To the Templars

The advisors meet the PC in the war room to discuss pursuing the templars.

Cullen: The templars must help us close the breach. The Order was founded to fight magic!

Leliana: We must first convince the Lord Seeker to bring the templars out of exile.

Cullen: We’ve received word from a knight-recruit. They gather at Therinfal Redoubt.

Cassandra: It has been vacant for decades. Why go there?

Josephine: We must approach the Lord Seeker again to get anywhere; we can ask him then.

Dialogue options:

1 - General: We should offer an alliance.

PC: If we present a plan to seal the Breach, the templars may ally with us.

Leliana: first we must prove ourselves a more attractive prospect.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: We must leash them first.

PC: If we want the templars to be useful, we need them under control.

Leliana: To lure them into obedience, we must first become a more tempting ally.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: The Lord Seeker won’t help us.

PC: The Lord Seeker made it clear he isn’t interested in anyone “unimportant.”

Leliana: So we must change how he sees us, no?

Scene continues. [4]

4 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Josephine: If it’s status the Lord Seeker seeks, the Inquisition will approach him after allying with the noblest houses in Orlais.

Leliana: They’ll come with us to Therinfal and demand the templars help close the Breach.

Cullen: You believe that will work?

Cassandra: Even the Lord Seeker would find it difficult to ignore so many nobles on his doorstep.

Leliana: Yes. Especially when led by the Herald of Andraste.

Dialogue options:
  • General: If you think It’ll help.
PC: If it stops the sky from ripping open, I’m listening.

  • General: All right, tell me why.
PC: Is it my good looks you need, or my winning smile?

  • General: The Lord Seeker won’t care.
PC: The Lord Seeker barely knows I exist.

Leliana: Rumors you were saved from the Fade by Andraste have grown legion among the templars.

Josephine: We’ve done our part to encourage them.

Leliana: A Herald with few companions may be dismissed. Easily set aside. That same Herald returning with noble support will be reconsidered, as will the power of the Inquisition.

Dialogue options:

5 - General: Maybe that’s Andraste’s will.

PC: This could be why Andraste saved me. To lead Her templars against the Breach.

Cassandra: Perhaps also to convince the Lord Seeker to abandon the mania that seized him.

Scene continues. [9]

6 - General: It feels dishonest.

PC: You want me to present myself as Andraste’s Herald?

Cassandra: We know what the Lord Seeker thinks, but we also know many templars believe in you. They may change his mind.

Scene continues. [9]

7 - General: Am I inspiration or bait?

PC: Isn’t there the slightest chance the Lord Seeker will see my arrival as a threat?

Cassandra: Before, I would have thought he was a man of reason. Now, I could not say.

Scene continues. [9]

8 - General: It makes sense.

PC: If I have a growing reputation, we may as well use it.

Cassandra: If it moves the templars to question the Lord Seeker’s orders, he may rethink his stance.

Scene continues. [9]

9 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Cullen: With respect, after his appearance in Val Royeaux, hang what the Lord Seeker thinks.

Leliana: We do not need the Lord Seeker. We need his templars, with or without his approval. The Breach will not wait for our differences to settle.

Josephine: Good news. Several noble houses will petition the templars to help us stop the Breach. Lord Abernache will approach you. Sign nothing he offers, but his gossip’s reliable.

Leliana: I hope he knows the Lord Seeker’s mood. The templars will never help without his consent.

Operation confirmed. The party travels to Therinfal Redoubt.

Therinfal Redoubt

The party arrives at Therinfall. The weather is gloomy, and they are accompanied by a dozen nobles.

Abernache: The Herald of Andraste!

A noble approaches the PC.

Abernache: Lord Esmeral Abernache. Honored to participate. It is not unlike the second dispersal of the reclaimed Dales.

Vivienne is in partyHuman PCNon-human PC
Abernache: Ah, Lady Vivienne! We met at last summer’s ball? The Duke introduced us.

Vivienne: Indeed. I could not possibly forget the occasion.
Abernache: Nothing? I heard a Trevelyan or two took up the cause there.Abernache: Nothing? Divinity puts you above such things, I suppose.

Abernache: The Lord Seeker is willing to hear our petition about closing the Breach. A credit to our alliance with the Inquisition. Care to mark the moment? Ten Orlesian houses walk with you.

Dialogue options:

1 - Nobility: I celebrate this pairing.

PC: It is a shining day to have the best of Orlais in step with the Inquisition. The first of many inspirational and influential partnerships, I hope.

Abernache: Oh, you’re a natural. People will give you anything.

Scene continues. [5]

2 - General: Of course.

PC: The Inquisition values this alliance, Lord Abernache. The templars must see reason. We can’t let the Breach endanger us any longer.

Abernache: Oh, yes. Ghastly-looking thing. The Lord Seeker can’t think we’re ignoring it.

Scene continues. [5]

3 - General: Perhaps an overblown speech?

PC: Yes, never before has anyone purchased such an inspiring veneer of kinship. It’s a grand day for genuine partnership and/or servitude.

Abernache: Yes, yes, but I expect the Inquisition will still take the assistance.

Scene continues. [5]

4 - General: Save it for the Lord Seeker.

PC: No speeches. Just get me the chance to ask the templars to help close the Breach.

Abernache: Ceremony has value, “Herald.”

Scene continues. [5]

5 - Scene continues.
[Return to previous tree.](#dialogue-options-3

The PC and Abernache split off from the main group of nobles.

Abernache: Speaking of which, I don’t suppose you’d divulge what finally got their attention? Rumor will if you won’t.

PC: What do you mean?

Abernache: The Lord Seeker won’t meet us until he greets the Inquisition “in person.” Quite a surprise after the spat in Val Royeaux.

Dialogue options:

6 - General: That’s new to me.

