Foreboding
Rook meets with Evka and Antoine in the Hossberg Wetlands.
Evka: Rook. Welcome to the Hossberg Wetlands. I’d say make yourself comfortable…
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Rook: I could sense blight before we were through the eluvian. What’s happening?Antoine: That’s the question, isn’t it? Or one of them. | Rook: This place is…Evka: Foreboding?Antoine: Yes. Well, foreboding is normal here. But it’s worse than usual. |
Evka: The blight’s always a problem in the Anderfels. It’s not strange to find a corrupted patch of forest or swamp.
Antoine: What is strange is the sudden surge of blight through the Hossberg Wetlands. Much like the village you found, the blight here struck too quickly. And in strange forms.
Evka: It’s choked the whole area. And the local village—Lavendel—was caught in it. But there’s survivors. We can be grateful for that.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: It’s good you’re here. [1]
- Stoic: This is only the beginning. [2]
- Afraid: This is really bad. [3]
- Angry: I knew this would happen. [4]
- Grey Warden: It’s our duty to fix this. [5]
1 - Affable: It’s good you’re here.
Rook: If there was a place that needed Wardens…
Evka: Then here we are.
2 - Stoic: This is only the beginning.
Rook: It only gets worse from here.
Evka: We’ve got the same feeling.
3 - Afraid: This is really bad.
Rook: If the blight keeps spreading… we could lose everything.
Antoine: You said what came next would be bad. That’s why we’re here. To help.
4 - Angry: I knew this would happen.
Rook: Damn it. I said things were different.
Antoine: We know.
Evka: We’re trying to prove the same thing.
5 - Grey Warden: It’s our duty to fix this.
Rook: How many people are here? We need to help them.
Antoine: Of course. Evka and I are doing what we can.
Evka: So you keep your eye on the big picture for now.
6 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Antoine: As far as we can tell, the gods you’re chasing weren’t here directly.
Evka: If the blight’s really changed, then the changes are widespread. As for how much…
Antoine: I… I can almost sense something in there. Another sound under the blight’s usual song.
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Rook: Sensing the blight is one thing. What you’re saying is… concerning. | Rook: Stories say Wardens sense blight. I never thought it was literal.Antoine: It happens when you join the Order. But that’s more than I should say. |
Evka: When we met, you tried to block the sound out. Now you hear too much.
Antoine: If it helps… that’s what we’re here for.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: I’m a little worried now. [7]
- Sarcastic: I’m used to bad situations. [8]
- Stoic: We need a plan. [9]
- Crow/Lord/Watcher: Warden initiation sounds bad. [10]
7 - Affable: I’m a little worried now.
Rook: Should I be worried?
Antoine: About me? Non. About the blight? Yes. But you already are.
8 - Sarcastic: I’m used to bad situations.
Rook: Okay. This all sounds awful. And we’re standing in the middle of it. Which is normal for me.
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Evka: (Chuckles) We know. | Antoine: (Laughs) For us too. |
Rook: So what’s the plan?
9 - Stoic: We need a plan.
Rook: All right. Tell me there’s a plan.
10 - Crow/Lord/Watcher: Warden initiation sounds bad.
Antivan Crow | Lord of Fortune | Mourn Watcher |
---|---|---|
Rook: Become a Warden. Hear the blight. And people assume Crow initiations are intense.Antoine: I assumed they were murderous.Rook: I walked into that. So what’s the plan? | Rook: Become a Warden. Hear the blight. Kind of a bad trade. The Lords just throw a party.Antoine: The Wardens throw parties. Sometimes. Sometimes they’re even fun.Rook: (Laughs) I’d like to see that. So what’s the plan? | Rook: Become a Warden. Hear the blight. And people think Watcher initiations are scary.Antoine: Do you work with spirits? That’s not so bad. Demons, though… I don’t like demons.Rook: Things can get… restless in the Necropolis. Anyway, what’s the plan? |
11 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.Evka: We heard rumors of the surge here and volunteered to investigate. The First Warden expects a report. Soon.
Antoine: If we want proof the blight’s changed, then this place is where to find it.
Evka: But the way the blight left the village—we’ve had our hands full just keeping it back and helping the sick.
Rook: You need more to study.
Antoine: Yes! The odd growths the blight has formed—like boils. They surround Lavendel. I need more samples.
