A Missing Contact

Varric: I knew him as Solas. Smart, thoughtful, loved to hear himself talk. But long ago, he had a different name: Fen’Harel, the Dread Wolf. Ancient elven god of lies, or heroic rebel against tyranny, depending on which story you believe. In his desperate fight against the corrupt elven gods, Solas imprisoned them… creating a Veil that split our world from the raw magic of the Fade. He had won… but the Veil cost the elves everything: their magic, their freedom, even their immortality. Now Solas wants to tear down that Veil and undo the damage he caused… even if that means our world has to burn. Somebody’s gotta stop him… and that’s where you come in.

Complete the character creator.

Varric: So, where were we? Oh, right. Him. Our best plan is to stop the Dread Wolf before he can perform his ritual. After following his trail across half the known world…we’ve finally tracked him to Minrathous, capital of the Tevinter Imperium. But to find the Dread Wolf in a city this big… we need a local expert. So, naturally, our story begins where all great stories begin: with the seediest bar in town, and a missing contact.

The scene cuts to rainy Minrathous. A body is flung down the steps of a bar, leaving the door open to reveal Rook inside, facing down a group of Venatori. The bartender sits on the counter.

Rook: Let’s try this again: Where’s Neve Gallus?

Bartender: You think you can come into my bar and make demands?

Dialogue options:
  • I’ll do more than demand.
(Beat down the entire room to get the information.)
  • Let’s talk this out.
(Try to convince the bar owner to give the information.)

Rook: Neve Gallus is my only shot at finding the Dread Wolf. I’m not leaving until I know where she is. Be ready to talk by the time I get to you.

Bartender: Oh darling, you’re adorable.

Rook fights the Ventori.

Bartender: Not enough gold in the world for this…

Rook: Varric, now!

The bartender climbs off the counter and ties to escape, but an arrow flies across the room, pinning her to the wall.

Varric: Meet Bianca. She’d like you to stay awhile.

Rook finishes off the Venatori before leaping over the counter, staring down the bartender.

Rook: Neve Gallus.

Bartender: Dumat Plaza! The Venatori cultists took her to Dumat Plaza…

The bartender tries to stab them, but Rook headbutts her unconcious.

Rook: Thanks.

Rook climbs back over the bar, and Varric walks up with some mugs.

Rook: Your friend Neve Gallus is at Dumat Plaza.

Varric: I heard. That’s why you’re my second-in-command. Although for the record, there was probably an easier way to do that than fighting an entire bar.

Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.
Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: I had you on my side.

Rook: What’d I have to worry about? You were there watching my back.

Varric: Yeah, yeah.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Sarcastic: Okay, but it worked though.

Rook: See, you say that… but we do have Neve’s location now, so…

Varric: Don’t get cocky. Scene continues. [4]

3 - Stoic: Whatever works.

Rook: It got us Neve’s location.

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

They drink for a moment, and Rook puts down their mug.

Rook: Come on, Harding will be worried.

Varric: All right, break’s over.

Varric finishes his drink, and they head out of the bar.

Rook: I hope Neve’s as good at finding people as you claim.

Varric: She’s the best damn detective I’ve ever met. if she says she’s got a lead on Solas, I believe her.

The Streets of Minrathous

Rook and Varric enter the streets of Minrathous. The Archon’s Palace floats overhead, with spotlights scanning the city.

Varric: The Archon’s Palace! Something must have gotten them riled up.

Rook: Should we be in more of a hurry to get out of here?

Varric: We don’t want to look conspicuous. Just get out of here, nice and casual, find Neve Gallus, and stop Solas.

They pass beggar by the stairs.

Vagabond: Spare a coin, please?

If the PC gives them coin:
Vagabond: Andraste bless you.

They continue walking.

Rook: You think you can talk him down before he starts his ritual?

Varric: That ritual is going to tear down the Veil—the only thing separating us from the Fade and an endless number of demons. I have to talk him down.

They pass by a man loading a cart, waiting to be able to pass.

Resident: Go on, then.

They continue, but one of the spotlights from the palace stops nearby.

Tevinter Guard Announcer: (Amplifier) You there! Halt!

Citizen: Wait! But I didn’t do anything!

Varric and Rook duck around a corner.

Varric: get down!

Rook: Are they after us? Is it because of the bar?

Varric: Word travels fast in Minrathous.