PC: The Inquisition only asks the Lord Seeker help us close the Breach.

Abernache: Then it’s all been arranged by your ambassador. Let the diplomats work their magic if you trust them. Between you and I, the Chantry never took advantage of their templars. Wiser heads should steer them.

Scene continues. [9]

7 - General: And that’s good news?

PC: The Lord Seeker may not be singling the Inquisition out for praise, Lord Abernache.

Abernache: A meeting is a meeting. Get his ear, see if you can’t bend it to something advantageous.

Scene continues. [9]

8 - General: It’s common sense.

PC: The Inquisition got the attention of many nobles. The Lord Seeker probably wants to know how.

Abernache: That may be so. I tried getting an audience by offering the man a dutchy. A meeting is a meeting. Get his ear, see if you can’t bend it to something advantageous.

Scene continues. [9]

9 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

They catch up with the rest of the party at the front gates.

Abernache: Here we are! Therinfal Redoubt.

  • Blackwall: They could hold off an army here. If one ever came.
  • Cassandra: The Lord Seeker abandoned the White Spire to come here.
  • Iron Bull: Defensible. I like it. Someone worked out some issues building this place.
  • Solas: Charming.
  • Varric: It screams “I hate fun and kick puppies,” doesn’t it.

Abernache: It appears they’ve sent someone to greet you. Present well. Everyone is a little tense for my liking.

Abernache walks away.

  • Blackwall: I see the nobles are wetting themselves. Lovely.
  • Cassandra: These lords are useful, but none of this should be necessary. Surely the Lord Seeker sees the true threat. What is he playing at?
  • Iron Bull: Good thing these nobles are here. Maybe the templars are attracted to shiny objects.
  • Sera: Look at these poncy gits. How many vaults are sitting unguarded right now?
  • Solas: The Inquisition’s reach is increasing. Impressive.
  • Varric: I’d ask this lot out for drinks later, but I’m afraid they’d annex the tavern.

PC: The Lord Seeker changed his mind about us rather quickly. Is he known for that?

  • Blackwall: Perhaps he thinks you’ll rescue him from this sea of petticoats.
  • Sera: Nobs plays nice when there’s money in it. Not sure what a helm like him would want.
  • Solas: Perhaps he has a plan for us.
  • Vivienne: The Lord Seeker isn’t reputed to be fickle. Something must have changed.
  • Varric: Attack of conscience? I hear they happen once or twice an age.

Ser Barris

The party heads towards the gates. Numerous nobles pester the nearby templars.

Noblewoman: Have you looked at the sky, ser knight?

Templar: Of course, but—

Noblewoman: Is your order not sworn to destroy heretical magic?

Templar: Yes, but—

Noblewoman: Then if the templars won’t seal this Breach, action against you shall be required.

Templar: Action against us?

Noblewoman: The Empress of Orlais, my dear woman, listens to her court.

Templar: Oh, Maker.

The party continues on.

Noble: Where is the Lord Seeker? How much longer does the man think we’ll wait?

Noblewoman: What do you expect? The templars chose the midst of a civil war to storm off like children.

Noble: Deplorable. The Lord Seeker is mistaken if he thinks he’s impervious to the whims of the court.

Noblewoman: Let’s save that talk for when we’re inside, my friend.

The party travels into the Gatehouse. A group of templars stands off to the side.

Templar 1: Look at this frilly bunch. Couldn’t swing a sword without hitting a duke.

Templar 2: Why are we talking to them? That lord over there says he’s seventh in line to Orlais’ throne. Seventh!

Templar 1: Then the officers should be handling these lords and ladies. Where are they?

Another templar handles a noblewoman across from them.

Templar: Excuse me, uh… Lady, uh…

Noblewoman: Countess Dauvern.

Templar: Countess. Ma’am. Is it true the Herald of Andraste is here? Is he among your number?Templar: Countess. Ma’am. Is it true the Herald of Andraste is coming? Is she here already?

Noblewoman: I can’t point him out, I’m afraid. I never met the man.Noblewoman: She may have already arrived. I’m afraid the Herald and I have never met.

Templar: Oh. Thank you. Countess.

PC: I am, and I greet you on behalf of the Inquisition.

Templar: Forgive me! I didn’t realize it was you.

2 - General: So much for sneaking in.

PC: I was waiting for spontaneous flattery, but I suppose the game is up.

Templar: You mean you’re… oh! Welcome.

Abernache stands by the gate. He is chatting with an acquaintance.

Abernache: Childebert! By the Maker, I haven’t seen you in months!

Childebert: Not enough hunting in your forests, Esmeral! Give the boars time to recover!

Abernache: In that case, let’s celebrate collaring these templars by raiding my cellar. Some nice Tevinter whites this season.

Childebert: They’ll be well earned. I never thought the Lord Seeker would throw his weight in the Game.

Abernache: You think he dares?

Childebert: Of course! This isn’t some religious pique—the man meant to draw us out. Why drag his templars to this rock if not to wring out some concessions?

Abernache: Mmm. You know these Chantry types. Tricky to nail down sometimes.

The PC approaches Ser Barris.

Abernacehe’s Attache: I present Knight-Templar Ser Delrin Barris, second son of Bann Jevrin Barris of Ferelden. Ser Barris, may I be so honored to present Lord Esmeral Abernache…?

Barric ignores the attache and walks up to the PC.

Barris: I’m the one who sent word to Cullen. He said the Inquisition works to close this Breach in the Veil. I didn’t think you’d bring such lofty company.

Abernache: Barris… moderate holdings, your family. And the second son? (Scoffs.)

Barris: This… promise of status has garnered interest from the Lord Seeker. Beyond sense. The sky burns with magic, but he ignores all calls to action until your friends arrive.

