Ancient Elven Gods
Rook, Neve, and Harding gather at the table in the library.
Neve: So. We stopped the ritual.
Harding: And Varric paid the price.
Rook: Hey. Varric made his choice to go talk with Solas. He knew the risks. We all did.
Harding: And now Solas is… gone. And we’re here, wherever here is—besides in the Fade.
Rook: Solas called it the Lighthouse.
Neve: He did? When?
Dialogue options:
- Affable: He was in the Fade. [1]
- Sarcastic: He invaded my dream. [2]
- Stoic: He was in my head. [3]
1 - Affable: He was in the Fade.
Rook: Sorry. It was while I was unconscious. Solas appeared in my dream. Harding: Really? I’m glad you’re all right. Rook: From what I saw, he’s trapped in the Fade now. Not here, but some kind of prison. [4]
2 - Sarcastic: He invaded my dream.
Rook: While I was out cold. He showed up in my dream, and he’s really mad that we stopped his ritual. Harding: Good. Rook: He’s also trapped in some kind of prison in the Fade. Not happy about that, either. [4]
3 - Stoic: He was in my head.
Rook: In my head. Solas showed up while I was out cold to gripe about us breaking his ritual. Harding: He’s mad about us destroying his ritual? Rook: Sounded like it. When the ritual went wrong, he ended up trapped in some kind of prison. [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Neve: You’re sure that wasn’t just a dream? It’s a reasonable reaction.
-
Dwarf Rook: Harding: Except that dwarves don’t dream, remember? We can’t. The Fade is the world of dreams, and we’re not connected to it. Rook: It was weird. I was standing in a place that I knew couldn’t be real. None of it made sense. Harding: You’re lucky it was just weird. Solas can kill people in dreams.
-
Non-dwarf Rook: Harding: Solas can speak with people in their dreams. Even kill them.
Personality dependent dialogue:
-
Affable Rook: He said our connection wasn’t strong enough for him to do that. He could only reach me because I bled at the ritual site when I got banged up.
-
Sarcastic Rook: I’m safe on that front. I bled a little when I got knocked out. Enough that he can gripe at me, but not enough that he can make my head explode.
-
Stoic Rook: I’m not in danger. He can only barely reach me. I bled a little when I got knocked out.
Neve: So Solas is using blood magic. Like any normal mage would to play with your mind.
Harding: But he’s not a normal mage. Like I told you, he’s an elven god.
Neve: Putting together a nice ritual doesn’t make him a god.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: Of course he’s not. [5]
- Stoic: Stop quibbling over terms. [6]
- Afraid: He is a terrifying god. [7]
- Elf: My gods were dangerous. [9]
- Mage: This isn’t normal magic. [8]
- Veil Jumper: Elven gods were dangerous. [10]
6 - Affable: Of course he’s not.
Rook: We all know he’s not a god, but it’s faster than saying “ancient elven mage” every time we talk about him. [12]
7 - Stoic: Stop quibbling over terms.
Rook: I don’t care about the philosophy. In terms of his power against ours, he’s a god. [12]
8 - Afraid: He is a terrifying god.
Rook: He nearly brought down the Veil, Neve. Can you do that? Neve: You know it’s not that simple. Rook: He may not be a prayers-and-blessings kind of god, but he’s a lot more than just a mage. [12]
9 - Elf: My gods were dangerous.
Rook: The gods of my people were incredibly powerful. I don’t mean they were powerful like a skilled mage. I mean they destroyed entire cities. They shattered mountains. So no, they might not literally be gods, but they’re a lot worse than whatever you’re thinking. [12]
10 - Mage: This isn’t normal magic.
Rook: Neve, I’m a mage. You’re a mage. Solas is more than that. That ritual was more than some Circle mage could’ve pulled off. Even more than a Tevinter magister. [12]
11 - Veil Jumper: Elven gods were dangerous.
Rook: I worked with the Veil Jumpers. We study ancient elven artifacts, and we’ve learned a lot of the history. The ancient elves were so powerful that their artifacts are still dangerous thousands of years later. And their gods? They might not literally be gods, but I can only imagine how powerful they are. [12]
12 - Scene continues.
Neve: All right. Well, we’ve stopped the ritual, and there doesn’t seem to be an immediate danger. For now. You’re certain Solas can’t use blood magic to affect your mind?
Rook: I’m not certain of anything. But we’re not out of danger.
Harding: What do you mean?
Rook: Solas had two of the other elven gods imprisoned. When he got trapped, they escaped.
Neve: So those things we saw come out of the Fade when the ritual went wild… those are…
Rook: Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain. Two of the ancient elven gods that Solas rebelled against.
