Recruitment Quest
The Lone Warden
At the crossroads in Ferelden, a farmer can be spoken to about Blackwall.
Giles: Things used to be peaceful around here.
Special: I’m looking for a Grey Warden.
PC: I’m tracking someone. A Grey Warden who might be in the area.
Giles: Ah, you must mean Blackwall. Good man. Kept us safe when the demons attacked.
PC: When the Breach opened?
Giles: The “Breach,” huh? All I know is things got bad when it opened. The Warden helped stop the demons while we got away. Without him, we would’ve… We took what we could from the farms, then the bandits came and stole all that. Made Blackwall mad as blazes, like it was the last straw or something. He conscripted the other farmers and headed after them. Down the road there. Haven’t seen them since.
1 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: Bandits? [2]
- Investigate: So this Warden helped you? [3]
- Investigate: He conscripted people? [4]
- General: I need to go find Blackwall. [5]
2 - Investigate: Bandits?
PC: Know anything about the bandits?
Giles: They were just a nuisance, threatening people along the paths for tolls and such. This time they robbed us blind. Guess the hole in the sky or Blackwall fighting demons spooked them. Made them want to stock up and run. Not sure why. Can’t exactly run from the sky.
[Back to 1]
3 - Investigate: So this Warden helped you?
PC: Blackwall fought off demons for you.
Giles: He saved us. Stood shield out, cutting them down as they came. Like nothing we’d ever seen. Said it was his duty, fighting things like that. Didn’t ask for pay or nothing, even though Wardens can take what they want. That makes some people nervous, but I say they deserve it. Especially after I saw him work.
[Back to 1]
4 - Investigate: He conscripted people?
PC: Your friends were conscripted? Did Blackwall force them to go after the bandits?
Giles: He could have. Wardens have that right, don’t they? Seems like fair trade for saving everyone from blights. Anyway, he didn’t force, he rallied. Said blights and demons are his job, but we’d have to learn to fight thieves like that ourselves. The boys didn’t argue. He really fired them up.
PC: But not you?
Giles: I’m old. And someone had to stay back.
[Back to 1]
5 - General: I need to go find Blackwall.
PC: I have to track him down. Any idea where Blackwall is now?
Giles: Can’t say. They left down the road there, following the bandits. You find him, say thanks again for me. If I were younger, I’d have followed, no question. [6]
6 - Scene continues.
The PC approaches the little hut where Blackwall and a few farmers are standing around with weapons and shields. Blackwall is clearly training them.
Blackwall: They will make this a fight, not us.
Blackwall: Line there. And there. No gaps.
Blackwall: Keep focused. They’ll know what it means.
Blackwall: Remember how to carry your shields! You’re not hiding, you’re holding. Otherwise it’s useless!
The PC approaches.
PC: Blackwall? Warden Blackwall?
Blackwall: You’re not— How do you know my name? Who sent… (Shouts.)!
An arrow flies towards the PC, but Blackwall throws up his shield just in time for it to sink into the wood.
Blackwall: That’s it. Help or get out. We’re dealing with these idiots first! Conscripts! Here they come!
Bandits attack.
Blackwall: Hold the wall men! Make them come to me!
Bandit: You’re dead, bastard! Dead!
Blackwall: I wasn’t here to fight! Stop and think!
Bandit: Too late for that! You know how this ends!
Blackwall kills the last bandit and walks away, sinking his sword into the ground. He kneels by a corpse.
Blackwall: Sorry bastards.
He gets back up and addresses the farmers.
Blackwall: Good work conscripts, even if this shouldn’t have happened. They could’ve—well, thieves are made, not born. Take back what they stole. Go back to your families. You saved yourselves.
The farmers leave and the PC approaches again.
Plot-progression specific dialogue:
- Pre-Skyhold [7]
- Post-Skyhold [29]
7 - Pre-Skyhold:
Blackwall: You’re no farmer. Why do you know my name? Who are you?
Dialogue options:
- General: Greetings are in order. [8]
- General: That depends on who you ask. [9]
- General: The Inquisition has questions. [10]
8 - General: Greetings are in order.
PC: I know your name because I’m an agent of the Inquisition. I’m investigating whether the disappearance of Wardens has anything to do with the murder of the Divine. [11]
9 - General: That depends on who you ask.
PC: I’ve been called a lot of things lately by a lot of people.
Blackwall: Well, I’m talking to you. Stop dancing.
Cassandra (if in party): We’re Inquisition, trying to find out why the Wardens disappeared and if it had anything to do with the Divine’ s murder.
Blackwall: Wait. That gear. That’s Inquisition.
PC: And we’re investigating whether missing Wardens are involved in the Divine’s death. [11]
10 - General: The Inquisition has questions.
PC: I’m here investigating Grey Wardens for the Inquisition. We’re seeing if their disappearance has anything to do with the murder of the Divine. [11]
11 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: Maker’s balls, the Wardens and the Divine? That can’t—no, you’re asking, so you don’t really know. First off, I didn’t know they disappeared. But we do that, right? No more Blight, job done. Wardens are the first thing forgotten. But one thing I’ll tell you: no Warden killed the Divine. Our purpose isn’t political.
Dialogue options:
- General: I wasn’t accusing Wardens yet. [12]
- General: Is it killing bandits? [13]
- General: Then where are the Wardens? [14]
12 - General: I wasn’t accusing Wardens yet.
PC: I’m not here to accuse. Not yet. I just need information. I’ve only found you. Where are the rest? [15]
13 - General: Is it killing bandits?
PC: What’s the Warden “purpose” got to do with throwing farmers at bandits?
Blackwall: This was different. I was in the area recruiting. Fought some demons, then I heard about the stealing. [15]
14 - General: Then where are the Wardens?