Dialogue options:

5 - Special: Cassandra, does that seem right?

PC: Should a Seeker lead the templars this way?

Cassandra: In an emergency, if there’s no other recourse, but his goal should be to restore them to order.

Barris: He has taken command. Permanently.

Cassandra: if he feels there is a holy mandate…

Barris: That is what the Lord Seeker claims, and our commanders parrot him. (Sighs.)

Scene continues. [9]

6 - General: Can we count on your order?

PC: Will the templars stand with the Inquisition against the Breach?

Barris: Only if we’re allowed to leave and uphold our pledge.

Scene continues. [9]

7 - General: That seems… off.

PC: The Lord Seeker does realize that’s a rip into the Fade hanging above our heads?

Barris: The commanders say he’s “considering the situation.” Maker knows how.

Scene continues. [9]

8 - General: Is he mad, or foolish?

PC: Does the Lord Seeker believe the Breach will heal on it’s own?

Barris: If he does, he’s not confiding in us.

Scene continues. [9]

9 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Barris: The Lord Seeker’s actions make no sense. He promised to restore the Order’s honor, then marched us here to wait? Templars should know their duty, even when held from it.

  • Blackwall: A templar who remembers duty. I thought we’d never find one.
  • Cassandra: I am relived you recall it.
  • Sera: About time one of you gobs said it.
  • Solas: How refreshing, to meet a templar who remembers his charge.
  • Vivienne: A templar that remembers his responsibilities? I am reassured.

PC: You’re with us?

Barris: Win over the Lord Seeker, and every able-bodied knight will help the Inquisition seal the Breach.

Dialogue options:

10 - General: We’ll try.

PC: That’s why the Inquisition came, Ser Barris.

Barris: I’d tell you your chances, but the officers are a mystery lately.

Scene continues. [13]

11 - General: Wish me luck.

PC: I have a feeling the Lord Seeker will take some convincing.

Barris: I wish I could reassure you. Lately he sees no one but the officers.

Scene continues. [13]

12 - General: Then join us right now.

PC: If you think we’re right, abandon the Lord Seeker and help us.

Barris: We can’t abandon our orders. Not while the officers who survived the Conclave follow him.

Scene continues. [13]

13 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

Barris: We’ve been asked to accept much, after that shameful display in Val Royeaux. Our truth changes on the hour.

Abernache: Don’t keep your betters waiting, Barris. There’s important work for those born to it.

Barris leads them further into the fortress.

The Standards

The party follows Barris into a large courtyard where three large flags hang on a wall.

Barris: The Lord Seeker has a… request before you meet him.

Barris: These are the Standards. And honored rite centered on the people, the Maker, and the Order. The Lord Seeker asks that you perform the rite so he may see the order in which you honor them.

PC: What if I fail?

Barris: There is no “correct” answer. The ritual simply shows watchers who you are and what you value.

Dialogue options:

1 - General: Very well.

PC: We’d be honored, if that’s what the Lord Seeker asks of the Inquisition.

Barris: Not the Inquisition.

Scene continues. [4]

2 - General: I’m not that important.

PC: Fancy title aside, I don’t actually command the Inquisition.

Barris: That doesn’t seem to matter.

Scene continues. [4]

3 - General: None of us have time for this.

PC: If the Lord Seeker wants to analyze the Inquisition, let him do it when we meet.

Barris: It’s not only the Inquisition he’s interested in.

Return to previous tree.

Barris lowers his voice and turns towards the PC.

Barris: The Lord Seeker changed everything to meet you. Not the Inquisition — you. By name.

PC: Why?

Barris: I don’t know. He’s been fixated on you since your horde of nobles arrived.

Abernache: The Lord Seeker makes us shuffle flags around? Refuse! Let’s meet the man already.

Dialogue options:

5 - Take us to the Lord Seeker.

PC: The Lord Seeker can’t delay any longer, Barris. Take us to him.

Barris: The Lord Seeker’s request about the ritual was—

Abernache: Horseshit, my servants might say—making you, and by extension, me, do this busywork.

Barris(Sighs.) Right. The Lord Seeker can deal with this. Follow me.

Proceed to next scene.

6 - I’ll do the ritual.

PC: We’ll complete the ritual as the Lord Seeker requests.

Barris: When you’ve completed the rite, I’ll take you to him.

Return to previous tree.

The PC moves towards the banners.

Barris: Once you’ve finished the Standards, the Lord Seeker will see you, Herald.

Abernache: Hang your own draperies, knight! We’ve business to conduct!

Abernache: What does the Lord Seeker want to see, templar?

Barris: The Herald’s choice, Abernache. Not yours.

Abernache: He’s welcome to it.

Abernache: Put the templar’s standards up, “Herald,” or I’ll lay them out and walk on them. I’d leave the lot of it, if not for promises made.

The PC can approach Barris again.

PC: What do I do again?

Barris: Raise the flag most important to you to the highest position. All are worthy causes. The ritual shows others what’s dear to you.

Dialogue options:

9 - Investigate: Why make me do the ritual?

PC: Are most visitors asked to perform this ritual?

Barris: We don’t usually let outsiders see it at all. The Standards is a rite usually undertaken by recruits. It is normally followed by a long study of how the Order was used in the past.

Abernache: See? It’s pointless. Just bark your preferences to the bloody room.

Return to main dialogue tree.

10 - Investigate: Why do I suddenly matter?

PC: The Lord Seeker brushed me aside in Val Royeaux. What changed?

Barris: Nothing, except the company you keep. Finish the Standards, and you can ask the Lord Seeker why his opinion of the Herald improved.

Dialogue options:

13 - Special: Do you think I’m the Herald?

PC: Do you believe Andraste saved me at the Conclave?

