Negotiations

The party heads towards Redcliffe.

Solas: Redcliffe village should be just ahead.

The party approaches the gates of Redcliffe. A rift is visible in front of the gates.

A soldier runs past the party.

Soldier: I want a constant watch on the damned thing! Sound the alarm at the first sight of demons! Soldier: Watch out, traveler! The Veil’s ripped open, and Maker-knows-what could come out! Soldier: Turn back! We can’t open the gates until the threat has passed!

The party fights the demons that come out of the rift. There are some areas where time moves faster or slower.

PC closes the rift.

PC: What… was that?

  • Blackwall: I don’t know. Was that a new kind of rift? How many of them are there?
  • Cassandra: We don’t know what these rifts can do. That one appeared to alter the time around it.
  • Iron Bull: That fade rift messed up time. See, this is why my people get pissy about magic!
  • Sera: Demons and rubbish are bad enough. This, I don’t even want to know!
  • Solas: That rift altered the flow of time around itself. That is… unexpected.
  • Vivienne: None of my reports indicated temporal distortions near these rifts. Interesting.
  • Varric: I think we could have skipped these things getting weirder, don’t you?
  • PC (no one else in party): That was not like other rifts.
Dialogue options:
  • General: Maybe Fiona will know.
PC: There are many mages in Redcliffe. Maybe Fiona will know what’s going on.

  • General: We’ll have to look into this.
PC: We need to find out what caused… whatever this is.

  • General: Something’s wrong here.
PC: Something’s not right — stay on your guard.

Soldier: Maker have mercy! It’s over? Open the gates!

The gates open and the group walks through the gates. They are greeted by an Inquisition scout.

Scout: We’ve spread word that the Inquisition was coming, but you should know no one here was expecting us.

PC: No one? Not even Grand Enchanter Fiona?

Scout: If she was, she hasn’t told anyone. We’ve arranged use of the tavern for the negotiations.

An elf approaches.

Lysas: Agents of the Inquisition, my apologies! Magister Alexius is in charge now, but hasn’t yet arrived. He’s expected shortly. You can speak with the former grand enchanter in the meantime.

Lysas leaves.

  • Sera: Why is this place so weird?
  • Solas: The Veil is weaker here than in Haven. And not merely weak but altered in a way I have not seen.
  • Varric: Is it just me, or is something weird going on here.

  • Blackwall: Something’s not right. We need to talk to the grand enchanter.
  • Cassandra: We should talk to the grand enchanter.
  • Vivienne: We must speak with Fiona at once.

They enter Redcliffe proper. There is a whole lot of ambient chatter about mages, tenplars, and the Inquisition’s actions based on side quests completed.

The party enters the Gull & Lantern. Fiona is there to greet them as they enter.

Fiona: Welcome, agents of the Inquisition.

If Vivienne is in party:

Fiona: First Enchanter Vivienne.

Vivienne: My dear Fiona. It’s been so long since we last spoke. You look dreadful! Are you sleeping well?

Fiona: What has brought you to Redcliffe?

Dialogue options:
  • General: You invited me here.
PC: We’re here because of your invitation back in Val Royeaux.

  • General: Is that a trick question?
PC: Is this some kind of test? We’re here because you invited us in Val Royeaux.

  • General: Drop the act.
PC: Skip the pleasantries. You know why we’re here. You came all the way to Val Royeaux to invite us.

Fiona: You must be mistaken. I haven’t been to Val Royeaux since before the Conclave.

Dialogue options:

1 - General: Then who did I meet?

PC: If it wasn’t you who invited me here, who was it?

Fiona: I… I don’t know. Now that you say it, I feel strange…

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: Something weird is happening.

PC: Well, that’s very strange, because someone who looked exactly like you spoke to me in Val Royeaux.

Fiona: Exactly like me? I suppose it could be magic at work, but why would anyone…

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: I’m certain it was you.

PC: There is no mistake. While the templars were leaving, you came to Val Royeaux and asked me here.

Fiona: The templars left Val Royeaux? Where did they go? That sounds… Why does that sound so strange?

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Fiona: Whoever… or whatever brought you here, the situation has changed. The free mages have already… pledged themselves to the service of the Tevinter Imperium.

  • Cassandra: An alliance with Tevinter? Do you not fear all of Thedas turning against you?
  • Iron Bull: This right here is why you can’t trust mages.
  • Solas: I understand that you are afraid, but you deserve better than slavery to Tevinter.
  • Varric: Andraste’s ass… I’m trying to think of a single worse thing you could have done. And I’ve got nothing.
  • Vivienne: Fiona dear, your dementia is showing.

Fiona: As one indentured to a magister, I no longer have the authority to negotiate with you.

Dialogue options:

5 - General: That was fast.

PC: The Divine’s corpse is barely cold, and you’ve already joined the Imperium?

Fiona: Most of Thedas blames us for the Divine’s death. The templar attacks grew worse, and we mages had no allies. Either my people made a last stand here in Redcliffe, or we took the only offer of help extended to us. I had to save them. I had no other choice.

Scene continues. [9]

6 - General: You’re ignoring the Breach?

PC: What about the giant hole in the Veil that’s spewing demons everywhere? You’re just going to pretend it isn’t there?

Fiona: I am not forgetting the Breach, but we can only fight one war at a time. The templar threat was immediate. If we live, we can worry about the torn Veil.

Scene continues. [9]

7 - General: You’ve made a huge mistake.

PC: An alliance with Tevinter is a terrible mistake.

Fiona: All hope of peace died with Justinia. This… bargain with Tevinter would not have been my first choice, but we had no choice. We are losing this war. I needed to save as many of my people as I could.

Scene continues. [9]

8 - General: Then tell me who does.

PC: very well. Who’s in charge now?

Scene continues. [9]

9 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Two figures dressed in Tevinter garb approach from behind them,

Alexius: Welcome, my friends! I apologize for not greeting you earlier.

Fiona: Agents of the Inquisition, allow me to introduce Magister Gereon Alexius.

Alexius: The southern mages are under my command. And you are the survivor, yes? The one from the fade? Interesting.

Dialogue options:

10 - Investigate: Tell me about this alliance.

PC: I’d like to know more about this alliance between the rebel mages and the Imperium.
Alexius: Certainly. What specifically do you wish to know?

Dialogue options:

15 - Investigate: Fiona said she’s “indentured.”

PC: The grand enchanter told me she was “indentured to a magister.”

Alexius: Out southern brethren have no legal status in the Imperium. As they were not born citizens of Tevinter, they must work for a period of ten years before gaining full rights. As their protector, I shall oversee their work for the Imperium.

Return to main dialogue tree.

16 - Investigate: When did this happen?

PC: I’m not clear on when, exactly, you negotiated the arrangement with Fiona.

Alexius: When the conclave was destroyed, these poor souls faces the brutality of the templars, who rushed to attack them. It could only be through divine providence that I arrived when I did.

Fiona: It was certainly… very timely.

Return to main dialogue tree.

17 - Investigate: What does Tevinter gain?

PC: What does the Imperium gain from taking rebel mages under its wing?

Alexius: For the moment, the southern mages are a considerable expense. After they are properly trained, they will join our legion.

Fiona: You said not all my people would be military! There are children, those not suited—

Alexius: And one day, I’m sure they will all be productive citizens of the Imperium. When their debts are paid.

Return to main dialogue tree.

11 - Investigate: Where’s the arl?

PC: I haven’t seen any sign of Redcliffe’s arl or his men.

Alexius: The arl of Redcliffe left the village.

  • Cassandra: Arl Teagan did not abandon his lands during the Blight, even when they were under siege.
  • Blackwall: Left? An arl would never voluntarily leave his seat.
  • Varric: “Left.” That’s a polite way of saying “thrown out on his ass.”

Alexius: There were… tensions growing. I did not want an incident.

Return to dialogue tree.

12 - General: Let’s negotiate.

PC: If you’re leading the mages now, then let’s talk. I’m sure we can come to an arrangement.

Alexius: It is always a pleasure to meet a reasonable [person].

Scene continues. [15]

13 - General: This is a long way from home.

PC: You’re quite a long way from Tevinter, Alexius.

Alexius: Indeed I am, though I have heard you are no Ferelden either. It seems we are both strangers here.

Scene continues. [15]

14 - General: I need mages for the Breach.

PC: I’m here to get mages to close the Breach.

Alexius: Right to business! I understand, of course.

Scene continues. [15]

15 - Scene continues.
Return to previous main tree.