PC: So where are the rest of you? [15]
15 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: I haven’t seen any Wardens for months. I travel alone, recruiting. Not much interest because the Archdemon is a decade dead, and no need to conscript because there’s no Blight coming. Treaties give the Wardens to take what we need. Who we need. These idiots forced this fight, so I “conscripted” their victims. They had to do what I said, so I told them to stand. Next time they won’t need me. Grey Wardens can inspire, make you better than you think you are.
16 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: The treaties sound powerful. [17]
- Investigate: Where might the Wardens go? [18]
- Investigate: Why haven’t you disappeared? [19]
- Flirt: So what’s next for us? [20]
- General: Inspiring but fruitless. [21]
- General: You’re giving me nothing. [22]
17 - Investigate: The treaties sound powerful.
PC: I wasn’t aware Grey Wardens could take whatever they want.
Blackwall: It’s complicated. If there’s a Blight, everyone has to help the effort to fight it. The treaties are ancient. Outside of Blights, it’s as binding as a clever tongue can make it.
[Back to 16]
18 - Investigate: Where might the Wardens go?
PC: Do you have any idea where the other Wardens could have gone?
Blackwall: Maybe they returned to our stronghold at Weisshaupt? Thats in the Anderfels, a long way north. I don’t really know. Can’t imagine why they’d all disappear at once, let alone where they disappeared to.
[Back to 16]
19 - Investigate: Why haven’t you disappeared?
PC: Why haven’t you gone missing like the rest of them?
Blackwall: Well, maybe I was going to. Or maybe there’s a new directive, but a runner got lost or something. My job was to recruit on my own. Planned to stay that way for months. Years.
[Back to 16]
20 - Flirt: So what’s next for us?
PC: Well thank you, Warden Blackwall. But now where does this leave us? [23]
21 - General: Inspiring but fruitless.
PC: It’s been a pleasure, Warden Blackwall, but this didn’t help at all. [23]
22 - General: You’re giving me nothing.
PC: You’re no help. I’m no further ahead than I was. [23]
23 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: Inquisition… Agent, did you say? Hold a moment. The Divine is dead, and the sky is torn. Events like these, thinking we’re absent is almost as bad as thinking we’re involved. If you’re trying to put things right, maybe you need a Warden. Maybe you need me.
24 - Dialogue options:
- How can you alone help? [25]
- Yes, join the Inquisition. (Warden Blackwall will join the Inquisition.) [26]
- We don’t need a Warden. (Warden Blackwall will leave and not return.) [27]
25 - How can you alone help?
PC: The Inquisition needs all the support it can get, but what can one Grey Warden do?
Blackwall: Save the fucking world if pressed. Look, maybe fighting demons from the sky isn’t something I’m practiced at, but show me someone who is. And like I said, there are treaties. Maybe this isn’t a Blight but it’s bloody well a disaster. Some will honor them. Being a Warden means something to a lot of people.
[Back to 24]
26 - Yes, join the Inquisition.
PC: Warden Blackwall, the Inquisition accepts your offer.
Blackwall: Good to hear. We both need to know what’s going on, and perhaps I’ve been keeping to myself for too long. This Warden walks with the Inquisition. [28]
27 - We don’t need a Warden.
PC: Go your own way. A Grey Warden would just complicate matters.
Blackwall: That’s your choice to make. I’ll do what I can on my own, then. Maker guide your path, wherever it leads. [28]
28 - Scene ends.
29 - Post-Skyhold:
Blackwall: You’re Inquisition. What do you want?
Dialogue options:
- General: Greetings are in order. [30]
- General: Many things. Answers, mostly. [31]
- General: The Inquisition has questions. [32]
30 - General: Greetings are in order.
PC: My name is Inquisitor [Adaar/Cadash/Lavellan/Trevelyan]. I lead the Inquisition. We’re investigating whether the Warden disappearance is connected to Corypheus and the Divine’s murder. [33]
31 - General: Many things. Answers, mostly.
PC: The state we’re in, we need a lot of things. Right now, it’s answers.
Blackwall: Then get to asking.
Cassandra (if in party):The Inquisitor is here to find out why the Wardens disappeared, and if it had anything to do with Corypheus and the murder of the divine.
PC: I’m the Inquisitor. Your fellow Wardens disappeared, and I need to know if it has anything to do with Corypheus murdering the Divine. [33]
32 - General: The Inquisition has questions.
PC: I’m the Inquisitor. I have questions about your fellow Wardens. I need to know if their disappearance has anything to do with Corypheus and his murder of the Divine. [33]
33 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: Maker’s balls, that’s a mouthful. Wardens and who? And he killed the Divine? That makes no sense.
Varric (if in party): To me, neither, and I was there. Guy was caged by Wardens. Now he claims he’s gonna be a god.
Cassandra (if in party): It’s a creature that wardens once caged. Now it claims to be a god.
Blackwall: Bullshit. I heard something about a dragon that looked like and Archdemon, but the rest?
Blackwall: I heard something about a dragon that looked like an Archdemon and something about Old God heresy, but that’s just madness. No, Inquisitor or not, you must have it wrong. This Corypheus, or whatever, is insane or lying. I’ve never even heard his name.
Blackwall: First off, I didn’t know they disappeared. But we do that, right? No more Blight, job done. Wardens are the first thing forgotten. But one thing I’ll tell you: no Warden killed the Divine. Our purpose isn’t political.
Dialogue options:
- General: I wasn’t accusing Wardens yet. [34]
- General: Is it killing bandits? [35]
- General: Then where are the Wardens? [36]
34 - General: I wasn’t accusing Wardens yet.
PC: I’m not here to accuse. Not yet. I just need information. I’ve only found you and heard of one other. Where are the rest? [37]
35 - General: Is it killing bandits?