Barris: Some of my brethren look at the rent in the sky and pray Andraste has sent a savior. But my thoughts aren’t important. Only the outcome of your visit matters.

Return to previous main dialogue tree.

11 - Investigate: Do other templars trust us?

PC: Do the other templars have faith in what the Inquisition stands for?

Templar 1: The Standards are for templars. Not for upstart orders!  I thought the Inquisition were heretics and blasphemers.

  • Denam: We must test the Herald! The Lord Seeker will see you now!
  • Denam: It’s your fault, elf/dwarf/Qunari/Trevelyan! He wants you, not us!
  • Denam: Now we’re all gifts for the Elder One!
  • Barris: What’s the Lord Seeker done to us?
  • Barris: How many of us have changed?
  • Barris: How far does this betrayal go?
  • Barris: I will undo my captain’s lies!
Abernache diedAbernache is alive
Barris: Abernache, that fool!Barris: Abernache. Useless but alive!

The party defeats the red templars.

PC: Is the knight-captain alive?

Barris: Barely. If you use a healing elixir, he might survive. If he even deserves it.

PC: We’ll heal him. Let’s judge the knight-captain after we find his master.

  • Blackwall: I agree. We’ve no idea what came over him.
  • Solas: The knight-captain may have useful information.
  • Vivienne: He hardly deserves our charity.

Barris: The knight-captain’s keys. I would question the Lord Seeker about this “Elder One.”

If the PC tries to leave the way they came in:

PC: Stuck. It’s barricaded from the other side.

The party continues on deeper into the fortress towards the sound of more fighting.

Corruption

The party enters the Lower Barracks where they fight more corrupted templars.

  • Cassandra: They’re monstrous!
    • Varric: You think?
    • Vivienne: We all noticed!

    Cassandra: It’s horrible!

  • Blackwall: These things — traitors to their kin!
    • Solas: There are few crimes worse.

    Blackwall: Make them feel it!
    • Iron Bull: I’m more worried about them tying to kill us!

  • Sera: What are these things?
    • Cassandra: Templars!
    • Varric: Templars! Sort of!

    Sera: That’s shite!

    • Cassandra: I know!
    • Varric: I’ll let them know!

  • Varric: Like no templars I’ve ever seen.
    • Iron Bull: Does that matter right now?
Varric: If it’s weird and I haven’t seen it, that’s worrying!

    • Solas: And yet there seems no shortage here.
Varric: Not what I want to think about!

The PC hears a strange corrupted voice.

Lucius: Prepare them! Guide them to me!

PC: Was that the Lord Seeker?

  • Blackwall: I heard nothing.
  • Cassandra: Where? I don’t hear anything.
  • Iron Bull: I didn’t hear anything.
  • Sera: What the what? All I hear is fighting.
  • Varric: I don’t hear him.

The party continues into the courtyard where more corrupted templars stand guard. The Lord Seeker’s voice continues to emanate throughout.

Lucius: I would know you!

Lucius: Show me what you are!

Lucius: You will be so much more!

When the main courtyard is cleared, a door opens into a mess hall. A non-corrupted templar fights inside.

Templar: There’s more of the red ones!

Templar: Don’t you recognize me?

Templar: Traitors!

The fight ends, and the templar tags along with the party if he survived.

Templar: Well fought. I don’t know what’s happening. All the officers have been turned into those… things.

More friendly templars fight corrupted templars ahead.

Templar 1: Ser Venner! Ser Mauden! Come to your senses!

Templar 2: They’re not listening! Fight on!

If both templars survive the combat.

Templar 1: Thank you. Our brethren have gone mad.

Templar 2: That red stuff growing out of them… that’s lyrium!

Templar 1: Come. There’s more of the red ones above.

If only one templar survives.

  • Templar 1: I don’t know what’s happened to our brethren. There’s more ahead. Be weary.
  • Templar 2: What’s happening to the order? The officers have all turned on us! There’s more of them this way.

The party unlocks a door to the side of the area. There is a corpse inside.

Barris: That’s the knight-vigilant. The Lord Seeker told us he died at the Conclave!

  • Blackwall: This man died of a sword thrust.
  • Cassandra: The Lord Seeker lied. Maker help us.
  • Iron Bull: I’ve got some bad news for him.
  • Sera: Anyone here not a murderous bag of spit?
  • Solas: The old cut away to make way for the new.
  • Varric: I’m beginning to understand why I’ve never met an old templar.
  • Vivienne: The Lord Seeker is either a fool or a liar.

Barris: Was the knight-captain hiding the body for the Lord Seeker? Did he kill the man himself? Maker, what’s happening to the Order?

PC: Ser Barris, what went on here?

Barris: Knight-Captain Denam told us the knight-vigilant died at the Conclave. Our officers hid a murder. Did they manipulate is for this “Elder One” bullshit the knight-captain screamed about?

Dialogue options:

1 - Investigate: Who or what is the Elder One?

PC: Do you know anything about this Elder One?

Barris: No. Templars serve the Maker and the Light of Andraste. I’ve never heard of an “Elder One” before the knight-captain began ranting.

Return to dialogue tree.

2 - Investigate: Why aren’t you all changing?

PC: Why aren’t all the templars corrupted? Why are you alive?

Barris: The knight-captain said he was trying to change us all? Nothing in this makes sense.

Return to dialogue tree.

3 - Investigate: Where are your commanders?

PC: If the Lord Seeker and knight-captain are compromised, who now leads you?

Barris: Officers across Thedas. How many have fallen to this madness, I don’t know. How long was this planned? How long has this lie poisoned us?

Return to dialogue tree.

4 - General: Let’s get moving.

PC: We’ll find out what’s going on. Let’s move.

Barris: We’re owed an explanation. The dead are owed more.

Scene continues. [5]

5 - Scene continues.
Return to previous tree.