Alexius gestures the PC to follow and takes a seat at a table, where the PC joins him. Fiona looks distressed.

Alexius: Felix, would you send for a scribe, please? Pardon my manners. My son Felix, friends.

Felix bows and leaves.

Alexius: I am not surprised you’re here. Containing the Breach is not a feat that many could even attempt. There is no telling how many mages would be needed for such an endeavor. Ambitious, indeed.

Dialogue options:
  • General: Then you’ll help us?
PC: Does that mean you’ll lend your mages to our cause?

  • General: We don’t think small here.
PC: Well, when you’re fighting a massive tear in the sky, you can hardly afford to think small.

  • General: I’ll take whoever you’ve got.
PC: I’ll take every mage you can give me.

Alexius: There will have to be—

Felix returns to the table, but appears unsteady. The PC and Alexius rise, and Felix stumbles into the PC.

Alexius: Felix!

Female PCMale PC
Felix: I’m so sorry! Please forgive my clumsiness, my lady.Felix: My lord, I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.

Alexius: Are you all right?

Felix: I’m fine, father.

Alexius: Come, I’ll get your powders. Please excuse me, friends. We will have to continue this another time. Fiona, I require your assistance back at the castle.

Felix: I don’t mean to trouble everyone.

Alexius: I will send word to the Inquisition. We will conclude this business at a later date.

Alexius, Felix, and Fiona leave. The PC looks down at a note that Felix gave him when he stumbled.

PC: “Come to the Chantry. You are in danger.”

  • Cassandra: Did the magister’s son give you that? Why would he help you?
  • Blackwall: That from the magister’s son? You really think he wants to help you?
  • Sera: Well, aren’t we secret-y.
  • Solas: The note is unsigned. The boy feared his father might retrieve it.
  • Varric: Oh, very interesting.
  • Vivienne: The magister’s son dropped that? Be cautious, Inquisitor. Family name is everything in Tevinter. [lol Viv, we’re not the Inquisitor yet.]
Dialogue options:
  • General: It’s worth investigating.
PC: We’ll be careful, but we need to figure out what’s going on here.

  • General: It could be a trap.
PC: There’s no telling who or what will be waiting for us in that Chantry.

    • Cassandra: We’ll be on guard.
    • Sera: Come on, let’s do something.
    • Varric: Only one way to find out.
    • Vivienne: We have found more questions than answers so far, my dear.
    • Solas: Elaborate bait for a trap. Why would he not just openly invite us there?
    • Blackwall: I suppose we won’t find out unless we go.

Magister Pavus

The party enters the Redcliffe chantry to see Dorian beating the daylights out of shades with his staff in front of a rift.

Dorian: Good, you’re finally here! Now help me close this would you?

The party fights another time-altering rift with Dorian’s assistance. After it is closed, Dorian approaches the party.

Dorian: Fascinating, how does that work, exactly? You don’t even know, do you? You just wiggle your fingers, and boom! Rift closes.

PC: Who are you?

Dorian: Ah, getting ahead of myself again, I see. Dorian of House Pavus, most recently of Minrathous. How do you do?

  • Cassandra: Another Tevinter. Be cautious with this one.
Dorian: Suspicious friends you have here.

  • Iron Bull: Watch yourself. The pretty ones are always the worst.
Dorian: Suspicious friends you have here.

  • Vivienne: Let one Tevinter in, suddenly they’re scurrying out of all the walls like roaches.
Dorian: Now now, I’m ever so much more handsome than a cockroach.

Dorian: Magister Alexius was once my mentor, so my assistance should be valuable — as I’m sure you can imagine.

Dialogue options:

1 - Investigate: Where’s Felix?

PC: I was expecting Felix to be here.
Dorian: I’m sure he’s on his way. He was to give you the note, then meet us here after ditching his father.

Dialogue options:

6 - Investigate: Is something wrong with Felix?

PC: Alexius couldn’t jump to Felix’s fast enough when he pretended to be faint. Is something wrong with him?

Dorian: He’s had some lingering illness for months. Felix is an only child, and Alexius is being a mother hen, most likely.

Return to main dialogue tree.

2 - Investigate: You’re a Magister?

PC: Are you a magister?

Dorian: All right. Lets say this once. I’m a mage from Tevinter, but not a member of the Magisterium. I know southerners use the terms interchangeably, but that only make you sound like barbarians.

Return to main dialogue tree.

3 - General: Why help us?

PC: You’re betraying your mentor because…

Dorian: Alexius was my mentor. Meaning not any longer, not for some time.

Scene continues. [7]

4 - General: Quit grandstanding.

PC: Stop talking like you’re waiting for applause. Just tell me what’s going on.

Dorian: What, there’s no applause? Fine.

Scene continues. [7]

5 - General: Did you send the note?

PC: Are you the one that sent the note, then?

Dorian: I am. Someone had to warn you, after all.

Scene continues. [7]

7 - Scene continues.
Return to previous main tree

Dorian: Look, you must know there’s danger. That should be obvious even without the note. Let’s start with Alexius claiming all the rebel mages out from under you. As if by magic, yes? Which is exactly right. To reach Redcliffe before the Inquisition, Alexius distorted time itself.

Dialogue options:

8 - General: That sounds bad.

PC: I hope that’s less dangerous than it sounds.

Dorian: More.

Scene continues. [11]

9 - General: To get here before me?

PC: He arranged it so he could arrive here just after the Divine died?

Dorian: You catch on quick.

Scene continues. [11]

10 - General: That’s ridiculous.
Dalish PCHuman mage PCElse
PC: If there was a way to turn back time, the Dalish would have used it long ago.PC: I’ve never heard of time-controlling magic, not in all my studies.PC: I’ve never heard of magic that controls time.

Scene continues. [11]

11 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree
  • Solas: That is fascinating, if true… and almost certainly dangerous.
  • Sera: You don’t believe this do you? It’s daft.
  • Vivienne: Manipulating time itself? Many have attempted over the ages, but never once succeeded.

Dorian: The rift you closed here? You saw how it twisted time around itself, sped some things up and and slowed others down. Soon there will be more like it, and they’ll appear further and further away from Redcliffe. The magic Alexius is using is wildly unstable, and it’s unraveling the world.

Dialogue options:
  • General: This is a lot to swallow.
PC: You’re asking me to take a lot on faith.

  • General: Do you have evidence?
PC: I’d like more proof than “magical time control! Go with it.”

  • General: I don’t trust you.
PC: Why should I believe any of this?

Dorian: I know what I’m talking about. I helped develop this magic. When I was still his apprentice, it was pure theory. Alexius could never get it to work. What I don’t understand is why he’s doing it? Ripping time to shreds just to gain a few hundred lackeys?

Felix joins the conversation.

Felix: He didn’t do it for them.

Dorian: Took you long enough. Is he getting suspicious?

Felix: No, but I shouldn’t have played the illness card. I thought he’d be fussing over me all day.

Felix: My father’s joined a cult. Tevinter supremacists. They call themselves “Venatori.” And I can tell you one thing: whatever he’s done for them, he’s done it to get to you.

Dialogue options:

12 - Investigate: Why are you telling me this?

PC: Alexius is your father. Why are you working against him?

Felix: For the same reason Dorian works against him. I love my father, and I love my country. But this? Cults? Time magic? What he’s doing is madness. For his own sake, you have to stop him.

Dorian: It would also be nice if he didn’t rip a hole in time. There’s already a hole in the sky.

Return to dialogue tree.

13 - Investigate: Why does he want me?

PC: Why would he rearrange time and indenture the mage rebellion just to get to me?

Felix: They’re obsessed with you, but I don’t know why. Perhaps because you survived the Temple of Sacred Ashes?

Dorian: You can close the rifts. Maybe there’s a connection? Or they see you as a threat?

Felix: If the Venatori are behind those rifts, or the Breach in the sky, they’re even worse than I thought.

Return to dialogue tree.

14 - General: How do we stop him?

PC: Do you have any suggestions?

Scene continues. [17]

15 - General: I’m flattered.

PC: All this for me? And here I didn’t get Alexius anything.

Dorian: Send him a fruit basket. Everyone loves those.

Scene continues. [17]

16 - General: He doesn’t scare me.

PC: I’m not afraid of Alexius.

Scene continues. [17]

17 -  Scene continues.
Return to previous tree

Dorian: You know you’re his target. Expecting the trap is the first step in turning it to your advantage. I can’t stay in Redcliffe. Alexius doesn’t know I’m here, and I want to keep it that way for now. But whenever you’re ready to deal with him, I want to be there. I’ll be in touch.

