The Inquisition Reborn

The PC wakes up in bed, in an unfamiliar rustic cabin. A young elven woman walks in carrying supplies, and the PC sits up quickly, startling her.

Woman: Oh! I didn’t know you were awake, I swear!

Dialogue options:

1 - General: It’s all right.

PC: Don’t worry about it. I only—

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: Why are you afraid?

PC: Why are you frightened? What happened?

Woman: That’s wrong isn’t it? I said the wrong thing.

PC: I don’t… think so.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: Where am I?

PC: Is this another prison?

Woman: I… no? I mean, I don’t think so.

PC: Then where am I? Tell me!

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

The woman falls to the floor in reverence.

Woman: I beg you forgiveness and your blessing. I am but a humble servant. You are back in Haven, my [Lord/Lady]. They say you saved us. The Breach stopped growing, just like the mark on your hand. It’s all anyone has talked about for the last three days.

Dialogue options:

5 - General: Then we’re safe.

PC: Then the danger is over.

Woman: The Breach is still in the sky, but that’s what they say.

Scene continues. [8]

6 - General: They’re… pleased?

PC: So you’re saying… they’re happy with me?

Woman: I’m only saying what I heard. I didn’t mean anything by it.

Scene continues. [8]

7 - General: What happens now?

PC: So a trial happens now, I suppose.

Woman: I don’t know anything about that.

Scene continues. [8]

8 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

The woman stands and begins backing away as the PC rises from the bed.

Woman: I’m certain Lady Cassandra would want to know you’ve wakened. She said, “At once.”

PC: And where is she?

Woman: In the Chantry, with the Lord Chancellor. “At once,” she said.

The woman leaves quickly and the PC follows, traversing through awed crowds. The PC enters the Chantry. It is empty. As they walk down the hall, they can overhear Cassandra and Chancellor Roderick arguing.

Roderick: Have you gone completely mad? [They] should be taken to Val Royeaux immediately, to be tried by whomever becomes Divine!

Cassandra: I do not believe [they are] guilty.

Roderick: The prisoner failed, Seeker. The Breach is still in the sky. For all you know, [they] intended it this way.

Cassandra: I do not believe that.

Roderick: That is not for you to decide. Your duty is to serve the Chantry. [Did this guy not get the whole ‘annulled the Nevarran Accords’ memo?]

Cassandra: My duty is to serve the principles on which the Chantry was founded, Chancellor. As is yours.

The PC opens the door. Two templar knights stand guard, and Leliana, Chancellor Roderick, and Cassandra stand around the war table.

Roderick: Chain him. I want him prepared for travel to the capital for trial.

Cassandra: Disregard that, and leave us.

The templars salute and take their leave.

Roderick: You walk a dangerous line, Seeker.

Cassandra: The Breach is stable, but it is still a threat. I will not ignore it.

Dialogue options:

9 - General: I did what I could.

PC: I did everything I could to close the breach. It almost killed me.

Roderick. Yet you live. A convenient result, insofar as you’re concerned.

Cassandra: Have a care, Chancellor. The Breach is not the only threat we face.

Scene continues. [12]

10 - General: I’m still a suspect?

PC: So I’m still a suspect, even after what we just did?

Roderick: You absolutely are.

Cassandra: No, [they are] not.

Scene continues. [12]

11 - General: You want my help. Again.

PC: Let me guess: you need my help.

Roderick: You have done plenty. Your actions will be taken into account by the new Divine.

Cassandra: Have a care, Chancellor. The Breach is not the only threat we face.

Scene continues. [12]

12 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Leliana: Someone was behind the explosion at at the Conclave. Someone Most Holy did not expect. Perhaps they died with the others — or have allies who yet live.

RoderickI am a suspect?

Leliana: You, and many others.

Roderick: But not the prisoner.

Cassandra: I heard the voices in the temple. The Divine called to [them] for help.

Roderick: So [their] survival, that thing on [their] hand—all a coincidence?

Cassandra: Providence. The Maker sent [them] to us in our darkest hour.

Dialogue options:

13 - Pleased: Are you sure?

PC: You really think your maker would send someone like me?

Cassandra: The maker does as He wills. It is not for me to say.

PC: Even if that means a [Dalish elf/Dwarf/Qunari] is His chosen?

Cassandra: Humans are not the only people with an interest in the fate of the world.

Scene continues. [19]

14 - Pleased: Blessed be the maker.

PC: (quoting the Chant) “Though all before me is shadow, yet shall the Maker be my guide.”

Cassandra: We lost everything… then, out of nowhere, you came.

Scene continues. [19]

15 - Stoic: What more do you want?

PC: The Breach is stable now—what more do you want from me?

Cassandra: We must try again.

Scene continues. [19]

16 - Angry: Are you serious?

PC: Five minutes ago you wanted me dead, and now I’m your savior?

Cassandra: I was wrong. Perhaps I still am. I will not, however, pretend you were not exactly what we needed when we needed it.

Scene continues. [19]

17 - Surprised: You believe I’m innocent.

PC: So you’ve changed your mind about me.

Cassandra: I was wrong. Perhaps I still am. I will not, however, pretend you were not exactly what we needed when we needed it.

Scene continues. [19]

18 - Confused: I am not a “chosen one”
Dalish PCDwarf PCHuman PCQunari PC
PC: You realize I’m an elf. A Dalish elf.

Cassandra: I have not forgotten.
PC: You realize I’m a dwarf, right?

Cassandra: I have not forgotten.
Non-mage:
PC: You can’t honestly believe I’m any kind of “chosen one.”

Cassandra: We are all subject to the will of the Maker, whether we wish it or not.

Mage:
PC: You realize I’m a mage.

Cassandra: I have not forgotten.
PC: You realize I’m Qunari.

Cassandra: I have not forgotten.

Cassandra: No matter what you are, or what you believe, you are exactly what we needed when we needed it.

Scene continues. [19]

19 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Leliana: The breach remains, and your mark is still our only hope of closing it.

Roderick: This is not for you to decide.

Cassandra slams a large tome on the table. It is embellished with an eye insignia.