The PC examines the corpse.

Barris: I never met the knight-vigilant, but he was respected. Now I wonder how much of the war was the Lord Seeker and my captain.

The PC loots through the chest and desk.

Barris: Make good use of it. The knight-captain didn’t.

They leave the office.

Barris: I pray the Lord Seeker can explain this madness.

The party continues up the stairs and towards the main hall.

Lucius: The Herald of Andraste! It’s time we became better acquainted! Come. Show me what kind of [person] you really are. What do you think to accomplish? What will you become?

The PC approaches the large doors, where Lord Seeker Lucius stands facing away. He turns on the PC quickly, grabbing them by the collar and dragging them towards the door.

Lucius: At last.

The PC and Lucius disappear into a flash of eerie green.

In Your Head

The PC comes to in a dimly lit area with bodies frozen in positions of agony, much like at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. Everything is eerily green and hazy. Two silhouettes are visible in the distance. The PC walks towards them. It looks to be Josephine and Cullen. Leliana walks up.

Lelia_The PC comes to in a dimly lit area with bodies frozen in positions of agony, much like at the Temple of Sacred Ashes. Everything is eerily green and hazy. Two silhouettes are visible in the distance. The PC walks towards them. It looks to be Josephine and Cullen. Leliana walks up._

Leliana: Is this shape useful? Will it let me know you? Everything tells me about you. So will this: watch.

She draws a dagger and holds it to Cullen’s throat.

Dialogue options:
  • Mage: What do you want, demon? [1]
  • General: Stop these lies! [2]
  • General: Is this supposed to shock me? [3]
  • General: You’re a demon, aren’t you? [4]

1 - Mage: What do you want, demon?

PC: Are you trying to temp me or copy me?
Leliana(Demon posing as Herald) Are you trying to copy me? [5]

2 - General: Stop these lies!

PC: Stop these disgusting lies, demon!
Leliana(Demon posing as Herald) Stop these lies, demon! [5]

3 - General: Is this supposed to shock me?

PC: A demon. Am I supposed to scream in terror next?
Leliana(Demon posing as Herald) Scream in terror next. [5]

4 - General: You’re a demon, aren’t you?

PC: You don’t feel me, demon. I see through you!
Leliana(Demon posing as Herald) I see through you! [5]

5 - Scene continues.

The demon using Leliana’s form slits Cullen’s throat and he collapses. Leliana disappears into the mist and Josephine walks forward holding a knife.

Josephine(Laughs.) Being you will so much more interesting then being the Lord Seeker.

Josephine vanishes and reappears behind the PC.

Josephine: Do you know what the Inquisition can become? You’ll see.

The PC whirls around, but the demon is gone again.

Josephine: When I’m done, the Elder One will kill you and ascend. Then I will be you.

Dialogue options:
  • Special: “Ascend”? Like a god? [6]
  • General: Attack or let me go. [7]
  • General: I saw through you. Now what? [8]
  • General: Who is the Elder One? [9]

6 - Special: “Ascend”? Like a god?

PC: This Elder One think he can become divine? That’s the oldest conceit of mortals.
Josephine(Laughs.) He knows. He was there. [10]

7 - General: Attack or let me go.

PC: End this pathetic nightmare and fight me if you can.
Josephine(Laughs.) A nightmare would be a pleasure compared to how I will learn of you! [10]

8 - General: I saw through you. Now what?

PC: I saw through your game. What else do you think you can gain?
Josephine: You are under the mistaken impression that I require consent. [10]

9 - General: Who is the Elder One?

PC: Who or what is this Elder One?
Josephine(Laughs.) He is between things. Mortal once, but no longer. [10]

10 - Scene continues.

Josephine walks back up from behind the PC.

Josephine: Glory is coming. And the Elder One wants you to serve him like everyone else: by dying in the right way.

PC: Keep talking, then.

Josephine walks away, and the PC turns to see Cullen standing behind them.

Cullen: I am not your toy! I am Envy, and I will know you! Tell me “Herald,” in your mind.

Cullen stabs a shadowy copy of the PC, who collapses with a gasp.

Cullen: Tell me what you feel!

Another copy of the PC cries out as they’re stabbed, and fall to the ground bleeding. The PC looks down to find they’re holding the knife, and they stabbed themself.

Envy(Demon posing as Herald) Tell me what you see.

The PC throws the knife down. They enter a nearby doorway to see a familiar scene of themself in shackles as Cassandra stands over them.

  • Cassandra: Tell me why we shouldn’t kill you now.
  • Cassandra: Do you deny it? Do you dare deny your crime?
  • Cassandra: Our one chance to make peace between the mages and the templars, and now it’s over!
  • Cassandra: You think me a fool? Explain this.
  • Cassandra: You’re lying!

The PC continues into the next room.

Messenger: Our enemies have surrendered unconditionally.

Soldier: The Inquisition’s strength rivals any kingdom in Thedas.

Envy(Demon posing as Herald) Our reach begins to match my ambition — but we will strive for more.

Dialogue options:
  • General: You’re enjoying this. [11]
  • General: That’s not me! [12]
  • General: I’d never say that! [13]
  • [Leave conversation.] [14]

11 - General: You’re enjoying this.

PC: Is imitating what you can’t have your only pleasure, demon?
Envy: Accusing… trying to find my weakness. Is that the [person] you are? [15]

12 - General: That’s not me!

PC: That’s my body. What are you doing?
Envy: Is that a hint of fear? Interesting… [15]

13 - General: I’d never say that!

PC: Those aren’t my words, demon!
Envy: Hmm… are you bothered by imperfection? [15]

14 - [Leave conversation.]

Envy(Demon posing as Herald) Turning away. Bravery, or desperation? [15]

15 - Scene continues.