The woman cowers on the ground.

Rook: We gotta help her.

Varric stops them.

Varric: We don’t have time to get arrested, especially if—

A large rift opens up in the sky over the Palace. People start to run.

Varric: Aw, crap.

Rook: We’re too late!

Varric: the ritual’s started. but if we hurry, we can still stop Solas before it finishes. Let’s go.

Varric takes off.

Varric: Harding’s this way. She’ll get us to Dumat Plaza, then Neve will get us to Solas.

Rook: Watch out!

Demons run across the road, causing destruction and killing people as they go.

Rook: Is Solas summoning demons on purpose?

Varric: My guess is the Veil is weakening, and they’re slipping through the cracks.

Rook: And when the Veil comes down completely?

They continue, and the bridge they were about to cross blows up. A huge demon emerges, but Varric pulls Rook out of the way.

Varric: Then the whole world is going to look a lot like this.

The palace begins to fire on the city, taking down the demon. Varric leads Rook down an alleyway.

Varric: Come on, this way! It should get us to Harding!

Rook leaps over a fence, and they find Harding protecting some civilians.

Resident: (Gasps in fear)

Harding shoots a demon that was flying at them.

Harding: You’re safe now. Get inside and lock the doors, quick as you can, okay?

Resident: Thank you, miss.

They run off as Varric and Rook approach.

Varric: Harding. You all right?

Harding: I’ve been doing what I can to help. The ritual must be weakening the veil. There are a lot of scared people out here.

Varric: And a lot of demons. Haven’t seen this many come through the Fade in years.

Harding: What about you two? Are you okay?

Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: Never better.

Rook: Fought some demons, and the Archon’s palace took a few shots at us. Nothing we couldn’t handle.

Varric: Speak for yourself.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Afraid: A little shaky.

Rook: That was a lot of demons. The Archon’s palace was taking shots at us, too.

Varric: Gets the blood pumping.

Rook: Sure, lets go with that.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Stoic: In a hurry.

Rook: We’re good—but we need to move.

Varric: Agreed. Solas isn’t waiting, and neither should we.

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

Rook: have you got my gear?

Harding: Right over there.

She gestures to a bag and weapon.

Harding: Where’s Neve Gallus? Wasn’t she at the meeting point?

Rook: The Venatori got to her first. They grabbed her before we arrived and paid off the bar owner to keep it quiet.

Varric: I’m not surprised our detective did something to piss off a cult of murderous blood mages, but their timing stinks. The bar owner said the Venatori took Neve to Dumat Plaza. Could you get us there, Harding?

Shadow DragonNon-Shadow Dragon
Harding: Rook, you’re with the Shadow Dragons. I figured you’d know Minrathous better than I do.

Rook: Sure, but Minrathous is huge, and this is nowhere near my neighborhood. I can try…

Harding: Don’t worry. Scouting’s my specialty. Follow me.
Harding: Not a problem. I saw Dumat Plaza while I was scouting the area… and it was crawling with Venatori. Follow me.

A rift opens over them, and Varric readies Bianca.

Varric: Eyes up! We’ve got company!

Harding: Demons! Here they come!

Find Neve Gallus

They defeat the demons.

Harding: I think that’s the last of them.

Varric: Good. Let’s get to Dumat Plaza and find Neve.

Rook backtracks the way they came.

Templar Captain: (Amplifier) Remain in your homes. Imperial forces are containing the demons.

Varric: The Archon’s Palace. It floats over the city with a big cannon pointed down at its own people.

They begin to head down the road.

Varric: You two all right? Patch yourselves up, if you need it.

Rook: I don’t get it. If Solas tears down the Veil, doesn’t that destroy everything?

Harding: Solas always talked about how beautiful the ancient world was.

Varric: That world existed before the Veil, and he wants to bring it back.

Harding: Even if his ritual kills us all in the process.

Tevinter Guard Announcer: (Amplifier) You are in violation of Imperial order!

They turn a corner and spot a barrier in the distance getting fired on by the Archon’s Palace.

Harding: Oh no. I think that’s Dumat Plaza!

Varric: Crap. let’s move!

They’re attaked by Venatori.

Venatori: They’re the ones who made trouble at the bar!

Harding: Venatori cultists!

Venatori: Hold it closed! Reinforcements should be here soon!

Varric: I hate these assholes.