Dialogue options:
- Sarcastic: They’re worse than Solas. [13]
- Stoic: They’re ours to kill. [14]
- Sad: The escape is our fault. [15]
- Afraid: They’re stronger than Solas. [16]
13 - Sarcastic: They’re worse than Solas.
Rook: Solas warned me about them being evil, which is pretty rich coming from the guy who just tried to tear down the Veil. Neve: You don’t believe him? Rook: No, that’s the problem. I do believe him. He said they were horrific tyrants. Harding: Tyrants so powerful elven history remembers them as gods. [17]
14 - Stoic: They’re ours to kill.
Rook: They’re our next target. Neve: So we set our sights on a pair of elven gods. Like it’s easy? Rook: Who else is gonna do it? If they’re loose, they need killing. Harding: They were evil tyrants who enslaved their people. We need to stop them. [17]
15 - Sad: The escape is our fault.
Rook: They’re free because of us. Harding: They’re free because of Solas. Neve: Lace is right. If we hadn’t stopped that ritual, countless people would be dead. Rook: I know. But still. They’re out there now. Harding: Okay. Then we find them and we stop them. [17]
16 - Afraid: They’re stronger than Solas.
Rook: When I talked with Solas, he was scared of them. He said they were horrific tyrants. Harding: Tyrants so powerful elven history remembers them as gods. [17]
17 - Scene continues.
Rook: Solas says Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain drew on the blight for power and became corrupted. That was when he imprisoned them.
Neve: So instead of one… god… running around, we have two. And they’re not just powerful, they’re blighted.
Harding: We need to get out there and stop them.
Choice dependent dialogue:
- Took Harding to disrupt the ritual [18]
- Took Neve to disrupt the ritual [19]
18 - Took Harding to disrupt the ritual
Neve: Just like that? Without Varric? And you’re still getting back on your feet. Harding: I’m fine. We can’t just sit here and do nothing! Neve: We need to investigate. Figure out what we’re dealing with before we rush in and make things worse. [20]
19 - Took Neve to disrupt the ritual
Neve: Just like that? We’re down a man, without Varric. We can’t just rush in. Harding: I know you’re hurt, Neve, but the rest of us need to do something. Neve: I’ll be ready to fight when it’s time. But we need to investigate, then figure out what we’re dealing with. [20]
20 - Scene continues.
Harding: And how many more people will get hurt—get killed—while we spend time investigating?
Dialogue options:
-
Harding’s right. [21]
+ Harding Approves
- Neve Disapproves -
Neve’s right. [22]
+ Neve Approves
- Harding Disapproves
21 - Harding’s right.
Rook: If Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are worse than Solas, we don’t have time to waste. We need to act now. Neve: We don’t know what they can do or what they want. We don’t even know if Solas is telling the truth. Rook: I’m not saying we go in blind, but this time, if we see a shot, we take it. Neve: All right. The last place we saw them was the ritual site. Harding: The eluvian took us here from the ritual site, instead of back to Minrathous. Neve: Then let’s hope it takes us back. [23]
22 - Neve’s right.
Rook: If Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are worse than Solas, we can’t go in blind. We need to know what they can do and what they want. Harding: But we only have Solas’s word about all of this. Neve: Then let’s go investigate for ourselves. We find out what we’re dealing with, and then we take our shot. Harding: Fine. The eluvian led us here, instead of back to Minrathous. Neve: Let’s hope it goes back to the ritual site. Maybe we can find some clues at the scene of the crime. [23]
23 - Scene continues.
Rook: [Harding/Neve], are you okay to go?
-
Took Harding to disrupt the ritual: Harding: I’m not going to sit back while elven gods destroy the world because I have a headache.
-
Took Neve to disrupt the ritual: Neve: It’s a headache. I’ve worked with worse.
Rook: All right, then. Let’s get back to the ritual site.
Harding: The eluvian has its own special room. It’s just down the stairs.
Through The Eluvian
The party walks up the the eluvian.
Neve: For all we know, there’s a dozen demons waiting on the other side of that eluvian.
1 - Took Harding to disrupt the ritual Harding: If it even takes us back to Arlathan… (Winces) Rook: Harding, you sure you’re up for this? Harding: I’m fine. Neve: Well then. [3]
2 - Took Neve to disrupt the ritual Neve: (Winces) Harding: If it even takes us back to Arlathan… Rook: Neve, you sure you’re up for this? Neve: Don’t worry about me. [3]
Neve: Shall we?
Rook: Let’s do this.
They walk through the eluvian and emerge in Arlathan Forest.