PC: What’s the Warden “purpose” got to do with throwing farmers at bandits?
Blackwall: This was different. I was in the area recruiting. Fought some demons, then I heard about the stealing. [37]
36 - General: Then where are the Wardens?
PC: I have leads on two Wardens, including you. Where is the rest of the Order? [37]
37 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: I haven’t seen any Wardens for months. I travel alone, recruiting. There’s little interest because of Haven, but with no real Blight, there’s no point conscripting. Treaties give the Wardens to take what we need. Who we need. These idiots forced this fight, so I “conscripted” their victims. They had to do what I said, so I told them to stand. Next time they won’t need me. Grey Wardens can inspire, make you better than you think you are.
38 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: The treaties sound powerful. [39]
- Investigate: Where might the Wardens go? [40]
- Investigate: You know nothing of Corypheus? [41]
- Investigate: Why haven’t you disappeared? [42]
- Flirt: So what’s next for us? [43]
- General: Inspiring but fruitless. [44]
- General: You’re giving me nothing. [45]
39 - Investigate: The treaties sound powerful.
PC: I wasn’t aware Grey Wardens could take whatever they want.
Blackwall: It’s complicated. If there’s a Blight, everyone has to help the effort to fight it. The treaties are ancient. Outside of Blights, it’s as binding as a clever tongue can make it.
[Back to 38]
40 - Investigate: Where might the Wardens go?
PC: Do you have any idea where the other Wardens could have gone?
Blackwall: Maybe they returned to our stronghold at Weisshaupt? Thats in the Anderfels, a long way north. I don’t really know. Can’t imagine why they’d all disappear at once, let alone where they disappeared to.
[Back to 38]
41 - Investigate: You know nothing of Corypheus?
PC: So they name Corypheus means nothing to you?
Blackwall: Well now it means I want to kill it., but I’d never heard the name Corypheus before you said it.
[Back to 38]
42 - Investigate: Why haven’t you disappeared?
PC: Why haven’t you gone missing like the rest of them?
Blackwall: Well, maybe I was going to. Or maybe there’s a new directive, but a runner got lost or something. My job was to recruit on my own. Planned to stay that way for months. Years.
[Back to 38]
43 - Flirt: So what’s next for us?
PC: Well thank you, Warden Blackwall. But now where does this leave us? [46]
44 - General: Inspiring but fruitless.
PC: It’s been a pleasure, Warden Blackwall, but this didn’t help at all. [46]
45 - General: You’re giving me nothing.
PC: You’re no help. I’m no further ahead than I was. [46]
46 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: Inquisitor, hold on a moment. With this dragon and that thing…
PC: Corypheus.
Blackwall: Right. I know my Order had nothing to do with that, but it sounds like we should. And if I’m one of the last, I should help. I mean, whatever he is, if there’s any connection to the Blight, you need a Warden.
47 - Dialogue options:
- How can you alone help? [48]
- Yes, join the Inquisition. (Warden Blackwall will join the Inquisition.) [49]
- We don’t need a Warden. (Warden Blackwall will leave and not return.) [50]
48 - How can you alone help?
PC: The Inquisition needs all the support it can get, but what can one Grey Warden do?
Blackwall: Save the fucking world if pressed. Look, maybe fighting demons from the sky isn’t something I’m practiced at, but show me someone who is. And like I said, there are treaties. Maybe this isn’t a Blight but it’s bloody well a disaster. Some will honor them. Being a Warden means something to a lot of people.
[Back to 47]
49 - Yes, join the Inquisition.
PC: Warden Blackwall, the Inquisition accepts your offer.
Blackwall: Good to hear. We both need to know what’s going on, and perhaps I’ve been keeping to myself for too long. This Warden walks with you, Inquisitor. [51]
50 - We don’t need a Warden.
PC: Go your own way. A Grey Warden would just complicate matters.
Blackwall: That’s your choice to make. I’ll do what I can on my own, then. Maker guide your path, wherever it leads. [51]
51 - Scene ends.
The Threat Remains
Cutscene: Look At It
Blackwall is staring up at the rift when the PC approaches.
Blackwall: Maker, look at it. So much easier to ignore when it’s far away. And to actually walk out of it, to be that close…
Dialogue options:
- General: I was lucky. [1]
- General: You could get closer. [2]
- General: It was nothing. [3]
1 - General: I was lucky.
PC: If I hadn’t been saved by Inquisition soldiers, I don’t know what would have happened.
Blackwall: Inquisition soldiers? That’s not what I’ve heard.
2 - General: You could get closer.
PC: It’s right there. We could take a trip, if you’re that curious.
Blackwall: I’m going to have to decline… at least until I learn more about it.
3 - General: It was nothing.
PC: I survived. Nothing to crow about.
Blackwall: Nothing to crow about? Do people normally fall out of the sky where you’re from?
Race specific dialogue:
- Non-human PC [4]
- Human PC [9]
4 - Non-human PC:
Blackwall: I have to admit, I thought you’d be…
PC: Human?
Blackwall: Yes.
Dialogue options:
- General: I don’t blame you. [5]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: At least you’re honest. [6]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: Is this a problem? [7]
5 - General: I don’t blame you.
PC: That’s not surprising. Humans are everywhere. It’s expected. [8]
6 - General: At least you’re honest.
Dalish PC: Being upfront is better than “knife-ear.”
Qunari PC: Being upfront is better than “oxman.”
Dwarf PC: At least you’re upfront. Better than “I thought you’d be taller.”
Blackwall: It was a foolish thought. Should’ve known better than to say anything. [8]
7 - General: Is this a problem?
PC: Do you object to my kind?