Envy(Laughter.)

The the figures vanish in a burst of flame. The PC enters the room to find fountains of green flame leading them down a twisting path.

If the PC completed the Standards:

Order firstChantry firstPeople first
Envy: You raised the templars’ flag for the standards. Do you admire them? Fear them? By the time we’re finished, all templars will be red.Envy: You chose the Chantry’s flag for the standards. Is it important? Will you grieve when the Elder One topples it?Envy: Were you in earnest when you chose the people’s flag for the standards? For when I am you, the people will never forget what you do to them.

Figures stand around, talking about the Inquisition.

Orlesian: How quickly the Inquisition’s influence has spread! Kings and queens seek out it’s counsel.

Noblewoman: Who would stand against us when the Inquisition commands nations?

Messenger: No one wise.

Soldier 1: The Herald saved all of us. Our army could tear down a kingdom!

Soldier 2: No force matches ours for strength.

Follower: When the Chantry fell, we despaired. But the Herald of Andraste brought us light! The people stand in awe of the Inquisition!

Envy: Do you see how glorious my Inquisition will be after you die at the hands of the Elder One?

Cole: You’re hurting, helpless, hasty. What happens to the hammer when there are no more nails?

Envy: What are you? Get out! This is my place!

The PC enters an open door. The room has a number of things on the ceiling, and the door slams shut behind them. There’s nothing of interest, so the PC goes to leave.

Cole: Wait.

The PC turns back around, but doesn’t see anything. They walk back into the room. Cole appears behind them.

Cole: Envy is hurting you.

The PC turns but he is gone again.

Cole: Mirrors on mirrors on memories. A face it can feel but not fake. I want to help. You, not Envy.

Dialogue options:
  • General: Another fake. Why? [16]
  • General: You look… familiar. [17]
  • General: I’m not fooled, Envy. [18]

16 - General: Another fake. Why?

PC: Why continue this, Envy? Who’s this meant to be?
Cole: I’m Cole. I’m still Cole. [19]

17 - General: You look… familiar.

PC: Who are you? I’ve seen you before. Have I?
Cole: I’ve been watching. I’m Cole. [19]

18 - General: I’m not fooled, Envy.

PC: I’m through with your lies, Envy.
Cole: I’m not a lie. I’m Cole. [19]

19 - Scene continues.

Cole: We’re inside you. Or I am. You’re always inside you.

Cole appears again, on the ceiling this time.

Cole: It’s easy to hear, harder to be a part of what you’re hearing. But I’m here, hearing, helping. I hope. Envy hurt you, is hurting you. I tried to help. Then I was here, in the hearing. It’s — it’s usually not like this.

Dialogue options:
  • General: I’m more confused than ever. [20]
  • General: Make sense! [21]
  • General: I need to know what you mean. [22]

20 - General: I’m more confused than ever.

PC: None of what you said makes sense. [23]

21 - General: Make sense!

PC: The least I can ask is that things make sense in my own head!
Cole(Chuckles.) It never works like that. [23]

22 - General: I need to know what you mean.

PC: If you can explain this, I’m listening. [23]

23 - Scene continues.

A shriek echoes from outside the room, and the PC backs further towards Cole.

Cole: I was watching. I watch. Every templar knew when you arrived. They were impressed, but not like the Lord Seeker.

PC: The “Lord Seeker” is an envy demon. It wants to be me.

Cole: Yes. It twisted the commanders, forced their fury, their fight. They’re red inside. Anyway, you’re frozen, Envy is trying to take your face, I heard it and reached out, and then in, and then I was here.

Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: You’re a mind-reading spirit? [24]
  • Investigate: What do you mean I’m “frozen”? [25]
  • General: Then help me escape. [26]
  • General: Can I exit the way you got in? [27]
  • General: I don’t trust you. [28]

24 - Investigate: You’re a mind-reading spirit?

PC: So you’re a spying phantom who accidentally enters minds?

MageNon-Mage
PC: That says spirit to me.PC: Did I miss anything?

Cole: If it bothers you, I can make you forget. That helps. No. You need all of you right now to fight. Maybe later.
[Back to 24]

25 - Investigate: What do you mean I’m “frozen”?

PC: How is my body “frozen” back in the waking world?
Cole: Thoughts are fast. We’re here. Outside, a blade is still falling, hanging in the air like a sunset. PC: If no time’s passing, does that mean I’m safe?
Cole: No. It would be good it you got out.
[Back to 24]

26 - General: Then help me escape.

PC: All right “Cole.” If you really want to help, how do I get out?
Cole: It’s your head. I hoped you’d know how to stop it.
PC: Well I don’t. [30]

27 - General: Can I exit the way you got in?

PC: All right “Cole,” can I get out the way you came in?
Cole: Yes, but I think you would die. It’s your head, you shouldn’t be out of it.
PC: Then how do I evict everyone else? [30]

28 - General: I don’t trust you.

PC: Nothing you say is helping to clear my head.
Cole: It’s your head. I hoped you’d know how to stop it.
PC: Well I don’t. [30]

29 - Scene continues.

Cole: All of this is Envy: people, places, power. If you keep going, Envy stretches. It takes strength to make more. Being one person is hard. Being many, too many, more and more, and Envy breaks down, you break out.

PC: So if we keep moving in my “head,” we tire Envy into submission?

Cole: Maybe. I hope it helps. It’s more than sitting here waiting to lose your face.

Cole runs out of the room.

Cole: This way.

Up and Out

Cole: Thoughts are loud here. Make them louder. Think of water.

PC: Think of water?

Cole: Yes.

Envy: That thing can’t help you. I will see more!

The PC heads into the next room while Envy laughs. There is an empty table, then a bright flash of white. Cassandra and Chancellor Roderic stand over a table with the PC’s impaled bloody corpse splayed across it.