Neve: It’s quiet? Well, isn’t that a surprise.
Harding: There’s the ritual site. But… if the gods really did get out, they’re not here anymore.
The begin walking.
Rook: Right. Let’s take a look around, and see if we can find—
Neve points, and an elf runs out of the forest holding some kind of magical artifact. Two more follow, chased by some kind of construct.
Strife: Shut it down!
Irelin: I’m trying! It’s not working. I can’t contain it!
The construct winds up to attack their companion. Strife knocks the artifact out of Irelin’s hands with his sword, and the construct falls. The party approaches.
4 - Veil Jumper Rook → As a Veil Jumper, you’ve worked with Strife and Irelin before. Rook: Strife? Irelin? Strife: What are you doing back in Arlathan? Rook: Long story. Strife: Isn’t it always with you? And did I hear you’re going by “Rook” now? Rook: Neve, this is Strife and Irelin. They’re Veil Jumpers, like me. Experts in elven magic. I worked with them before Harding and Varric recruited me. [6]
5 - Non-Veil Jumper Rook Harding: Strife? Irelin? It’s me, Lace Harding. Strife: Harding? What are you doing back in Arlathan? Harding: It’s complicated. Strife: I can see that. Harding: Rook, Neve, this is Strife and Irelin. Varric and I met them when we first started hunting down Solas. They’re Veil Jumpers, experts in ancient elven magic. [6]
Irelin: Hardly “experts.” I should have been able to shut that artifact down.
She looks at the elf sitting nearby.
Irelin: I’m sorry, Tarith.
Strife: It’s not your fault. Since the sky ripped open, the magic’s been surging. Bunch of artifacts that’d been dormant for centuries started coming alive. This is because of Fen’Harel’s—sorry, Solas’s ritual, isn’t it?
-
Veil Jumper Rook: Strife: Thought you were supposed to stop him. Or did unforeseen complications lead to unforeseen consequences? Again.
-
Non-Veil Jumper Rook: Strife: You all were supposed to stop him.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: We tried. [7]
- Sarcastic: We did, sort of. [8]
- Stoic: Don’t blame us. [9]
- Angry (Veil Jumper Rook): Still mad about the map? [10]
7 - Affable: We tried.
Rook: We found Solas and stopped his ritual. But things took a turn. Neve: The magic went wild. Solas was dragged into the Fade. Into some kind of prison. Harding: But when he went in, something—or someone—else got out. Rook: Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain. Supposedly. Strife: Mythal’enaste. Irelin: The return of our gods. The Evanuris. Strife: If those two are back out in the world… it explains a lot. Neve: Like what? Irelin: Artifacts that have been dormant for centuries are awakening. Something that would need a source of tremendous magical energy. Like two of our Old Gods. [11]
8 - Sarcastic: We did, sort of.
Rook: We did stop him! The sky’s not pulling itself apart anymore, is it? Strife: But? But it didn’t go as cleanly as we hoped. Solas got pulled into the Fade, and two somethings got pulled out.
- Elf Rook: Or someones, I mean. Two of the Evanuris. Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain.
- Non-elf Rook: Or someones, I mean. Two of the evil elven gods. Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain.
Irelin: Mythal’enaste… Strife: The elven gods of old. The Evanuris. Irelin: If they truly have returned… Strife: Then things just got a whole lot worse. [11]
9 - Stoic: Don’t blame us.
Rook: Didn’t see you volunteering. We put our lives on the line to stop Solas, and we stopped him. Harding (if Harding went into the ritual): And we’ve got the scars to prove it. Neve (if Neve went into the ritual): Not without cost. Rook: Sky’s not ripping itself apart anymore, is it? Strife: All right, you stopped Solas. So why is Arlathan neck-deep in wild magic? Neve: Solas was dragged into the Fade when we interrupted his ritual. But something else got out. Rook: Someone else… supposedly. Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain. Irelin: Mythal’enaste.. Two of the elven gods of old. The Evanuris. Strife: Shit. If they’re back in the world, that explains a lot. [11]
10 - Angry: Still mad about the map?
Rook: Will you let it go? Yes, the map was destroyed, but everyone walked out of there alive. Strife: I told you to wait. Rook: If I’d waited for you to make a copy, people would have died. Strife: So you ran off on your own, and now we’ve lost the only way of navigating back to that site. We lost the work put into it. Everything we uncovered, and everything we hadn’t. Irelin: (Sighs) Solas’s ritual. You stopped it? Rook: Sky’s not ripping itself apart anymore, is it? Strife: All right, you stopped Solas. So why is Arlathan neck-deep in wild magic? Neve: Solas was dragged into the Fade when we interrupted his ritual. But something else got out. Rook: Someone else… supposedly. Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain. Irelin: Mythal’enaste.. Two of the elven gods of old. The Evanuris. Strife: Shit. If they’re back in the world, that explains a lot. [11]
Scene continues.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: What about the gods? [12]
- Sarcastic: Oh great. The gods are real. [13]
- Stoic: So what’s next? [14]
12 - Affable: What about the gods?