Dorian goes to leave, but turns to Felix on the way out.

Dorian: And Felix? Try not to get yourself killed.

Felix: There are worse things than dying, Dorian.

The party leaves the Chantry.

  • Blackwall: You think they’re right? Alexius is setting a trap for us?
    • Cassandra: We need his mages to seal the Breach. We have no choice but to deal with him.
    • Iron Bull: He’s a Vint, so… probably?
    • Sera: Ugh, a “magister trap.” I bet there’ll be talking.
    • Solas: If so, his son and his protégé turned against him to warn us. Dangerous schemes are being hatched here.
    • Varric: I’m sure he is. Everything about that magister practically screamed “I’m setting a trap!”
    • Vivienne: Alexius reeked of frustration. Strange for a man who seemed in complete control of everything.

  • Cassandra: This whole business is distasteful. Perhaps we are better off pursuing the templars instead.
    • Blackwall: Whatever we do, we should do it quickly. The Breach isn’t getting any smaller.
    • Iron Bull: Are there going to be fewer demons that way? Because I’d be up for that.
    • Sera: Just pick one, because both sides need a boot up the jackside.
    • Solas: We may not have time. The Breach will not wait for deliberation.
    • Varric: I’d bet you ten royals whatever the templars are doing is just as weird.
    • Vivienne: I’d be careful of that, Cassandra. You don’t want the Inquisition to gain a reputation for abandoning causes halfway.

  • Iron Bull: Gotta admit, I wasn’t expecting to find so many Vints here.
    • Blackwall: Didn’t they rule everything before? Maybe they just want everything back.
    • Cassandra: We must be ready for anything.
    • Sera: That’s what they do, yeah? Always showing up places? Tevinter must be rubbish.
    • Solas: I suggest you keep your eyes open. Our true enemy is not yet clear.
    • Varric: Tevinters and blood mages are like lost socks… or couriers from the Merchant Guild. They turn up in the damnedest places.
    • Vivienne: I doubt they expected to find Qunari here.

  • Sera: “Oh, demons don’t scare me, I’ll fight ten at once.” Ease up, big horse.
    • Blackwall: I know, right? All this just makes my head spin.
    • Cassandra: He seemed… competent.
    • Iron Bull: If he wants to fight demons, more power to him. He can fight all the demons he wants.
    • Solas: In fact, he acquitted himself quite well.
    • Varric: Anyone can fight ten demons at once. Not dying while you do it? That’s the tricky part.
    • Vivienne: It’s not arrogance if it’s earned, Sera dear. We’ll see if he deserves it.

  • Solas: Do we believe that both Alexius’s son and apprentice are turning on him? It seems someone wants to trap us either way.
    • Blackwall: I don’t know what to believe. All of this seems wrong.
    • Cassandra: Their willingness to betray raises the question of whether they will betray us.
    • Iron Bull: Vints. They can’t sneeze without stabbing each other in the back.
    • Sera: Then let’s make them believe that it’s a bad idea.
    • Varric: Judging by the rifts here, I think Dorian was telling the truth, weird as that is.
    • Vivienne: Whatever we believe, something has clearly changed the rifts in the region. I advise caution.

  • Varric: Does Tevinter really need cults? Aren’t they weird enough?
    • Blackwall: Can we trust Dorian and Felix? I’m not sure who to believe here.
    • Cassandra: The word you’re looking for is “dangerous.”
    • Iron Bull: Vints are all crazy. If it’s not cults, it’s demons, or musical theater, or something.
    • Sera: They believe rubbish anyway. A cult in their cult just doubles it.
    • Solas: They have torn open time itself, So no, I doubt they need a cult as well.
    • Vivienne:  Since they’ve outmaneuvered us so far, it might be wise to take the Venatori seriously.

  • Vivienne: Well, the malcontents pledged themselves to Tevinter and joined a cult. I can hardly wait to see what comes next.
    • Blackwall: Oh, it’ll probably all go to shit, and we’ll be stuck mopping it up.
    • Cassandra:  We must untangle this quickly. The Breach will not wait on our intrigues.
    • Iron Bull: Me chopping Vints in half, hopefully.
    • Sera: Arrows. Arrows come next.
    • Solas: There are enough twists and turns to keep anyone occupied here.
    • Varric: Yeah, I saw something like this back in Kirkwall. It may end with someone turning into a monster made of corpses.

A Way In

The PC joins the advisors at the war table after deciding to pursue the matter in Redcliffe.

Cullen: We don’t have the manpower to take the castle! Either we find another way in, or give up this nonsense and go get the templars!

Cassandra: Redcliffe is in the hands of a magister. This cannot be allowed to stand.

Joesphine: The letter from Alexius asked for the Herald of Andraste by name. It’s an obvious trap.

Dialogue options:

1 - General: We need to stop arguing.

PC: We can’t waste time fighting among ourselves. We have to come to an agreement.

Leliana: A Tevinter magister controls Redcliffe, invites us to the castle to talk, and some of us want to do nothing.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: How nice of him

PC: Isn’t that kind of him. What does Alexius say about me?

Leliana: He’s so complimentary that we are certain he wants to kill you.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: Alexius made his move.

PC: So we’ve heard from Magister Alexius. I expected as much.

Leliana: And yet some of us want to sit and do nothing.

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree

Josephine: Not this again.

Cullen: Redcliffe Castle is one of the most defensible fortresses in Ferelden. It has repelled thousands of assaults.

Cullen (to PC): If you go in there, you’ll die. And we’ll lose the only means we have of closing these rifts. I won’t allow it.

Leliana: And if we don’t even try to meet with Alexius, we lose the mages and leave a hostile foreign power on our doorstep!

Josephine: Even if we could assault the keep, it would be for naught. An “Orlesian” Inquisition’s army marching into Ferelden would provoke a war. Our hands are tied.

Cassandra: The Magister—

Cullen: Has outplayed us.

Dialogue options:

5 - General: There must be a way.

PC: We can’t just give up. There has to be something we can do.

Scene continues. [8]

6 - General: I don’t think it’s over.

PC: The magister’s son, Felix, told me Alexius is in a cult that’s obsessed with me. I doubt they’ll graciously receive our apologies and go about their business.

Leliana: They will remain a threat, and a powerful one, unless we act.

7 - General: Let’s get the templars.

PC: Fine. We go get the templars, and they help us deal with Alexius.

Leliana: My spies report the mages have already mobilized for war. Even if we succeed at recruiting the templars, it will be too late to stop Alexius.

8 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree

Cassandra: We cannot accept defeat now. There must be a solution.

Dialogue options:

9 - General: Contact the arl.

PC: Where is the arl of Redcliffe? I’m sure he’d help us get his castle back.

Josephine: After he was displace, Arl Teagan rode straight for Denerim to petition the Crown for help. I doubt he’ll want our assistance once the Ferelden army lays siege to his castle.

Scene continues. [12]

10 - General: We need another way inside.

PC: Other than the main gate, there’s got to be another way into the castle. A sewer? A water course? Something?

Cullen: There’s nothing I know of that would work.

Scene continues. [12]

11 - General: This isn’t worth the trouble.

PC: Forget the mages. We still have another way of closing the Breach.

Scene continues. [12]

12 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree

Leliana: Wait. There’s a secret passage into the castle, an escape route for the family. It’s too narrow for our troops, but we could send agents through.

Cullen: Too risky. Those agents will be discovered well before they reach the magister.

Leliana: That’s why we need a distraction. Perhaps the envoy Alexius wants so badly?

Dalish PCDwarf PCHuman PCQunari PC
Cullen: While they’re focused on Lavellan, we break the magister’s defenses. It could work, but it’s a huge risk.Cullen: While the attention’s on Cadash, we dismantle their trap. Dangerous, but it could work.Cullen: Focus their attention on Trevelyan while we take out the Tevinters. It’s risky, but it could work.Cullen: Keep attention on Adaar while we disable the magister’s defenses. It’s a gamble, but it might work.

The door to the War Room bursts open and Dorian enters. A soldier trails in behind him.

Dorian: Fortunately, you’ll have help.

Soldier: This man says he has information about the magister and his methods, Commander.

Dorian: Your spies will never get past Alexius’s magic without my help. So if you’re going after him, I’m coming along.

Cullen: The plan puts you in the most danger. We can’t, in good conscience, order you to do this. We can still go after the templars if you’d rather not play the bait. It’s up to you.

