Professor Volkarin

Rook arrives at the Grand Necropolis with Bellara.

Rook: This is it. But no sign of the professor.

Bellara: I hope he’s here. And that he doesn’t mind us disturbing him. He is a senior necromancer, I don’t—(Gasps) Oh!

Nearby, a skeleton is brought to life. The necromancer turns, a glowing skull where his head should be.

Emmrich: Visitors! What a marvelous surprise! Any trouble with the lift? Our last guests were stuck for hours, poor souls!

He removes the glamor, and the skull vanishes.

Emmrich: Professor Emmrich Volkarin, of the Mourn Watch.

Bellara: Hello, Professor! We’ve never met, well, in person, but I’ve been writing to you.

Bellara rushes up to him, taking his hand, and he shakes it vigorously.

Emmrich: Bellara? My dear girl, what a pleasure! Surely you didn’t come all this way just to see me?

Bellara: Umm, actually we did. You see, we need a Fade expert—

Rook: (Coughs)

Origin dependent dialogue:

Rook: Rook. Fellow Mourn Watcher.

Emmrich: Rook! Myrna’s mentioned you.

Dialogue options:

1 - Affable: Good things, I hope.

Rook: Nothing to scare you off?

Emmrich: She said you’ve “advanced adequately” through the ranks.

Rook: Aw. How sweet.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - Sarcastic: Good control on the skeletons.

Rook: Impressive flock of undead.

Emmrich: Oh, merely the gifts of experience.

Rook: The more the merrier.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - Stoic: Of course she did.

Rook: So the Necropolis is still a cauldron of gossip.

Emmrich: You know how it is.

Rook: Some things never change.

Scene continues. [4]

Return to origin choice

(Distant, piercing scream)

They look down the hall.

Emmrich: I’d be pleased to continue our conversation after I tend to some small business here.

They begin to make their way into the Necropolis.

Emmrich: I must investigate. Would you two mind accompanying me further into the Shrouded Halls?

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: Never thought I’d actually see this place for myself.

Emmrich: Things have changed since you left the order, Rook.
Rook: Toward that screaming?

Emmrich: Something’s gone awry in this part of the Necropolis, Rook.

Emmrich: The dead stir more easily than they should.

Bellara not chosen for party:

Bellara stops to look at some nearby magical artifacts.

Bellara: Oh, wow. I’ve never seen anything like this. Are these wards?

Emmrich: Indeed they are. But what’s caused the Aphotic Needles to fall into a slumber?

Bellara: Oh, I’m pretty handy with artifacts. I can take a look!

Emmrich: That would be good of you, Bellara. Your friends and I will press on.

Bellara: Right, Professor. Good luck!

They follow Emmrich.

  • Bellara: Something weird up ahead.
  • Davrin: What’s that ahead?
  • Harding: I think something’s ahead?
  • Lucanis: Movement up ahead.
  • Neve: Something’s moving. Up ahead.
  • Taash: Ahead of us. Something’s moving.

Emmrich: Strange. These halls should be under the protection of the bell…

They head into a room shrouded in fog.

Rook: Is that a despair demon?

Emmrich: Fascinating, isn’t it? They shouldn’t be able to breach the Shrouded Halls at all!

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: The Necropolis always surprises.Rook: Take your word for it!

Emmrich: Careful, Rook! It’s singled you out!

The area goes dark, and the party disappears.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: Okay, Despair separated us. Don’t panic, that’s what this spirit wants.Rook: What? Where’d everyone go?

They defeat the despair demon.

Emmrich: It’s vital we discover why that spirit manifested here.

Rook: Lead the way, Professor.

He opens a nearby door, and they continue into a large room full of barriers.

Emmrich: Someone’s barred the door and chained the Sunken Star!

Rook: There’s undead here.

Emmrich: We may need to defend ourselves, depending on their condition.

Undead begin to rise, and they fight.

Rook: Haven’t fought undead in a while!

Emmrich: There’s no reaching these. They’re mindless.

Mourn Watcher Rook:

Rook: I feel it. What a waste.

  • Bellara: What does that mean?
  • Davrin: I thought you could control them?
  • Harding: You can’t control them?
  • Lucanis: Aren’t you a necromancer?
  • Neve: So you can’t control them.
  • Taash: What are they doing? Make them stop!

Emmrich: I’m afraid sometimes the weaker dead work themselves into frenzies, poor things.

Gathering Wisps

They defeat the undead.

Emmrich: I must free that bell.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: If you need another Watcher, I can help.Rook: Need some help?

Emmrich: Thank you. The Star—the bell—can banish these despair spirits if we unchain it. We’ll need a wisp to unseal the doors leading out. Could you please find one and bring it here?

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: Do you think they still remember me?

Emmrich: Rook, you know a wisp will follow a Watcher when called.
Rook: Okay. How?