Blackwall. Of course not. Didn’t mean to offend. [8]
8 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: It’s what you do, and how you do it, that’s important. [14]
9 - Human PC:
Blackwall: The Breach, the Divine’s death, the Wardens… it doesn’t make sense. There’s so much we don’t know.
Dialogue options:
- General: Your help will be invaluable. [11]
- General: Is it “we” already? [12]
- General: Just follow our lead. [13]
11 - General: Your help will be invaluable.
PC: Your experience with the Wardens will certainly be useful.
Blackwall: Mostly the treaties, I expect. Old parchments you’re welcome to. [14]
12 - General: Is it “we” already?
PC: Already feeling like part of the team, I see.
Blackwall: Too soon? I thought we were building a rapport. So… you already know something of me. What about you? How do you fit into all of this? [14]
13 - General: Just follow our lead.
PC: Just be there when we need you, and don’t ask too many questions.
Blackwall (female PC): I like a woman who takes charge. [14]
14 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: Just one question then. How do you fit in with all this?
Dialogue options:
- General: I want peace. [15]
- Blackwall approves
- General: I’m not sure yet. [16]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: Some worship me. I like that. [17]
- Blackwall disapproves
15 - General: I want peace.
PC: I just want to help stop the war, try to put things back in order.
Blackwall: A worthy goal, one I’m happy to support.
16 - General: I’m not sure yet.
PC: It’s been a whirlwind. It’s hard to say where I fit.
Blackwall: I guess we’ll have to figure that out.
17 - General: Some worship me. I like that.
PC: A few of them worship me, and think I’m destined for greatness. I don’t disagree.
Blackwall: I don’t think I’ve ever met someone quite so proud of who they are. It’s… refreshing. Suppose being called “Andraste’s Herald” must go to your head.
18 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: For me, I’ll be satisfied so long as we find the bastards that killed the Divine. They owe us some answers.
Scene ends.
In Hushed Whispers
Conversation: What Was I like
The PC approaches Blackwall at Haven.
Blackwall: There was never going to be an easy answer to the mage dilemma.
Blackwall (mages allied): What you did for the mages took courage. You gave them a chance. Everyone deserves one.
Blackwall (mages conscripted): The mages are dangerous. There’s no way around it.
Blackwall: You chose for the good of us all. I can respect that.
Blackwall (if in party for IHW): I have to ask: what was I like in that dark future you saw?
Dialogue options:
- General: You were heroic. [1]
- Blackwall approves
- General: You were angry. [2]
- General: You were the same. [3]
- General: Don’t ask. [4]
1 - General: You were heroic.
PC: You fought with honor and died a hero. You did the Wardens proud.
Blackwall: Then I was worth something in the end. Thank you. [5]
2 - General: You were angry.
PC: You were furious about the circumstances.
Blackwall: Angry. Good. I’m glad I was angry. It means I never stopped caring. [5]
3 - General: You were the same.
PC: You didn’t seem much different.
Blackwall: Does that mean I remained unbroken or simply stopped caring? I guess we’ll never know. [5]
4 - General: Don’t ask.
PC: It’s better if some things are left forgotten.
Blackwall: All right. I won’t mention it again. [5]
5 - Scene ends.
Champions of the Just
Conversation: Trust
The PC approaches Blackwall at Haven.
Blackwall: Of all the things in the world… a demon who wears someone’s face. I imagine it makes trusting others risky.
Dialogue options:
- General: Trust is important. [1]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: What’s life without risk? [2]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: I don’t trust anyone. [3]
1 - General: Trust is important.
PC: Without trust, how would we build alliances? Or friendships? [4]
2 - General: What’s life without risk?
PC: Risk is what keeps life exciting, don’t you think?
Blackwall: Until you lose. [4]
3 - General: I don’t trust anyone.
PC: It’s best to rely on yourself. People are selfish.
Blackwall: A lonely way to exist, but practical. I cannot fault you for it. [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: It’s easy to speak well of trust when yours has never been misplaced.
Scene ends.
In Your Heart Shall Burn
Cutscene: So This is Skyhold
The PC walks up to Blackwall, who is looking up at the buildings of Skyhold.
Blackwall: So this is Skyhold.
He turns to the PC.
Blackwall: Come. Let’s walk the ramparts. I want to examine our fortifications.
The two of them move up to the ramparts, where Blackwall looks over the mountains.
Choice dependent dialogue:
- Recruited pre-Skyhold [1]
- Recruited pre-Skyhold, never spoken to [2]
- Recruited post-Skyhold [3]
1 - Recruited pre-Skyhold
Blackwall: We’ll be able to see Corypheus coming from miles away.
Dialogue options:
- General: We’re safe for now. [4]
- General: If we see him, he sees us. [5]
- General: And we’ll be ready for him. [6]
4 - General: We’re safe for now.
PC: Corypheus thinks we’re beaten. By the time he finds us, we’ll be legion.
Blackwall: I know soldiers. I know our soldiers. Corypheus made a hundred enemies when he kicked down our door.
Blackwall: Let him come. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it.
Blackwall (previously flirted): And when he came after you, he really made it personal. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
5 - General: If we see him, he sees us.
PC: On the other hand, that means he can see us from miles away.
Blackwall: Let him come. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
6 - General: And we’ll be ready for him.
PC: He’s not going to get the better of us again.
Blackwall: We lost good soldiers that day…loyal men and women.
Blackwall: Let him come. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it.
Blackwall (previously flirted): And when he came after you, he really made it personal. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
2 - Recruited pre-Skyhold, never spoken to:
Blackwall: Solas chose well. We’ll be able to spot an invading force from miles away. For as long as I’ve been here, we’ve never really spoken at length.
Dialogue options:
- General: No, I’m sorry. [7]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: Actions speak louder. [8]
- General: Chatting wastes time. [9]
7 - General: No, I’m sorry.