Operation confirmed. The Party travels to Redcliffe.

Redcliffe Castle

The PC approaches the castle gates where a Venatori guard stands. The castle herald heads down the steps to them.

  • General: They’re negotiators.

PC: They have to accompany me. You wouldn’t deprive me of my attaches, would you?

  • General: They go where I go.
PC: Where I go, they go.

There is a stare-down between the PC and the herald, but the herald nods and leads then into the castle.

Return to choice dependent dialogue.

The party is led through the castle past numerous Venatori guards.

Herald: My lord magister, the agents of the Inquisition have arrived.

Alexius stands to greet the PC. Felix stands aside his seat.

Alexius: My friend! It is good to see you again.

Traveling with party members:
Alexius: And your associates, of course.

Alexius: I’m sure we can work out some arrangement that is equitable to all parties.

Fiona: Are we mages to have no voice in deciding our fate?

Alexius: Fiona, you would not have turned your followers over to my care if you did not trust me with their lives.

Dialogue options:

1 - General: Perhaps we should include her.

PC: If the Grand Enchanter wants to be part of these talks, then I welcome her as a guest of the Inquisition.

Fiona: Thank you.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: Because you simply ooze trust.

PC: Of course she trusts you, Alexius. I’m sure lots of people put their lives in your hands. You have one of those faces.

Alexius: Yes, the Magisterium tells me that so often. Shall we begin our talks?

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: Let’s get to business.

PC: Enough pleasantries. Shall we begin?

Alexius: It’s refreshing to meet someone so goal-oriented.

Scene continues. [4]

Alexius turns away and retakes his seat.

Alexius: The Inquisition needs mages to close the Breach, and I have them. So, what shall you offer in exchange?

Dialogue options:

5  - General: We have connections.

PC: The Inquisition has many backers among the Orlesian nobility. I’m sure we can find suitable compensation.

Alexius: I’m not sure what the Orlesian nobility have to offer that I don’t already possess.

Scene continues. [10]

6 - General: Nothing

PC: Nothing at all. I’m just going to take the mages and leave.

Alexius: And how do you imagine you’ll accomplish such a feat?

Scene continues. [10]

7 - General: Tell me about the Venatori.

PC: Actually, I hoped you could tell me about these “Venatori” I’m hearing so much about.

Alexius: Now, where could you have heard that name?

Scene continues. [10]

8 - General: Let’s talk about time magic.

PC: I’d much rather discuss your time magic.

Alexius: I’m afraid I have no idea what you mean.

Scene continues. [10]

9 - General: I know you want me dead.

PC: Don’t bother. I know you invited me here to kill me.

Alexius: If you believe that, I marvel that you chose to come anyway.

Scene continues. [10]

Felix: [They] know everything, father.

Alexius: Felix, what have you done?

Dialogue options:

11 - General: He’s concerned about you.

PC: Your son is concerned that you’re involved in something terrible.

Alexius: So speaks the thief. Do you think you can turn my son against me?

Scene continues. [14]

12 - General: Your trap has already failed.

PC: We made sure to disarm your traps before we came in. I hope you don’t mind.

Alexius: I’ve yet to see your cleverness, I’m afraid.

Scene continues. [14]

13 - General: Why are you really here?

PC: You wanted me here. Why?

Alexius: Do you know what you are?

Scene continues. [14]

14 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree

Alexius stands again and walks towards the PC.

Alexius: You walk into my stronghold with your stolen mark—a gift you don’t even understand—and think you’re in control? You’re nothing but a mistake.

Dialogue options:

15 - General: Who killed the Divine?

PC: What do you know about the Divine’s death?

Alexius: It was the Elder One’s moment, and you were unworthy even to stand in his presence.

Scene continues. [18]

16 - General: What was supposed to happen?

PC: If I’m a mistake, what exactly was the Breach supposed to accomplish?

Alexius: It was to be a triumphant moment for the Elder One, for this world!

Scene continues. [18]

17 - General: What is the mark?

PC: If you know so much, enlighten me. Tell me what this mark on my hand is for.

Alexius: It belongs to your betters. You wouldn’t even begin to understand it’s purpose.

Scene continues. [18]

Felix: Father, listen to yourself! Do you know what you sound like?

Dorian enters the conversation from behind a pillar, sauntering into the main part of the room.

Dorian: He sounds exactly like the sort of villainous cliché everyone expects us to be.

Alexius: Dorian. I gave you a chance to be a part of this. You turned me down. The Elder One has power you would not believe. He will raise the Imperium from its own ashes.

Dialogue options:

19 - General: Who is the Elder One?

PC: That’s who you serve? The one who killed the Divine? Is he a mage?

Alexius: Soon he will become a god.

Scene continues. [22]

20 - General: You’re a fanatic.

PC: Blah, blah. “My cult is better than yours.” I’ve heard it a thousand times.

Dorian: Well, you know, it’s a chance for the Imperium to really one-up that whole “starting the Blight” thing.

Scene continues. [22]

21 - General: What kind of power?

PC: What’s better than turning back time?

Scene continues. [22]

Alexius: He will make the work bow to mages once more. We will rule from the Boeric Ocean to the Frozen Seas.

Fiona: You can’t involve my people in this!

Dorian: Alexius, this is exactly what you and I talked about never wanting to happen! Why would you support this?

Guards start dying in the background. The first one is shot with an arrow.

Felix: Stop it father. Give up the Venatori. Let the southern mages fight the Breach, and let’s go home.

Alexius: No! It’s the only way, Felix. He can save you!

Felix: Save me?

Alexius: There is a way. The Elder One promised. If I undo the mistake at the Temple…

Felix: I’m going to die. You need to accept that.

Alexius: Seize them, Venatori! The Elder One demands this [person]’s life!

Inquisition scouts appear after killing the rest of the Venatori guards.

PC: Your men are dead, Alexius.

Alexius: You… are a mistake! You never should have existed!

Alexius holds up a necklace of some kind and begins charging it with magic.

Dorian: No!

Dorian attempts to hit Alexius with magic, and the magister stumbles. Some kind of rift/portal opens up in the room over the PC, and the scene fades to black.

A Bleak Future

Dorian and the PC appear with a flash that catches the attracts the attention of some Venatori guards.

Guard 1: Blood of the Elder One!

Guard 2: Where’d they come from?

The PC fights the guards in a flooded dungeon room filled with red lyrium.

Dorian: Displacement? Interesting! It’s probably not what Alexius intended The rift must have moved us… to what? The closest confluence of arcane energy?

PC: The last thing I remember, we were in the castle hall.

Dorian: Let’s see. If we’re still in the castle, it isn’t… Oh! Of course! It’s not simply where—it’s when! Alexius used the amulet as a focus. It moved us through time!

Dialogue options:

1 - Confused: Is that even possible?

PC: Moved us through time? Can that even be done?

Dorian: Normally I would say no. Obviously Alexius has taken his research to exciting new heights. We’ve seen his temporal rifts before. This time we simply… passed through one.

Scene continues. [5]

2 - Alarmed: What? How far?

PC: Did we go forward in time or back, and how far?

Dorian: Those are excellent questions. We’ll have to find out, won’t we?

Scene continues. [5]

3 - Angry: Then we go back.

PC: Then we undo this and go back. Now.

Dorian: I’m not certain it’ll be a matter of snapping our fingers, but yes, I quite agree.

Scene continues. [5]

4 - Stoic: That doesn’t sound good.

PC: That… doesn’t sound good.

Dorian: It sounds terrible, depending on when we are and what happened while we were away.

Scene continues. [5]

5 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Dorian: Let’s look around, see where the rift took us. Then we can figure out how to get back… if we can.

Dialogue options:

6 - Investigate: What was supposed to happen?

PC: What was Alexius trying to do?

Dorian: I believe his original plan was to remove you from time completely. If that happened, you would never have been at the Temple of Sacred Ashes or mangled the Elder One’s plan. I think your surprise in the castle hall made him reckless. He tossed us into the rift before he was ready. I countered it, the magic went wild, and here we are. Make sense?

Dialogue options:

12 - Special: Not really.

PC: It just seems so insane.

Dorian: I don’t even want to think about what this will do to the fabric of the world. We didn’t “travel” through time so much as punch a hole through it and toss it in the privy. But don’t worry. I’m here. I’ll protect you.

Return to main dialogue tree

7 - Investigate: What about the others?

PC: There were others in the hall. Could they have been drawn through the rift?