Emmrich: Give your greetings, and the wisp will follow.

Rook picks up the wisp.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: Hail the eyes of the dead.

(Pleased whispers)

  • Bellara: Right. Eyes of the dead. Definitely what I was thinking about.
    Rook: It’s Watcher tradition!

  • Davrin: Are you talking to a wisp?
    Rook: It’s Watcher tradition!

  • Harding: Hail the eyes of the dead.
    Rook: Uh… Harding?
Harding: I thought I had to repeat after you, like in the Chantry.

  • Lucanis: Why just the eyes? That makes no sense.
    Rook: It’s Watcher tradition!

  • Have not flirted with Neve
Neve: So that’s practical, ceremony, or both?
    Rook: It’s Watcher tradition!

  • Flirted with Neve:
Neve: Well, look at you at work.
Rook: Watchers know a thing or two.

  • Taash: What was that? What are you doing?
    Rook: It’s Watcher tradition!
Mage Rook:

Rook: I’m a mage, but I’ve never carried a wisp around.

Emmrich: Oh, do try it more often. They’re most cooperative.

Non-Mage Rook:

Rook: Hello?

Emmrich: Wisps are the simplest of spirits, but quite helpful.

Emmrich: Bring the wisp here, and we can unseal the doors.

If Rook loses the wisp:

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: And it’s gone. I forgot that even Necropolis wisps are fickle.

Emmrich: It’ll have manifested again in the same area.
Rook: The wisp’s gone!

Emmrich: Their attention drifts. It should reappear where you first found it.

Rook places the wisp.

Rook: Door’s open! Where to now?

Emmrich: This should lead us to the upper chambers, where we can free the bell. There’s someone I’d like to consult with on the way.

They continue, finding more barriers as they go.

Bellara in partyBellara not in party
Bellara: I hope we can help here, Professor.

Emmrich: You already have, Bellara. And it’s just Emmrich, please.

Bellara: Right, Professor!

Emmrich: I assume your visit has to do with recent upheavals we’ve sensed in the Fade?

Bellara: Oh, just a little.
Rook: So, Professor—

Emmrich: Just Emmrich, please.

Rook: You weren’t that surprised we need a Fade expert.

Emmrich: The spirits talk. Even the simplest have been clamoring about chaos in the Fade. Someone coming to consult wasn’t an “if” so much as a “when.”

They fight more undead and continue into the path of sighs. It’s covered in a frosty haze.

  • Bellara: This magic… it drains everything around it.
  • Davrin: It’s freezing. What kind of magic is this?
  • Harding: Oh, that’s cold. That’s really cold.
  • Lucanis: All that ice. More magic?
  • Neve: Chilly in here. Courtesy of a demon?
  • Taash: It’s freezing! What’s doing this?

Emmrich: Echoes of the despair spirits. Misery devouring itself. We should keep our distance. If provoked, these manifestations will shatter.

Rook inspects the doors at the far end of the hall.

Emmrich: Strange. This door shouldn’t be here.

Rook: Shouldn’t it?

Emmrich: The Necropolis rearranges itself every so often.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: You know the Necropolis. Always shuffling rooms around.

Emmrich: If only our predecessors had found better ways to predict its whims.
Emmrich: The Necropolis rearranges itself every so often.

They return to the door with wisp locks.

Rook: This is locked, too. And I didn’t see any wisps around.

Emmrich: Then I shall call for aid.

Emmrich calls some wisps.

Emmrich: They’ve answered. We’ll need to guide the wisps who’ve just arrived to the door.

Rook gets to the first wisp.

Rook: Those wisps really came just because you asked.

Emmrich: They care for us, Rook. Our ever-loyal friends amongst the dead.

They find a second wisp.

Rook: Here’s our second wisp.

  • Bellara: These are way different than some of the wisps in Arlathan.
Emmrich: I should like to meet some one day.
Bellara: I don’t know, Professor, your wisps seem less, uhh. Dangerous.

  • Davrin: Just waiting for us. Almost polite.
Emmrich: I assure you good Warden, not everything in the Necropolis is as hostile as Despair.
Davrin: Take your word for it.

  • Harding: Do they mind following us around?
Emmrich: Wisps often seek out mortal company. They’re drawn to us, as flowers turn towards a sun.
    Harding: Aw… that’s sweet.

  • Lucanis: Calmest spirit I’ve ever seen.
Emmrich: The peace of the Necropolis is a balm to many of its inhabitants.
    Lucanis: Must be nice.
Emmrich: Ah, yes. I’ve noticed you’ve company.

  • Neve: At least they don’t follow us around without asking.
Emmrich: Would you like them to accompany us?
    Neve: I’m good.

  • Taash: Hey. Death Guy. Is it staring at me?
Emmrich: It is aware of your presence, but a wisp’s senses differ from our own.
Taash: Long as it doesn’t sense its way into making a corpse walk around.