PC: We haven’t, have we. Sorry about that.
Blackwall: Don’t apologize. You have responsibilities, and I don’t need coddling. Our energies should be focused on Corypheus. He’ll pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
8 - General: Actions speak louder.
PC: Your actions told me all I needed to know.
PC (Blackwall neutral/high approval): And it seems I made the right decision by bringing you on board.
Blackwall: You’ve always had my support. You still do. Corypheus will pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
PC (Blackwall low approval): Unfortunately, it seems we disagree on crucial matters.
Blackwall: Getting Corypheus is the goal. We shouldn’t lose sight of that. Our energies should be focused on Corypheus. He’ll pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
9 - General: Chatting wastes time.
PC: I have no use for idle chatter.
Blackwall: I can respect that. It’ll serve you well now. Our energies should be focused on Corypheus. He’ll pay for Haven. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
3 - Recruited post-Skyhold
Blackwall: Skyhold is in a fine position. It will be difficult for any enemy to approach without being seen. Harder still for Corypheus, with his army and pet dragon in tow. I’d count myself lucky that I missed the assault, but I should have been there.
Dialogue options:
- General: You’ll have your chance. [10]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: Tell that to the dead. [11]
- General: No glory in that death. [12]
10 - General: You’ll have your chance.
PC: It’s not over with Corypheus. The next time we meet, you’ll be on the front line.
Blackwall: The front line, is it? I’ll hold you to that. Blackwall: I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
11 - General: Tell that to the dead.
PC: There are dozens dead who’d rather be in your position, I promise you.
Blackwall: We’ll drink to them, then avenge them. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
12 - General: No glory in that death.
PC: It was a survival. Not a battle. There was no glory in it.
Blackwall: It’s not about glory. It’s about keeping your promises. I’m a Grey Warden. He’s a darkspawn.
Blackwall (previously flirted): And when he came after you, he really made it personal. I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it.
Blackwall: I swear I’ll take that twisted bastard down, even if I have to die to do it. [13]
13 - End choice dependent dialogue.
Dialogue options:
- General: Thank you. [14]
- Blackwall slightly approves
- General: You’re taking this hard. [15]
- Blackwall slightly disapproves
- General: You’re no good to me dead. [16]
- Blackwall slightly disapproves
- Flirt: I’m not losing you. [17]
-
- Blackwall approves
14 - General: Thank you.
PC: I’m grateful for your support.
Blackwall: It’s my job, isn’t it? Killing darkspawn? Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you.
15 - General: You’re taking this hard.
PC: You see this as a personal insult, don’t you?
Blackwall: If it’s not personal for you, maybe it should be. The people flock to your banner, eager to fight for the Herald of Andraste. Their faith is a leash, and your Inquisition has taken hold of it.
16 - General: You’re no good to me dead.
PC: Watch that this enthusiasm of yours doesn’t get you killed.
Blackwall: I wouldn’t be the first to die in your service. The people flock to your banner, eager to fight for the Herald of Andraste. Their faith is a leash, and your Inquisition has taken hold of it.
17 - Flirt: I’m not losing you.
PC: I’m not losing anyone to Corypheus. Especially not you.
Blackwall (PC in relationship with Sera): Ah, perhaps that sentiment is best expressed to someone other than myself. Sera, for example? The encounter with Corypheus has left her shaken. She could use a kind word. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]
Blackwall (PC in relationship with Josephine): Ah, perhaps that sentiment is best expressed to someone other than myself. Namely Josephine. She’s more deserving of your attention than I am. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]
Blackwall (PC in relationship with Cullen): Ah, perhaps that sentiment is best expressed to someone other than myself. Cullen for instance. He’ll need your support in the days to come. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]
Blackwall: You can’t afford to think I’m special. I’m a soldier, no different than any soldier lost at Haven. I am fond of you, it’s true, but we can’t let this go any further. This—whatever you want this to be—is impossible.
Dialogue options:
- General: Why not? [18]
- General: You’re right. [19]
General: Why not?
PC: Why is it impossible? I know you have feelings for me.
Blackwall: My lady, don’t. You’re the Inquisitor, the Herald of Andraste. Even now there are people flocking to your banner, ready to serve—to die. We must remain focused on the task at hand.
Dialogue options:
- Special (claimed not chosen): I’m not Andraste’s Herald. [20]
- General: You all matter. [21]
- General: You’re evading. [22]
- General: I don’t do self-sacrifice. [23]
20 - Special: I’m not Andraste’s Herald.
PC: I’m not what they say I am. I never asked them to believe.
Blackwall: But they do, and it’s too late to go back. Whoever you were is gone. They believe you’re the Herald because they need to. Without that hope, all that’s left is danger. [24]21 - General: You all matter.
PC: I care for you, just as much as I do them. Can’t you just accept it?
Blackwall: I wish it were simple. Believe me, I do. But it’s not. [24]22 - General: You’re evading.
PC: Why make it about them? Or the war? It doesn’t have to be.
Blackwall: I wish it were simple. Believe me, I do. But it’s not. [24]23 - General: I don’t do self-sacrifice.
PC: I’m not throwing my life away because of what they say I am.
Blackwall: I wish it were simple. Believe me, I do. But it’s not. [24]24 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: We’re both bound by duty. Our lives aren’t ours to live. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.
Scene ends.
19 - General: You’re right.
PC: You’re right. This should go no further.
Blackwall: Thank you, my lady. You’ll see that this is for the best. Look, in spite of it all, there is hope. The people flock to your banner. They believe in you. [25]
25 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: Tell me honestly, are you what they say you are? Andraste’s chosen?
Dialogue options:
- General: Yes. [26]
- General (claimed not chosen): I’m not. [27]
- General: I don’t know. [28]
26 - General: Yes.