Dorian: I doubt it was large enough to bring the whole room through. Alexius wouldn’t risk catching himself or Felix in it. They’re probably still where, and when, we left them. In some sense, anyway.

Return to dialogue tree

8 - Investigate: Do you know this “Elder One”?

PC: Alexius mentioned an “Elder One” in the hall. Do you know who he was talking about?

Dorian: Leader of the Venatori, I suspect. Some magister aspiring to godhood. It’s the same old tune. “Let’s play with magic we don’t understand. It will make us incredibly powerful!” Evidently, it doesn’t matter if you rip apart the fabric of time in the process.

Return to dialogue tree

9 - General: What if we can’t get back?

PC: And what happens if we can’t get back?

Dorian: Then we get comfortable in our new present.

Scene continues. [13]

10 - General: I hope you have a plan.

PC: You have a plan to get us back, I hope.

Dorian: I have some thoughts on that. They’re lovely thoughts, like little jewels.

11 - General: Let’s get moving.

PC: Then let’s go.

Dorian: I’m right behind you.

Return to previous main tree.

The PC and Dorian enter the Upper Cells.

Dorian: Alexius has made a dreadful mess of this place, hasn’t he?

PC: I didn’t see this part of the castle.

Dorian: It was covered in the tackiest carvings of wolves and dogs I’ve ever seen. This is not an improvement.

The PC and Dorian keep traveling through the ruined dungeon. Blood is splattered on the walls and red lyrium is everywhere. An elf is in one of the cells.

Lysas: Andraste blessed me, Andraste blessed me… My tears are my sins, my sins, my sins, my sins… Andraste guide me, Andraste guide me…

If party members have been rescued:

  • Cassandra: His mind is gone. He can say nothing else.
  • Blackwall: Poor lad. That’s all he ever does, sing that song. I don’t know what they did to him.
  • Sera: He sings to feel better, but he’s just gone. Ruddy nightmare if you’re next door.
  • Solas: His mind has been shattered. He says nothing else.
  • Varric: He’s been singing that same song for two weeks now. Alexius has a lot to answer for.
  • Vivienne: The magister would have done better to kill him. He is worse than Tranquil now.

If the PC spoke with Lysas in Redcliffe:

Dialogue options:
  • General: What happened to you?
PC: What did they do to you?

  • General: I know you.
PC: Lysas? Hello? Do you remember me?

Lysas: Andraste blessed me, Andraste blessed me…

The PC continues on, unable to help. They fight more Venatori, and re-enter the lower cells to find Fiona half-engulfed by red lyrium and clearly in agony.

Fiona: You’re… alive? How? I saw you… disappear… into the rift.

Dialogue options:

14 - Surprised: Fiona, is that you?

PC: Fiona, is that really you?

Fiona: What’s left… of me.

Dorian: Can you tell us the date? It’s very important.

Scene continues. [18]

15 - Confused: What happened to you?

PC: I don’t understand. What’s happened to you?

Fiona: Red lyrium… it’s a disease. The longer you’re near it… eventually… you become this. Then they mine your corpse for more.

Dorian: Can you tell us the date? It’s very important.

Scene continues. [18]

16 - Alarmed: Is lyrium growing out of you?

PC: Is that red lyrium growing from your body? How?

Fiona: The longer you’re near it… eventually… you become this. Then they mine your corpse for more.

Dorian: Can you tell us the date? It’s very important.

Fiona: Please… stop this from happening.

Scene continues. [22]

20 - General: And I missed everything!

PC: I’ve missed out on a lot during that year.

Fiona: You must… beware.

Fiona: Alexius… serves the Elder One. More powerful… than the Maker… No one… challenges him and lives.

Dialogue options:

PC: I promise, I will do everything in my power to set things right.

  • General: I can’t wait to meet him.
PC: I’ve never fought a god before. This should be memorable.

  • General: Alexius will wish I died.
PC: That magister’s going to regret he didn’t just kill me.

Dorian: Our only hope is to find the amulet Alexius used to send us here. If it still exists, I can use it to reopen the rift at the exact same spot we left. Maybe.

Fiona: Good.

Dorian: I said maybe. It might also turn us into paste.

Fiona: You must try. Your spymaster, Leliana… She is here. Find her. Quickly… before the Elder One… learns you’re here.

The PC and Dorian leave Fiona to her fate and head out of the room.

Dorian: If red lyrium is an infection… Maker, why is it coming out of the walls?

PC: Are you sure you want to find out?

  • General: We can prevent all of this.
PC: If we get to Alexius, we can go back to the moment we left and stop all of this from happening.
  • General: I don’t either.
PC: You’re not the only one. Just come help me fight Alexius, and maybe we’ll fix all this.
  • General: Help me fight.
PC: Help me fight Alexius, and we might be able to go back and stop all this before it happens.

Blackwall: Maybe I’ve just gone mad. If what you say is true… Then this… everything I’ve been through, everything about this nightmare, is a mistake?

Blackwall: Now I know I’ve gone mad. To set all this right…

Spymaster

After gathering up party members and speaking with Fiona, the party takes off to find Leliana.

  • Blackwall: From what I’ve heard the guards say, Alexius never leaves the throne room these days.
  • Cassandra: Alexius locked himself in the throne room. That’s where we’ll find him.
  • Iron Bull: Magister’s in his throne room. Vints say he locked himself in.
  • Sera: You want Alexius? He’s locked in the throne room. Never leaves, guards say.
  • Solas: We’ll have to go up. I’ve heard the guards saying that Alexius barricaded himself in the throne room.
  • Vivienne: Head to the throne room, my dear. The guards whisper that Alexius has locked himself inside.

The party heads up and finds Venatori looking for them.

Guard: Find them! They must be here somewhere!

The party defeats the guards.

First CommentSecond Comment
  • Blackwall: Feels good to be fighting again.
  • Cassandra: Andraste have Mercy on their souls.
  • Iron Bull: Damn, I needed a good fight.
  • Sera: Let’s not stop ‘til these bastards are lying in their own innnards.
  • Solas: If this madness is to be undone, we must focus on Alexius.
  • Varric: Well, it’s nice to do something constructive for a change.
  • Vivienne: We shouldn’t keep Alexius waiting, my dears. It’s dreadfully rude.
  • Blackwall: I almost feel nostalgic.
  • Cassandra: Just like old times.
  • Iron Bull: Nice to be doing anything at all. I’m enjoying it while it lasts.
  • Sera: Can we find something else to hit? It’ll make me feel better.
  • Solas: We may not have much time. Let’s find the magister, quickly.
  • Varric: Well, that gang’s all back together. What could go wrong now?
  • Vivienne: I’m sure Alexius will be delighted to see us.

The party travels up the stairs into the guard barracks. It is abandoned and covered with red lyrium growths.

  • Sera: Might be stuff we can use around here.
  • Varric: Take a look around. See if there’s anything we can use.

The party continues into the torture chambers. There is even more red lyrium, blood, corpses, and torture devices. They travel through the halls and approach a door where they overhear a haunting conversation.

Venatori: There is no Maker. The Elder One has taken all that is His and will soon rule from His city.

Woman: That still doesn’t make him a god.

A impact is heard and the woman cries out.

Venatori: There is no god but the Elder One. The Maker is dead! Say it.

Woman: Never! I’ll die a good Andrastian before living a second as one of you!

An awful sounds is heard accompanied by the woman’s screams. If the party enters the room, they find Venatori surrounding the body of Revered Mother Eglantine. [What an awful, awful dialogue to overhear and have to re-experience multiple times. Ugh.]

  • Blackwall: Ah, Mother. Where was your Maker when you needed Him most?
  • Cassandra: May she find peace at the Maker’s side.
  • Sera: Makes me sick, what they do to the priests.
  • Solas: The Elder One does not suffer rivals of any kind.
  • Varric: I’m surprised they kept her alive this long. Poor woman.
  • Vivienne: The Elder One is particularly hard on the Chantry.

The party continues through the hallways and overhears another torture session.

Leliana: Never!

An impact is heard and there is a scream of pain.

Venatori: There is no use to this defiance, little bird. There’s no one left for you to protect.

Leliana: You’re wasting your breath.

Another impact is heard along with another scream of pain.

Venatori: Talk! The Elder One Demands answers!

Leliana(laughs angrily.) He’ll get used to disappointment.

A final impact is heard with Leliana’s scream of pain. The PC enters the room. A cloaked figure selects a knife from a table scattered with various devices, and approaches Leliana, who looks shriveled and ghoul-like. He grabs her head and hold the knife to her throat.