Dialogue options:
- Investigate: You two research the blight? [12]
- Affable: Glad we can work together. [13]
- Sarcastic: Samples. That will be gross. [14]
- Stoic: I’m on it. [15]
12 - Investigate: You two research the blight?
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Rook: So you two are studying the blight?Antoine: We already had a reputation for following the weird stuff.Evka: And it’s only gotten weirder.Antoine: To help, we need to know what we’re dealing with. | Rook: So you two study the blight?Antoine: Formally? No. Well, maybe. It depends on your definition.Evka: We travel a lot. And tend to get sidetracked by weird problems.Antoine: Who knew I’d roam so far from Orlais? If we want to help, we need to learn what we’re dealing with. |
13 - Affable: Glad we can work together.
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Rook: It’s a good thing another Warden showed up.Evka: Even if it’s you.Rook: You collapse a building to seal off darkspawn one time…Evka: And get us all in trouble.Antoine: (Laughs) Worth it. You know we like you. So be careful out there.Rook: I will. I’ll be back as soon as I can. | Rook: I’ll see what I can do. This place is lucky to have you.Evka: Trying to make us like you?Rook: Is it working?Antoine: (Laughs) I’m not complaining. I’ll give you something to contain the blight. Oh! And watch for darkspawn.Evka: Can’t sing our praises if you’re dead.Rook: Good point. See you soon. |
Scene ends. Return to previous tree.
14 - Sarcastic: Samples. That will be gross.
Rook: Samples. That’s going to be… gross. That’s probably the best word for it.
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Evka: Probably. Just be careful.Rook: You know me.Evka: Last time we met, you dropped a building on a pack of darkspawn.Rook: You might know me too well.Antoine: Get back when you can. | Antoine: I’ll give you something to contain the blight. And watch for darkspawn out there.Rook: Right. Darkspawn. Can’t forget them.Evka: Good luck. |
Scene ends. Return to previous tree.
15 - Stoic: I’m on it.
Rook: Leave it to me.
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Antoine: Ah, merci! I knew we could count on you.Evka: Just be careful out there. Even for a Warden, it’s not pretty.Rook: Things looked bad before we saved that village up north.Evka: You saved that village by collapsing a building. The First Warden was furious at us.Antoine: But we did the right thing. It might go better this time.Rook: I’ll get back as soon as I can. | Antoine: You can’t just handle blight. I’ll give you something to contain it. And watch for darkspawn.Rook: I’ll try not to die.Antoine: We’d prefer you didn’t!Evka: So be careful. |
Scene ends. Return to previous tree.
Gathering Samples
The party heads into Lavendel.
Rook: All right, let’s find those boil samples. Looks like there’s caves on the far side of the village. We can start there.
Rook tries to enter the nearby gate.
Rook: Huh. Something’s blocking it from the other side.
They walk back to Antoine and Evka. (I think this ambient is bugged?)
Antoine: It’s hard to tell. But just keeping blight from the village…
Evka: That comes first. It has to. Then we figure out the rest.
Antoine: (Laughs.) Of course. That’s what we do.
They turn back through the village.
Rook: There. That’s our blight boil.
They collect the first sample.
Rook: Got a sample. I’m guessing they’ll need more than one.
- Bellara: It’s fascinating. And also gross. And very bad.
- Davrin: Knowing how Antoine experiments, yes.
- Emmrich: Multiple samples improve the accuracy of any study! Unpleasant though the gathering process may be.
- Harding: I’ve seen how Antoine performs experiments. He’ll need more than one.
- Lucanis: Of course they will.
- Neve: I’d love to say we can move with less evidence. I shouldn’t, but I’d love to.
- Taash: Ugh. Fine.
They continue on until they find another boil.
Rook: Got the sample.
- Emmrich: Not the cleanest of endeavors, but we’re making fine progress!
- Harding: We’re getting there.
- Lucanis: Mierda.
- Neve: Lovely.
- Taash: Ugh.
As they keep looking, they’re attacked by darkspawn.
- Davrin: Darkspawn! Don’t drop your guard!
- Rook: Darkspawn! Everyone ready?
Rook: Everyone all right?
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Davrin/Emmrich/Neve not in party:
|
|
They collect another sample.
Rook: Got it.
- Bellara: First at D’Meta’s Crossing. Now Lavendel. This could be the whole world.
- Davrin: I’ve never seen a surge like this.
- Emmrich: If the gods spread blight, imagine the entire world remade like these infested wetlands.