Cassandra: Do you know what this is, Chancellor. A writ from the Divine, granting us the authority to act. As of this moment, I declare the Inquisition reborn. We will close the breach, we will find those responsible, and we will restore order. With or without your approval.

She jabs an accusing finger at the Chancellor, who leaves.

Leliana: This is the Divine’s directive: rebuild the Inquisition of old. Find those who will stand against the chaos. We aren’t ready. We have no leader, no numbers, and now no Chantry support.

Cassandra: But we have no choice: we must act now.

Cassandra: (to PC) With you at our side.

Dialogue options:

20 - Investigate: “The Inquisition of old”?

PC: What is “the Inquisition of old,” exactly?

Leliana: It preceded the Chantry: people who banded together to restore order in a world gone mad.

Cassandra: After, they laid down their banner and formed the Templar Order. But the Templars have lost their way. We need those who can do what must be done united under a single banner once more.

Dialogue options:

26 - Special: What about the Chantry?

PC: But aren’t you still part of the Chantry?

Cassandra(Snorts.) Is that what you see?

Leliana: The Chantry will take time to find a new divine, and then it will wait for her direction.

Cassandra: But we cannot wait. So many Grand Clerics died at the Conclave… no, we are on our own. Perhaps forever.

Return to main dialogue tree.

21 - Investigate: You want a holy war.

PC: You’re trying to start a holy war.

Cassandra: We are already at war. You are already involved. Its mark is upon you. As to whether or not the war is holy… that depends on what we discover.

Return to dialogue tree.

22 - Investigate: And if I refuse?

PC: What if I refuse?

Leliana: You can go, if you wish.

Cassandra: You should know that while some believe you chosen, many still think you guilty. The Inquisition can only protect you if you are with us.

Leliana: We can also help you.

Cassandra: It will not be easy if you stay, but you cannot pretend this has not changed you.

Return to dialogue tree.

23 - General: I want to help.

PC: If you’re truly trying to restore order…

Leliana: That is the plan.

Scene continues. [27]

24 - General: This is rather strange.

PC: When I woke up, I certainly didn’t picture this outcome.

Leliana: Neither did we.

Scene continues. [27]

25 - General: I agree. For now.

PC: We’ll see how this goes.

Leliana: that is all we ask.

Scene continues. [27]

27 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Cassandra: Help us fix this before it’s too late.

The PC and Cassandra shake hands. The screen fades to black.

[There’s a purely cinematic cutscene of the beginning of the Inquisition that I don’t really want to describe.]

Report to Haven’s Chantry

Cassandra and the PC walk through the Chantry. The PC looks at their hand.

Cassandra: Does it trouble you?

Dialogue options:

1 - Pleased: Not anymore.

PC: It’s stopped spreading, and it doesn’t hurt.

Cassandra: We take our victories where we can.

Scene continues. [6]

2 - Angry: I want it gone.

PC: I wish I could get rid of it.

Cassandra: We have need of it yet.

PC: So you’ve mentioned.

Scene continues. [6]

3 - Stoic: It’s fine.

PC: Not really.

Scene continues. [6]

4 - Confused: Where does it come from?

PC: I just wish I knew what it was. Or how I got it.

Cassandra: We will find out.

Scene continues. [6]

5 - Sad: It didn’t close the Breach.

PC: If it wasn’t enough to close the Breach, what use is it?

Cassandra: You did everything we asked of you.

PC: And it still didn’t work.

Scene continues. [6]

6 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Cassandra: What’s important is that your mark is now stable, as is the Breach. You’ve given us time, and Solas believes a second attempt might succeed— provided the mark has more power. The same level of power used to open the Breach in the first place. That is not easy to come by.

Dialogue options:

7 - General: That sounds dangerous.

PC: Couldn’t that kind of power just make things worse?

Cassandra: And people call me a pessimist.

Scene continues. [10]

8 - General: Sounds like fun.

PC: What harm could there be in powering up something we barely understand?

Cassandra: Hold on to that sense of humor.

Scene continues. [10]

9 - General: You have an idea.

PC: Clearly you have something in mind.

Cassandra: we do.

Scene continues. [10]

10 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

They walk into the war room where Leliana, Cullen, and Josephine stand around the table.

Took the mountain pathCharged with the soldiers
Cassandra: May I present Commander Cullen, leader if the Inquisition’s forces.

Cullen: Such as they are. We lost many soldiers in the valley, and I fear many more before this is through.
Cassandra: You’ve met Commander Cullen, leader of the Inquisition’s forces.

Cullen: It was only for a moment on the field. I’m pleased to see you survived.

Cassandra: This is Lady Josephine Montilyet, our ambassador and chief diplomat.

Dalish PCDwarf/Human PCQunari PC
Josephine: Andaran Atish’an.

PC: You speak elven?

Josephine: You just heard the entirely of it I’m afraid.
Josephine: I have heard much. A pleasure to meet you at last.Josephine: You’re… even taller than I’d heard.

Cassandra: And of course you know sister Leliana.

Leliana: My position here involves a degree of…

Cassandra: She is our spymaster.

Leliana: Yes. Tactfully put, Cassandra.

Dialogue options:
  • General: A pleasure.
PC: Pleased to meet you all.

  • General: Impressive titles.
PC: That’s an impressive bunch of titles.

  • General: Why am I here?
PC: Cassandra tells me you have a plan.

Cassandra: I mentioned that your mark needs more power to close the Breach for good.

Leliana: Which means we must approach the rebel mages for help.

Cullen: I still disagree. The templars could serve just as well.

Cassandra: We need power, Commander. Enough magic poured into that mark—

Cullen: Might destroy us all. Templars could suppress the Breach, weaken it so—

Leliana: Pure speculation.

CullenI was a templar. I know what they’re capable of.

Josephine: Unfortunately, neither group will speak to us yet. The Chantry has denounced the Inquisition—

Josephine: (to PC) And you, specifically.

Dialogue options:

11 - General: They still think I did it.

PC: They still think I’m guilty.

Josephine: That is not the entirety of it any longer.

Scene continues. [14]

12 - General: That was quick.

