Investigate
You’re Justinia’s Left Hand
PC: They called you the Left Hand of the Divine.
Leliana: That they did. What of it?
1 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: Why start an Inquisition? [2]
- Investigate: Why don’t you join my party? [3]
- Investigate: What is the Left Hand? [4]
- Investigate: Tell me more about Justinia. [5]
- General: Let’s continue this later. [6]
2 - Investigate: Why start an Inquisition? PC: What is the point of an Inquisition? Leliana: Justinia would’ve started the Inquisition if the Divine Conclave failed to restore peace. She hoped that, with enough support, we could challenge the very tenets of the Chantry. She wanted the Chantry to treat the mages fairly, but sometimes I wonder: why stop at mages? The Chantry has committed many injustices. If we’re going to change it, why not change the whole thing? Ah, it’s just a thought. None of this will be possible if we fail.
Dialogue options:
- General: I’m sorry she died. [7]
- General: I’ll try my best. [8]
- General: Will that happen? [9]
- General: You think I can’t do this? [10]
7 - General: I’m sorry she died. PC: I’m sorry she didn’t live to see the Inquisition. Leliana: So am I. [back to 1] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 8 - General: I’ll try my best. PC: I’ll try not to break something. Leliana: That’s good to hear. [back to 1] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 9 - General: Will that happen? PC: Are you saying we’ll fail without the Divine? Leliana: I’m saying I thought it would be her leading us. Nothing more. [back to 1] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 10 - General: You think I can’t do this? PC: Are you saying I won’t do Justinia proud? Leliana: I’m saying I thought it would be her leading us. I am passing no judgement on you, Inquisitor. [back to 1]
3 - Investigate: Why don’t you join my party? PC: I could use the Left Hand of the Divine at my side out there. Leliana: Every agent out in the world is my eyes, my ears, my blade. Wherever my people are, I am also. Coming with you, leaving my post, would blind and bound me. Do you see? [back to 1]
4 - Investigate: What is the Left Hand? PC: What, exactly, does the Left Hand of the Divine do? Leliana: A Divine always has enemies, and Justinia had more than most. I protected her. I watched, had an ear to every door. I identified threats, and I dealt with them.
11 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: Why so many enemies? [11]
- General: That’s a bit shady. [12]
- General: You’re evading the question. [13]
- General: Sounds like a spymaster. [14]
11 - Investigate: Why so many enemies? PC: Why did Justinia have so many enemies? Leliana: There were many who felt she was unfit to be Divine. She had a past, a worldly life. Unlike many, she wasn’t given to the Chantry as a child. She chose it, and somehow that made her unworthy. And because they thought she was unworthy, they wished her harm. [back to 11] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 12 - General: That’s a bit shady. PC: It sounds like you did some unscrupulous things as the Left Hand. Leliana: Perhaps, but wouldn’t you do anything to protect what you love? [back to 1] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 13 - General: You’re evading the question. PC: You still haven’t told me what you did, exactly. Leliana: I handled difficult situations that couldn’t be resolved through more delicate means. [back to 1] ㅤㅤ ㅤ 14 - General: Sounds like a spymaster. PC: So you were her spymaster, too. Leliana: I handled difficult situations that couldn’t be resolved through more delicate means. [back to 1]
5 - Investigate: Tell me more about Justinia. PC: I’d like to hear about Justinia. What was she like? Leliana: A friend. A mentor. Like me, she had secrets, made mistakes. It made her human. I think her followers responded to that.
15 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: Were you more than friends? [16]
- Investigate: How did you meet?[17]
- General: Let’s continue this later. [6]
16 - Investigate: Were you more than friends? PC: Was there something more than friendship between you? Leliana: You’re asking if we were lovers. Typical. I was devoted to her, therefore it must be romantic. Love is common. Love is simple. My bond with Justinia was something greater. She was a sister, a mother, a teacher. So to answer your question: yes, it was more than friendship. [back to 15]
17 - Investigate: How did you meet? PC: How did you and Justinia meet? Leliana: I met her a long time ago, before she became Divine, before she was Justinia. When I met her, she was Mother Dorothea. I was at my lowest: broken, lost. And she saved me. No, no, wait. (Laughs.) She hates it when I say that. I saved myself. She just showed me it was possible. [back to 15]
6 - General: Let’s continue this later. PC: We’ll talk more later.
Tell Me About Yourself
PC: Let’s talk about you.
Leliana: Me?
1 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: Got any stories? [2]
- Investigate: Tell me about your past. [3]
- General: That’s it for now. [4]
2 - Investigate: Got any stories? PC: Bards tell tales. I bet you tell some good ones. Leliana: There are plenty of tales in the library. Perhaps you should look for them there.
