what?
Cassandra: Closing the Breach. Whether that’s possible is something we shall discover shortly. It is our only chance, however. And yours.
2 - Investigate: You still think I’m guilty?
PC: You still think I did this? To myself?
Cassandra: Not intentionally. Something clearly went wrong.
PC: And if I’m not responsible?
Cassandra: Someone is, and you are our only suspect. You wish to prove your innocence? This is the only way.
3 - General: If I can help, I will.
PC: (Breathes deeply.) I understand.
Cassandra: Then…?
PC: I’ll do what I can. Whatever it takes.
4 - General: Will helping save me?
PC: So if I do what you want, will I live through it?
Cassandra: We have no way of knowing.
5 - General: Do I have a choice?
PC: So I don’t really have a choice about this.
Cassandra: None of us have a choice.
6 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree. They both stand. Cassandra leads the PC through camp, where onlookers glare as they pass.
Cassandra: They have decided your guilt. They need it. The people of Haven mourn our Most Holy, Divine Justinia, head of the Chantry. The conclave was hers. It was a chance for peace between mages and templars. She brought their leaders together. Now they are dead.
Soldiers open gates to allow them through.
Cassandra: We lash out, like the sky. But we must think beyond ourselves, as she did. Until the Breach is sealed.
She stops and turns, drawing a dagger.
Cassandra: There will be a trial. I can promise no more.
She cuts the ropes around the PC’s wrists and walks ahead.
Cassandra: Come. It is not far.
PC: Where are you taking me?
Cassandra: Your mark must be tested on something smaller than the breach.
Drop Your Weapon. Now.
The PC crosses the bridge, passing a Chanter reciting to a group of soldiers, numerous wounded/resting soldiers, and wrapped corpses. They approach a gate manned by two more soldiers.
Cassandra: Open the gate! We are heading into the valley.
There are three spiked barricades, two of which are manned by two soldiers each. They pass by a burning wagon, and more corpses (templar). Three soldiers head towards them.
Soldier: Maker, it’s the end of the world.
As they reach the top of the hill, flashes of green strike the ground. The breach grows again and the PC’s mark flares. They fall to the ground in pain, and Cassandra helps them up.
Cassandra: The pulses are coming faster now. The larger the breach grows, the more rifts appear, the more demons we face.
They continue up the path.
PC: How did I survive the blast?
Cassandra: They said you… stepped out of a rift, then fell unconscious. They say a woman was in the rift behind you. No one knows who she was. Everything farther in the valley was laid waste, including the Temple of Sacred Ashes. I suppose you’ll see soon enough.
The PC and Cassandra cross a second bridge, following a group of soldiers. The bridge is struck by a piece of the breach and collapses, sending the bodies of soldiers flying. The PC and Cassandra tumble to the frozen river below. Another meteor strikes, causing a Shade to appear out of a pool of green light.
Cassandra: Stay behind me!
She charges forward to attack as another shade rises out of the ground in front of the PC, who looks around to find a weapon appropriate for their class. The PC arms themselves and the two defeat the shades.
PC: It’s over.
Cassandra approaches the PC with her sword drawn.
Cassandra: Drop your weapon. Now.
**Dialogue options:
- General: All right. I’ll disarm. [1]
+ Cassandra Approves - General: You need to trust me. [2]
- Cassandra Disapproves - General: I need this weapon! [3]
- Mage: I don’t need a staff. [4]
- Cassandra Slightly Disapproves
1 - General: All right. I’ll disarm.
PC: Alright. Have it your way.
Cassandra: Wait.
2 - General: You need to trust me.
PC: If you’re going to lead me through a demon-infested valley, you’ll have to trust me.
Cassandra: Give me one reason to trust you.
PC: Because my life is on the line.
Cassandra: (Sighs.) You’re right.
3 - General: I need this weapon!
PC: A demon attacked me. What was I supposed to do?
Cassandra: You don’t need to fight.
PC: Are you saying it won’t happen again?
Cassandra: (Sighs.) You’re right.
4 - Mage: I don’t need a staff.
PC: Do you really think I need a staff to be dangerous?