PC: That didn’t take long.

Cullen: Shouldn’t they be busy arguing over who’s going to become Divine?

Scene continues. [14]

13 - General: does it matter?

PC: Can’t you simply ignore them?

Leliana: Of only that were possible.

Scene continues. [14]

Josephine: The remaining Clerics have declared it blasphemy, and we heretics for harboring you.

Cassandra: Chancellor Roderick’s doing, no doubt.

Josephine: It limits our options. Approaching the mages or templars for help is currently out of the question.

Dialogue options:

15 - Investigate: The Herald of Andraste?

PC: Just how am I the “Herald of Andraste”?

Cassandra: People saw what you did at the temple, how you stopped the Breach from growing. They have also heard about the woman seen in the rift when we first found you. They believe that was Andraste.

Leliana: Even if we tried to stop that view from spreading—

Cassandra: Which we have not.

Leliana: The point is, everyone is talking about you.

Cullen: It’s quite the title, isn’t it? How do you feel about that?

Dialogue options:
Return to previous tree.
17 - General: I like it.

PC: I don’t mind it at all.

Scene continues. [23]

18 - General: I don’t know.

PC: I’m not sure how I should feel.

Cullen: The Chantry has decided that for you, it seems.

Scene continues. [23]

19: General: It’s unnerving.

PC: It’s… a little unsettling.

Cullen: I’m sure the Chantry would agree.

Scene continues. [23]

20: General: They’re wrong.

PC: I’m no herald of anything. Particularly Andraste.

Cullen: I’m sure the Chantry would agree.

Scene continues. [23]

23 - Scene continues.

Leliana: People are desperate for a sign of hope. For some, you’re that sign.

Josephine: And to others, a symbol of everything that’s gone wrong.

Return to main dialogue tree.

16 - General: Could we be attacked?

PC: Will the Chantry attack us?

Cullen: With what? They only have words at their disposal.

Josephine: And yet, they may bury us with them.

Scene continues. [24]

17 - General: So I’m the problem.

PC: So if I wasn’t with the Inquisition…

Cullen: Let’s be honest: They would have censured us no matter what.

Cassandra: And you not being here isn’t an option.

Scene continues. [24]

18 - General: the Breach doesn’t worry them?

PC: They aren’t more concerned about the Breach? The real threat?

Cullen: They do know that it is a threat, they just don’t think we can stop it.

Josephine: The Chantry is telling everyone that you’ll make it worse.

Scene continues. [24]

24 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Leliana: There is something you can do. A Chantry Cleric by the name Mother Giselle has asked to speak to you. She is not far, and knows those involved far better than I. Her assistance could be invaluable.

Dialogue options:

25 - General: I’ll talk to her.

PC: I’ll see what she has to say.

Scene continues. [28]

26: General: Why would she help us?

PC: Why would someone from the Chantry help a declared heretic?

Leliana: I understand she is a reasonable sort. Perhaps she doesn’t agree with her sisters?

Scene continues. [28]

27: General: That could be trouble.

PC: She’s asked for me? You don’t think that could be an ambush?

Leliana: I doubt it. From what I know her, she is a kind soul and not the sort to involve herself in violence.

Scene continues. [28]

28: Scene continues.
Return to previous main tree.

Leliana: You’ll find Mother Giselle tending to the wounded in the Hinterlands near Redcliffe.

Cullen: Look for other opportunities to expand the Inquisition’s influence while you’re there.

Josephine: We need agents to extend our reach beyond this valley, and you’re better suited than anyone to recruit them.

Cassandra: In the meantime, let’s think of other options. I won’t leave this all to the Herald.

The scene fades to black. The war table is unlocked. A cutscene plays upon completing the Scout the Hinterlands operation: Inquisition scouts clear out hostile enemies near the crossroads. Scout Harding sends a crow back to Leliana, informing her that they are doing their best to protect Mother Giselle while she tend to refugees.

Mother Giselle

The PC arrives in the Hinterlands and is greeted by Scout Harding.

Harding: The Herald of Andraste! I’ve heard the stories. Everyone has. We know what you did at the Breach.

Dalish PCDwarf PCHuman PCQunari PC
Harding: It’s odd for a Dalish elf to care what happens to anyone else, but you’ll get no back talk here. That’s a promise.Harding: It’s good to see another dwarf in the Inquisition. There aren’t many of us around.Non-mage:
Harding: It’s an honor to meet you, my [lord/lady]

Mage:
Harding: Everyone’s a little nervous around mages right now, but you’ll get no back talk here. That’s a promise.
Harding: They might not know much about the Qunari, but you’ll get no backtalk from anyone here. That’s a promise.

Harding: Inquisition Scout Harding, at your service. I—all of us here—we’ll do whatever we can to help.

Varric: Harding, huh? Ever been to Kirkwall’s Hightown?

Harding: I can’t say I have. Why?

Varric: You’d be Harding in… oh, never mind.

Cassandra(Disgusted noise.)

Dialogue options:

1 - General: Pleased to meet you.

PC: It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Harding: We should get to business. The situation’s pretty dire.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: You heard stories about me?

PC: I’m starting to worry about these “stories” that everyone’s heard.

Harding: Oh. There’s nothing to worry about. They only say you’re the last great hope for Thedas.

PC: Oh. Wonderful.

Harding: The Hinterlands are as good a place as any to start fixing things.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: What’s the word out here?

PC: What’s the situation out here in the Hinterlands?

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Harding: We came to secure horses from Redcliffe’s old horsemaster. I grew up here, and people always said that Dennet’s herd were the strongest and fastest this side of the Frostbacks. But with the mage-templar fighting getting worse, we couldn’t get to Dennet. Maker only knows if he’s even still alive. Mother Giselle’s at the crossroads helping refugees and the wounded. Our latest reports say that the war’s spread there too. Corporal Vale and our men are doing what they can to help protect the people, but they won’t be able to hold out very long. You best get going. No time to lose.

Harding walks away, leaving the PC at the camp. [Ser—I’ve something for you.] The Party follows a rocky dirt path down towards the crossroads.