Venatori: You will break!

Leliana: I will die first.

The torturer is distracted by the entering PC and turns away from Leilana.

Leliana: Or you will.

The Venatori lets out a strangles gasp as Leliana crushes him while she hangs suspended from her wrists and snaps his neck. The PC loots the body for a key to let her down.

Leliana: You’re alive!

Dialogue options:

1 - General: It’ll be all right.

PC: You’re safe now.

Leliana: Forget “safe”. If you came back from the dead, you need to do better than “safe”.

2 - General: You’re tough.

PC: That was impressive.

Leliana: Anger is stronger than any pain.

Leliana: Do you have weapons?

The PC nods.

Leliana: Good. The magister is probably in his chambers.

She pushes between the PC and Dorian to a chest on the far side of the room that contains a bow and arrows,

Dorian: You… Aren’t curious how we got here?

Leliana: No.

Dorian: Alexius sent us into the future. This. His victory, his Elder One—it was never meant to be.

Dialogue options:

5 - General: I’m sorry for what happened.

PC: I’m so sorry for everything you suffered.

Dorian: We have to reverse his spell. If we can get to our present, we can prevent this future from ever happening.

Leliana: And mages always wonder why people fear them… No one should have this power.

Dorian: It’s dangerous and unpredictable. Before the Breach, nothing we did—

Leliana: Enough! This is all pretend to you. Some future you hope will never exist. I suffered. The whole world suffered. It was real.

The scene fades to black.

Finding the Throne Room

The party takes off with Leliana in tow.

Dorian: What happened while we were away?

Leliana: Stop talking.

Dorian: I’m just asking for information.

Leliana: No. You’re talking to fill silence. Nothing happened that you want to hear.

The party continues up some stairs.

Dorian: We need to find Alexius. I’m sure he’ll be in the nicer part of the castle. If there is one.

The party enters another room with demons and a rift and the PC closes. There are more blood circles and inscriptions scrawled throughout the room. There is a gate that the party travels though, and two familiar mages stand on the docks.

Linnea: The magister needs more power for his rituals.

Talwyn: No! Don’t hurt me Linnea. You know me!

Linnea: There is no other way to cure the Blight. [This line is in the game script but almost never triggers?]

Talwyn screams as Linnea attacks him.

Talwyn: Ahhh! Maker, no!

Linnea: There is no Maker. There is only Him. Come forth and serve the Elder One!

Both Linnea and Talwyn both become abominations as Linnea summons demons. The party defeats them.

  • Dorian: This is madness. Alexius can’t have wanted this.
  • Iron Bull: Why does everything they do with magic have to be so creepy?
  • Sera: More frigging demons.
  • Vivienne: The weak always resort to blood magic in time.

The party enters the courtyard and is confronted with the sky glowing green and huge masses suspended in the air.

PC: The Breach! It’s…

Dorian: Everywhere.

  • Blackwall: I’ve forgotten what the sky was like before.
  • Cassandra: The Elder One and his Venatori. They are the ones who opened the Breach.
  • Iron Bull: Shit. You can fit a lot of demons though that thing.
  • Sera: Don’t look up. Don’t look up. Don’t look— shit, I looked.
  • Solas: The veil is shattered. There is no boundary between the world and the Fade.
  • Varric: Used to be, it was only dwarves who were afraid of the sky. Now, it’s just good sense.
  • Vivienne: Enjoy the view, my dears. This is the Elder One’s power.

The party continues up the stairs and encounters a rift. The PC closes it and heads up to another rift that they defeat and close as well. Massive red lyrium spires tower through the area. The party then enters the Upper Royal Wing.

If Connor was met in Redcliffe:

Connor: I am not a child! I can resist you!

Demon: I am you.

Connor: No!

Connor kills himself and the demon vanishes.

Dialogue options:

1 - General: We could have helped.

PC: Why did he do that? We could have helped him.

Dorian: We will help him by making sure this never happens.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: Connor, no!

PC: Connor!

Dorian: It was an act of courage. He knew there was no other way to resist.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: Those bastards!

PC: How can those bastards want a world like this?

Dorian: They want it to be just like the world of old Tevinter. Comforting, isn’t it?

Scene continues. [4]

  • Dorian: He resisted that demon to the last.
  • Solas: What a terrible waste.
  • Vivienne: He chose death before falling to a demon. Very brave.

The party continues.

Dorian: What became of Felix? Do you know?

Leliana: Yes, I know.

Dorian: And you’re not going to tell me?

Leliana: You’ll find out soon enough.

The party travels into the lower Royal Wing and enters a room where Venatori are fighting demons that are coming out of a rift. The party defeats them all.

  • Blackwall: The main hall is that way. I’m sure that’s where Alexius is hiding.
  • Cassandra: This way to the main hall. Alexius will likely be there.
  • Iron Bull: The main hall. Alexius is close.
  • Sera: Is that the way to the main hall? It didn’t look like that before.
  • Solas: The magister’s grown paranoid. He’s barricaded himself in there and will not come out.
  • Varric: You’ve got to love what Alexius has done with the place.
  • Vivienne: We’ve almost reached the main hall. Alexius is close.

The PC picks up a red lyrium shard off a corpse.

Dorian: What in Andraste’s name is that? Hold onto it. I want to look at it later.

The PC approaches a massive door that is locked at the end of the room. The lyrium shard seems to fit into place.

Dorian: Maker’s breath! Where did Alexius find this? How did he even move it here?

PC: Can we open it?

Dorian: Perhaps, but it looks quite strong. How desperate and paranoid must he be? His servants must have a way through. He has to eat. Let’s look around.

The PC takes off to find more shards and heads back into the Upper Royal Wing.

Dorian: How much damage did Alexius’s spell do?

Leliana: Rifts tore apart all of southern Thedas, starting here. But whether that’s his doing or the Breach, who can say?

The party continues on and finds the guard’s dining hall. There are numerous Venatori, marksmen, and a spellbinder.

If PC enters through main doorIf PC enters through back door
  • Cassandra (whispering): There might be a better way in.
  • Dorian: They’re right there, perhaps we should find another way in.
  • Sera: A little close, don’t you think?
  • Cassandra: They haven’t seen us. We could take them by surprise.
  • Dorian: They haven’t noticed us yet. Good opportunity to look for higher ground?
  • Sera: Want to climb up and shoot them in the arse from above?

They begin to fight.

  • Cassandra: Kill the enchanter!
  • Dorian: Get that enchanter!
  • Sera: Kill the book guy!

They defeat the Venatori in the room.

  • Cassandra: Andraste have mercy on your souls. No one else will.
  • Dorian: Sorry for interrupting your dinner.
  • Sera: Aren’t you cute, in your little pool of guts?

The party enters into a chapel. The statue of Andraste is corrupted with red lyrium.

  • Blackwall: They’re distracted. Worshipping their Elder One. Let’s take them down before they see us.
  • Dorian: Are they praying? Let’s try to take them by surprise.
  • Varric: To busy praying to their god to watch the entrance? You just can’t find good cultists these days.

They fight.

  • Blackwall: Cover the stairs!
  • Dorian: Block the stairs!
  • Varric: Keep them off the stairs!

The party defeats the Venatori.

  • Blackwall: Where’s your Elder One now?
  • Dorian: Doesn’t look like the Elder One is interested in saving his followers.
  • Varric: The Venatori severance package stinks.

The party continues on through the ruined castle and red lyrium growths.

PC: What happened here?

  • Cassandra: Find Alexius. That’s all that matters.
  • Dorian: Somebody had very questionable tastes.
  • Varric: Venatori decorating at it’s finest.

The party moves on into the castle library where there are, surprise, more Venatori.

  • Dorian: Try to take out that enchanter quickly.
  • Iron Bull: We can get that Vint with the book if we sneak up on him.
  • Vivienne: If you’re swift and quiet, you can kill that enchanter before he sees us.

The party fights.

  • Dorian: Block them from coming up the stairs!
  • Iron Bull: Block the stairs!
  • Vivienne: Wall off the stairs!

They defeat the Ventori.

  • Dorian: I could really go for some light reading…
  • Iron Bull: Anybody mind if I take some souvenirs? Maybe just a couple of those pronged helmets?
  • Vivienne: Well! Shall we move on, darling?

The PC collects the fifth and final lyrium shard.

Dorian: Let’s head back to the main hall. I think I know how we’ll open that door.

Escape

The party returns to the main hall and opens the door to the Throne Room to see Alexius standing near Felix’s crouched figure.