Envy: Betrayed allies will curse your name. Like the first Inquisition, you will bring blood and ruin and fear!

Cole: Unless you don’t. You don’t have to. None of this is real unless you let it be.

Envy: Get out, thing! I am learning!

  • Chancellor Roderic: As grand chancellor of the Chantry, I hereby order you to take this criminal to Val Royeaux to face execution.
  • Chancellor Roderic: The Qunari/elf/dwarf/prisoner failed, Seeker.
  • Chancellor Roderic: Have you gone completely mad?

The PC moves on and sees themself speaking to Mother Giselle, flanked by two Inquisition soldiers.

Envy(Demon posing as Herald) What do you say to your crimes, heretic?

Giselle: This is a farce! I demand justice!

Envy(Demon posing as Herald) Have it. Take her to the gallows.

Dialogue options:
  • General: Stop this! [1]
  • General: She is not a heretic! [2]
  • General: No one will stand for this! [3]
  • [Leave conversation.] [4]

1 - General: Stop this!

PC: No one will think you’re me, demon!
Envy(Laughs.) Do your friends know you so well? Not as well as I’ll know you. [5]

2 - General: She is not a heretic!

PC: Mother Giselle is no heretic.
Envy: Any who challenge the word of Andraste’s Herald will be corrected. [5]

3 - General: No one will stand for this!

PC: The people will turn against a despot, demon.
Envy: I will clear their doubt. As Herald, the lash will follow my word. [5]

4 - [Leave conversation.]

Envy(Laughs.) You chose to hide? Show me. [5]

5 - Scene continues.

The the figures vanish in a burst of flame. There are occupants in the nearby cells.

Soldier: Baron. Do you confess to conspiring against the Herald of Andraste?

DuRellion: I confess nothing. The Inquisition took my land and turned out my family!

Soldier: Then your sons will be executed in the absence of a declaration of guilt.

DuRellion: What? They’re just children!

The PC goes to another cell.

Hevara (?): Where is the Herald? Let that tyrant charge me to my face!

Soldier: Heresy against the Inquisition is the only charge we need.

Hevara: I am a grand cleric of the Chantry!

Soldier: You are a threat to the peace! The more of you in here, the better!

The PC enters another cell.

Cole: It’s dark, but it isn’t real. Think of sparks. Keep going up. You’re more you there than you are Envy, and that tires it out.

PC: Good, I think.

Cole vanishes again leaving a brazier in his place. The PC takes a torch and lights other braziers through the dungeon, and Envy gets more and more infuriated. The PC enters another cell.

Soldier: The Herald has questions, Commander.

Cullen: Is it my turn to be branded a traitor for questioning what we’ve become? I deserve it for letting [them] turn the Inquisition into a butcher’s pit.

The PC enters a final cell.

Josephine: Four days without food, one without water… I wish the Herald would tell me what [they] want me to confess.

The door burst into flames and the PC travels upstairs.

Envy(Growls.) I haven’t seen enough!

The next room is overgrown. Two Orlesians stand inside.

Orelsian 1: The chevaliers couldn’t stop them?

Orlesian 2: There weren’t enough of them, boy. Val Royeaux is burning! The Herald marches here next, bringing even more demons.

Dialogue options:
  • General: I’d sooner die! [6]
  • General: Why invade Orlais? [7]
  • General: You can’t keep me here. [8]
  • [Leave conversation.] [9]

6 - General: I’d sooner die!

PC: I’d die before I let that happen!
Envy: Righteousness suited the Lord Seeker as well. [9]

7 - General: Why invade Orlais?

PC: What’s the point in attacking Orlais?
Envy: So you’re curious. Shall I make use of that when I’m you? [9]

8 - General: You can’t keep me here.

PC: I saw your other lies, and I’ll escape this one too.
Envy: Determination? Such a useful trait. [9]

9 - Scene continues.

Cole: You’re letting the Herald see more to sketch [their] shapes, but what [they] see makes [them] stronger.

Envy: Quiet!

The the figures vanish in a burst of flame. The PC continues on. Two shades emerge and follow the PC, but do not attack them.

Envy: You wish to be difficult? Then see the legacy of the Inquisition! It’s followers hosts to demons! Your world — ashes! Show me what you’d do with them!

Cole: It can’t make you, not anymore. You are getting too strong.

Envy: Shut! Up! Thing!

Cole: Almost there. Keep going up.

PC: What then?

Cole: You’re making it hard for Envy to think. It’ll probably come out soon. It’s angry. But that’s okay. So are you.

Orlesian soldiers stand around in a forested area.

Orlesian Soldier 1: They say the Herald summoned these demons after Celene was murdered.

Soldier 2: An abomination! Why did no one realize?

Soldier 1: Quiet! I hear something.

The soldiers attack the PC, and the shades fight them back.

Soldier 1: In Celene’s memory!

Soldier 2: There’s too many!

The PC continues up the stairs.

Orlesian Soldier 3: I think we’ve escaped them.

Soldier 4: What does it matter when all of Orlais is overrun? They say Tevinter’s fallen and Antiva is besieged by the demons that took Val Royeaux.

Soldier 3: Maker.

The PC makes their way to the door where they meet the Lord Seeker initially. Envy appears in their form and grabs them by the throat/collar, slamming them into the door.

Envy(Demon posing as Herald) Unfair, unfair! That thing kept you whole, kept you from giving me your shape!

PC: What could you gain from being me?

Envy(Demon posing as Herald) What could you gain? What… ugh!

Envy’s hand glows and it strokes the PC’s face.

Envy: We’ll start again. More pain this time. The Elder One still comes.

Cole: It’s frightened of you.

Envy: Get out of—

The PC uses Cole’s distraction to grab Envy and head-butt it into oblivion. Everything goes white.