Cassandra: Is that supposed to reassure me?
PC: I haven’t used my magic on you yet.
Cassandra: (Sighs.) You’re right. You don’t need a staff, but you should have one.
5 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Cassandra: I cannot protect you, and I cannot expect you to be defenseless.
Previously chose “If I can help, I will” | Previously chose “Will helping save me?” | Previously chose “Do I have a choice?” |
---|---|---|
Cassandra: I should remember that you agreed to come willingly. | Cassandra: Your life is threatened enough as it is. | Cassandra: I should remember you did not attempt to run. |
Cassandra: Take these potions. Maker knows what we will face.
PC: Where are all your soldiers?
Cassandra: At the forward camp, or fighting. We are on our own, for now.
They crest a small hill, where two shades are spotted on the frozen river below.
Cassandra: There! Watch out! If we flank them, we may gain an advantage.
The shades are defeated, and they continue along the river where another shade appears. A wraith forms above the stone stairs on the left.
Cassandra: Up on the hill! It attacks from a distance!
The PC and Cassandra continue up the steps after defeating both, passing more corpses along the way until they encounter another group of demons.
PC: They’re falling from the Breach!
When the demons are cleared, they go up more stairs on the left, this staircase steeper than the one before.
Cassandra: We’re getting close to the rift. You can hear the fighting.
PC: Who’s fighting?
Cassandra: You’ll see soon. We must help them.
At the top of the stairs to the right, there is a bridge covered in burning wagons and barrels. To the left, there is a short drop down a stone wall. Cassandra and the PC jump down to join Solas, Varric, and two soldiers in fighting demons under a rift.
The First Rift
The group defeats the demons after the PC and Cassandra join in the fighting.
Solas: Quickly, before more come through!
Solas grabs the PC’s hand and hold it up to the rift. The rift closes with a loud cracking sound.
PC: What did you do?
Solas: I did nothing. The credit is yours.
Dialogue options:
-
General: So I can help.
PC: At least this is good for something. -
General: I did that?
PC: I closed that thing? How? -
General: You mean the mark.
PC: You mean this.
Solas: Whatever magic opened the Breach in the sky also placed that mark upon your hand. I theorized the mark might be able to close the rifts that have opened in the Breach’s wake – and it seems I was correct.
Cassandra: Meaning it could also close the Breach itself.
Solas: (To Cassandra) Possibly.
Solas: (To PC) It seems you hold the key to our salvation.
Varric: Good to know! Here I thought we’d be ass-deep in demons forever.
Varric approaches the PC.
Varric: Varric Tethras: rogue, storyteller, and occasionally unwelcome tagalong.
Varric winks at Cassandra. She scowls.
Dialogue options:
- Investigate: You’re with the Chantry? [1]
- General: Pleased to meet you. [2]
- General: Nice crossbow. [3]
- General: What now? [4]
1 - Investigate: You’re with the Chantry?
PC: Are you with the Chantry, or…?
Solas: (Chuckles.) Was that a serious question?
Varric: Technically I’m a prisoner, just like you.
Cassandra: I brought you here to tell your story to the Divine. Clearly that is no longer necessary.
Varric: Yet, here I am. Lucky for you, considering current events.
2 - General: Pleased to meet you.
PC: It’s good to meet you, Varric.
Solas: You may reconsider that stance, in time.
Varric: Aww. I’m sure we’ll become great friends in the valley, Chuckles.
3 - General: Nice crossbow.
PC: That’s… a nice crossbow you have there.
Varric: Ah, isn’t she? Bianca and I have been through a lot together.
PC: You named your crossbow Bianca?
Varric: Of course. And she’ll be great company in the valley.
4 - General: What now?
PC: So, I closed the rift. What now?
Cassandra: Now we go to meet Leliana.
Varric: What a great idea!
5 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Cassandra: Absolutely not. Your help is appreciated, Varric, but…
Varric: Have you been in the valley lately, Seeker? Your soldiers aren’t in control anymore. You need me.
Cassandra: (Disgusted noise.)
Solas: (to PC) My name is Solas, if there are to be introductions. I’m pleased to see you still live.
