How to Train a Griffon

Limited Conversation

Rook walks into Davrin’s room.

Rook: It looks like our boy Assan is feeling his oats. Or… whatever griffons feel.

Davrin: He’s getting the hang of it. When he listens.

Pre-WeisshauptPost-Weisshaupt
Rook: He seems to be able to handle himself so far.

Assan: (Proud squawk)

Davrin: You got lucky the Gloom Howler didn’t tear you to pieces, boy. You wait for my command, we attack together—then we can kill stuff like that.
Rook: He didn’t back down at Weisshaupt.

Davrin: Can’t tell if he’s brave or doesn’t know any better.

Rook: There’s a difference?

Davrin: I don’t want to throw him into the fire like that.

Rook: At least he’s learning.

Davrin: The instincts kick in. Griffons see darkspawn, and it’s a fight to the death. Like wolves hunting deer. Just need to corral it.

Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: He looks so tame.

Rook: You’d never know it to look at him. Seems friendly enough.

Davrin: As long as he likes you.

Rook: So what I’m hearing, Assan, is… gingerwort truffles for life?

Assan: (Happy squawk)

Scene continues. [5]

2 - Sarcastic: Glad I’m not a deer.

Rook: Never be a deer. Good to know.

Davrin: He’d probably leave them alone.

Rook: “Probably?”

Davrin: You and I see a deer. Maybe he sees venison soufflé?

Scene continues. [5]

3 - Stoic: He’s a perfect Grey Warden.

Rook: Sounds like the perfect soldier. And he even flies.

Davrin: Aerial cavalry. A full-grown griffon is a force of nature.

Scene continues. [5]

4 - Afraid: Unless he loses.

Rook: Deer don’t bite back. Darkspawn do.

Davrin: But darkspawn can’t fly.

Scene continues. [5]

Return to previous tree.

Davrin: Every muscle in him—every talon, every feather—honed into a killing machine. Assan’s ancestors took on Archdemons.

Asssan: (Proud squawk)

Rook: Like his name says: he’s an “arrow”.

Davrin: Half-lion, half-eagle, with the instincts of both. Griffons will always be hunters.

Rook: Just like his daddy, Davrin.

Davrin: Heh. I suppose we are our nature.

Rook: Not sure about that?

Pre-WeisshauptPost-Weisshaupt
Davrin: Most my life I’ve hunted the darker things in the world. But caring for a griffon? What do I know about that? Yet here I am.

Rook: That’s not so bad, is it?

Davrin: Not the path I expected. Makes me wonder. About Assan. His brothers and sisters. Still young. Pure.
Davrin: I was, right up until we killed Ghilan’nain’s Archdemon. Then my life’s purpose vanished, and I have to find a new one. Who knew it’d be griffons?

Rook: That’s a good thing, isn’t it?

Davrin: I want it to be. Can’t help but wonder about him, about his brothers and sisters. Still young. Pure.

Rook: You’re worried?

Davrin: I’m responsible for the future of every griffon alive. I want it to be a good one.

Pre-WeisshauptPost-Weisshaupt
Davrin: These animals live to fight—but I wonder if there’s another path for them? These animals live to fight—but I wonder if there’s another purpose for them, too?
Dialogue options:

6 - Don’t go against their nature.

Rook: I don’t know. That’s like asking a fish to crawl on land. It might work at first, but it’s not going to end well.

Davrin: Fair point. Griffons are darkspawn hunters at heart.

Rook: This one sure takes after his dad.

Scene continues. [9]

7 - Give him time.

Rook: It’s still early. Assan’s just a kid. Let him test the waters, see what shakes loose.

Davrin: You mean like a parent.

Rook: Yep.

Scene continues. [9]

8 - There is for everyone.

Rook: I’d like to think everyone can find a new path. Even griffons.

Davrin: Just wish I knew what it was.

Rook: Doesn’t every good parent?

Scene continues. [9]

9 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Davrin: “Parent’s” a scary word. I’m supposed to be his bodyguard.

Rook: What do you think you’ve been doing this whole time?

Davrin: Trying to ignore it. If I get myself killed by a hurlock, that’s on me. If it’s Assan… I just don’t want to mess it up.

Rook: I think that’s where trust comes in. That “turlum” idea you keep talking about. Trust Assan to find his way. Don’t force things.

Davrin: He’s headstrong.

Assan: (Indignant squawk)

Rook: Good thing you are, too.

Davrin: (Chuckles) Right. Thanks for the chat.