Varric: Looks like the Venatori put up a barrier to block the way.

Rook destroys the crystals to take down the barrier, revealing more Venatori to fight.

  • Venatori: More intruders!
  • Venatori: Avenge out fallen brethren!

Varric: Friendly bunch of cultists, aren’t they?

Origin dependent dialogue:
Rook: The Crows have taken contracts on them. Nasty bastards.

Varric: Yep, that’s them.

Rook finishes off the Ventori.

Templar Captain: (Amplifier) All citizens must remain indoors until the magical disturbance is fully contained.

They come across a destroyed path.

Varric: Come on. Guess we’re sliding down.

At the bottom of the slope, a bunch of Venatori attack.

  • Venatori: They’re allies of Neve Gallus! Kill them all!
  • Venatori: Varric Tethras!
  • Venatori: The Venatori own these streets!
  • Venatori: Venatori! Take your revenge!

Harding: Another barrier. But it looks like Neve’s work, not the Venatori.

Rook walks up the barrier, but it disappears as they lift their hand to it. A mage stand on the other side, surrounded by dead Venatori.

Neve: Varric, Harding. Not the worst timing.

Harding: Neve! It’s so good to see you. We thought the Venatori had kidnapped you.

Neve plucks her staff from one of the corpses and they begin to walk.

Neve: They thought the same thing. A lot of Venatori in this city have reason to hate me. Figured I’d play along, find out who wanted to settle the score this time. Then the sky started raining demons. So I’m back on the job.

Varric: Appreciate it. Rook, this is Neve Gallus, our local expert. She’s gonna help us find Solas.

Shadow DragonNon-Shadow Dragon
Varric: Neve, meet Rook. Both of you have done some work for the Shadow Dragons.

Neve: Isn’t that a coincidence.

Varric: Some old friends said if I was working in Tevinter, the Shadow Dragons are worth trusting.
Varric: Neve, meet Rook. Harding and I found [them] a while back. Thought we could use an expert on trouble.

Neve: Rook. Like the chess piece?

Varric: One of the strongest pieces on the board, but [they] tend to think in straight lines.
Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: You rescued yourself, I see.

Rook: We came prepared for a rescue. Looks like you were way ahead of us.

Neve: A rescue? You’re sweet.

Varric: We couldn’t pass up a chance to punch the Venatori.

Harding: You said you had a lead?

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Sarcastic: Nice job with the Venatori.

Rook: Nice to meet you. Based on the Venatori, you’ve got excellent taste in enemies. Neve: I do my best.

Varric: I figured you two might bond over that.

Harding: You said you had a lead?

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Stoic: We need information.

Rook: We haven’t got a lot of time. Varric said you had a lead on Solas?

Neve: You get right to the point.

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

A tremor runs through the city, shaking the buildings.

Neve: I haven’t seen Solas in person, but I did find hints of old magic. Similar to what’ you’d get in elven ruins. I traced it to a building beneath Our Lady of Victory. That’s where your man is hiding.

Varric: Then let’s go—before this ritual he’s doing gets any worse.

Neve: Worse? This ritual is already drawing more power than I’d expect from a dozen mages. You told me he was working alone.

Varric: I also told you he was an ancient elven god.

Neve: An elven god. Well, whatever he is, he’s causing trouble in my city. Let’s go.

They head towards the statue in the distance.

Templar Captain: (Amplifier) All citizens in the Canal District must remain in their homes.

The Dread Wolf’s Lair

Rook: So if we do catch Solas—or the Dread Wolf, whatever he calls himself—what’s the plan?

Varric: he wants to bring down the Veil. Hopefully that ritual takes his full attention.

They continue towards the statue and a demon runs across their path.

Rook: So we catch him while he’s doing his ritual, so he can’t fight us?

Varric: That’s the hope. If it comes to a straight up fight, we’re dead.

The come across a zipline that looks like the only way across.

Harding: We can slide down the line to get across.

They take the zipline. More demons fly around them.

Varric: I’m getting too old for this.

Never: There. That’s the building I tracked Solas to.

Harding: Looks like the Venatori also found it. And then the demons found them!

They head towards the building, flighting more demons.

Templar Captain: (Amplifier) By order of the Imperium, you must surrender immediately.

Neve: Enchantment on the entrance. I can get it.

Rook wanders away.

Harding: We should head back. Solas is probably inside.