3 - Investigate: Tell me about your past. PC: What did you do before you worked for the Divine?
First time asking Leliana: I was a bard—an Orlesian spy—for many years. For a time, I also served a small cloister in Lothering. After the Blight, the Divine called on me to oversee her personal network. [5]
If asked before Leliana: I trained to be a spy from a young age, learned from the best. For a while, I was wildly happy. I loved the thrill of that life, the danger, but nothing lasts forever.
Dialogue options:
- Special: I’d like to be a bard. [5]
- [Back to 1]
5 - Special: I’d like to be a bard. PC: Can you teach me to be a bard? Leliana: Being a bard is so much more than being a spy. It involves a keen understanding of politics, the ebb and flow of influence. The Great Game. The bard’s is an intricate dance where a smile can be sharper than any dagger. The best way to learn is to immerse yourself in it. Perhaps, when this is all over, I’ll teach you. [back to 1]
4 - General: That’s it for now. PC: I should leave you to your work. Leliana: We can talk later.
You Are Well-Connected
PC: You seem to know a great many people.
Leliana: I’ve made friends and, on occasion, enemies. It’s unavoidable.
1 - Dialogue options:
- Investigate: You met the Hero of Ferelden? [2]
- Investigate: Did you know Hawke? [3]
- Investigate: How do you know Josephine? [4]
- Investigate: Tell me about Morrigan. [5]
- General: We’ll talk later. [6]
2 - Investigate: You met the Hero of Ferelden? PC: You have a history with the Warden who ended the Blight, don’t you?
Romanced, HoF died (and Leliana was not killed by the HoF) Leliana: We were in love. Even in the midst of all the chaos, I was happy. Truly happy. And then [they]… I’m sorry, I’d rather not talk about this. [back to 1]
Romanced, HoF alive (and Leliana was not killed by the HoF) Leliana: [They are] always in my thoughts, even when we’re far apart. My love is on a quest of [their] own. When the Inquisition has no further need of me, I will join [them]. For good, this time. I have lost enough. I will not lose [them] as well. [back to 1]
Left the party due to low approval/crisis Leliana: The Hero of Ferelden was not what I expected. We traveled together in the early days of the Blight, but joining was a mistake. We never got along. I was you and had silly ideas. [back to 1]
Any other approval level, HoF died Leliana: I had the privilege of calling [them] “friend” before [they] died. The world seemed much duller after that. It still does. [back to 1]
Any other approval level, HoF alive Leliana: Leliana (female HoF): I count her among my closest friends. She’s probably the only person I trust completely. I haven’t heard from her in some time. She just… disappeared. I try not to think of what might have happened. Leliana (male HoF: )I count him among my closest friends. I still write to him for advice when I can. He hasn’t replied to my letters in some time. I try not to worry about it. He can take care of himself. [back to 1]
Killed by the HoF Leliana: The “Hero of Ferelden.” (Laughs.) There are no heroes in real life, just people. And people can do terrible things. Like striking me down, for example. It’s hard not to bear a grudge. [back to 1]
If asked before Leliana: We’ve talked about this. I’d rather not do it again. It brings up memories. [back to 1]
3 - Investigate: Did you know Hawke? PC: They say you spent some time in Lothering. Did you know the Champion? Leliana: We spoke a few times. I seldom left the chantry, and we never became more than casual acquaintances. I saw more of the Hawke twins. Bethany in particular. She would spend time in meditation at the chantry, and she seemed to like my stories. The other one, the young man? He was a little surly. I did encounter the Champion again later in Kirkwall. Those were terrible times.
Dialogue options:
- Special: Why were they terrible? [7]
- [Back to 1]
7 - Special: Why were they terrible? PC: Was this when the chantry was destroyed? Leliana: No, that happened later, but even then the news coming out of Kirkwall was… disheartening. There were some in Val Royeaux who wanted the Divine to declare an Exalted March on Kirkwall. Justinia sent me there to see if that could be avoided, to gather evidence to calm those agitating for war. I guess it didn’t matter in the end. [Back to 1]
4 - Investigate: How do you know Josephine? PC: You seem to know Josephine quite well. Leliana: I met her a long time ago, but we didn’t become good friends until years later. After the Blight, in fact. I’d just returned to Val Royeaux, and she welcomed me back by throwing a diplomatic ball. She was the Antivan ambassador at the time, you see. The ball was… all right. Too many politicians. At midnight, Josie and I left to find a real party. We’ve been friends ever since.