They find the last wisp.

Rook: There’s the last wisp.

Emmrich: Good. Let’s return to the door.

Corpse Whisperer

They open the door with the wisps they found.

Emmrich: Well done. Past these chambers, we’ll find some assistance with reaching the bell.

They fight more demons.

Emmrich: Despair is far more pervasive than I’d thought. We must stop who’s ever drawing these spirits here, Rook.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: Who’d be dumb enough to trespass in our Necropolis?

Emmrich: The mind reels.
Rook: You think a person’s behind all the despair demons?

Emmrich: Oh, yes. Mortals are their prime attraction.

They enter another room full of more despair demons and defeat them before continuing.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: So we use mass disruption to get rid of all these despair spirits at once?

Emmrich: Precisely. I sensed their source near the bell.
Rook: How do we get rid of all these despair demons?

Emmrich: Their source is near the bell you saw earlier.

Emmrich: Ringing it will banish them—but we must find who lured them here in the first place.

They continue through the Necropolis.

Emmrich: Tell me, Rook. Where are you from?

Rook: I spent most my life in Antiva.

Emmrich: Am I correct in guessing you’re one of the Crows?

Rook: At your service.

Emmrich: You must tell me about your journeys once we’re above ground.

Emmrich: Here we are! This is where we’ll learn who summoned these despair spirits.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Mage Rook:

Rook: It’s just corpses. I don’t sense spirits nearby.

Emmrich: You’re straining. Relax your gaze, and sift through the Fade’s currents more slowly.

Non-Mage Rook:

Rook: I don’t see any of the more helpful spirits around.

Emmrich: Mage or not, every Watcher must trust that the Necropolis answers all proper supplications.
Rook: But how?

Emmrich: You must open yourself to possibilities while in the Necropolis.

Emmrich: Would you mind lighting those braziers, Rook?

Rook lights the braziers around the room.

Emmrich: This should unseal our final path to the bell. It’s best we unchain it quickly.

  • Bellara: What’s it do exactly?
  • Davrin: What’s this magic bell do exactly?
  • Harding: And then?
  • Lucanis: Then what?
  • Neve: Right. Then what?
  • Taash: Why’s this bell so important?

Emmrich: The Sunken Star will drive away Despair. Any malicious spirit that hears the tolling of the bell will be banished to the Fade.

  • Bellara: Oh! That’d be helpful in Arlathan. But I bet it only works here, doesn’t it?
Emmrich: Quite correct. The bell would be inert outside the Necropolis.
Bellara: Still, I bet the principles could be replicated…

  • Davrin: Ring the bell, dead demons. Got it.
Emmrich: It also holds great significance in some of our equinoctial rituals.
    Davrin: You already sold me.

  • Harding: Even banishing demons is extra fancy down here.
Emmrich: It’s one of the specialties of the necromantic arts. One of our better-known ones, perhaps.
Harding: I think most people know about the undead stuff?

  • Lucanis: Any malicious spirit?
Emmrich: Unattached ones. Your own companion will be safe.
    Lucanis: Ah.

  • Neve: Handy. Could use a few of those for back home.
Emmrich: I understood Tevinter to be experienced in dealing with malign manifestations.
Neve: Oh, we are. You have to be when blood magic attracts them. Or some cultist decides to summon something on purpose. I’ll take any help I can get.

  • Taash: But it won’t destroy them? Them being here isn’t their fault.
Emmrich: No. In this instance, banishment will suffice. Though, forgive me, I had the impression our denizens unnerved you?
Taash: I’m from Rivain. Spirits are okay. So long as they’re not walking corpses around.

Rook lights all the braziers.

Emmrich: Excellent. Approach the body, and we’ll begin.

Rook joins Emmrich near the body, and he begins casting some magic.

Emmrich: By seal and flame: Who brought despair in our midst?

Mourn Watcher Corpse: (Heaving sigh)

Emmrich: Despair. Who brought it here?

Mourn Watcher Corpse: Venatori!

The corpse falls still again.

Emmrich: The Venatori. (Grunts) Of course. This way, please.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: The Watchers never taught me that.Rook: What did you just do?

Emmrich: The colloquial term is “corpse whispering.” A gift that manifested with my magic.

  • Bellara: Oh, wow. That’s amazing!
  • Davrin: “Gift” is one word for it.
  • Harding: Uh. Wow.
  • Lucanis: Talking to corpses with magic.
  • Neve: Well, there’s some luck for you.
  • Taash: Corpses talk to you? That’s messed up!
Emmrich: Oh, there’s no danger in it, I assure you.
Taash: That’s not the messed-up part!

Emmrich: Honestly, I’ve no idea how the other Watchers navigate the Necropolis without it.

They open the next gate.

Rook: Shh. Think I hear someone.