They enter the hideout, which appears to be a dimly lit cave.

Rook: So this is the Dread Wolf’s Hideout?

Varric: One of them, at least. Not sure how long he’s been here.

Rook: Some of this looks ancient.

Varric: Solas has been around longer than Minrathous itself.

They pass a stack of chains.

Neve: Broken chains. Solas was freeing slaves.

Varric: Solas hates slavery. One of the few things we actually agreed on.

Harding: He said the other elven gods were tyrants who oppressed his people. He was trying to help them.

They continue into another room, where light is coming from the other side of the far wall. Rook walks up to look through it.

Varric: What do you see?

Rook: No sign of Solas. Just a big glowing window, or mirror, or something.

Varric: Well that sounds ominous.

They pass by a mural.

Rook: Ancient elves doing something to… a dragon, I think?

Neve: Yeah. Trying to control it, maybe?

Varric: Solas said the other elven gods were evil. If they were binding dragons, he was right about that much, at least.

The party enters another room, and demons spawn near the door on the other side.

Harding: More demons.

They fight and defeat the demons.

If Rook checks the door:
Harding: Locked. There must be another way to open it. Let’s look around.

Neve: Air’s full of magic. Solas used a lot of power for something.

They begin to look around.

Rook: Solas, the Dread Wolf, Fen’Harel… he’s got lots of names.

Varric: I always called him Chuckles.

Checked the door before pulling the leverDid not check the door before pulling the level
Harding: Nice work!

Varric: Let’s see what’s on the other side.
Harding: It sounds like that opened something below.

Neve: Then let’s have a look.

They walk through.

Neve: This the big glowing window you saw earlier, Rook?

Veil JumperNon-Veil Jumper
Rook: I think it’s an eluvian. I’ve seen a few in Arlathan Forest. They’re elven.Harding: It’s called an eluvian. They’re elven, and very old.

Varric: It acts like a doorway from one place to another. Solas uses them to get around quickly.

Harding: He must have gone through it.

They enter the eluvian and emerge in a forest.

Varric: Well, we’re not in Minrathous anymore.

Harding: I know these trees. This is Arlathan forest.

Neve: And there’s your ritual. The power involved—I’ve never seen anything like it.

A massive tear in the Veil hangs over a ritual site full of ancient elven statues. The ground begins to shake, and demons start to appear.

Harding: The tremors are getting worse!

Neve: And we’ve got demons.

They continue into the forest, fighting demons as they go.

Rook: And I thought the demons were bad in Minrathous.

Neve: The Fade’s a mess this close to the ritual. No telling what could come through.

The ground shakes again.

Rook: Does it feel like the tremors are getting worse?

Varric: Keep moving and try not to think about it.

They continue on, flighting more demons. Another tremor hits.

Harding: We get tremors every time one of those big crystals at the ritual site lights up.

Neve: not many of them left to light. Might want to hurry.

The party climbs some stairs.

Neve: Almost there.

More demons spring up along the path.

Neve: Quite a few of them, aren’t there?

Varric: Nothing compared to how many we’ll get if Solas finishes his ritual.

A pride demon appears from a flash of lighting.

  • Neve: We have to stop this demon quickly!
  • Harding: Watch the lightning!

Neve: How’d a demon this large get through the Veil?

Varric: It’s a pride demon! Damn thing probably sensed Solas’s ego!

They defeat the pride demon.

Harding: Everyone all right?

Rook: Good enough. Let’s get to Solas.

Ritual, Interrupted

They approach the ritual, and more demons appear. Neve and Hrading fight them off as Varric puts Bianca away.

Varric: All right. I’ll take it from here.

Neve: Are you sure?

Varric: Positive. You three just keep the demons off me while I talk to him.

Harding: Varric, Solas isn’t going to stop just because an old friend asks nicely.

Varric: Solas needs someone to sell him another option, to help him justify changing his mind.

Dialogue options:

1 - This is a mistake.

Rook: Come on, Varric. We didn’t come all this way just to talk to him.

Varric: He was my friend, Rook. I’ve gotta try to reach him. And if he won’t listen to me… then he’ll hear from Bianca.

Scene continues. [3]

2 - You can do it.

Rook: We’ve got your back. If anyone can get through to him, you can.

Varric: Thanks, Rook. Whatever else he is, he’s my friend. And if he won’t listen to me… then he’ll hear from Bianca.