The Plan

The Envy demon is thrown into the Great Hall through the doors and screeches as the PC stares on. It then flings itself further into the hall, conjuring a green barrier as it flees.

Barris: The Lord Seeker!

PC: No. An imposter.

Barris: That monster ensured we weren’t prepared. I still don’t know what we’re up against.

Dialogue options:
  • Investigate: Where’s Cole? [1]
  • General: Envy took the Lord Seeker. [2]
  • General: The demon wanted me, too. [3]
  • General: It’s Envy. How do we kill it? [4]

1 - Investigate: Where’s Cole?

PC: Did anyone else see a young man appear beside me?
Barris: What young man?

MageNon-Mage
PC: Pale. Strangely dressed. Clearly Fade-touched.PC: Pale. Strangely Dressed. He was with me?

Barris: I saw no one. The Lord Seeker was alone when you revealed his true nature.
[Back to 1]

2 - General: Envy took the Lord Seeker

PC: I’m sorry. An envy demon replaced the Lord Seeker. [5]

3 - General: The demon wanted me, too.

PC: That fake Seeker was an envy demon. Apparently I caught it’s fancy. [5]

4 - General: It’s Envy. How do we kill it?

PC: It’s and envy demon, and I need to know how to kill it. [5]

5 - Scene continues

If Cassandra is in the party
Cassandra: Envy! Then the Lord Seeker…
Barris: Is caged or dead. Maker.

If Cassandra is not in the party
Barris: Envy? Maker. Then the real Lord Seeker is caged or dead.

Barris (if discovered captain’s secret): And my captain knew. It’s the red lyrium, isn’t it? I knew that retched stuff was risky!
Barris (if captain’s secret was not discovered): It used the red lyrium to corrupt the Order, didn’t it? I knew that miserable stuff was risky!

Barris: They often give us new kinds of lyrium. Our commanders… some used the red stuff first, to prove it was harmless. The knights would have been next. That demon turned our leaders so we couldn’t question when this started!

Dialogue options:
  • General: Then your order caused this. [6]
  • General: Don’t underestimate it. [7]
  • General: Then let’s finish it. [8]

6 - General: Then your order caused this.

PC: Then your leaders all but corrupted the templars for the demon.
Barris: Then we will fix it. [9]

7 - General: Don’t underestimate it.

PC: I can tell you firsthand, it’s a clever liar. Bring your best to stop it. [9]
Barris: Our best…

8 - General: Then let’s finish it.

PC: Will you keep blaming yourself, or help me end this? [9]

9 - Scene continues.

Barris turns to some templar knights standing nearby.

Barris: Templar! What is Envy?

Templar 1 (Tavus): A coward, brother!

Templar 2 (Esmia): It studies, makes less mistakes. But most of all, it hides.

Barris: We need our veterans. Our commanders have turned, but our lieutenants may still be fighting. We’ll hold the hall. You find the lieutenants and uncorrupted lyrium stores. Bring them here, and I’ll give you envy. Show those things no mercy.

Cutscene ends. You can choose to speak with Barris again to clarify the plan.

PC: What’s the plan, Ser Barris?

Barris: Envy’s rare. Rank and file aren’t trained for that. That’s why it took us top down. But there’s a few left than can handle it: veterans. Bring them here. With them and enough normal lyrium, we can punch a hole in that barrier.

  • Blackwall: Good to know there are some of you left. That means your order can be saved.
  • Cassandra: We need templars, but we do not need the Order. It is so filled with corruption, there is no saving it.
  • Iron Bull: Sooner we get these guys back on their feet, the sooner we can get them to close the Breach.
  • Sera: Whatever. You make it so we can kill that thing, I’m happy.
  • Solas: These templars have just enough power to be dangerous to themselves and others.
  • Varric: Glad to see Curly isn’t the only templar left who isn’t crazy.
  • Vivienne: Some sanity remains. Good. We need them to have their wits.

Dialogue options:

  • Investigate: Anything new on the Elder One? [10]
  • Investigate: How will Lyrium help? [11]
  • Investigate: Why willingly use red lyrium? [12]
  • General: We’ll be back. [13]

10 - Investigate: Anything new on the Elder One?

PC: Envy claimed to serve the “Elder One.” Just like your knight-captian.
Barris: Maybe it’s to do with the war with the mages but… I don’t know anymore. This is all above me. But bring me the tools, and I’ll stand to the last.

14 - Investigate: When did the takeover start?

PC: When did the Lord Seeker start taking over?
Barris: I’m shamed whatever I say. If he was fake at the start, we let a demon walk in. If he was genuine, Envy took the Lord Seeker from under our noses.
Barris (if discovered captain’s secret): Who knows how long the knight-vigilant has been dead? The knight-captain “relayed” his orders.
Barris (if captain’s secret was not discovered): Arrogant fools, all of us.

11 - Investigate: How will Lyrium help?

PC: You’re not mages. You need lyrium for this?
Barris: Templars deny magic, but envy demons are tough. Especially when they’ve had time to entrench themselves. The veterans can show us how to push. The lyrium will help, so when we break, we break the enemy.
PC: “Break”? You mean you could die?
Barris: A demon holds the honor of the Order. There isn’t a man or woman here who will let that stand.

12 - Investigate: Why willingly use red lyrium?

PC: I need to understand how you could accept the use of corrupted lyrium.
Barris: We didn’t know it was corrupted. The Lord Seeker only said it was better than Chantry lyrium.
PC: That’s it?
Barris: You have to understand. All magic is corruptible, all magic is dangerous, and yet all magic can serve. The red lyrium was just a tool. Or so we thought.

13 - General: We’ll be back.

PC: I’ll return.
Barris: It’s the only plan we’ve got.