Varric: He means, ‘I kept that mark from killing you while you slept.‘
Dialogue options:
- Investigate: You know about the mark? [6]
+ Solas Slightly Approves - General: Thank you. [7]
+ Solas Slightly Approves - General: You can do that? [8]
- General: I’m no use if I’m dead. [9]
6 - Investigate: You know about the mark?
PC: You seem to know a great deal about it all.
Mage PC | Non-Mage PC |
---|---|
Cassandra: Like you, Solas is an apostate. | Cassandra: Solas is an apostate, well-versed in such matters. |
Solas: Technically, all mages are now apostates, Cassandra. My travels have allowed me to learn much of the Fade, far beyond the experience of any Circle mage. I came to offer whatever help I can give with the Breach. If it is not closed, we are all doomed regardless of origin.
Dialogue Options:
Return to previous tree.
- General: That’s commendable. [10]
- General: And when this is over? [11]
+ Solas Slightly Approves- General: I’ll do what I can. [12]
- General: I’m trying to survive. [13]
10 - General: That’s commendable.
PC: That’s a commendable attitude.
Solas: Merely a sensible one, although sense seems to be in short supply right now.
11 - General: And when this is over?
PC: And what will you do once this is all over?
Solas: One hopes that those in power will remember who helped, and who did not.
12 - General: I’ll do what I can.
PC: If I can close the Breach, I will.
13 - General: General: I’m trying to survive.
PC: I’m just trying to get through this alive.
7 - General: Thank you.
PC: Then I owe you my thanks.
Solas: Thank me if we manage to close the Breach without killing you in the process.
Scene continues. [14]
8 - General: You can do that?
PC: How did you… do that?
Solas: Healing magic and minor wards, but I fear your mark is now past the point where those can help you.
9 - General: I’m no use if I’m dead.
PC: I can’t close the Breach if I’m dead.
Solas: That is most certainly true.
14 - Scene continues.
Return to previous main tree.Solas: Cassandra, you should know: the magic involved here is unlike any I have ever seen.
Mage PC | Non-Mage PC |
---|---|
Solas: Your prisoner is a mage, but I find it difficult to imagine any mage having such power. | Solas: Your prisoner is no mage. Indeed, I find it difficult to imagine any mage having such power. |
Cassandra: Understood. We must get to the forward camp quickly.
Varric: Well, Bianca’s excited!
Cassandra: This way, down the bank. The road ahead is blocked.
Solas: We must move quickly.
The group begins climbing down the path.
Very Perceptive, Varric
The party leaves the now closed rift. They continue down a steep, narrow path back to the frozen river.
Solas: Demons ahead!
Varric: Glad you brought me now, Seeker?
At the bottom of the path the party fights a handful of demons. To the east is an intact cabin at the top of some stone steps. Farther along the frozen riverbed there is a burning cabin on the west side of the river. At the end of the riverbed there are some stone stairs leading up to a cave with a bonfire. Three demons are huddled around the fire. [I always expected them to do something — they never did]
Race specific dialogue:
Solas: You are Dalish, but clearly away from the rest of your clan. Did they send you here?
PC: What do you know of the Dalish?
Solas: I have wandered many roads in my time, and crossed paths with your people on more than one occasion.
Dialogue options:
- General: They’re your people, too. [1]
- General: “Crossed paths”? [2]
- General: Then you know to be wary. [3]
- [Don’t respond] [4]
1 - General: They’re your people, too.
PC: We are both of the same people, Solas.
Solas: The Dalish I met felt… differently on the subject.
Varric: Can’t you elves just play nice for once?
2 - General: “Crossed paths”?
PC: What do you mean by “crossed paths”?
Solas: I mean that I offered to share knowledge, only to be attacked for no greater reason than their superstition.
Varric: Can’t you elves just play nice for once?
3 - General: Then you know to be wary.
PC: Then you know us well enough to be careful.
Solas: Well enough to be suspicious.
Varric: Can’t you elves just play nice for once?
4 - [Don’t respond.]
Solas: It is silence then. As you wish.
Varric: So, let me guess: Fellow surface dwarf, maybe part of the Carta?
PC: What makes you say that?