PC: I was chosen by Andraste. She saved me. We shouldn’t question it.
Blackwall (neutral/high approval) : I don’t. We all need to believe in something.
Blackwall (negative approval): All right. I’ll take on faith that she saw something in you that I haven’t. [29]
27 - General: I’m not.
PC: I wish they’d understand that I’m really nobody.
Blackwall: You’re somebody. Don’t you see what you are to them? Without you, they’d be consumed by despair. We all would. They need you to be Andraste’s messenger. It gives them hope. The truth doesn’t matter.
Blackwall (neutral/high approval): Ah, listen to me talk. You’re time is valuable, and I’ve wasted enough of it.
Blackwall (negative approval): Ah, this chatter gets me nowhere, and I tire of it. [29]
28 - General: I don’t know.
PC: There is so little I remember. What if they’re right?
Blackwall: Does it even matter? Don’t you see what you are to them? Without you, they’d be consumed by despair. We all would. They need you to be Andraste’s messenger. It gives them hope. The truth doesn’t matter.
Blackwall (neutral/high approval): Ah, listen to me talk. You’re time is valuable, and I’ve wasted enough of it.
Blackwall (negative approval): Ah, this chatter gets me nowhere, and I tire of it. [29]
29 - Scene ends.
Here Lies the Abyss
Conversation: Rumors about Wardens
After meeting Hawke, the PC approaches Blackwall at the stables.
PC: Varric’s friend, Hawke, said there were suspicions of corruption in Grey Warden ranks. Do you know anything about that?
Blackwall: Corruption? What sort of corruption?
PC: Corypheus. He’s been known to influence the minds of Wardens.
Blackwall: That could very well explain why so many have disappeared.
Dialogue options:
- General: We need to find them. [1]
- General: How’s your state of mind? [2]
- General: All, but you. [3]
1 - General: We need to find them.
PC: If this is true, then all Wardens are in danger. Even you. We’d better find your brothers.
Blackwall: I agree. If Hawke’s given you an idea where to start, we should get moving immediately. [4]
2 - General: How’s your state of mind?
PC: Are you feeling all right? No voices or anything?
Blackwall: If I start hearing things, I promise you’ll be the first to know. [4]
3 - General: All, but you.
PC: Yes, disappeared. Not you, though.
Blackwall: Have I given you any reason to doubt me? I won’t answer to this, not when it’s founded on rumor. [4]
4 - Scene ends.
After finding the Grey Warden’s plans in the Western Approach, the PC speaks to Blackwall again.
Blackwall: We need to head to Adamant Fortress as soon as possible. If there’s a chance we can stop Corypheus from destroying the Wardens, we can’t let it slip away.
Dialogue options:
- Investigate: What’s in Adamant?
Investigate: What’s in Adamant?
PC: What do you think we’ll uncover in Adamant?
Blackwall: Nothing good. Hearing the Wardens’ plan was bad enough. Now we’ll see it finished. Best case? We find a nightmare. Worst? We’ll find a nightmare, then die painfully. I can’t believe what they’re doing. I thought I understood the Order. (Sighs.)
Scene ends.
Cutscene: O Grey Warden
The PC approaches Blackwall by the barn. He is busying himself chopping wood.
Blackwall: Someone I knew once described Adamant to me. “Adamant is, and always will be, the Order.” He said. “A guardian on the edge of the abyss, the lone soul that stares into oblivion and doesn’t waver.” That’s what Warden-Commander Clarel tried to be. What they all tried to be.
Blackwall (in party at Adamant): None of the Wardens we saw wavered. They gave their lives—willingly.
Blackwall (not in party): I’m told her Wardens never wavered. They went to their deaths willingly.
Blackwall: They died for us, and Corypheus twisted their sacrifice to make it his own!
Dialogue options:
- General: We stopped it. [1]
+Blackwall slightly approves - General: Clarel’s pride is to blame. [2]
-Blackwall disapproves - General: That’s why we fight him. [3] +Blackwall approves
1 - General: We stopped it.
PC: We stopped him. We saved most of the Wardens.
Blackwall: But not all of them, and they died thinking they were doing something good. There’s no one to blame but Corypheus. Even Clarel’s intentions were righteous. [4]
2 - General: Clarel’s pride is to blame.
PC: Clarel thought she was the only one who could save the world. She was arrogant.
Blackwall: But her intentions were pure. [4]
3 - General: That’s why we fight him.
PC: And that’s why he has to die.
Blackwall: You’ll get no argument from me. There’s no one to blame but Corypheus. Even Clarel’s intentions were righteous. [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: Her desire to protect was so great, it led her astray. It’s not right… to want to do good, to be good, and have that turned against you.
Dialogue options:
- Romance: They didn’t have your resolve. [5] +Blackwall slightly approves
- General: Then remember the intention. [6] +Blackwall slightly approves
- General: We can still try, right? [7] +Blackwall slightly approves
- General: Nothing is perfect. [8] -Blackwall slightly disapproves
5 - Romance: They didn’t have your resolve.
PC: They should have had your resolve, Blackwall. You’ve never faltered. You never will.
Blackwall: Before the Inquisition, before you, I had the Wardens, the vow I made to them. Before that vow, I had nothing, was nothing. [9]
6 - General: Then remember the intention.
PC: Don’t think of what went wrong. Think of their intentions, their sacrifice. Honor their selflessness.
Blackwall: Clarel made mistakes, but she was a great woman, and she died a great woman. [9]
7 - General: We can still try, right?
PC: At the end of the day, I guess all we can do is try, and hope for the best.
Blackwall: You’re right. What matters is that we never give up. Clarel made mistakes, but she was a great woman, and she died a great woman. [9]
8 - General: Nothing is perfect.