Dialogue options:
- Special: A real party? [8]
- [Back to 1]
8 - Special: A real party? PC: What do you consider a real party? Leliana: It’s not a real party until someone’s smallclothes are pinned to a chantry board. And that’s all I’m saying about it. [Back to 1]
5 - Investigate: Tell me about Morrigan. PC: What do you know of Morrigan?
Morrigan had Kieran Leliana: She’s changed. She used to be so… disagreeable. Cruel. She said things just to hurt people. Now the sharp edges have worn away. Perhaps it was Kieran.
Old God Kieran, Leliana not romanced by HoF Leliana: He seems so normal, like any other little boy. And so polite. Not that I was expecting anything else. I mean… never mind. [back to 1]
Old God Kieran, Leliana romanced by HoF Leliana: He saved us, did you know? I would have lost my love without Morrigan’s child. I may never know her intentions, but I’ll always be grateful. [back to 1]
Kieran is a normal child Leliana: I suppose becoming a mother could change anyone. [back to 1]
Morrigan did not have Kieran Leliana: I first met her when we were traveling with the Hero of Ferelden. We never really got along. Morrigan can be a powerful ally. Just never forget that she’s here because she wants something. Work with her, learn from her, trust her if you must, but never underestimate her. [back to 1]
Not recruited in Origins Leliana: I met her at court a few years ago. We never got along. She inserted herself into the empress’s confidences. Be wary of her. Morrigan can be a powerful ally, but only when it benefits her. [back to 1]
6 - General: We’ll talk later. PC: We can continue this conversation later. Leliana: You know where I am.
Any Updates?
PC: Anything I should know?
Post-IHW Leliana: Arl Teagan has returned to Redcliffe Castle and resumed his duties as lord. The people are returning, slowly but surely.
- Leliana (conscripted mages): They seem grateful to the Inquisition for the return of their village.
- Leliana (allied mages): Unfortunately, our show of support for the mages has angered many.
Post-CotJ Leliana: Having the templars join the Inquisition has done wonders for our reputation. The people trust the templars, and now they trust us.
Post-IYHSB Leliana: I’ve agents stationed by the ruins of Haven, should Corypheus or his lackeys return. So far, nothing, and the Breach has been quiet for some time. That is something, at least.
During HLTA Leliana: Our agent stationed near Adamant reports strange sounds, curious lights around the fortress. At least two scouts have gone missing. We must make our move, and quickly.
During WEWH Leliana: It seems that the Orlesian army is awaiting our next move. Some of the generals are sympathetic to our cause. Others are still suspicious. Our actions are under a great deal of scrutiny.
Post-WEWH, Celene rules/truce was made Leliana: Celene has cemented power in Orlais. Good. We need an ally like her. At the moment, she is said to be rooting out the last of Gaspard’s supporters. Once that is done, we will have a united Orlais behind the Inquisition.
Post-WEWH, Gaspard rules Leliana: Celene’s loyalists are causing trouble in Orlais. Emperor Gaspard is employing harsh tactics. I would expect nothing less from him. We’ve gained a ruthless ally.
Post-WEWH, Briala and Gaspard rules Leliana: There is upheaval in Orlais. Our support of Ambassador Briala has scandalized the nobility. I’m quite pleased, personally. If Orlais is in turmoil, they will look to us for stability.
Post-WPHW Leliana: It’s been a long road, but we’re nearing the end.
- Leliana (sided mages): With Samson gone, the red templars are scrambling.
- Leliana (sided templars): Calpernia’s loss has left the Venatori demoralized. They’ll be easy to eliminate.
Leliana: I’ve nothing to report at the moment.
Special: You Must Miss Justinia
Available at Skyhold
PC: The Divine’s death hit you hard. How have you been feeling?
Leliana: Oh. You are referring to my outburst in Haven. I… I am much better now. Justinia was such a dear friend and… there were so many things going wrong.
Dialogue options:
- General: Tell me about it. [1]
- General: Does anything ever go right? [2]
- General: Best not to dwell. [3]
1 - General: Tell me about it. PC: Sometimes it’s best to talk these things out.
2 - General: Does anything ever go right? PC: Things going wrong? I’m shocked.
3 - General: Best not to dwell. PC: Let’s just move on. It’s best that way. Leliana: You’re right, Inquisitor. Scene ends.
4 - Choice dependent dialogue:
- Romanced HoF [5]
- Non-romanced HoF [6]
- Not recruited in Origins [7]
5 - Romanced HoF Leliana: I was with the Hero of Ferelden when [they] defeated the Archdemon.
HoF died Leliana: The Maker brought us together, and then I watched [them die]. In that instant, I felt the Maker’s presence go cold. One moment a cherished child, the next… abandoned. And then, when Justinia was killed… [8]
HoF lived Leliana: When [them] by my side, anything was possible.