PC: Mother Giselle should be somewhere nearby.

The PC wanders away from the crossroads.

  • Cassandra: Mother Giselle cannot be far.
  • Varric: Mother Giselle ought to be around here somewhere.

They hear fighting, and they join up with Inquisition soldiers.

Cassandra: Inquisition forces! They’re trying to protect the refugees!

Varric: Looks like they could use a hand.

They begin fighting against rebel templars.

Cassandra: Hold! We are not apostates!

Solas: I do not think they care, Seeker.

After defeating the templars, a wave of rebel mages join the fray.

Solas: We are not templars! We mean you no harm!

Varric: Doesn’t look like they’re listening.

Solas: More coming our way!

A few more templars arrive, but the party deals with them in short order.

Cassandra: That’s the end of it.

The PC walks through the Crossroads, where numerous wounded soldiers and refugees are milling about. Two soldiers post up an Inquisition banner, and the PC leaves to find Mother Giselle. She is kneeling beside a wounded soldier with a mage standing behind her.

Giselle: There are mages here who can heal your wounds. Lie still.

Soldier: Don’t… let them touch me, Mother. Their magic…

Giselle: Turned to noble purpose, their magic is surely no more evil than your blade.

Soldier: But…

Giselle: Hush, dear boy. Allow them to ease your suffering.

The PC walks up.

PC: Mother Giselle?

Giselle: I am. And  you must be the one they’re calling the Herald of Andraste.

Dialogue options:

5 - General: I don’t want them to.

PC: Not through any choice of mine.

Giselle: We seldom have much say in our fate, I’m sad to say.

PC: So you agree with them?

Giselle: I do not presume to know the Maker’s intentions, for any of us. But I did not ask you to come simply to debate with me.

PC: Then why am I here?

Scene continues. [9]

6 - General: You’re not against magic?

PC: What you said to that soldier…

Giselle: We do not teach that magic is evil. We teach that pride is evil — and does not corrupt only mages. But I did not ask you to come simply to debate with me.

Scene continues. [9]

7 - General: You asked for me?

PC: I’m told you asked for me.

Scene continues. [9]

8 - General: Is that why I’m here?

PC: Is that why you asked for me? The Chantry has already—

Giselle: I know what they’ve done.

PC: Then why am I here?

Scene continues. [9]

9 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

The PC and Giselle walk through the crossroads, past more wounded and many dead

Giselle: I know of the Chantry’s denouncement, and I’m familiar with those behind it. I won’t lie to you: some of them are grandstanding, hoping to increase their chances of becoming the new Divine. Some are simply terrified. So many good people, senselessly taken from us…

Dialogue options:

10 - General: It was a tragedy.

PC: What happened was horrible.

Giselle: Fear makes us desperate, but hopefully not beyond reason.

Scene continues. [13]

11 - General: Don’t you support the Chantry?

PC: But don’t you stand with the rest of the Chantry?

Giselle: With no Divine, we are each left to our own conscience, and mine tells me this.

Scene continues. [13]

12 - General: That’s no excuse.

PC: And that’s an excuse? They’re making things worse.

Giselle: They don’t know that. This is my point.

Giselle: Go to them. Convince the remaining Clerics you are no demon to be feared. They have heard only frightening tales of you. Give them something else to believe.

Dialogue options:

14 - General: Appeal to them?

PC: you want me to appeal to them?

Giselle: If I thought you were incapable, I wouldn’t suggest it.

PC: Will they even listen?

Scene continues. [17]

15 - General: Will that work?

16 - General: But they want me dead.

PC: They want to execute me, and you think I should just walk up to them?

Giselle: You are no longer alone. They cannot imprison or attack you.

PC: They could try.

Scene continues. [17]

17 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Giselle: Let me put it this way: you needn’t convince them all. You just need some of them to doubt. Their power is their unified voice. Take that from them, and you receive the time you need.

Dialogue Options:
  • General: Thank you.
PC: It’s good of you to do this.

  • General: Are you sure?
PC: So I show up, say hello, show them the mark on my hand…?

  • General: That won’t be easy.
PC: you make it sound simple.

Giselle: I honestly don’t know if you’ve been touched by fate or sent to help us… but I hope. Hope is what we need now. The people will listen to your rallying call, as they will listen to no other. You could build the Inquisition into a force that will deliver us… or destroy us. I will go to Haven and provide Sister Leliana the names of those in the Chantry that would be amenable to a gathering. It is not much, but I will do whatever I can.

Mother Giselle walks away.

Riot at Haven’s Chantry

As the PC approaches the Chantry, they notice a large, loud crowd outside its doors, comprised of mages and templars.

Templar: Your kind killed the Most Holy!

Mage: Lies—your kind let her die.

Templar: Shut your mouth, mage!

The templar moves to draw his sword when Cullen intervenes, placing himself between the two.

Pro-mage HawkePro-templar Hawke
Templar: Knight-Captain!Templar: Knight-Commander!

Cullen: That is not my title. We are not templars any longer. We are all part of the Inquisition!

He points angrily at the two offending parties as he speaks. Chancellor Roderick approaches.

Roderick: And what does that mean, exactly?

Cullen: Back already, Chancellor? Haven’t you done enough?

Roderick: I’m curious, Commander, as to how your Inquisition and it’s “Herald” will restore order as you’ve promised.

Cullen: Of course you are.

Cullen (to the crowd): Back to your duties, all of you.

The PC walks up to Cullen and Chancellor Roderick.

Cullen: Mages and templars were already at war. Now they’re blaming each other for the Divine’s death.

Roderick: Which is why we require a proper authority to guide them back to order.

Cullen: Who, you? Random clerics who weren’t important enough to be at the Conclave?

Roderick: The rebel Inquisition and it’s so-called “Herald of Andraste”? I think not.

Dialogue options:

1 - General: Why can’t we work together?

PC: So far, you’re the only one who’s insisted we can’t work together.

Roderick: We might, if your Inquisition would recognize the Chantry’s authority.

Cullen: There is no authority until another Divine is chosen.

Roderick: In due time. Andraste will be our guide, not some dazed wanderer on a mountainside.