PC: You can’t expect everything to go well all the time.
Blackwall: No, but we still have to try, don’t we? Even Clarel. She had to try. [9]
9 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: It’s not the armor or the trappings of the Order. It’s not the Joining. At the heart of it, all a Warden is, is a promise. To protect others… even at the cost of your own life.
Scene ends.
Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts
Conversation: The War in Orlais
Blackwall: The war in Orlais has claimed too many lives. I pray that it’s over for good.
What Pride Had Wrought
Conversation: A Good Thing
The PC approaches Blackwall at the stables.
Blackwall (if not taken to the Arbor Wilds): Corypheus is able to possess Grey Wardens, or so I hear.
Blackwall: Perhaps it’s a good thing I’m not a real Warden.
Dialogue options:
- General: A very good thing. [1] + Blackwall Slightly Approves
- General: We would’ve have left you behind. [2]
- General: Trying to defend your lie? [3]
1 - General: A very good thing. PC: It’s a blessing. Warden or not, I’d hate to be on the other side of your blade. Blackwall: Going up against darkspawn… and the last thing you want it a Grey Warden. Funny how these things happen. [4]
2 - General: We would’ve have left you behind. PC: If necessary, we could’ve left you in Skyhold, but now we don’t need to. You can get close enough to Corypheus to kiss him now, Blackwall: I hope that’s not an order. [4]
3 - General: Trying to defend your lie? PC: There’s really no good in your lie. Please stop trying to find some. Blackwall: Right. Never mind then. [4]
4 - Scene ends.
The Final Piece
PC drank from the Well:
Blackwall: I’m hoping you can control that new pet of yours. Who wants to wake up to a dragon begging for treats on the parapet?
Doom Upon All the World
Cutscene: Are You Ready? (Neutral/Low Approval)
The PC approaches Blackwall at the stables.
PC: Are you ready?
Choice dependent dialogue:
- Neutral approval, freed/made warden [1]
- Low approval, freed/made warden [2]
- Imprisoned [3]
- Broke up during judgement (regardless of approval or Blackwall’s fate) [4]
1 - Neutral approval, freed/made Warden
Blackwall: Of course. I will see this through to the end, Inquisitor. This will be a battle for the ages, and I’m honored to be fighting on your side.
Dialogue options:
- General: The feeling is mutual. [5]
- General: Battle for the ages? [6]
- General: We’re going to win. [7]
5 - General: The feeling is mutual.
PC: And I’m honored to be fighting by yours.
Blackwall: Let’s talk later. There are preparations to be made.
Scene ends.
6 - General: Battle for the ages? PC: It won’t be remembered as “a battle for the ages” if we get trounced. Blackwall: I don’t believe that will happen. I don’t think Corypheus does either. Let’s talk later. There are preparations to be made. Scene ends.
7 - General: We’re going to win. PC: Corypheus has no chance against us. Blackwall: Let’s hope you’re right. Let’s talk later. There are preparations to be made. Scene ends.
2 - Low approval, freed/made Warden
Blackwall: Of course. I will see this through to the end, Inquisitor. We haven’t always agreed, but we both recognize the threat Corypheus poses.
Dialogue options:
- General: Together, then. [8]
- General: He brings people together. [9]
- General: Good enough. [10]
8 - General: Together, then. PC: And we’ll defeat him. Together. Blackwall: Let’s talk later. There are preparations to be made. Scene ends.
9 - General: He brings people together. PC: Ah, Corypheus. Bringing people together since 9:40. Blackwall: That’s one way of putting it. Let’s talk later. There are preparations to be made. Scene ends.
10 - General: Good enough. PC: That’s good enough for me. Blackwall: Let’s talk later. There are preparations to be made. Scene ends.
3 - Imprisoned
Blackwall: Yes.
Dialogue options:
- General: Now you make amends. [11]
- General: You’ve wanted this. [12]
- General: You could die. [13]
11 - General: Now you make amends. PC: Take this chance to prove yourself. Atone for what you did. Blackwall: I intend to. And regardless of what’s happened, I’m grateful for the opportunity. Don’t concern yourself with me. I know what I owe the Inquisition. Scene ends.
12 - General: You’ve wanted this. PC: Wait, that was a stupid question. This is what you’ve always wanted, isn’t it? To fight an ancient darkspawn, convince yourself you’re actually a Warden? Blackwall: Perhaps I wanted that once. Now, I simply do what’s required by the Inquisition… and by you. You made it abundantly clear that my desires no longer matter. Don’t concern yourself with me. I know what I owe the Inquisition. Scene ends.
13 - General: You could die. PC: And are you ready to die? Blackwall: You know I am, and sometimes I wonder if it isn’t time to let “Warden Blackwall” die, too. Don’t concern yourself with me. I know what I owe the Inquisition. Scene ends.
4 - Broke up during judgement
Blackwall: I was always willing to die for you. That hasn’t changed.
Dialogue options:
- General: Now you make amends. [14]
- General: Are you sure? [15]
- General: Good. [16]
- General: Stop it. [17]
15 - General: Now you make amends. PC: Take this chance to prove yourself. Atone for what you did. Blackwall: I intend to. And regardless of what’s happened, I’m grateful for the opportunity. Don’t concern yourself with me. I know what I owe the Inquisition. Scene ends.
16 - General: Are you sure? PC: After what’s happened, I’m skeptical. Blackwall: I promised to serve. I will. Don’t concern yourself with me. I know what I owe the Inquisition. Scene ends.
17 - General: Good. PC: I need you committed. Blackwall: You know I am, and sometimes I wonder if it isn’t time to let “Warden Blackwall” die, too. Don’t concern yourself with me. I know what I owe the Inquisition. Scene ends.