Scene continues. [3]

3 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

A pillar falls nearby and more demons begin to swarm.

Harding: More demons.

Varric: Take care of the team for me.

Varric walks away to where Solas is performing the ritual. Rook continues to fight the demons.

Varric: Hey, Chuckles. Hope I’m not interrupting.

Solas turns and looks surprised for a moment. The scene cuts back to Rook’s fighting.

Rook: All right, let’s buy him some time.

Harding: I hope Varric is getting through to Solas.

Rook: He better talk fast. We can’t hold these demons off forever!

They fight off some demons, and their attention turns back to Varric and Solas.

Solas: The Veil is a wound inflicted upon this world. It must be healed.

Solas returns to the ritual, dagger in hand.

Varric: By drowning the world in demons?

Solas: I have taken precautions to minimize the damage, Varric.

Varric: Minimize the… People are dying right now! You need to listen.

Varric readies Bianca.

Varric: Please.

Solas turns to face him, causing Bianca to explode in a flash of magic.

Solas: People are always dying. It is what they do.

He turns back to the ritual again.

Rook: Shit! We need a better plan.

Harding readies her bow.

Harding: Do you want me to take the shot?

Neve: Won’t work. He’s too powerful.

Rook: What if we disrupt the ritual?

Harding: How?

Rook: See those statues? If we break the scaffolding, the whole thing’ll come down on Solas.

Neve: It’s risky. Interrupting a ritual of this scale will have consequences.

Harding: And what about the demons? Varric needs us to hold them off.

Rook begins to climb.

Rook: Right. You two stay here. I’ll bring down the statue.

Neve: What? No. Stepping into all that raw magic is suicide.

Harding: The storm could tear you apart!

Rook: Anyone got a better idea?

Harding: Fine. But you’ll need backup. I’m with you.

Neve: I’m a mage. I’ll go.

Harding: Either way, someone needs to stay back and deal with the demons.

Dialogue options:

4 - Harding, with me.

Rook: Let’s go Harding. Neve, keep the demons off us.

Neve: You got it. [6]

5 - Neve, with me.

Rook: Let’s go, Neve. Harding, keep the demons busy.

Harding: Good luck. [6]

6 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

Rook takes off with their chosen party member and begins to make their way across the ritual site.

(Solas and Varric are arguing inaudibly)

Varric: So how is this time gonna work out any better? Can you tell me that?

Solas: I understand your hesitance, but what I do now must be done, despite it being past your comprehension.

Varric: I’m not saying you’re evil. But if you really believed in what you were doing, you’d be able to give me a straight answer.

Solas: You would rather cast aspersions than admit that this is mine to solve.

Varric: C’mon, Chuckles. Who are you trying to convince here? Me, or yourself?

Rook reaches the scaffolding.

Rook: This is it!

Took Harding to disrupt the ritualTook Neve to disrupt the ritual
Harding: Bring down that scaffolding!Neve: We need to bring down the scaffolding!

Rook attacks the scaffolding, and it falls.

Varric: Why? Why tear down the Veil, knowing all the lives it’ll cost?

Solas: We shared a journey years ago. Do you believe I would do this this if there were some other, better option?

Harding/Neve: The pillar’s weak but—

Rook: It isn’t falling! We need to push it!

Took Harding to disrupt the ritualTook Neve to disrupt the ritual
Harding: I’m with you!Neve: Right!

Rook: Together! Now!

Solas: You came a long way and made a valiant effort, Varric, but this story does not end with my downfall.

Rook: Push!

They push the scaffolding, and the statues begin to fall.

Solas: No. No! No!

Solas stops one of the statues from falling, destroying it as he knocks it aside. Varric rushes him for the dagger, and they struggle for a moment as Rook heads towards them. Solas stabs Varric and turns away.

Rook: Varric.

Rook rushes over to where Varric has fallen down the stairs.

Rook: Varric… Varric!

Rook: Oh, no, no, no.

They look around for their companions.

Took Harding to disrupt the ritualTook Neve to disrupt the ritual
Rook: Harding!Rook: Neve!

Behind Solas, the silhouettes of Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain appear, there is a blast that knocks Rook back, and the scene goes black. Rook comes to as Harding drags them away, and Neve drags Varric behind them. They make it back to the eluvian, Rook finds their head bloodied, and they pass out.