Scene continues. [5]

2 - General: I’m not the Herald.

PC: I don’t believe I’m Andraste’s Herald any more than you do do, Chancellor.

Roderick: That laudable humility won’t stop the Inquisition from using the misconceptions when it suits them.

Cullen: The Inquisition claims only that we must close the Breach or perish.

Roderick: You say that now commander. We shall see if the sentiment remains true.

Scene continues. [5]

3 - General: We’re not so terrible.

PC: I don’t know, the Inquisition seems about as functional as any young family.

Roderick: How many families are on the verge of splitting into open warfare with themselves?

Cullen: Yes, because that would never happen to the Chantry.

Roderick: Centuries of tradition guide us. We’re not the upstart, eager to turn over every apple cart.

Scene continues. [5]

4 - General: The “proper” authority failed.

PC: If the “proper” authority hadn’t completely failed, the conclave wouldn’t have been needed.

Roderick: So you suggest I blame he Chantry and exalt a murderer? What of Justice?

Cullen: That won’t help restore order in the here and now.

Roderick: Order will never be restored so long as this rebellion is allowed to fester.

Scene continues. [5]

5 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.
Dialogue options:

6 - Investigate: Cullen, why is he here?

PC: Remind me why you’re allowing the Chancellor to stay?

Roderick (to PC): Clearly your templar knows where to draw the line.

Cullen: He’s toothless. There’s no point turning him into a martyr simply because he runs at the mouth. The Chancellor’s a good indicator of what to expect in Val Royeaux, however.

Return to dialogue tree.

7- Investigate: Is the mage-templar war large?

PC: How widespread is the violence between mages and templars?

Cullen: Impossible to say.

Roderick: Your whole organization floating the Chantry’s authority will not help matters.

Cullen: With the Conclave destroyed, I imagine the war between mages and templars has renewed. With interest.

Return to dialogue tree.

8 - Investigate: But who killed the Divine?

PC: The mages and templars are fighting even though we don’t know what really happened at the Temple of Sacred Ashes?

Roderick: Exactly why this should all be left to a new Divine. If you are innocent, the Chantry will establish it as so.

Cullen: Or will be happy to use someone as a scapegoat.

Roderick: You think nobody cares about the truth? We all grieve Justinia’s loss.

Cullen: But you won’t grieve if the Herald of Andraste is conveniently swept under a carpet.

Return to dialogue tree.

9 - General: I’ll return with good news.

PC: I’ll make sure they see reason in Val Royeaux.

Cullen: I pray you’re right.

Scene continues. [12]

10 - General: Good luck keeping order.

PC: Don’t let anyone riot while we’re gone.

Cullen: The walls will be standing when you return. I hope.

Scene continues. [12]

11 - General: I hope the trip is worth it.

PC: Well, let’s hope we find a solution, and not a cathedral full of chancellors.

Cullen: The stuff of nightmares.

Scene continues. [12]

12 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

The PC speaks to Cullen again.

Cullen: I will keep the peace while you and the others appeal to the Chantry in Val Royeaux.

Roderick: Better ready yourself for the blame you will be rightly assigned.

Address the Chantry at Val Royeaux

The PC is at the war table with their advisors and Cassandra after making the decision to begin operations in Val Royeaux.

Josephine: Having the Herald address the clerics is not a terrible idea.

Cullen: you can’t be serious.

Josephine: Mother Giselle isn’t wrong: at the moment, the Chantry’s only strength is that they are united in opinion.

Leliana: And we should ignore the danger to the herald?

Josephine: Let’s ask [them].

Dialogue options:

1 - General: This may not actually help.

PC: I’m more concerned this won’t actually solve any problems.

Cullen: I agree. It just lends credence to the idea that we should care what the Chantry says.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: This is a terrible plan.

PC: You want me to walk into a pit of vipers, and you ask me that?

Josephine: They are not vipers just because they like to hiss.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: I’m not worried.

PC: What can they do? It’s just talk.

Leliana: Do not underestimate the power of their words. An angry mob will do you in just as quickly as a blade.

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Cassandra: I will go with [them]. Mother Giselle said she could provide us names? Use them.

Leliana: But why? This is nothing but a—

Cassandra: What choice do we have, Leliana? Right now we can’t approach anyone for help with the Breach. Use what influence we have to call the clerics together. Once they are ready, we will see this through.

Operation confirmed. The party arrives at Val Royeaux.

Cassandra: The city still mourns.

They pass by a couple that cower and run at the sight of the party.

Varric: Just a guess, Seeker, but I think they all know who we are.

Cassandra: Your skills of observation never fail to impress me Varric.

The party is greeted by an Inquisition scout at the gates.

Scout: My lord Herald.

Cassandra: You’re one of Leliana’s people. What have you found?

Scout: The Chantry mothers await you, but… so do a great many templars.

Cassandra: There are templars here?

Scout: People seem to think the templars will protect them from… from the Inquisition. They’re gathering on the other side of the market. I think that’s where the templars intend to meet you.

Cassandra: Only one thing to do, then.

They enter the Capital.

Cassandra: They wish to protect the people? From us?

[This is a weird, buggy conversation that looks like ambient dialogue, but you must quickly speak to the scout to enable a response.]

Dialogue options:

5 - General: We expected this.

PC: We knew there would be some kind of reaction.

Cassandra: But I didn’t expect the templars to make an appearance.

Scout: The people may just be assuming what the templars will do. I’ve heard of no concrete plans.

Scene continues. [8]

6 - General: Protect them from me.

PC: Protect them from the blasphemous Herald of Andraste, I’d say.

Cassandra: Surely they cannot think such a thing!

PC: Why not? They wouldn’t be the only ones.

Scene continues. [8]

7 - General: They can try.

PC: They can certainly try.

Cassandra: We don’t want a pitched battle in the middle of Val Royeaux.

PC: That’s their choice, isn’t it?

Scene continues. [8]

8 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Varric: Do you think the Order’s returned to the fold, maybe? To deal with us upstarts?

Cassandra: I know Lord Seeker Lucius. I can’t imagine him coming to the Chantry’s defense, not after all that’s occurred.