General: Stop it. PC: Stop talking like that. Whatever we had is done. Blackwall: You can affect what’s out there. You have power enough to do that. But in here? That’s still mine. Scene ends.
Cutscene: Are You Ready? (High Approval)
The PC approaches Blackwall in the barn, where he is looking over the rocking horse he built.
PC: So it’s done?
Blackwall: Just about. The little ones in the camps don’t have much. I thought this might cheer them up. Even in the midst of war, they deserve to be children.
PC: It’s almost time. Are you ready?
Choice dependent dialogue:
- Free to atone [1]
- Free to atone (romance) [2]
- Sent to the Wardens [3]
- Sent to the Wardens (romance) [4]
1 - Free to atone
Blackwall: I am. I’ve been ready for a long time. Things become clear on the battlefield. It’s where I truly know myself. Everything else fades.
Dialogue options:
- General: You seem happy. [5]
- General: No fear? [6]
- General: I agree. [7]
5 - General: You seem happy. PC: You’re content. I’m glad. Blackwall: I am. [8]
6 - General: No fear? PC: Shouldn’t you at least pretend to be afraid of Corypheus? He is an ancient magister darkspawn with untold power. Blackwall: There is fear, but also exhilaration. [8]
7 - General: I agree. PC: It’s simpler in a fight. Enemy? Kill. Blackwall: I, too, am a soldier. [8]
8 - Scene continues
Blackwall: There has always been one constant. I am a soldier. I am trained to kill, to follow orders, and to ask no questions. But this time, I’m fighting for something I believe in, for people I care about. I chose to stay with the Inquisition. I chose this fight, and the difference is profound. I have only you to thank. Scene ends.
2 - Free to atone (romance)
Blackwall: No. Not at all. I already lost you once. Now I might lose you again.
Dialogue options:
- General: Have faith in me. [9]
- General: Would hard liquor help? [10]
- General: It won’t happen. [11]
9 - General: Have faith in me. PC: I won’t let us be torn apart a second time. Blackwall: You have some power, my lady, but not even you can thwart death. [12]
10 - General: Would hard liquor help? PC: Maybe a drink is in order. Blackwall: Yes, we’ll approach Corypheus in a stupor. Won’t feel a thing when death hits us. As much as I like the idea, I might have to decline. [12]
11 - General: It won’t happen. PC: Corypheus can’t stand against us. Blackwall: I will draw strength from your conviction. [12]
12 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: One thing’s certain–I’ll fight harder than any man out there. I’ll fight harder than I ever have. There’s always something to die for. But something worth living for? That doesn’t come every day. Scene ends.
3 - Sent to the Wardens
Blackwall: You know I am. I welcome the battle and what comes after. I will end up in Warden custody. It was what Blackwall wanted, more or less.
Dialogue options:
- General: They will be merciful. [13]
- General: More or less. [14]
- General: Focus on the battle. [15]
13 - General: They will be merciful. PC: I’m confident they won’t overlook the work you’ve done for the Inquisition. Blackwall: That remains to be seen. Best not to presume.
14 - General: More or less. PC: Blackwall wanted you to be a Warden. Who knows if the surviving Wardens will agree… They may not appreciate you impersonating one of their number.
15 - General: Focus on the battle. PC: Corypheus is our priority. Keep your attention on him. Blackwall: I won’t be distracted from our enemy.
16 - Scene continues.
Blackwall: I don’t fear the Wardens’ judgment. It will be no worse than what Orlais had in store. And I’ve made my peace with that. Redemption doesn’t come easy, but perhaps killing Corypheus will be a start. You’ve been a true friend when I haven’t deserve it. I am honored to fight by your side. Scene ends.
4 - Sent to the Wardens (romance)
Blackwall: You know I am. I welcome the battle and what comes after. My only regret is that I have to leave your side.
Dialogue options:
- General: It’s not an end. [17]
- General: Not for long. [18]
- General: We still have some time. [19]
17 - General: It’s not an end. PC: The Wardens will be a new beginning for you. But we could still use your sword here, if it’s allowed and you wish to return. Blackwall: You know I do. I will always return to you. Scene ends.
18 - General: Not for long. PC: I’m not letting you go that easy. Once you’re a Grey Warden, you get right back here. I need my Warden advisor. Blackwall: Advisor? PC: Let’s just call it that. Scene ends.
19 - General: We still have some time. PC: It’s not over yet. We still have time together. Blackwall: And I will cherish it. Scene ends.
Post-game Conversation
Choice dependent dialogue:
- Romanced, free to atone [1]
- Imprisoned [2]
- Non-romanced free to atone/Sent to the Wardens [3]
1 - Romanced, free to atone Blackwall: You seem eager to get back to work. I was certain you’d sleep for at least another week. But if you’re ready, I’m ready. Whatever you need, love. Scene ends.
2 - Imprisoned Blackwall: Need something? I am, as ever, your humble servant. Command me as you will. Scene ends.
3 - Non-romanced free to atone/Sent to the Wardens Blackwall: Ah, there you are. I heard about the new Divine.
Blackwall (Vivienne Divine): I didn’t think it was even possible for a mage to be chosen. This’ll anger plenty. But if I know Vivienne, she’ll be crushing all naysayers under that well-shod heel. Blackwall (Leliana Divine): I have to say, I wasn’t surprised when the spymaster was chosen. She’s quite a driven woman. I’m eager to see what she does. Blackwall (Cassandra Divine): Having Cassandra on the throne will go a long way in calming things down. I just hope she’ll curb her habit of punching everything she doesn’t like.
Blackwall (sent to the Wardens): I’m sure there’s still much to do. I’ll be here to help—until the Wardens send for me, at least. Blackwall (free to atone): Now what’s next for us? I stand ready, as always, Inquisitor.
Scene ends.