- Harding: You hear stories of blight in Ferelden. I’d seen bits of it. But not like D’Meta’s Crossing. Not like here.
- Lucanis: D’Meta’s Crossing. Now this. If this is a window into what the gods can do with the blight… (Irritated sigh)
- Neve: First at D’Meta’s Crossing, now here. And the gods are just getting started.
The party continues, finding a blight covered ballista.
Rook: Check out the ballista. Could be useful.
They destroy the blight on it.
- Davrin: (Laughs) You just want to shoot stuff.
- Lucanis: Rook. Are you looking for an excuse to fire that thing?
- Taash: (Laughs) Nice.
They collect another sample, and a giant darkspawn bursts through the nearby wall.
Rook: An ogre!
- Bellara: I think it knows we were attacking the boils! And it doesn’t seem happy about it!
- Davrin: I think it sensed us attacking the boils. It’s not happy!
- Harding: Blight and darkspawn are connected. Did it sense us going after the boils?
- Lucanis: Is it mad about the boils? Or just mad in general?
- Neve: Blight and darkspawn’s all connected right? Maybe it’s mad we attacked the boils!
- Taash: Hey! Messing with the blight boils made it mad!
Rook: We need to stop it!
They defeat the ogre and collect the last sample.
Rook: It’s down.
Rook: And another sample.
- Bellara: That should be enough to study.
- Emmrich: That must be enough for an analysis.
- Davrin: I think we’ve got enough.
- Harding: That’s got to be enough samples.
- Lucanis: That must be enough samples.
- Neve: Seems like enough to me.
Rook: Yeah. Let’s get back to Evka and Antoine.
Voices in the Blight
They return with the samples.
Mysterious sounds: (Ominous chanting) [Fun fact: The files label this voice as Elgar’nan]
Evka: Antoine? Antoine!
Antoine distractedly replies, having a hard time pulling himself away from the sample.
Antoine: Yes? Ah. Yes. The blight samples. They’re like nothing we’ve seen. Or anything in the Warden records.
Grey Warden Rook | Non-Grey Warden Rook |
---|---|
Antoine: And Rook, I believed you, but to hear it… I almost hear voices in it. The gods calling the blight. | Antoine: And I can… I almost hear voices in it. The gods calling the blight.Rook: I can’t hear anything. But if you believe me… |
Evka: We knew things were bad. But if the blight’s being called, the situation’s more unpredictable than we thought. We need to—
The First Warden walks up.
First Warden: I give you two rein, and this is where it leads? Chasing Rook’s lies?
Rook: First Warden, I—
Origin dependent dialogue:
First Warden: You were told to stay away. Or does your allegiance to us no longer matter?
Dialogue options:
- Affable: Of course it does! [1]
- Sarcastic: There’s no winning here. [2]
+ Lucanis Approves
+ Neve Approves - Stoic: I have a higher allegiance. [3]
+ Lucanis Approves - Angry: What do you want from me? [4]
+ Neve Approves
+ Taash Approves
1 - Affable: Of course it does!
Rook: Of course it does. Fighting the blight matters. That’s why I’m here.
First Warden: You’re here for your ego, not for us.
2 - Sarcastic: There’s no winning here.
Rook: Is there any answer that would be good enough for you?
Evka: Rook.
Rook: Yeah. Didn’t think so.
3 - Stoic: I have a higher allegiance.
Rook: My allegiance is to all of Thedas. If you won’t listen—
First Warden: Finish that thought, and I promise you’ll pay the price for your insolence.
4 - Angry: What do you want from me?
Rook: What do you want me to do? Stick my head up my ass and pretend nothing’s happening?
Antoine: [They don’t] mean that.
First Warden: Stay away from the blight and the Wardens. How many times must you be told?
Dialogue options:
- Affable: We really found something. [1]
- Sarcastic: How should I know? [2]
+ Neve Approves - Stoic: Until I get through to you. [3]
+ Lucanis Approves
+ Taash Approves - Shadow Dragon: You don’t scare me. [4]
+ Neve Approves
+ Lucanis Approves - Veil Jumper: Your rules won’t save you. [5]
1 - Affable: We really found something.
Rook: Okay, but we’ve found evidence. Evka and Antoine—
First Warden: Are too easily distracted.
2 - Sarcastic: How should I know?
Rook: I don’t know. Try it again.
First Warden: If you think posturing will gain you ground, you’re mistaken.