Dialogue options:
  • General: We could talk to the templars.
PC: We’re doing all this to get help with the breach. Maybe this is our chance to get the templars on our side.

  • General: Sounds like trouble.
PC: So, the potential for trouble has increased twofold.

  • General: It changes nothing.
PC: it just means I have a larger audience to convince.

Cassandra: Perhaps.

Cassandra (to the Scout): Return to Haven. Someone will need to inform them if we are… delayed.

Scout: As you say, my lady.

The party progresses into Val Royeaux through a walkway flanked with statues. The PC and Cassandra approach the stage, where a crowd has formed. Three Chantry clergy are on the stage, surrounded by templar guards. Revered Mother Hevara speaks.

Hevara: Good people of Val Royeaux, hear me! Together, we mourn our Divine. Her naive and beautiful heart silenced by treachery! You wonder what will become of her murderer. Well, wonder no more! Behold, the so-called Herald of Andraste! Claiming to rise where our beloved fell. We say this is a false prophet!

Dalish PCDwarf PCHuman PCQunari PC

Hevara: No servant of anything beyond [their] selfish greed!

Mage:
Hevara: The Maker would send no mage in our hour of need!
Hevara: A wicked Qunari sent to subvert the Maker’s word!
Dialogue Options:
  • General: Let us talk peacefully.
PC: We came here in peace, simply to talk—and this is what you do? I implore you: Let us sit down together, to deal with the real threat!

  • General: Stop this. Now.
PC: Enough! I will not listen to these self-serving lies! We came here to talk!

  • General: We have a real enemy.
PC: You say I am the enemy. The Breach in the sky is our true enemy. We must unite to stop it.

  • General (claimed to be chosen): You’re wrong. I am the Herald.
PC: And do you know everything the Maker commands? Look up in the sky! I alone survived the Breach—and I can end it!

  • General: (denied being chosen): I never claimed to be.
PC: I make no such claim! I wasn’t sent here by Andraste or the Maker! I’m simply trying to close the Breach. It threatens us all!

Cassandra: It’s true! The Inquisition seeks only to end this madness before it is too late!

Hevara: It is already too late!

The Mother points to a squad of templars that approach the stage.

Hevara: The templars have returned to the Chantry! They will face this “Inquisition,” and the people will be safe once more!

One of the templars punches Mother Hevara in the face as they cross the stage. She falls to the ground.

Hevara(Cries out.)

Lucius (to Barris): Still yourself. She is beneath us.

Barris looks unsure.

Dialogue options:

9 - Angry: How dare you!

PC: What’s the meaning of this?

Lucius: Her claim to “authority” is an insult. Much like your own.

Scene continues. [13]

10 -  Stoic: Am I supposed to be impressed?

PC: Was that display supposed to impress me?

Lucius: On the contrary. It wasn’t for you at all.

Scene continues. [13]

11 - Surprised: Not here for us, then?

PC: You’re not here to deal with the Inquisition?

Lucius: As if there were any reason to.

Scene continues. [13]

12 - Pleased: Saved me the trouble.

PC: I was just about to do that myself.

Lucius: As if I would do anything for your pleasure.

Scene continues. [13]

13 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Cassandra: Lord Seeker Lucius, it’s imperative that we speak with—

Lucius: You will not address me.

Lucius begins to walk away, the templars gathering with him.

Cassandra: Lord Seeker?

Lucius: Creating a heretical movement, raising up a puppet as Andraste’s prophet. You should be ashamed. You should all be ashamed! The templars failed no one when they left the Chantry to purge the mages! You are the ones who failed! You who’d leash our righteous swords with doubt and fear! If you came to appeal to the Chantry, you are too late. The only destiny here that demands respect is mine.

Dialogue options:

14 - General: Templars! Join as Cullen did.

PC: Templars, one of your own commands the Inquisition’s forces. Join us, as he did!

Lucius(Scoffs.) A staunch and loyal member of the Order. So loyal, he abandoned them for a false Herald.

Scene continues. [18]

15 - General: Help us close the Breach.

PC: What we truly need is an alliance that will seal the Breach.

Lucius: Oh, the Breach is indeed a threat. But you certainly have no power to do anything about it.

Scene continues. [18]

16 - General: Then why are you here?

PC: If you’re not here to help the Chantry, then you just came to make speeches?

Lucius: I came to see what frightens old women so, and to laugh.

Scene continues. [18]

17 - General: You refuse the Herald?

PC: And what if I really am the Herald of Andraste?

Lucius: You have nothing. No influence, no power, and certainly no holy purpose.

Scene continues. [18]

18 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Barris: But Lord Seeker… what if he really was sent by the Maker? What if—?

Templar Officer (to Barris): You are called to a higher purpose! Do not question!

Lucius: I will make the templar order a power that stands alone against the void. We deserve recognition. Independence! You have shown me nothing, and the Inquisition… less than nothing.

Lucius (to templars): Templars! Val Royeaux is unworthy of our protection! We march!

Lucius and the templars leave Val Royeaux. Varric and Solas join the PC and Cassandra.

Varric: Charming fellow, isn’t he.

Cassandra: Has Lord Seeker Lucius gone mad?

Dialogue options:

19 - Investigate: How well do you know him?

PC: Do you know him very well?

Cassandra: He took over the Seekers of Truth two years ago, after Lord Seeker Lambert’s death. He was always a decent man, never given to grandstanding. This is very bizarre. *

Return to dialogue tree.

20 - Will he see reason?

PC: Do you think he can be reasoned with?

Cassandra: I hope so. If not him, there are surely others in the Order who don’t feel as he does.

Scene continues. [23]

21- So much for templar help.

PC: It doesn’t look like we’ll be getting the templar to help us after all.

Cassandra: I wouldn’t write them off so quickly. There must be those in the Order who see what he’s become.

Scene continues. [23]

22 - We’ll find another way.

PC: Fortunately, the templars aren’t our only hope.

Cassandra: I wouldn’t write them off so quickly. There must be those in the Order who see what he’s become.