Varric: I can tell a proper Orzammar dwarf from twenty paces. Also, you have that shifty-smuggler look to you.
Dialogue options:
- General: Very perceptive. [1]
- General: So do you. [2]
- General: I’m no criminal. [3]
- [Don’t respond] [4]
1 - General: Very perceptive.
PC: You have keen eyes.
Cassandra: And an enormous mouth.
Varric: And clever hands. It’s all part of my charm.
2 - General: So do you.
PC: I’m not the only one with a shifty-smuggler look.
Cassandra: Varric did not destroy the Conclave.
Varric: That you know of. We shifty-smuggler types can be tricky.
3 - General: I’m no criminal.
PC: Are you calling me a criminal?
Cassandra: You are a criminal.
Varric: Now, now—nothing wrong with being a criminal. Keeps the guards in business.
4 - [Don’t respond.]
Varric: I’ll take that as a yes. I’m so pleased.
Varric: So I take it you’re from the Free Marches?
PC: Oh?
Varric: Accent. I’m from Kirkwall, but you’re from… further east, maybe?
Dialogue options:
- General: Very perceptive. [1]
- General: This is a bit strange. [2]
- General: Am I being interrogated? [3]
- [Don’t respond] [4]
1 - General: Very perceptive.
PC: That’s quite the ear you have.
Varric: I’m all kinds of impressive.
Cassandra: (Derisive snort.)
2 - General: This is a bit strange.
PC: You just… listening to me talk feels odd.
Varric: Ansburg? Ostwick? This is going to bother me.
3 - General: Am I being interrogated?
PC: Is this another kind of interrogation?
Varric: Oh, I’m sure Cassandra has done plenty of that.
4 - [Don’t respond.]
Cassandra: There’s no point in asking, Varric.
Varric: We had Qunari in Kirkwall. A whole boatload of them. They were your typical cheerless sort. Then they tried to take over the city and kill everyone. But I’m guessing you don’t actually follow the Qun, do you? You’re Tal-Vashoth.
Dialogue options:
- General: That’s perceptive. [1]
- General: Worried I’ll convert you? [2]
- General: How did you know? [3]
- [Don’t respond] [4]
1 - General: That’s perceptive.
PC: That’s an excellent guess.
Varric: Well, you haven’t recited a single quote from the Prophet Koslun yet. So unless you’re trying to stay on the Seeker’s good side, I’d say that’s pretty telling.
2 - General: Worried I’ll convert you?
PC: Afraid I’ll try to convert you to the Qun?
Varric: Well, you haven’t recited a single quote from the Prophet Koslun yet. So unless you’re trying to stay on the Seeker’s good side, I’d say that’s pretty telling.
3 - General: How did you know?
PC: Surprising you can tell something like that.
Varric: Well, you haven’t recited a single quote from the Prophet Koslun yet. So unless you’re trying to stay on the Seeker’s good side, I’d say that’s pretty telling.
4 - [Don’t respond.]
Varric: Seems you’re as talkative as the rest of your kind, though.
5 - Scene continues.
Return to race selection. The mark on the PC’s hand flares.
PC: (Grunts.) or (Breathes sharply.)
- Cassandra: Hold on. We haven’t much further.
- Cassandra: I know it’s difficult, but we must keep moving.
- Solas: We must hurry, before the mark consumes [them].
- Solas: My magic cannot stop the mark from growing further. For your sake, I suggest we hurry.
- Varric: Shit, are you alright?
- Varric: Are you doing alright?
- Varric: That… didn’t sound good.
The party climbs the wide stone stairs to the north.
Varric: So… are you innocent?
PC: I don’t remember what happened.
Varric: That’ll get you every time. Should have spun a story.
Cassandra: That’s what you would have done.
Varric: It’s more believable, and less prone to result in premature execution.
The party climbs the narrow winding stone stairs, and at the top they encounter more demons.
Cassandra: I hope Leliana made it through all this.
Varric: She’s resourceful, Seeker.
Solas: We will see for ourselves at the forward camp. We’re almost there.
They continue along the path up the hill. Along the way are more corpses and burning wagons. They encounter another fade rift outside a gate.