Consequences

Solas: You have no idea what you have done.

Rook comes to in an unrecognizable place that appears to be in ruins.

Rook: Solas?

Rook: (Soft gasp)

Solas walks up behind them.

Rook: I know what I did. I stopped you from destroying the world.

Solas: I was not destroying the world.

The ground shifts, pushing Rook away from Solas and creating a rift between them.

Solas: When you disrupted my ritual, the magical energies pulled me here, into the Fade.

Rook: Okay, that’s why you’re here. But why am I here?

Solas: Your physical body is unconscious, but you shed a few drops of blood at the ritual site, enough for a tenuous connection.

Rook: Blood magic?

Solas: Firstly, I abhor the use of blood magic. Secondly, had I the power to control you, I would have already have used it.

Solas appears behind Rook again.

Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: I’d like to wake up.

Rook: So all I have to do to get away from you is wake up?

Solas: And how much experience do you have willing yourself from sleep to wakefulness?

Rook: Can’t be that hard.

Solas: While you practice, perhaps you’d like to hear about the consequences of your actions.

Rook: Meaning?

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Stoic: Fine. Talk.

Rook: All right. You brought me here to talk. What are we talking about?

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Angry: This is a trick!

Rook: Get out of my head!

Solas: As I said—

Rook: Out!

Solas: I do not want to be here any more than you do! But your actions have set events in motion, and I would not have your ignorance on my conscience!

Rook: What are you talking about?

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

Solas: The Evanuris. Or as you would call them, the “elven gods.” The creatures that escaped. In ancient times, they rules the elves, but that was not enough, They sought not just to be obeyed, but to be worshipped. When I rebelled, they drew on the horrific magic of the blight, corrupting all they saw until I trapped them. Thanks to you, though, I am now trapped, and the blighted “elven gods” walk free.

Dialogue options:

5 - Affable: Why should I believe you?

Rook: How am I supposed to trust anything you’re saying?

Solas: You saw them escape from my prison.

Rook: I also saw you bringing down the Veil.

Scene continues. [8]

6 - Sarcastic: Sure. You’re the hero.

Rook: Right. You were innocently doing nothing when we came along.

Solas: The prison in which I had trapped them had begun to crumble. I was moving them to another—

Rook: So you weren’t tearing down the Veil and drowning the world in demons and wild magic?

Scene continues. [8]

7 - Stoic: You let them out.

Rook: Thanks to me? I wasn’t the one performing a big ritual to free them.

Solas: Free them? My mortal enemies? I was ensuring that they would never escape their prison.

Rook: You were tearing down the Veil.

Scene continues. [8]

8 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

Solas: I had a plan.

Rook: Varric always said you’d have a big explanation for why none of this was your fault.

Solas: Varric.

Rook: Yeah. He said that’s your style. Never quite lies, clever half-truths that let you convince yourself you’re doing the right thing. He tried to talk to you anyway… and now he’s hurt.

Solas: Varric is… quite practiced at shading the truth himself.

Rook: So those things that got out. you said they were gods?

The ground shifts again, and Rook almost loses their balance.

Solas: They said were gods. Blighted, tyrannical, sadistic gods. It took all my power to imprison them millennia ago. But I am certain you will be fine.

Dialogue options:

9 - Sarcastic: Sarcasm, really?

Rook: That’s really helpful. What are you, the elven god of sarcasm?

Solas: Lies, treachery, and rebellion, depending on the story. And how could I help? I do not have my ritual dagger. I cannot access my network of mirrors to travel from the Lighthouse to anywhere in the world. All I can offer is what I know.

Rook: Helpful advice from the elven god of, and I’m quoting you here, “lies, treachery, and rebellion.”

Solas: Depending on the story.

Scene continues. [13]

10 - Stoic: Damn right we will.

Rook: We stopped you. We’ll stop them.

Solas: I had a ritual dagger of pure lyrium. My network of mirrors could take me from the Lighthouse across the world in moments. Right now, you seem to have neither. Do you intend to knock over a statue during their ritual?

Rook: Well, I don’t intend to take advice from the elven god of lies.

Solas: Quite right.

Scene continues. [13]

11 - Afraid: Okay, now I’m worried.

Rook: How bad are we talking, here?

Solas: Their power outstripped my own even before they embraced the corruption of the blight.