Dialogue options:

1 - Angry: You’ll pay for this.

PC: Alexius! It’s time to answer for your crimes!

Alexius: And here you are, finally.

Scene continues. [6]

2 - Pleased: I hoped I’d find you here.

PC: I was worried I’d have to search the whole castle for you, Alexius.

Alexius: There is no longer anywhere to run.

Scene continues. [6]

3 - Sad: How could you do all this?

PC: Look at what you’ve done, Alexius! All this suffering, and for what?

Alexius: For my country, for my son… but it means nothing now.

Scene continues. [6]

4 - Surprised: You’re here alone?

PC: No Venatori this time Alexius? Where is the trap? The guards?

Alexius: There is no longer any point.

Scene continues. [6]

5 - Stoic: Let’s finish this.

PC: It’s over, Alexius.

Alexius: So it is.

Scene continues. [6]

6 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Alexius: I knew you would appear again. Not that it would be now. But I knew I hadn’t destroyed you. My final failure.

Dorian: Was it worth it? Everything you did to the world? To yourself?

Alexius: It doesn’t matter now. All we can do is wait for the end.

Dialogue options:

7 - General: “The end”?

PC: What do you mean? What’s ending?

Alexius(Chuckles.) The irony that you should appear now, of all the possibilities.

Scene continues. [10]

8 - General: I was expecting a fight.

PC: I’ll admit, I was expecting a bit more fight out of you.

Alexius: Alas, I am not the foe you remember.

Scene continues. [10]

9 - General: It can be undone.

PC: It does matter. I will undo this.

Alexius: How many times have I tried? The past cannot be undone.

Scene continues. [10]

10 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Alexius: All that I fought for, all that I betrayed, and what have I wrought? Ruin and death. There is nothing else. The Elder One comes: for me, for you, for us all.

Leliana sneaks up behind Felix and grabs him as she draws a dagger and hold it to his throat. Felix lets out a feeble cry and is a ragdoll in Leliana’s grasp.

Alexius: Felix!

Dorian: That’s Felix? Maker’s breath, Alexius, what have you done?

Alexius: He would have died, Dorian! I saved him!

Alexius (to Leliana): Please, don’t hurt my son. I’ll do anything you ask.

Dialogue options:

11 - General: Give us the amulet.

PC: Hand over the amulet, and we let him go.

Alexius: Let him go, and I swear you’ll get what you want.

LelianaI want the world back.

Scene continues. [14]

12 - General: Release him, Leliana.

PC: Leliana, let Felix go. He’s innocent.

Leliana: No one is innocent.

Scene continues. [14]

13 - General: Give him a merciful death.

PC: You didn’t save him, Alexius. No one should live like that.

Scene continues. [14]

14 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Leliana kills Felix.

Alexius: No! Nooo!!!

Alexius attacks Leliana. He opens time rifts throughout the fight as he teleports around the hall.

Alexius: I gave the world for Felix! You will not take him from me!

When using abilities:

  • Alexius: Where are your assassins this time?
  • Alexius: Your efforts are futile! This world’s already lost!
  • Alexius: The fade itself is at the Elder One’s command! What power can stop that?
  • Alexius: Victory is impossible. The Elder One will destroy us both.
  • Alexius: Your death will be my apology!

When he taunts:

  • Alexius: So much for the mighty Inquisition!
  • Alexius: Tell me again how you’re going to seal the Breach?
  • Alexius: We’ve both failed! Accept your death, as I have!

The party defeats him and Dorian kneels by his corpse.

Dorian: He wanted to die, didn’t he. All those lies he told himself, the justifications… He lost Felix long ago and didn’t even notice. Oh, Alexius…

Dialogue options:

15 - General: This must be hard for you.

PC: I know you cared for him.

Dorian: Once he was a man to whom I compared all others. Sad, isn’t it?

Scene continues. [18]

16 - General: We can still help him.

PC: This Alexius was too far gone. But the Alexius in our time might still be reasoned with.

Dorian: I suppose that’s true.

Scene continues. [18]

17 - General: I just want to go home.

PC: How do we reverse the spell?

Scene continues. [18]

18 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Dorian: This is the same amulet he used before. I think it’s the same one we made in Minrathous. That’s a relief. Give me an hour to work out the spell he used, and I should be able to reopen the rift.

Leliana: An hour? That’s impossible! You must go now!

A demonic screech shakes the castle, with the roar of a dragon.

Leliana: The Elder One.

First party commentSecond party comment
  • Blackwall: There’s a reason they won.
  • Cassandra: There is no way to win against the creature they serve.
  • Iron Bull: I was wondering when he’d show.
  • Sera: Frig. Frig! That’s how they won. How it won!
  • Solas: You cannot stay here.
  • Varric: You have to hurry. This… is bad.
  • Vivienne: Alexius was the puppet. This is his master.
  • Blackwall: We’ll go on ahead, take out as many as we can. Leliana, you’re the last line of defense. Give them what you’ve got.
  • Cassandra: We will hold the door.
  • Iron Bull: We’ll head out front. Keep them off your tail.
  • Sera: If they can make it right, make it never happen, I’ll fight. We’ll fight.
  • Solas: We’ll hold the outer door. When they get past us, it will be your turn.
  • Varric: We’ll hold the main door. Once they break through, it’s all you, Nightingale.
  • Vivienne: We’ll do whatever it takes to keep them at bay.
Dialogue options:

19 - Sad: Isn’t there another way?

PC: I can’t let you kill yourself for me. There must be another way…

Scene continues. [23]

20 - Stoic: We’ll do our best

PC: We’ll make this count.

Leliana: The only way we live is if this day never comes.

Scene continues. [23]

21 - Angry: I won’t let you die.

PC: No! I won’t let you commit suicide.

Scene continues. [23]

22 - Alarmed: I don’t think I can do this.

PC: What if… what if we don’t make it in time?

Leliana: Then this is real. This is all there will ever be.

Scene continues. [23]

23 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Leliana: Look at us. We’re already dead. The only way we live is if this day never comes.

The party members take their posts outside of the door, and Leliana prepares her bow.

Leliana: Cast your spell. You have as much time as I have arrows.

Dorian prepares the spell as the sounds of combat ensues. The doors slam open and demons and Venatori flood in, dropping the corpses of the party members that had been outside..

Leliana: Though darkness closes, I am shielded by flame.

Leliana begins shooting.

Leliana: Andraste guide me. Maker, take me to your side.

Leliana gets shot, and the PC turns towards her. Dorian grabs them.

Dorian: You move, and we all die!

Leliana begins fighting the enemies with the blunt force of her bow, beating them to death. A demon grabs hold of her as the rift opens, and the PC looks panicked and torn between staying in place and helping her when Dorian and the PC are transported back to the present. They reappear in front of Alexius.

Dorian: You’ll have to do better than that.

The Mages’ Fate

Dorian and The PC face Alexius back in the present. Alexius falls to his knees.

Dialogue options:
  • General: You must surrender.
PC: Put aside all claim to Redcliffe, and we’ll let you live.

  • General: That’s all?
PC: Is that the best you’ve got?

  • General: You’re done here.
PC: You failed Aleixus. How forgiving is your Elder One?

Alexius: You won. There’s no point extending the charade.

Alexius: Felix…

Felix: It’s going to be all right, Father.

Alexius: You will die.

Felix: Everyone dies.

Alexius is led away by Inquisition soldiers.

Dorian: Well, I’m glad that’s over with!

Ferelden troops march into the hall and take attention. Alistair/Anora follow them in.

Dorian: Or not.

Anora rules aloneAlistair rules aloneAlistair and Anora rule
Anora: Grand Enchanter Fiona.

Fiona: Queen Anora!

Anora: When I granted your mages sanctuary, I thought it was understood that they would not force my people from their homes.

Fiona: Your majesty, let me assure you, we never intended any of this…

Anora: Your intentions ceased to matter when my people were threatened. I am rescinding my offer of sanctuary. You and your followers will leave Ferelden at once.
Alistair: Grand Enchanter. Imagine how surprised I was to learn you’d given Redliffe Castle away to a Tevinter magister.

Fiona: King Alistair!

Alistair: Especially since I’m fairly sure Redcliffe belongs to Arl Teagan.

Fiona: Your majesty, we never intended…

Alistair: I know what you intended. I wanted to help you, but you’ve made it impossible. You and your followers are no longer welcome in Ferelden.
Alistair: Grand Enchanter, we’d like to discuss your abuse of our hospitality.