Cassandra: Another rift!
Solas: We must seal it, quickly!
Soldier: They keep coming! Help us!
The party fights more demons.
Solas: Hurry! Use the mark!
The PC closes the rift.
Cassandra: The rift is gone! Open the gate!
Soldier: Right away, Lady Cassandra!
Solas: We are clear for the moment. Well done.
Varric: Whatever that thing on your hand is, it’s useful.
They go through the gate into the forward camp.
The Forward Camp
The party enters the gates and walk onto a bridge. There are numerous chests scattered around. Soldiers are stationed in various places, and there is one cleric standing aside. Leliana and Chancellor Roderick can be overheard as you approach.
Leliana: We must prepare the soldiers!
Roderick: We will do no such thing.
Leliana: The prisoner must get to the Temple of Sacred Ashes. It is our only chance!
Roderick: You have already caused enough trouble without resorting to this exercise in futility.
Leliana: I have caused trouble?
Roderick: You, Cassandra, the Most Holy—haven’t you all done enough already?
Leliana: You’re not in command here!
Roderick: Enough! I will not have it!
The PC walks up:
Roderick: Ah, here they come.
Leliana: You made it. Chancellor Roderick, this—
Roderick: I know who [they are]. As Grand Chancellor of the Chantry, I hereby order you to take this criminal to Val Royeaux to face execution.
Cassandra: “Order me”? You are a glorified clerk. A bureaucrat!
Roderick: And you are a thug, but a thug who supposedly serves the Chantry!
Leliana: We serve the Most Holy, Chancellor, as you well know.
Roderick: Justinia is dead! We must elect a replacement, and obey her orders on the matter!
Dialogue options:
- General: What about the Breach? [1]
+ Solas Slightly Approves - General: So no one’s in charge here. [2]
- General: I’m standing right here. [3]
1 - General: What about the Breach?
PC: Isn’t closing the Breach the more pressing issue?
Roderick: You brought this on us in the first place!
2 - General: So no one’s in charge here.
PC: So none of you are actually in charge here.
Roderick: You killed everyone who was in charge!
3 - General: I’m standing right here.
PC: Don’t talk about me like I’m not here.
Roderick: You shouldn’t even be here!
4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Roderick: Call a retreat, Seeker. Our position here is hopeless.
Cassandra: We can stop this before it’s too late.
Roderick: How? You won’t survive long enough to reach the temple, even with all your soldiers.
Cassandra: We must get to the temple. It’s the quickest route.
Leliana: But not the safest. Our forces can charge as a distraction while we go through the mountains.
Cassandra: We lost contact with an entire squad on that path. It is too risky.
Roderick: Listen to me. Abandon this now before more lives are lost!
The Breach expands, and so does the mark on the PC’s hand.
Cassandra: (to PC) How do you think we should proceed?
Dialogue options:
- You’re asking for my opinion? [5]
- Take the mountain path. [6]
(Fast but indirect. Soldiers will act as a distraction elsewhere. The problem will be addressed sooner, but there may be casualties)
- Cassandra Slightly Disapproves
+ Varric Approves - Charge with the soldiers. [7]
(Careful sustained assault. Soldiers will stand with you to ensure arrival. Scouts in the pass may be lost.)
+ Cassandra Approves
5 - You’re asking for my opinion?
PC: Now you’re asking me what I think?
Solas: You have the mark.
Cassandra: And you are the one we must keep alive. Since we cannot agree on our own…
6 - Take the mountain path.
PC: Use the mountain path. Work together. You all know what’s at stake.
7 - Charge with the soldiers.
PC: I say we charge. I won’t survive long enough for your trial. Whatever happens, happens now.
8 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Cassandra: Leliana, bring everyone left in the valley. Everyone.
Roderick: On your head be the consequences, Seeker.
Path to the Temple
Choice dependent:
The Mountain Path
The party hikes up a snowy mountain to reach the bottom of a cliff-side series of ladders and platforms. They begin to climb, scaling two ladders, a set of stairs, and one more ladder before entering the mine.
Cassandra: The tunnel should be just ahead. The path to the temple lies just beyond it.