Venatori: This map is useless. We wasted three slaves in those traps! If that Hand of Glory burns down…

Irritated Venatori: So don’t dawdle.

Rook: We found those Venatori!

Emmrich: They have no place in these halls!

They fight.

Rook: What are the Venatori after? Gold? Artifacts?

Emmrich: Raw magic. Their first envoys were obsessed with gathering power for some new masters.

Rook: Ah. I’ll fill you in on them later.

The Belfry

They come across more demons and fight.

Mourn Watcher RookNon-Mourn Watcher Rook
Rook: One less spirit of despair in the Necropolis.Rook: Well, down one more despair demon.

Rook: That’s the last of them.

Emmrich: I see someone, by the crates.

Rook: I don’t think they’re Venatori.

Rook walks up to some Venatori supplies.

Rook: This looks interesting.

Emmrich: A spirit labyrinth? I didn’t know they’d learned to make miniature ones in Tevinter.

This dialogue is finicky and may not trigger if Emmrich reaches the nearby slave before you.

Rook: What’s this?

Emmrich: A vessel to store the magic the Venatori intended to siphon away from us.

They approach the person sitting nearby.

Rook: Hello? Did the Venatori bring you here?

Venatori Slave: They said… they said I’d spilled the wine too many times. That I’d be a better sacrifice than slave.

Emmrich: You are in Nevarra, sir. There are no slaves on our soil. Please remain here. After we’ve seen to the rest of the Venatori, I’ll send for someone to escort you above.

Venatori Slave: Oh. All… all right.

Rook: Those Venatori dragged that man down here just to die.

Emmrich: The Watchers will shelter him. We’ll inquire if he has family in Minrathous.

Neve in partyNeve not in party, Shadow Dragon RookOther
Neve: Might know someone who can help with that.

Emmrich: Do you, madam? We’d be grateful.
Rook: I know people in Minrathous who would help with that. Just say the word.

Emmrich: Thank you. We’d welcome the assistance.
Scene continues.

Emmrich: As for the Venatori, what remains of them will be put to work.

They continue into the upper belfry.

Emmrich: The Sunken Star can help us if we break the Venatori’s chains.

Rook: Right.

Rook begins to break the chains.

Rook: There’s one chain!

Emmrich: Excellent!

Rook breaks another chain.

Rook: Got it.

Some Venatori arrive to fight.

Venatori: Guests!

Irritated Venatori: Kill them all, but save the limbs!

Rook defeats them and breaks another chain.

Rook: There!

Rook destroys the last chain.

Rook: That’s the last chain.

Emmrich: We must return to the lower level to ring the bell.

Rook jumps down and speaks to Emmrich.

Emmrich: Be ready. The ritual to wake the bell will draw despair’s attention.

Rook: And any more Venatori.

Emmrich: I’ll need you to keep them occupied while I work.

Emmrich begins to cast.

Rook: There’s the Venatori.

They fight.

Rook: How are we doing, Emmrich?

Emmrich: The bell is slowly wakening, but we must fight a little longer!

Mourn Watcher Rook:

Rook: We’ll stop them. Watcher’s duty!

Demons join the fight.

Rook: The Venatori brought demons!

Emmrich: Typical of them!

The fight continues.

Emmrich: We’re halfway there!

A rage demon appears.

  • Bellara: Rage demon!
  • Davrin: We’ve got a rage demon!
  • Harding: That’s a rage demon!
  • Lucanis: Rage demon!
  • Neve: We’ve got a rage demon!
  • Taash: Big angry fire demon!

Emmrich: Hold fast!

They defeat the last of the demons.

Rook: Emmrich! Now what?

Emmrich: Now the Grand Necropolis shows itself!

(Bell tolls)

  • Bellara: It worked. Those despair demons are just gone!
  • Davrin: It worked. No more despair demons.
  • Harding: Wow. Those despair demons vanished!
  • Lucanis: No more despair demons. It worked.
  • Neve: Well, look at that. No more despair demons.
  • Taash: The magic bell worked. The despair demons pissed off.

Rook: Pretty impressive.

Emmrich: Thank you. But come, let’s ensure these cultists didn’t leave anything dangerous behind. I’ll ask our attendants to gather their bodies later, of course.

Rook looks around.

Rook: And this is… a severed hand.

Emmrich: It can’t be. A Hand of Glory? The Venatori should never have this. I must find out where it came from.

Emmrich: Let me know when you’d like to return to the chambers above.

None Better Qualified

The party returns to the entrance, where they meet with Myrna and Vorgoth.

Rook: I know it’s a lot, but I swear we’ve seen the blighted elven gods ourselves.

Myrna: It would explain recent oneiric disruptions.

A small skeleton appears holding a tea tray.

Vorgoth: IT HAS BEEN MANY YEARS SINCE YOU LEFT US.