Rook: Anything you can tell us about these gods? Strife: Solas might be a bastard, but compared to the Evanuris? Let’s just say they weren’t known for being kind rulers. [15]
13 - Sarcastic: Oh great. The gods are real.
Rook: I was really hoping the Dread Wolf was lying to us about all of this. Strife: He’s the god of lies, but… some things are sacrosanct. Even to him. He might be a bastard, but he’s a damned sight better than the Evanuris. [15]
14 - Stoic: So what’s next?
Rook: So Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are loose. Which means what? Strife: You thought Solas was bad? He’s a bit of a bastard, true. But next to them? Let’s just say they weren’t known for their kindness. [15]
15 - Scene continues.
Irelin: There’s a reason Solas led a rebellion against the Evanuris. And a reason he imprisoned them.
Strife: But now they’ve escaped…
Strife (Veil Jumper Rook): Of all the ancient things to unearth, of course it had to be two of the Evanuris, and of course it had to be you that unearthed them.
Tarith: (Groans in pain)
Irelin: Tarith’s in bad shape. We need to get him back to the camp.
Strife: We’ve still got dozens of Veil Jumpers unaccounted for.
Rook: How can we help?
Irelin: We need to find Bellara Lutare. She’s the best there is at working with our ancient artifacts.
Strife: And also at blowing them up.
Irelin: She was off looking for another artifact before this ritual shook everything loose. If anyone can get a handle on all this wild magic—and the artifacts it’s setting off—it’ll be her.
Choice dependent dialogue:
16 - Took Harding to disrupt the ritual Harding: Right. Then you two get your friend back to your camp, and we’ll… (Grunts in pain)… we’ll find Bellara.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: Harding, help the Veil jumpers. [18]
- Stoic: Harding, stay here. [19]
- Sad: Harding, you’re still injured. [20]
18 - Affable: Harding, help the Veil jumpers. Rook: Harding, I need you to stay with Strife and Irelin, all right? Harding: What? No. I’m coming with you. Rook: You’re a great shot, Harding. You can help the Veil Jumpers here. They need you. Harding: (Sighs) Fine. Since they need me. [24]
19 - Stoic: Harding, stay here. Rook: Harding, I need you to stay with the Veil Jumpers. Neve and I can handle this. Harding: I’m fine! Rook: No, you’re not. Until you’ve recovered from your injuries, you’re a liability. Harding: Fine. [24]
20 - Sad: Harding, you’re still injured. Rook: Harding, you’re injured. Stay here with the Veil Jumpers. Harding: I can help. Rook: I know you want to, but we don’t know what we’ll face out there, and you’re in no condition to fight. Harding: Okay, fine. I’ll stay. [24]
17 - Took Neve to disrupt the ritual Neve: Right. You get your friend back to your camp, and… (Grunts in pain)… we’ll find Bellara.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: Neve, help the Veil jumpers. [21]
- Stoic: Neve, stay here. [22]
- Sad: Neve, you’re still injured. [23]
21 - Affable: Neve, help the Veil jumpers. Rook: Neve, I need you to stay with Strife and Irelin, all right? Neve: I’m fine. Rook: You’re the best detective in Minrathous. You can help the Veil Jumpers here—if trouble shows up, they could use your skills. Neve: Fair enough. [24]
22 - Stoic: Neve, stay here. Rook: Stay with the Veil Jumpers. Harding and I can handle this. Neve: Is that so? Rook: That’s so. If you’re not at full strength, you’re a liability we can’t afford. Neve: Fine. Your call. [24]
23 - Sad: Neve, you’re still injured. Rook: Neve, you’re injured. Stay here with the Veil Jumpers. Neve: It’s a headache. I’ll be fine. Rook: I know you want to help, but we don’t know what we’ll face out there and you’re in no condition to fight. Neve: All right. Just watch your backs. [24]
24 - Scene continues.
Irelin: We’ll meet you back at the Veil Jumper camp. It’s just south of here.
Strife: Bellara’s out near some elven ruins to the west. Least she was, three days ago. I’d start your search there.
Irelin: Good luck, Rook. And thank you.