Solas: What manner of tunnel is this? A mine?
Cassandra: Part of an old mining complex. These mountains are full of such paths.
Varric: And your missing soldiers are in there somewhere?
Solas: Along with whatever has detained them.
Cassandra: We shall see soon enough.
Upon entering, a cluster of demons attack. Inside are empty stone hallways and stairs that lead up. They cross a covered bridge over what seems to be a bottomless abyss, and find many abandoned crates, chests, and desks. The party climbs another set of stairs to find more demons and finally leaves the tunnels. There are corpses right outside the door.
Varric: (Sighs.) Guess we found the soldiers.
Cassandra: That cannot be all of them.
Varric: So the others could be holed up ahead?
Solas: Our priority must be the breach. Unless we seal it soon, no one is safe.
Dalish PC | Dwarf PC | Human PC | Qunari PC |
---|---|---|---|
Varric: I’m leaving that to the [person] with the glowing hand. | Varric: I’m leaving that to our elven friend here. | Varric: That’s a task for the other dwarf in out party. | Varric: I’m leaving that to our Qunari friend here. |
They approach a rift that has soldiers already fighting the demons that have appeared.
Soldier: Lady Cassandra!
Cassandra: You’re alive!
Soldier: Just barely!
The rift spawns another wave. The party defeats the demons and the PC closes the rift.
Solas: Sealed, as before. You are becoming quite proficient at this.
Varric: Let’s hope it works on the big one.
Cassandra helps a soldier to her feet.
Soldier: Thank the Maker you finally arrived, Lady Cassandra. I don’t think we could have held out much longer.
Cassandra: Thank our prisoner, Lieutenant. [They] insisted we come this way.
Soldier: The prisoner? Then you…?
Dialogue options:
- General: It was worth the risk. [1]
+ Solas Slightly Approves - General: All in a day’s work. [2]
- General: No time for talk. [3]
1 - General: It was worth the risk.
PC: It was worth saving you, if we could.
Soldier: Then you have my sincere gratitude.
2 - General: All in a day’s work.
PC: Closing rifts and saving soldiers, that’s what I do.
Soldier: Then you have my sincere gratitude.
3 - General: No time for talk.
PC: We have to get to the breach, and quickly.
Soldier: To the breach? I don’t…
4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Cassandra: The was into the valley behind us is clear for the moment. Go, while you still can.
Soldier: At once.
Soldier: (to her troops) Quickly, let’s move!
Solas: The path ahead appears to be clear of demons as well.
Cassandra: Let’s hurry, before that changes. Down the ladder. That’s the way to the temple.
They continue down the path and down two ladders, then follow a steep pathways covered with planks.
Varric: So… Holes in the fade don’t just accidentally happen, right?
Solas: If enough magic is brought to bear, it is possible.
Varric: But there are easier ways to make things explode.
Solas: That is true.
Cassandra: We will consider how this happened once the immediate danger is past.
The party continues down the winding pathway, down some stairs, and approach the ruins of the temple.
Charge with the Soldiers
The party hikes up a path while soldiers run ahead with weapons drawn. There is debris scattered everywhere as they turn up some steps. Soldiers line the path—one running through an archway get hit by a meteor falling from the breach and dies. There is more debris as the party goes through the archway and drops down to aid more soldiers in fighting demons. A rift glows just ahead.
Solas: Be weary—another fade rift!
They fight demons falling from the rift. Another wave spawns.
Varric: How many rifts are there?
Solas: We must seal it if we are to get past!
Cassandra: Quickly then!
They defeat the demons and the PC seals the rift.
Solas: Sealed, as before. You are becoming quite proficient at this.
Varric: Let’s hope it works on the big one.
Cullen approaches the party.
Cullen: Lady Cassandra, you managed to close the rift? Well done.
Cassandra: Do not congratulate me, Commander. This is the prisoner’s doing.
Cullen: Is it? I hope they’re right about you. We’ve lost a lot of people getting you here.
Dialogue Options:
- General: I’ll do what I can. [1]
- General: I hope they’re right, too. [2]
+ Solas Slightly Approves - General: I’m your only hope. [3]
1 - General: I’ll do what I can.