Scene continues. [23]

23 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Cassandra: Either way, we should first return to Haven and inform the others.

The scene fades to black.

* [Lucius took over the Seekers in 9:40 Dragon, only one year before the events in Val Royeaux. I estimate the explosion to have occurred in early 9:41 Dragon, based on the timeline in Asunder taking place over the course of ~3 months in 9:40,  with one month between the events at the White Spire and the final Conclave of the College of Enchanters at Andoral’s Reach. Lucius only takes over the Seekers after Lord Seeker Lambert’s death that occurs after the dissolution of the Circles, when he annuls the Nevarran Accord. My guess is that PC reaches Skyhold mid 9:41, since the new Divine is elected in 9:42 and the Inquisition does a whole lot of stuff in the meanwhile, which places the visit to Val Royeaux comfortably in the first half of 9:41 Dragon. It’s only been a year at most since Lucius took over the Seekers. /end rant]

Abandoned by the Templars

The PC approaches the fallen Revered Mother Hevara. The other Chantry clergy that accompanied her on stage are kneeling by her side.

Hevara: This victory must please you greatly, Seeker Cassandra.

Cassandra: We came here only seeking to speak with the mothers. This is not our doing, but yours.

Hevara: And you had no part in forcing our hand? Do not delude yourself. Now we have been shown up by our own templars, in front of everyone. And my fellow clerics have scattered to the wind, along with their convictions.

Choice dependent dialogue:
Hevara: Just tell me one thing: do you truly believe you are the Maker’s chosen?
Dialogue options:

1 - General: Why do you care?

PC: Haven’t you already made up your mind? Why ask me now?

Hevara: Because, despite all my fears… what if it’s true? What if I have erred?

Scene continues. [8]

2 - General: I don’t know.

PC: To tell you the truth, I don’t know.

Hevara: That is… more comforting than you might imagine.

Scene continues. [8]

3 - General: I do, yes.

PC: I do believe it. Do you have a better explanation?

Hevara: Several, but… are they the truth? I am left to question all I have been taught.

Scene continues. [8]

8 - Scene continues.
Return to choice dependent dialogue

Hevara: I suppose it is out of our hands now. We shall all see what the Maker plans in the days to come.

Dialogue options:

9 - Investigate: How many templars rebelled?

PC: How many templars turned on the Chantry, exactly?

Hevara(Chuckles.) They rebelled across Thedas. Some remained loyal, but not enough to call them “the Order.” The White Spire here in the capital was the largest garrison, but now it stands empty. Perhaps more shall flock to the Lord Seeker’s banner now. How far has faith waned, I wonder?

Return to dialogue tree.

10 - Investigate: Where have the templars gone?

PC: Where is the Lord Seeker taking the templars?

Hevara: I can’t begin to guess the Lord Seeker’s mind. He could not have abandoned his intended role more completely.

Cassandra: There must be sense to it that we can’t see.

Hevara: Must there? Rebellion seems popular in certain quarters, doesn’t it Seeker? Is crafting the templars into a new power really any worse than declaring a rival to the Chantry itself?

Dialogue options:

17 - Investigate: What did you want him to do?

PC: What were you hoping the Lord Seeker would do, exactly?

Hevara: Put aside his war against the mages and find common purpose against something much more dire. Obviously, he has other plans. With the knights-vigilant slain at the conclave, there is nothing more we can do.

Cassandra: Perhaps there is something we can do.

Hevara: I’d like to believe that, Seeker, I truly would. I suppose we can expect renewed effort against the mages from him, and yet more chaos.

Return to main dialogue tree.

11 - Investigate: What do you believe about me?

PC: You’re obviously skeptical. What do you believe I am?

Hevara: Our Divine, Her Holiness, is dead. I have seen evidence for everything except what would comfort me.

PC: That doesn’t answer my question.

Hevara: For you to be true, a great many things must be false. And if you are false, a great many things must have failed. There’s chaos ahead, whatever you intentions.

Return to dialogue tree.

12 - Investigate: What will the Chantry do now?

PC: What happens now? Will the Chantry continue to denounce me?

Hevara(Chuckles.) We have already done so, and what good has it done us? Now it falls on us to select a new Divine, if we can, and leave the next step to her.

Cassandra: Provided such a selection is even possible.

Hevara: I truly don’t know. Any revered mother who could have followed Justinia died at the Conclave. What becomes of us, and your Inquisition, is in the Maker’s hands now.

Return to dialogue tree.

13 - Investigate: How are people reacting?

PC: How are people responding to all of this?

Hevara: Despair. Fear. We mourn Her Holiness. The people look to the sky and wonder how long before terror comes for us all. There must be a way through this. Is it you? The templars? The Maker’s will? We abandoned our duties, we servants of the faith. Now we can only pay.

Return to dialogue tree.

14 - General: I’ll stop this somehow.

PC: There’s got to be a way to calm everything down and clean up this mess.

Hevara: I hope against hope that may be the case.

Scene continues.[18]

15 - General: You could still help us.

PC: It’s not too late: the Chantry could still help us and come out on top.

Hevara: if only that were true.

PC: What’s to stop you from trying?

Hevara: We are not looking for a winning horse. We are simply trying to do the right thing.

Scene continues.[18]

16 - General: The Chantry made a mistake.

PC: The Chantry made a big mistake, and now it’s paying the price.

Hevara: Perhaps you are correct. We are only trying to find our way, with little guidance now but our faith.
PC: That’s not enough.

Hevara: Was it ever enough? That is the nature of faith.

Scene continues.[18]

18 - Scene continues.
Return to previous main tree.

Hevara (if spoken to again): Leave me be, survivor. Your presence here is not comforting.

The party goes to leave Val Royeaux. An elf wearing Circle robes appears behind them and approaches.

Fiona: If I might have a moment of your time?

Cassandra: Grand Enchanter Fiona?

Solas: Leader of the Mage rebellion. Is it not dangerous for you to be here?

Fiona: I heard of this gathering, and I wanted to see the fabled Herald of Andraste with my own eyes.