If HoF took the throne Leliana (female HoF): She married king Alistair, but it didn’t matter. She loved me. Leliana (male HoF): He married Queen Anora, but it didn’t matter. He loved me.
Leliana: But there is no happily ever after, not when life goes on. When the Divine requested my help, I went to her. I owed her that much. I sacrificed so much to do the Maker’s work. But now Justinia is dead. [8]
6 - Non-romanced HoF Leliana: I was there when the Hero of Ferelden defeated the Archdemon.
If HoF Died Leliana: It took great sacrifice, but it was worth it.
Leliana: We won the day, and I thought the maker smiled on me. When the Divine requested my help, I went to her. I owed her that much. I sacrificed so much to do the Maker’s work. But now Justinia is dead. [8]
7 - Not recruited in Origins I always thought I was serving the Maker. He called me. I answered. For years, I did his work. I gave so much, and He took it all. And then he took my greatest friend. Either the Chantry is right and He is not listening, or He is content to be cruel. [8]
8 - Scene continues.
Leliana: I was angry. I felt betrayed. But I shouldn’t have let my emotions get the better of me. I’m sorry.
Dialogue options:
- General: You don’t need to apologize. [9]
- General: Let’s not speak of it. [10]
- General: You still get things done. [11]
9 - General: You don’t need to apologize. PC: Don’t apologize. You were grieving and upset. I understand. Leliana: Thank you. [12]
10 - General: Let’s not speak of it. PC: How about we never speak of this again. Leliana: If that was your intention, why did you bring it up? PC: Oh. Right. [12]
11 - General: You still get things done. PC: As long as you do your work, I don’t care how emotional you get. Leliana: A practical view of things. [12]
12 - Scene continues.
Leliana: Now, enough of this. Let us think more pleasant thoughts.
Specialization: Assassin
Leliana: They tell me you have a gift for shadows and blades.
Dialogue options:
- General: I do what I can. [1]
- General: That’s one way of putting it. [2]
- General: What? [3]
1 - General: I do what I can. PC: They flatter me. I can only do my best and hope it is enough. Leliana: For the Inquisition to succeed, its leader must be willing to do what it takes. [4]
2 - General: That’s one way of putting it. PC: When you put it that way, it makes it sound so elegant. Leliana: It does, doesn’t it? Mysterious, even romantic. Pretending it’s something else sometimes makes it easier. [4]
3 - General: What? PC: What? Leliana: Killing. You’re good at killing. PC: You should’ve just said that. Leliana: Pretending it’s something else sometimes makes it easier. [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Leliana: As your spymaster, may I say that I am pleased? My agents appreciate that they can look at their Herald and see themselves.
If Leliana and Zevran were recruited in Origins Leliana: Have I ever talked about my friend, Zevran? He was an Antivan Crow. He wasn’t always good at it. We only met because he failed to kill a mark. But he made me laugh.
Specialization: Knight-Enchanter
Leliana: You’ve joined a fellowship with a distinguished history. Knight-enchanters have long served the Divine.
Dialogue options:
- General: I chose this for that reason. [1]
- General: We’re missing one of those. [2]
- General: I didn’t do it to serve. [3]
1 - General: I chose this for that reason. PC: That is why I pursued this path. Mages do not always have to be at odds with the Chantry. Leliana: But I understand why so many are. And I don’t blame them. [4]
2 - General: We’re missing one of those. PC: Alas, we are lacking one at the moment. Leliana: Indeed. PC: Sorry. Leliana: It’s… all right. I was thinking it, even as you said it. [4]
3 - General: I didn’t do it to serve. PC: I didn’t choose this path to serve anyone. Leliana: Where you go on the path is one thing. Where it starts is another. These traditions were forged by the Chantry’s most trusted mages. That cannot be denied. [4]
4 - Scene continues.
Leliana: No matter. You have chosen well—and are in good company. I had friends who were knight-enchanters, who served at Justinia’s side. Who died with her. It’s good to see new mages keeping this flame alive.
Miscellaneous
After recruiting Blackwall Leliana: It seems Blackwall knows nothing about the disappearance of the Grey Wardens. It’s a disappointment. I am, however, glad that he is with us, even if he was… not what I expected. He seems to be a good man and his experience will be an asset to the Inquisition. As for the other Wardens, I suppose we will have to keep looking.
—
After meeting Hawke Leliana: So Varric knew where the Champion was all along. (Chuckles.) That’s the last time we send Cassandra to interrogate.
—
Morrigan drank from the Well
Leliana: Morrigan seems pleased with herself for some reason.
If Leliana was recruited in Origins Leliana: That smug face… she becomes more and more like her mother each day. Don’t tell her I said that.