Rook: But you did imprison them.

Solas: Through trickery. I also had a ritual dagger of pure lyrium, and a network of mirrors to take me from the Lighthouse across the world.

Rook: I don’t have either of those.

Solas: Well, then. I expect you will be busy.

Scene continues. [13]

12 - Angry: This is your fault!

Rook: Your ritual let the gods loose! You don’t get to sit back and look smug!

Solas: What else could I possibly do? I do not have my ritual dagger. I do not have the network of mirrors that took me from the lighthouse across the world. I have nothing, as the gods threaten this world again! All because you disrupted my ritual.

Rook: You mean when I stopped you from covering the world with demons?

Solas: You will soon see what I was trying to prevent.

Scene continues. [13]

13 - Scene continues.
Back to previous tree.

Solas: Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are your problem to solve. This is your responsibility now.

Wake-Up Call

There are echoes of the ritual as Rook wakes up thrashing.

Varric: Why? Why tear down the Veil?
Varric: You need to listen.
Harding: Do you want me to take the shot?
Solas: No. No! No!
Rook: Varric!
Solas: You have no idea what you have done.
Solas: This is your responsibility now.

Varric wakes up next to them as Rook puts their head in their hands.

Varric: Well. (Coughs) Look wo’s still with us.

Rook: Varric? You’re okay! But I saw Solas stab you. You fell…

Varric: Trust me kid. I’ve had worse. Gonna take more than a flesh wound to stop me. (Coughs) Don’t think I’ll be making it out to the field anytime soon, though.

Dialogue options:

1 - Investigate: What exactly happened?

Rook: What happened?

Encouraged Varric to talk to SolasTold Varric there was no point in talking

Varric: I did my best to talk sense into Solas, but of course he wasn’t listening. He never does.

Varric: Remember how you said Chuckles wasn’t going to listen, Rook? Turns out, you were right.

Rook: The plan did go a little wrong.

Took Harding to disrupt the ritualTook Neve to disrupt the ritual
Varric: Yeah. Harding got everyone out. By the skin of her teeth, mostly. Before you start worrying, Harding will be fine. She’s made of sterner stuff than either one of us. Or at least, she’s a lot tougher than me.Varric: Yeah. Neve got everyone out. By the skin of her teeth, mostly. Before you start worrying, Neve will be fine. She’s apparently a lot tougher than both of us put together. Or at least, she’s a lot tougher than me.

2 - Stoic: It’s worse than you think.

Rook: When we stopped the ritual, something else got out! Something even Solas is afraid of!

Varric: You’ve got this, Rook. World’s not flooded in demons right now because you stopped Solas. Not me.

Rook: Varric, even so, I need you to—

3 - Sad: I’m sorry, Varric.

Rook: I should’ve come up with a better plan. I should’ve—

Varric: You worked with what you had. And you succeeded, by the way. World isn’t drowning in demons.

Rook: It isn’t over though. We trapped Solas in the Fade, but something else got out. Something—

4 - Afraid: But I need you.

Rook: You’ve got to get better. We need you leading the charge.

Varric: You stopped Solas from flooding the world with demons, Rook. Not me. Besides, I can’t do much leading from bed.

Rook: But something else escaped, Varric. Something—

Back to previous tree.

Varric: Rook. You’ve got this. I’ve seen your work.

Origin Dependent Dialogue:
Varric: Like your impulsive rescue of those captive from the Antaam slavers. After that, the Crows thought you needed a little break.

Varric: There’s a reason I dragged you into this whole Solas mess. You’re clever. Adaptable. And you don’t know when to quit.

One of the companions walks in.

Choice dependent dialogue:

Harding: Rook? You’re awake? Sorry, I didn’t mean to barge in. I was looking for elfroot.

Harding looks injured as she walks in.

Rook: No it’s… it’s fine. I was just going to stretch my legs.

Harding: Oh! Rook, watch your step out there. If you put a wrong foot, you’ll fall forever. Yeah, on top of everything else, the eluvian took us to the Fade. The place where dreams come from? So, that… yeah.

Rook: Then I really need to look around.

Harding: Yeah, you should. And… we should talk about things. Maybe find Neve? She’s outside looking around. There’s a room with a table down the stairs. I’ll meet you there.

Back to choice selection.

Varric: Go ahead, Rook. Me? I need to sleep. See you later, kid.