3 - Stoic: Until I get through to you.
Rook: Until you listen, I’ll be here.
Evka: Not helping.
4 - Shadow Dragon: You don’t scare me.
Rook: Do you think titles and bluster scare me?
First Warden: And your venom is better directed toward your magisters.
5 - Veil Jumper: Your rules won’t save you.
Rook: Do you know what happens when reality throws rules out the window? I do. You adapt your plans, or you die.
First Warden: Save the speech for your friends in Arlathan.
6 - Scene continues.
Evka: Rook knew something was wrong.
Antoine: I can hear it in the samples. The gods… [They’re] telling the truth. The blight has changed. And that changes everything.
First Warden: It changes nothing. Your sensitivity to blight is useful, Warden Antoine. But you’ve had more than one snake in your ear.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: We can work together. [7]
+ Bellara Approves
+ Emmrich Approves - Sarcastic: You won’t listen, will you? [8]
- Stoic: Back off. [9]
+ Davrin Approves
+ Harding Approves - Grey Warden: I’m on your side! [10]
+ Bellara Approves
+ Emmrich Approves
7 - Affable: We can work together.
Rook: No one here wants blight to spread. We can work together.
First Warden: You’re in no place to make offers.
8 - Sarcastic: You won’t listen, will you?
Rook: Why listen to the experts? You’ve clearly got this handled.
First Warden: That’s enough from you.
9 - Stoic: Back off.
Rook: He’s trying to help.
First Warden: Enough.
10 - Grey Warden: I’m on your side!
Rook: I took the same vows as you. We’re on the same side.
First Warden: You’re on thin ice.
11 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.First Warden: You tampered with a ritual that unleashed blight. You did not know what you were doing then, and you don’t now.
Evka: If gods control the blight, we need to change how we approach it—
First Warden: Archdemons control blight, and we’d sense if one had risen. We’d make the sacrifices needed to fight it.
Antoine: But we—
First Warden: The blight has increased. Now is not the time to lose focus. Wardens Evka and Antoine, are you sworn to combat the blight?
Evka: Yes, but—
First Warden: Then report back to Weisshaupt and do so.
He leaves.
Evka: That went poorly. Even for a talk with him.
Dialogue options:
- Affable: I’m sorry you’re in trouble. [12]
- Sarcastic: Do talks with him go well? [13]
- Stoic: He’s an asshole. [14]
- Grey Warden: He’s trying to push me out. [15]
12 - Affable: I’m sorry you’re in trouble.
Rook: It’s my fault you’re in trouble.
Antoine: Ah, he’s never really liked us.
Rook: So much for convincing the Wardens.
Antoine: We can’t give you the Order, but you have us.
Evka: We’ll keep tracking the darkspawn, and the blight. We’ll do what we can.
Antoine: And if we learn the gods’ plans, you will, too.
13 - Sarcastic: Do talks with him go well?
Rook: Are talks with him ever pleasant?
Antoine: We talked about the rain once. It was neutral.
Rook: So much for convincing the Wardens.
Antoine: We can’t give you the Order, but you have us.
Evka: We’ll keep tracking the darkspawn, and the blight. We’ll do what we can.
Antoine: And if we learn the gods’ plans, you will, too.
14 - Stoic: He’s an asshole.
Rook: What an asshole. A lot of people are going to die for his arrogance.
Evka: Maybe.
Rook: So much for convincing the Wardens.
Antoine: We can’t give you the Order, but you have us.
Evka: We’ll keep tracking the darkspawn, and the blight. We’ll do what we can.
Antoine: And if we learn the gods’ plans, you will, too.
15 - Grey Warden: He’s trying to push me out.
Rook: I’m a Warden. I know what I’m doing. Why won’t he listen?
Evka: You’re a good Warden. And don’t catch yourself thinking otherwise.
Rook: Maybe. But I need the Order’s help.
Evka: There’s you, Davrin, me, and Antoine. We make it work with the four of us. You and Davrin work with your new friends. Antoine and I will track darkspawn, and the blight.
Antoine: In so-called peace, vigilance. If we learn the gods’ plans, you will, too.
16 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree. The scene fades, and one of Varric’s narratives cuts in.
Varric: The elven god of monsters had been hard at work. She’d taken the darkspawn and made them so much worse. Now, she and Elgar’nan had their glorious new army. The risen gods were ready. And they had just the target.