Fiona: Your majesties.

Anora: When we offered the mages sanctuary, we did not give them the right to drive the people from their homes.

Fiona: King Alistair, Queen Anora, I assure you, we never intended…

Anora: In light of your actions, good intentions are no longer enough.

Alistair: You and your followers have worn out your welcome. Leave Ferelden, or we’ll be forced to make you leave.

Fiona: But… we have hundreds who need protection! Where will we go?

Dialogue options:
  • General: We could offer you protection.
PC: The Inquisition might be willing to take in the mages.

  • General: We still need mages.
PC: I should point out that we did come here for mages to close the Breach.

  • General: You’ll come with us.
PC: You’ll be leaving here with the Inquisition.

Fiona: And what are the terms of this arrangement?

  • Backwall: No one fights well for their captors.
  • Cassandra (mage PC): I know you are a mage, but consider how these rebels have acted. They must be conscripted, not coddled.
  • Cassandra (non-mage PC): I suggest conscripting them. They’ve proven what they’ll do, given too much freedom.
  • Dorian: Hopefully better than what Alexius gave you. The Inquisition is better than that, yes?
  • Sera: After this? Stick them up a tower.
  • Solas: They have lost all possible supporters. The Inquisition is their only remaining chance for freedom.
  • Varric: I’ve known a lot of mages.
  • Vivienne: We need their skills, but they have proven themselves far from trustworthy.

Fiona: It seems we have little choice but to accept whatever you offer.

1 - You’re our allies.

PC: We would be honored to have you fight as allies at the Inquisition’s side.

Cassandra in partyCassandra not in party
Cassandra: We’ll discuss this later.

Fiona: I’ll pray that the rest of the Inquisition honors your promise, then.
Fiona: A generous offer. But will the rest of the Inquisition honor it?

PC: The Breach threatens all of Thedas. We cannot afford to be divided now. We can’t fight it without you. Any chance of success requires your full support.

Anora: Whether you accept this alliance or not, you will leave my kingdom.Alistair: I’d take that offer if I were you. One way or another, you’re leaving my kingdom.Alistair: It’s a generous offer. I doubt you’re going to get a better one from us.

Fiona: We accept. It would be madness not to.  I will gather my people and ready them for the journey to Haven. The Breach will be closed. You will not regret giving us this chance.

The scene fades to black.

2 - You’re our prisoners.

PC: You will surrender yourselves as prisoners and conscripts of the Inquisition.

Fiona: We shouldn’t have accepted the magister’s “help,” I know, but—

PC: The sky has been torn open. We are all in immediate danger. There is no room for failure now. We cannot close the Breach without you. But we would be mad to trust you.

Fiona: Then we have no choice but to surrender to the Inquisition. I’ll go prepare for the journey to Haven. The Breach will be closed. We must do what we can to restore peace to a world that sorely needs it.

The scene fades to black.

Return to Haven

The advisors are gathered in the Chantry in Haven.

Choice dependent dialogue:
Cullen: It is not a matter for debate. There will be abominations among the mages, and we must be prepared.

Josephine: If we rescind the offer of an alliance, it makes the Inquisition appear incompetent at best, and tyrannical at worst.

The PC joins the conversation.

Cullen (to PC): What were you thinking, turning mages loose with no oversight? The veil is torn open!

Dialogue options:

1 - General: They deserve freedom.

Mage PCNon-mage PC
PC: They’re not monsters. They’re people, and they deserve the same respect as anyone else.

Cullen: This is not about respect! Even the strongest mages can be overcome by demons in conditions like these!
PC: We’re not monsters. We can control ourselves without any outside help.

Cullen: This is not an issue of self-control! Even the strongest mages can be overcome by demons in conditions like these!

Cassandra was at RedcliffeCassandra was not at Redcliffe
Cullen: You were there, Seeker! Why didn’t you intervene?

Cassandra: While I may not completely agree with the decision, I support it.
Cassandra: Enough Arguing! None of us were there. We cannot afford to second-guess our people.

Scene continues.[5]

2 - General: Consider this their probation.

PC: Give them their freedom for now. If they prove they can’t handle it, impose restrictions.

Cullen: And how many lives will be lost if they fall? With the veil broken, the threat of possession…

Cassandra was at RedcliffeCassandra was not at Redcliffe

Cassandra: While I may not completely agree with the decision, I support it.
Cassandra: Enough Arguing! None of us were there. We cannot afford to second-guess our people.

Scene continues.[5]

3 - General: I lied to them.

PC: I just said that to get them here. By all means, tell the templars when they’re through helping us.

Leliana: If we’re just going to imprison them again, you shouldn’t have given them false hope!

Cassandra was at RedcliffeCassandra was not at Redcliffe

Cassandra: While I may not completely agree with the decision, I support it.
Cassandra: Enough Arguing! None of us were there. We cannot afford to second-guess our people.

4 - General: We need their cooperation.

PC: We need them to close the Breach. It’s not going to work if we make enemies of them.

Cullen: I know we need them for the breach, but they could do as much damage as the demons themselves!

Cassandra was at RedcliffeCassandra was not at Redcliffe

Return to choice selection

Cassandra: The sole point of the Herald’s mission was to gain the mages’ aid, and that was accomplished.

Dorian appears from the shadows and joins the conversation as well.

Dorian: The voice of pragmatism speaks! And here I was just starting to enjoy the circular arguments.

Cassandra: Closing the Breach is all that matters.

Dialogue options:

6 - Underworld: We’ll need lyrium. I can help.

PC: Closing the Breach will require a lot of magic, and that means lyrium. I have contacts who can help.

Leliana: “Contacts” meaning smugglers? Send them word. We need every advantage.

Cullen: We have legitimate lyrium supply lines already.

Leliana: And they don’t need to hear of this.

Josephine: Keep it under the table, and I’ll do what I can to quiet rumors.

Scene continues. [10]

7 - General: The sooner the better.

PC: The longer the Breach is open, the more damage it does. We should head there as soon as possible.

Josephine: Agreed.

Scene continues. [10]

8 - General: I saw what’s at stake.

PC: I got a taste of the consequences if we fail. Let’s make sure we don’t.

Cassandra: We will not fail.

Scene continues. [10]

9 - General: Let’s go now.

PC: I’m ready. Let’s go.

Scene continues. [10]

10 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Leliana: We should look into the things you saw in this “dark future.” The assassination of Empress Celene? A demon army?

Dorian: Sounds like something a Tevinter cult might do. Orlais falls, the Imperium rises. Chaos for everyone!

Cullen: One battle at a time. It’s going to take time to organize our troops and the mage recruits. Let’s take this to the war room.

Cullen (to the PC): Join us. None of this means anything without your mark, after all.

Dialogue options:

11 - General: I’d be honored.

PC: Thank you. I’d be honored to help with the plan.

Scene continues. [14]

12 - General: There goes my nap.

PC: And I’d hoped to sit out the assault on the Breach. That a nap. Maybe go for a walk…

Cullen: What is it they say? “No rest for the wicked”?

Scene continues. [14]

13 - General: I’ll be there.

PC: Of course.

Scene continues. [14]

Josephine: Meet us there when you’re ready.

Dorian: I’ll skip the war council, but I would like to see this Breach up close, if you don’t mind.

PC: Then you’re… staying?

Dorian: Oh, didn’t I mention? The South is so charming and rustic. I adore it to little pieces.

Dialogue options:

15 - You want to stay?

PC: I must admit, I’m surprised.

Dorian: We both saw what could happen, what this “Elder One” and his cult are trying to do. Not everyone from Tevinter is terrible. Some of us have fought for aeons against this sort of madness. It’s my duty to stand with you. That future will not come to pass.

Return to dialogue tree.

16 - I’m glad you’re staying.

PC: There’s no one I’d rather be stranded in time with, future or present.

Dorian: Excellent choice! But let’s not get “stranded” again anytime soon, yes?

Scene continues. [19]

17 - We’ll keep an eye on you.

PC: Stay if you must, but you’ll be watched.

Dorian: Watch away. I have nothing to hide, and evidently plenty to prove.

Scene continues. [19]

18 - I don’t want you here.

PC: I never asked for your help.

Dorian: No, you didn’t. Yet it’s my homeland that’s involved, isn’t it?

PC: That’s exactly why I don’t want you here.

Dorian: I suppose I could argue, but if you won’t support me, I doubt the others will. Have it your way. I’ll do what I can from afar.

Dorian leaves.

Scene continues. [19]

19 - Scene continues.