Mage PCNon-mage PC
Fiona: If it’s help with the breach you seek, perhaps you should look among your fellow mages.Fiona: If it’s help with the breach you seek, perhaps my people are the wiser option.
Dialogue options:

19 - Investigate: You weren’t at the Conclave?

PC: I’m surprised the leader of the mages wasn’t at the conclave.

Cassandra: Yes. You were supposed to be, and yet somehow you avoided death.

Fiona: As did the Lord Seeker, you’ll note. Both of us sent negotiators in our stead, in case it was a trap. I won’t pretend I’m not glad to live. I lost many dear friends that day. It disgusts me to think that the templars will get away with it. I’m hoping you won’t let them.

Dialogue options:

25 - Investigate: You think the templars did it?

PC: So you think the templars are responsible?

Cassandra: Why wouldn’t she?

Fiona: Lucius hardly seems broken up over his losses, if he’s concerned about them at all. You heard him. You think he wouldn’t happily kill the Divine to turn people against us? So yes, I think he did it. More than I think you did it, at any rate.

Return to main dialogue tree.

20 - Investigate: We have nothing in common.

PC: Fellow mages? We have nothing in common.

Fiona: More than you’d think, and certainly more in common than with templar thugs.

Return to dialogue tree.

21 - Investigate: I was hoping for this.

PC: That would have been my first choice, if you’d be willing to speak with us.

Fiona: We’re willing now. That’s the important thing.

Return to dialogue tree.

22 - General: Will you help us?

PC: Does that mean the mages will help us?

Fiona: We are willing to discuss it with the Inquisition, at least.

Scene continues. [26]

23 - General: Why speak to us now?

PC: The mages weren’t willing to talk to the Inquisition before. Why now?

Fiona: Because now I’ve seen what you are. And I’ve seen the Chantry for what it is.

Scene continues. [26]

24 - General: In return for what?/What does your help cost?

PC: And what do you want in exchange for the mages’ help?

Fiona: Oh. I haven’t promised the Inquisition our help yet.

Scene continues. [26]

26 - Scene continues.
Return to previous main tree.

Fiona: Consider this an invitation to Redcliffe: come meet with the mages. An alliance could help us both, after all. I hope to see you there. Au revior, my [lord/lady] Herald.

Fiona leaves.

Cassandra: Come. Let us return to Haven.

The party leaves.

Choosing a Side

The PC and Cassandra return to the Chantry in Haven. Josephine approaches them.

Josephine: It’s good you’ve returned. We heard of your encounter.

Cassandra: You heard?

Cullen and Leliana join the group, and they begin making their way to the war room.

Leliana: My agents in the city sent word ahead, of course.

Cullen: It’s a shame the templars abandoned their senses as well as the capitol.

Dialogue options:
  • General: Going was worth the risk
PC: We had to do something, and now we have an opportunity.

  • General: At least we made contact.
PC: At least we know how to approach the mages and templars now.

  • General: The Chantry’s dealt with.
PC: At least we know the Chantry is no longer a threat to us.

Josephine: Yes, and now we have the opening we need to approach the templars and the mages.

Cassandra: Do we? Lord Seeker Lucius is not the man I remember.

Leliana: True. He has taken the Order somewhere, but the to do what? My reports have been… very odd.

Cullen: We must look into it. I’m certain not everyone in the Order will support the Lord Seeker.

Josephine: Or the Herald could simply go to meet the mages in Redcliffe, instead.

Cullen stops and turns to face Josephine.

Cullen: You think the mage rebellion is more united? It could be ten times worse?

Dialogue options:

1 - General: You must choose soon.

PC: Or you could stop bickering and make a decision

Cassandra: I agree.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: We should meet the mages

PC: I could at least find out what the mages want.

Cassandra: No doubt what they’ve always wanted: support for their cause.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: We should find the templars.

PC: I think the templars are worth investigating.

Cassandra: I agree. What could the Lord Seeker be up to?

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Josephine: We shouldn’t discount Redcliffe. The mages may be worth the risk.

Cassandra: They are powerful, Ambassador, but more desperate than you realize.

Dialogue options:
  • General: You think it’s a trap?
PC: You think the invitation could be some kind of trap?

  • General: There’s always danger.
PC: So it’ll be dangerous. I’ve been in danger since I walked out of the Fade.

  • General: They could be useful.
PC: After the Divine’s death, they’re probably scrambling for allies.

Casandra: If some among the rebel mages are responsible for what happened at the Conclave…

Josephine: The same could be said about the templars.

Cullen: True enough. Right now, I’m not certain we have enough influence to approach the Order safely.

Cassandra: The the Inquisition needs agents in more places.

Cassandra (to PC): That’s something you can help with.

Josephine: In the meantime, we should consider other options.

Josephine, Cullen, and Cassandra leave one-by-one, leaving Leliana and the PC.

Leliana: There is one other matter. Several months ago, the Grey Wardens of Ferelden vanished. I sent word to those in Orlais, but they have also disappeared. Ordinarily I wouldn’t even consider the idea they’re involved in all this, but the timing is… curious.

Dialogue options:

5- Investigate: Who are the Grey Wardens?

PC: Grey Wardens? I’m not familiar with them.

Leliana: They’re the ancient order that has existed to fight darkspawn invasions since the First Blight, thousands of years ago. They have faded since those glory days, but haven’t disappeared entirely. Ordinarily, their order is neutral in political affairs, but they… appear in strange places.

Return to dialogue tree.

6 - General: It sounds suspicious.

PC: That does sound odd, I agree.

Scene continues. [9]

7 - General: Why tell me?

PC: So you’re telling me this because…?

Scene continues. [9]

8 - General: You’re grasping at straws.

PC: Do you have proof? It could just be a coincidence.

Scene continues. [9]

9 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Leliana: The others have disregarded my suspicion, but I cannot ignore it. Two days ago, my agents in the Hinterlands heard news of a Grey Warden by the name of Blackwall. If you have the opportunity, please seek him out. Perhaps he can put my mind at ease.

PC: And if he can’t?

Leliana: There may be more going on than we thought.

Leliana leaves, and the scene fades to black. The player is now left to decide between the mages and the templars.