PC: I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try my best.
Cullen: That’s all we ask.
2 - General: I hope they’re right, too.
PC: You’re not the only one hoping that.
Cullen: We’ll see soon enough, won’t we.
3 - General: I’m your only hope.
PC: you’ll lose a lot more unless I get to the breach.
Cullen: Indeed.
4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Cullen: The way to the temple should be clear. Leliana will try to meet you there.
Cassandra: Then we’d best move quickly. Give us time, Commander.
Cullen: Maker watch over you—for all our sakes.
Cullen helps an injured soldier limp away. The party jumps down a ledge towards the temple ruins.
The Temple of Sacred Ashes
The party approaches the ruins.
Solas: The Temple of Sacred Ashes.
Varric: What’s left of it.
Cassandra: That is where you walked out of the Fade and our soldiers found you. They say a woman was in the rift behind you. No one knows who she was.
There are dozens of burning/charred corpses scattered through the ruins. The party descends down into the temple to see the Breach in full, passing more corpses.
Varric: The Breach sure is a long way up.
Leliana approaches from behind with some soldiers.
Leliana: You’re here. Thank the Maker.
Cassandra: Leliana, have your men take up positions around the temple.
Leliana leaves with a nod, and Cassandra walks up to the PC.
Cassandra: This is your chance to end this. Are you ready?
Dialogue Options:
-
General: I’ll try.
PC: I’ll try, but I don’t know if I can reach that, much less close it. -
General: Can I even get up there?
PC: I’m not sure how to even start getting up to that thing. -
General: Just tell me what to do.
PC: I’m assuming you have a plan to get me up there.
Solas: No. This rift was the first, and it is the key. Seal it, and perhaps we seal the Breach.
Cassandra: Then let’s find a way down. And be careful.
Leliana accompanies the party as they make their way around the temple. A voice echoes out from the Breach.
Voice: Now is the hour of our victory. Bring forth the sacrifice.
Cassandra: What are we hearing?
Solas: At a guess: the person who created the Breach.
The group approaches a growth of red lyrium.
Varric: You know this stuff if red lyrium, Seeker.
Cassandra: I see it, Varric.
Varric: But what’s it doing here?
Solas: Magic could have drawn on lyrium beneath the temple, corrupted it…
Varric: It’s evil. Whatever you do, don’t touch it.
The voice continues as they keep walking.
Voice: Keep the sacrifice still.
Justinia’s Voice: Someone help me!
Cassandra: That is Divine Justinia’s voice!
They leap down to the temple floor, and the PC’s mark begins to crackle with power.
Justinia’s Voice: Someone help me!
PC’s Voice: What’s going on here?
Cassandra: That was your voice. Most Holy called out to you. But…
The voices turn into a scene from the Fade.
PC: What’s going on here?
Justinia: Run while you can! Warn them!
Voice: We have an intruder. Kill [them]. Now!
The scene vanishes in a flash.
Cassandra: You were there! Who attacked? And the Divine, is she…? Was this vision true? What are we seeing?
PC: I don’t remember!
Solas: Echoes of what happened here. The fade bleeds into this place.
Cassandra and the PC walk up to him.
Solas: This rift is not sealed, but it is closed… albeit temporarily. I believe that with the mark, the rift can be opened, and then sealed properly and safely. However, opening the rift will likely attract attention from the other side.
Cassandra: That means demons. Stand ready!
The soldiers take up their positions as the PC opens the rift. A huge Pride demon materializes.
Cassandra: Now!
Boss Fight: Pride Demon
- Cassandra: We must strip its defenses! Quickly, wear it down!
- Cassandra: Quickly, disrupt the rift!
After the PC disrupts the rift the first time:
Cassandra: The demon is vulnerable—now!
When the first wave of shades appears:
Cassandra: More coming through the rift!
When the Pride demon is defeated:
Cassandra: Now! Seal the rift!
The PC begins to close the rift while the soldiers watch in awe.
Cassandra: Do it!
The scene cuts to Haven, showing the townspeople watch the rift close, and the screen fades to black.
